I really can't understand negative reviews about this place. The selection is fantastic. The prices are MUCH better than Wheatsville, and this is for the exact same items, mind you. Not only that, many items are clearly listed as being marked down. I feel like our last trip we probably saved $40 on a $100 receipt compared to Wheatsville, maybe more. The staff were extremely helpful as well. Coming from NYC I was getting a little discouraged at Wholefoods and Wheatsville as I felt the prices were relatively the same, but Natural Grocers has restored my faith in Austin. read more

I went in to Natural Grocers because it was 1:00pm and couldn't deal with Central Market. The parking at Wheatsville is a nightmare and I hate that I have to pay more because I'm not a member. Anyway, I was completely impressed with Natural Grocers. I went in for eggs, strawberries and bread. I came out with much more. I found my favorite Eden Organic Udon noodles, a great tea selection and a few other of my favorite staples. I agree with the other reviewer that you have to know prices because some things are higher than CM or Whole Paycheck but the $3.49 organic strawberries look better than anything I've bought from CM in the past few months. CM produce has been steadily going downhill and it's nice to have a neighborhood alternative. The parking was a breeze and I would highly recommend it for when you need to pick up a few things. The one thing I really love about Natural Grocers is their sales. Sometimes prices are half off of their normal retail prices hard to beat that. The store also has a great personal care sections , and one of the bigger supplement selections I have found in town. Definitely check this place out!! read more

We shop here now and then and have been doing so since it opened. However, the store cannot seem to keep good employees. Cashiers, in particular, are generally listless with no sense of customer service. My other complaint is that the produce is all organic, but often not fresh. This store really needs new people who care about the store and its customers. The store is seldom busy, but when there are more than a few customers, you can expect a long wait in line! read more

I know who Suzie P. is talking about and he has always been VERY nice to me. Just saying. Everyone else at this store is sooooo nice and helpful, I used to go in a few times a week and got to know everyone's name for awhile. I have never had a problem with the produce or anything else. A lot of the prices are much better than WF or CM. Most importantly, their kombucha is the cheapest I have seen in town anywhere!!! Natural grocers has cheaper supplements than a lot of places. I also like that they will put their older milk on sale. They tend to have a lot of organic brands I like too, although I wish they carried Texas Daily Harvest Milk, which I have to go to Wheatsville Co-op for. When I first drove past them, I assumed that a store that mainly carries supplements would be overpriced, but they really aren't that bad. Some products are overpriced, but they also frequently have enough brands that you can pick and choose based on whether you think that the higher end options are more qualitative versus whether you think they are mostly the same and some are just cheaper. And I suppose that depends on the given product. But it's nice to have those choices. read more

I was really pleasantly surprised by this place. For some reason I'd been avoiding it for months (I think the words "Vitamin Cottage" put me off, though I should have paid more attention to "natural grocers"). To be sure, the store is largely given over to vitamins and an almost absurd variety of health supplements and the like, but I'd venture to say that they have almost as much of a grocery selection as Wheatsville, and it's friendlier and less crowded. It's nice that there is another store like wheatsville, but without the co-op aspect (though I like the idea of the co-op, I'm just not convinced it's worth it for a transient college student like myself). I stopped in because I just needed a couple of things - eggs and butter. Pretty easy. But I came away with the eggs and butter, some chocolate, some bread, and ground lamb that I picked up on a whim. And, I could have picked up more stuff if I weren't restraining myself! They have really quite competitive prices on things - some good prices I noticed were on eggs, yogurt, nuts, etc. I also saw that they sell beet sugar!! This is incredibly exciting for a baker, and I know I'll be back to get some. Beet sugar is almost impossible to find in the US, so finding it here was really cool. I haven't seen it at Whole Foods, Central Market, OR Wheatsville, OR the baking store on 183. I'm retaining their last star for a couple reasons. The produce selection is small, but more importantly, they don't get deliveries every day (I learned this from an employee who apologized for the 'sad-looking' produce - her words, not mine - and chalked it up to the weird schedule due to the holidays). Now, this points to a couple things: 1, the produce is not as fresh as it could be, and 2, the store does not get enough traffic to need daily deliveries. Because of #2, I can't blame them for #1, and I almost don't want them to need daily deliveries because that would mean more crowds and less ease of shopping. Another thing: whew, I'm glad I came when I did, so I could pick up one of the 3 remaining cartons of a half-dozen eggs. Like, in the entire store. If they hadn't had ANY eggs in a grocery store I would have been upset. Lastly, the meat section - it's only frozen! I saw they had some stuff that was near the cheese section, but it looked like it had only recently been defrosted. It's all organic, and I know that's hard to find, but it'd be nice if they had even a couple of fresh selections. I will be back later, hopefully to reward them with another star. I just want a fast way to get a couple groceries when I need them, and this places fits the bill. Oh, and don't forget to bring a reusable shopping bag! read more

This is my favorite store in town. They have the best local and organic produce that is not mass produced. They carry all of the grocery items I used to buy at central market and their prices are cheaper for every single item I've compared. The only request is that they start carrying Bela Vie duck eggs so I don't have to go to Wheatsville for them. read more

I live in South Austin but work closer to town so when I have time on my lunch break I make a beeline to Natural Grocers. I recently embarked on an elimination diet (no wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, nightshades, sugar, processed anything, etc.) I attribute my success on this rather restrictive diet to the selection here. I have found that staff are extremely helpful and attentive and I love that you are forced to bring your own bag. It's about time someone stepped up to the plate on this issue. Produce is a bit limited and perhaps not always the freshest (I sometimes need to stop by Wheatsville to get a few things not available here) but their meats are very fairly priced. I'm also a little concerned about the amount of plastic bags used to store all their nuts, seeds, and herbs but overall I think Natural Grocers is on the right track. Just wish they had one further south. read more

I wish I lived closer to Natural Grocers. I am impressed by their unflagging commitment to their ethics...it's not something you often find in a business these days. I love that they ONLY sell organic produce and in quantities they can be sure of selling with little waste left over. I wish every store would get on the no-bag bandwagon. It would save the world a lot of trouble! So many stores market themselves as farmer's markets, or natural stores and then do and sell everything Walmart would. This is different. read more

I wouldn't replace my regular grocery store with Natural Grocers, but they are great place to stock up on specialty health foods (think vegan, gluten-free, organic). There's hemp ice cream, raw cacao, and the most INTENSE supplements aisles I have ever seen. read more

i love this store. I love wheatsville too but sometimes i just want to go to the store in my pjs for some whip cream and yogurt and not feel like a hobo at a cool kids party. this is my place. very casual, friendly staff and not pretentious. they are a wee bit limited but i never go if i have a really specific list. I feel like its cheaper than the other options and they do have good products. I agree its often freezing but lately i have noticed this has improved so maybe they read the reviews here! My major complaints are the hours (who closes at 8??) and the fact they don't have a lot of ready to eat options but i can always go to wheatsville for that... read more

There is a larger and better produce selection at Wheatsville (more local). But for dry and packaged goods, this is the place to go. Note: Coconut water is much cheaper here! I LOVE this store...the employees are SOOO friendly and very helpful - especially in the vitamin section - wow! I have been so impressed - and the prices...WAYY cheaper than the other outfits in town (unless on sale at other shops - and produce is not as inexpensive)...I mean Tom's Baba sells here for $2.65 and sells at TOM's for $2.99 - how can you go wrong?!? Really nice staff, small produce selection but what is there is always on point. *FYI the $2 "about to ripen out of commission" fruit and veg bags are an AMAZING idea. Never change this please! The packaged goods can get pretty pricey but again, high quality merch. I like that you can get unsalted nuts at a cheaper price than the salted, I'd have gone for the unsalted anyway but it's a nice bonus. It's a block and a half away from my house so I definitely appreciate the convenience and quality but unfortunately can't afford to shop there for staples, but rather when I am too tired to go to HEB or just need one or two items. I'm still giving it 5 stars because I understand why the prices are the way they are, and they are so nice there! read more

This is one of my favorite neighborhood groceries. I have a tendency to grab food for lunch on the go, and the store is designed to make that effortless. I pick up some fruit, a sandwich, a bag of chips, and I'm right back out the door happy and healthy. If you do decided to buy more than just lunch be sure to bring a shopping bag. This place will be my go to place for essential oils, organic hair products, and maybe vitamins. I went here yesterday because I was looking for tea tree oil and jojoba oil for my hair and found they have a whole selection essential oils. They even carry Aubrey Organics shampoo and conditioner which is something you can't find in stores. But it's the island versions which I don't use but I may try it. I didn't have a chance to walk around and check out the other things they carry since I was mainly focused on getting my oils but I will be back so there will be other times to look. read more

I love this place! It's a 2 minute walk from my apartment, so I run in there at least every other day. If you're in the mood to grab a kind of quick lunch then it's lacking a bit due to no salad bar or pre-made salads and just a couple of sandwich/wraps, but I'm just used to that by now. I'm a kombucha feign and this store sells it for cheaper than I've found anywhere else in town! They also have cheap banana chips, dates, and coconut date rolls. I know that I can find the healthy version of whatever I'm craving here; whether it be some type of bar or even coconut milk ice cream. Also, pretty much half of the store is vitamins/health remedies. I wanted to try a holistic cold medicine, and the homeopathic one that I bought here works great! read more

Great prices and selection, but I hate the place because they never staff the check-out counters well enough. I always wait far too long there compared to the Coop, Whole Foods or HEB. I would go there a lot more if they did a better job with that. Even when they call for help, it takes forever for someone to open another register. First time there, and I like the place. Better prices than Wheatsville and extremely better than Whole Foods. Whole Foods should really be ashamed because their home is Atx and their stores there aren't that great. NG has a good selection, the store is clean and well organized, the service was cool. The customers in there are very friendly actually more friendly than the cashier I encountered that day. I do recommend and would go back. I love their whole body section such a great variety. I diligently shop in phases with a very precisely calculated list that is budgeted and meal-planned within an inch of its life. Hi, I'm totally a mom and I have cooking magazines and a dry-erase board of weekly chores n meals to prove it. (Shaddap I used to be punk rock, I swear!!! 1234!!! I promise I don't drive a minivan... yet?) Ahem. Anyways, I like to get the cheap stuff out of the way first, and gradually work my way up through the more expensive stores to ultimately complete said list. The last time I went here, I probably would have given them three stars, but things are looking up. Refrigerated meat can now be found in the open coolers- which is quite the prize considering last time there was but a paltry selection of exclusively frozen meat. Some of the cons include a seriously scant produce section, and diapers that are just as expensive as Whole Foods. (For that, we always have HEB). The "bulk" section warrants its own commentary. Yes, I used those parentheses on purpose because I'm not sure it's appropriately named. You see, although a vast and varied selection of dried sundries there be, um, it's all pre-packaged! Great prices, nonetheless on that stuff, and perhaps the ubiquitous lack of self-serve bins is worth it in the fight against pantry moths. (See my review of Sun Harvest, who seem to be unapologetically plagued by the suckers). Alas, I'm such a picky shopper and eater that I don't know that I'll ever find a one-stop shop. I am, however, very glad to say that this place will now reside as second on my list of supermarket errands, which currently reads, in order of cheapness: HEB, Natural Grocers, Central Market, Whole Foods. I stopped in today as I went past on my way to work. I think that today was the first day they were open but I am not certain based on Nick's earlier review. I didn't know exactly what to expect but I was anticipating something like Wheatsville or Sun Harvest. This was not what it was like though. As Nick said, it was more like a GNC/Wheatsville hybrid, with a full sized GNC inside with a mini Wheatsville. I found the grocery part too small to warrant going there to shop for food unless I was there for supplements already, as half the store was dedicated to supplements. The homeopathic section was 3-4 times bigger than in most other natural food stores, which I found disappointing since it a huge scam and even those that support homeopathic "remedies" admit that in most of the vials there will not be a single molecule (literally) of what it claims on the label. The food prices seemed a bit high to me, esp by comparison to Sun Harvest. I would go back here for supplements but if I was going on a dedicated food trip, I would go to Wheatsville if I was in the Hyde Park neighborhood. read more

Natural Grocers is my go-to for vegetables, juice, organic dried fruits/nuts, and water. Yes, water. Their brand of water has a crisp and clean taste between the Smart Water and Fiji points on the bottled water spectrum, noticeably superior to Ozarka, although Ozarka is better than anything Coke or Pepsi pumps out of untreated town water supplies through hoses stranded in the back of abandoned office parks then renames the sludge "Nestle" or "Dasani". The prices here are higher than Trader Joe's, lower than Whole Foods, and around Central Market. The staff is almost entirely cool, although my one gripe with this spot is that one of the register front end associates feels it essential to comment on the cost of items then complain about their lack of money and hate of their job. I get it, most people don't like working, but please don't shower me with negativity when I'm just trying to pick up some natural vittles, man! Keep it positive, or at least neutral. Beyond that though great spot for your natural goodness needs, just figure out which one of the cashiers is the negative aura waiting for an unsuspecting customer to vent their frustrations onto, then do not engage, pay attention to your groceries, pay, say good day, and escape! read more
