This review is strictly for the hot/cold food bar area and the Hydration Station Café. I came in here for the first time since Natural Pantry was still in the University Center Mall years ago. When I came in, the remodeled version in their current location reminded me of the Trader Joe's down in Raleigh, NC and a lot more spacious than the New Sagaya down the street. I went over to their salad bar across from the produce area to grab some lunch. There were a lot of working regulars that come here for their lunch break. The café was packed during lunch rush, but seat turnover was constant and I didn't have a problem getting a table. The seating area of the Hydration Station is wide open with a fireplace by the café entrance as well as counters and tables lined up along the windows for diners. The atmosphere of the café is a lot better here than the closed-in feeling I get when I eat at the New Sagaya a couple of blocks away. The café itself looks like a good place to study when it isn't so crowded or busy. There are reasons why I decided on the two stars rather than three and that determination was pretty clear after my visit here. The salad bar had a good selection of vegetables, soups, and side dishes. I was able to get a good mix of romaine lettuce, Spanish olives, Brussel sprouts, hard-boiled eggs, Roma tomatoes, white corn, Lima beans, smoked turkey breast, jicama, blue cheese crumbles, red onions, and blue cheese dressing. The problem here is that the boxes they use for the salad bar are the thin cardboard boxes rather than the clear ones that Carrs has for their food bar. Fred Meyers also uses these too and it is frustrating because these are the worst containers to use for salad. The salad itself doesn't settle well in these boxes and by the time I got to a table to sit down and eat, I opened the box and it was a cluttered mess with the dressing smeared all over the inside covers of the box. Another issue was the price of the salad bar. Since it was difficult for me to gauge the amount of salad I had in the box, I took what I thought was a reasonable amount for lunch and it came up to a little over $15.00 at the register. Had they carried the clear containers like Carrs, it would've been easier to determine how much I could put in there without going over ten dollars. Service at the registers seemed unorganized and scarce. There were only three or four stations open for the large number of customers waiting in line. The cashiers were noticeably slow and there was no sense of urgency when the lines started to build up. I had to hop from one register to another when the line seemed like it didn't move at all even if the customers paying only had a couple of items that needed to be rung up. I will probably return but only to visit the café to grab a cup of coffee and to study in their seating area for a couple of hours. When it comes to shopping or paying at the registers, this place has the same sense of chaos and confusion similar to the Wal-Mart across the street. Hopefully, Natural Pantry sees this review and works on fixing those issues if they ever hope to see a positive uptick from the reviews posted on here. read more

After months of delayed openings the day has finally come where the new natural pantry off of 36th and A Street has opened. I went there today and by all accounts it was a disappointment. The solberg family seemed to bite off way more than they could chew with this one, as evidenced by them constantly pushing back their open date for the new one, and the close date for the old one. They also seemed to have not updated their website with the new location, and their Facebook doesn't have an address for it. Thanks to all of their delays the food in the store has now gone bad, the meat is bloated, the produce looks bad, and everything just didnt look as fresh as it should, especially considering the newness of the store. Hopefully the solberg family can turn this into what it has the potential to be, but as of now it's been a huge disappointment after Months of anticipation. What I don't like is the prices are almost always so inflated. This place pains me. Several years ago when it first opened up I gave it three solid tries. The customer service is some of the worst in town. The employees seem unhappy and really aren't helpful at all. I swore this place off For years until today. I thought I would try again because there are some things that I was looking for I couldn't find at the other grocery stores. I found what I was looking for, which is the good news. I'm pretty sure I drained my bank account just for those few items however. I get the fact that you pay a little more for organics and good quality, but I don't even know how this place stays in business with their prices. Like many, I am one of those that tends to have a love/hate relationship with Natural Pantry. But when you live a lifestyle of being gluten, soy and dairy free in a town without a Whole Foods, Sprouts or Trader Joes, you are forced to find a middle ground of accepting their faults. Overall the location is a great central point in midtown. Depending on what time of day you go, will tell you whether you are able to find parking. If its lunch time or right after work you will likely find yourself circling the lot several times to try and squeeze into a parking space. Especially in winter when Alaskans have an interesting idea of what constitutes a parking space with the snow on the ground for months at a time. Natural Pantry has been very helpful to me when it comes to carrying gluten, soy and dairy free products. Which is expanding every day as more and more people turn to living this type of lifestyle. The prices still are horribly high and will likely always be. Just as some of the employees are still not overly helpful. When you find the helpful ones working, I make a beeline for their check out or will follow them around the store if I have a question. I promise y'all I'm not stalking you. I just don't wish to be yelled at for having a question like I have been previously. And the number of cashiers? Will always remain a huge problem. They have a plethora of cashiers stands and you usually only find 2-3 open. Someone tell me what is the point of this? And the quality of the produce or expired eggs. Don't get me started on this. Sloppy aisles all the time. Carts full and wheeled in the middle of aisles, shelves empty most of the time. No, has nothing to do with the covid-19, It's like this all the time. No music and the place is dreary and unwelcoming. Cashiers never ask if I have found everything I needed. The workers stocking the shelves rarely acknowledge the customers it seems they want to bury their heads. Customer service in general in Anchorage lacks good satisfaction. Don't recommend shopping here that often! Have been to plenty of organic and all natural stores in the lower 48, such as in California and Michigan. We all know that Alaska doesnt have much but Natural Pantry really is lacking. Only nice thing about this place is the new location is a big upgrade on interior. However... - Organic pressed juices are priced high at $10+ for a small bottle. My recommendation is that you buy your own juicer and make it yourself. Will save you a lot of money and it will be fresher! (Plus you know exactly whats goes into it). - Organic Almonds are $14 per pound. That's just cazy expensive. - Zico Premium Coconut Water container at $7! You can get the same coconut water for $4 at other stores. - Needed raw protein powder but the prices cost more than purchasing it at an online store. (Example: vitacost.com) It's a cheaper place to get it. - Certain things I wanted, usually not in stock. There are several aisle that have empty spaces. Don't always except to find an item you want. Coming to Anchorage was made a little easier with a similar store like my favorites at home, Natural Pantry. The appearance alone is persuading enough to come in, with a modern design and neutral color scheme. Upon entering your senses are bombarded with natural and organic smells from the fresh food buffet. It's a mini Walmart of healthy and organic items from kitchenware to great foods. I love natural pantry. Some cities don't have a store like this and sad for that place. Let me tell you what I know and what I think; NP is a family run business and a very nice family indeed. They had a store over in the University mall for years. It was well stocked and they out grew it. Ever since they built the new store they've struggled the keep it well stocked. Being so large it's difficult to find things. They carry a lot of items and if one uses alternative medicine they are a wonderful resource. The biggest reason I'm finally writing this review is what happened two days ago. Since I needed to pick up some papaya enzyme I got some lunch there, as well. I took a seat over in the hydration station at a high top table, by the window. I slung my purse over the chair and enjoyed my lunch. Their food is very good! My next stop, at the post office revealed I had forgotten my purse! I called NP and told them. Also that I was on my way back. 20 minutes later I went to the customer service counter at NP and the young man gave me my purse. I showed him my picture ID. I was not surprised to find everything intact, including $100 cash. I'm sorry this family doesn't find friendly help for this store. I read the reviews and they are true. I really like the new location. I love the modern feel. The prices are quite high though. I mail order a lot of dry goods that I can find here for a song. A lot of items are not even 'organic'. I go to the deli area to get their famous cucumber tomato salad. I had siracha pulled pork this time for dinner and it was sweet and only mildly spicy it had peppers in it and sauerkraut? I think. I just can't resist the Just Desserts cupcakes. There are a lot of body care products that I buy here so I'm satisfied there. I had high hopes with the new location, but years later it still looks like they haven't unpacked. I'm an avid supporter of local businesses - but never before have I seen such terrible customer service. If you manage to actually find an employee they seem rather inconvenienced by your presence. I once tried to return an item politely because it was broken and ineffective and they actually called the producer and made me talk to them on the phone, prohibiting me from returning it because the producer wouldn't give THEM money back. I do appreciate the vast variety of items the store has to offer, but it is really hard to support a store that gives local businesses such a bad rep. read more

First, I absolutely love the HUGE selection of items in this store. The two-star rating has nothing to do with the store itself or what they sell. Unfortunately, EVERY time I go into this store, I cringe, knowing that when I check out, the cashier is going to show you their I-don't-want-to-be-here presence. On only ONE occasion have I gone to this store and there was a friendly cashier (younger girl with kooky hats...very friendly!). Today was the last straw. Oreganol 120 capsule bottle $30 on Amazon with free shipping if you are a Prime member. At Natural Pantry they seem to think it's worth $47.99. ALL of the supplements are like this. Also, Natural Pantry has NEVER been a clean store. It's dusty, dirty, messy everywhere there are shelves. It doesn't matter if you visited NP back in the 80's when they were out in Dimond to their store in the University Center Mall or their new store. Cleanliness has never been high on the list. Overall, NP offers products not typically carried in most major stores which apparently means they can scalp the products to the masses. They don't get the concept of cleaning. This is the emergency, gotta have it now grocery store. I've seen cheaper prices at other stores in the area and online. Store Upkeep: For me, this is a deal breaker. The outside of the store is fab, but the inside is clutter. I see someone else had the exact same thought I did on this place - it makes Whole Foods seem like a bargain! We used to shop at Whole Foods all the time. It has a great selection of organic fruits and vegetables, hormone-free meat, great cheese selection, healthy snacks, etc. In two places I lived, it even had a Tap Room, with great beer options. I compare prices, and while we did not purchase all of our food there, it was the best place for organic options. When we first moved here a year ago, I as excited to see Natural Pantry - it was in a great location, in a great building, and local. And then I got inside. Why did it look like parts of the store were not fully functional, yet? Was the store that new, that it was still moving in? No. The last time I went, it didn't look like anything had changed. I went to see if they had my favorite snack foods that I would get at Whole Foods. They had some of them, and the ones they did carry - why were they more expensive here? These aren't fresh items, but packaged. And need I say that there is no excuse for charging more to get something here, than what is charged to get something in Hawaii. This is price gouging. And for what seems like such a big store, why did it offer so much less than a Whole Foods smaller in size? They do not do a good job restocking items, and there is always long lines at the checkout counter. Why do they not call other people up when the lines are that long? The wait to purchase a few items is enough to make me not want to come back. I like that it has a food bar, but it's not anywhere as good, or has the variety as what Whole Foods offers. This place just makes me wish we had a Whole Foods here, quite frankly. Since both the prices and customer service are always so bad here, I've looked elsehere and found that I can get a decent amount of organics if I look hard enough at Fred Meyers, Carrs, New Sagaya, or online. This review is strictly for the Hydration Station, not the store as a whole. We were in the Cuddy park and decided to walk over to the new Natural Pantry location to get something to drink. With a name like "Hydration Station" you would think they had a plethora of drink options to choose from. But, to my disappointment they only had less than a hand full of smoothie options (4-5), and not more to choose from on the fresh juice selection. I ordered the Good Morning juice (8oz $4.50) consisted of apple, lemon and ginger. In terms of flavor it was good, the apple flavor was very strong, it was definitely tart, but nicely refreshing. Our second order was for the Tropical Blast smoothie ($6.50) which contained pineapple, mango and banana. The pineapple was really overpowering, and it seemed as though they were using frozen mangos. Which was disappointing. Overall the service wasn't anything to rant or rave about. Initially they got our order wrong and made the wrong smoothie, but corrected the issue with no problem. I'm hoping they will add more options to their juice and smoothie menu, a small handful of items isn't exactly my idea of hydration. read more

I want to caution anyone going in here due to what I witnessed today: there was a woman shopping by herself being following by a man in the store & she was very upset and repeatedly told him to step away from her. he proceeded to hold up his phone (he was recording) & he was standing extremely close to her ALMOST touching her. She walked off & he followed her aggressively. I ended up checking out behind her (she paid for her groceries) & the man harassing her was slamming carts around the front of the store staring at her. The whole thing was distressing to watch & from my perspective looked like this woman was being harassed. I mentioned what I had seen to the cashier & she explained that they "86 some people from the store, for trespassing" ?? Anyway, regardless of what the situation was, watching a male employee aggressively try to dominate, almost touch & film a woman who has repeatedly asked him to leave her alone (holding a phone right in her face) is NOT the way to handle whatever the situation is: call the police or something. I will not be returning to this store again ever after what I witnessed today & I really want to anyone shopping here to please be aware that some of the employees have no problem behaving in this manner. I have mixed feelings about the pantry. It's expensive and makes me long for the packed aisles of whole foods and the prices of Trader Joes. It's a bit disorganized but if you can find someone to help you they are generally happy to help. But it's a place where I can get gluten free options that I can't get anywhere else in town. The hot bar has delicious options and the allergies are clearly listed (a huge pro for those with allergies). When I returned to Alaska, I was glad to hear that Natural Pantry had opened a new location on 36th and A streets. I was glad they chose to open the location in Midtown, and that instead of a new office building, we got a brand-spankin' new Natural Pantry. The new NP has a coffee and juice bar, and I like the variety of regular and sugar-free syrups they have for their lattes. I had an almond latte on one visit, and I spent a few minutes debating between amaretto and almond. The young barista had not tried these flavors, and could not recommend one syrup or even tell me what the amaretto flavor tasted like. After grabbing my morning coffee, I ventured into the store. I wouldn't recommend this for tourists or for students going to or coming from school. The store has a strict no-backpack policy, and it can be such a hassle to drop off backpacks at the customer service desk. I understand this policy at say, a video or game store, but I am skeptical that this policy is necessary at NP. The store itself has a variety of organic and natural foods, and if you're looking for a Whole Foods in Alaska, this is it. read more

Employees can never be found. Lines are extraordinarily long The prices are astronomical, I mean I know things are more expensive up here... But dang! The parking lot is a disaster. People never put their shopping carts back. You'll find many congregations of carts gathering around the lot. Along with people wearing fitbits, but can't be bothered to walk an extra 100 feet to put their carts away. I just had three items and it took her so long to check me out. It was as if her hands or arms were in pain. I found EVERYTHING I needed and although the cashiers weren't sure where things were, the people working there did. They seem to be a little short staffed, but I saw hiring signs. It looks like they are truly cleaning up the store. Their bulk section is pleasant to walk through and their fruits and veggies are organized, fresh, and reasonably priced. Thought a weekday at 9am open would be a good time to visit. Staff had much slower clocks than the people waiting outside. When finally got in went over to the produce section. Same ol Natural Pantry. Stared at a lot of empty shelves. Worker came over to say they had produce in the back and they would put out. So a 9am store opening apparently doesn't mean they are ready to sell at 9am. What was out there was the same horrible rotting selection from the old store. Followed this immediately by going over to the packaged Naan section. Almost all had expired several weeks before. WTF? Then noticed the prices were ridiculous. There used to be some sanity in pricing at the old store. Now it seemed everything was just Carrs plus 20%. Store itself is, of course, much larger and more comfortable, and cleaner. Non-produce selection is good, and there are some items here that aren't found at the big chains. Once you step in to their store, you'll see not just a wide variety of great tasting food, but a whole lot of healthy options. They have it there from Fresh Produce to dried berries to Gluten Free foods. I especially love their Salad and Hot Food Bar. Am I glad to have this store, the biggest provider of organic food and products around? Sure. They do offer a large selection of items not found elsewhere. My husband particularly loves the large array of hot sauces. But there are three issues that make this store only an occasional stop for me. First, the high price for basic organic sundries (meaning I'll either order online or get them at Sagaya or Freddy's if available). Second, they have strange organization that can be hard to navigate. I spend more time finding my vitamins than would be necessary if they had more intuitive placement. Third, their stock is extremely unreliable, and I am constantly frustrated by long lags between restocking. It can take a few weeks for something as simple as vitamin D pills. Not only does their meat section never seems to have what I need, the counter person there will tell me they'll get more in, but it doesn't show! And he'll act like I'm the crazy one for coming back on the day he told me to return. They do have a little cafe with some good juices (the only thing I've tried there). The takeout area looks impressive, but they tend not to have any meals that really appeal. I did get a pre-made sandwich from there that was fine. Overall, they don't add much to my home since I can only buy a couple of things each time and still have to do most of my shopping elsewhere. But I do take advantage now and then. read more
