Interesting little shop we came across here. I typically walk into a baby shop and hate it, all of the products are crap - made in china, unknowledgeable staff, stuff is meant to look cute rather than safe/functional. I generally leave disgusted and feel I must research on my own to find what I am looking for. I did not get that feeling at Natural Resources. What a surprise. I've been doing a lot of online research into natural and non-toxic baby products and found that all of the products I've selected in my research are offered here. Not only that, they have a well trained staff to help educate you on choosing what's right for you - i.e. baby carriers, diapering, feeding, etc. Kinda expensive compared to the prices you can find online, but I guess they gotta pay rent. Looks like they also hold classes here, I might have to give some a shot. My very first visit showed that this shop has quite a bit of promise. read more

I LOVE this place! My husband and I took a couple of classes here before having our first baby. They were great, but I cannot say enough about what an amazing resource this place has been since brining our little girl into the world. The Breastfeeding Support Circle helped me learn new positions so I could feed without any pain, in fact, it has become a pleasure. I've met wonderful new mom friends at the New Parents Support Group. Their products are great and the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Granola? That's just a label. Everyone wants to make the best choices for the health of their children and the environment they grow up in. I'm an advocate of this store. I have found them helpful for obtaining information for a whole range of topics that every new parent faces. The store offers a lot of useful products for mom and baby. It does cost more, but it's up to you to decide what is a good investment. They offer information and workshops on doulas, diapering, breastfeeding, etc. And they have a program to educate other people who are interested in helping mothers. I'm meeting with a potential doula tomorrow and found the "Meet the Doulas" session informative. So far, it's worked out for me. I think a previous reviewer had different expectations. If you're looking for more support from other mothers, the Berkeley Parents Network is a great free resource, and Golden Gate Mothers Group is supposed to be worth the membership fee. read more

They have products you can easily purchase online or at target where you are allowed to make returns without a hassle. But they did have a few things I liked. The classes are ok but expensive and I had difficulty with signing up. Maybe it was the website IDK. My class started late and ran late which was inconvenient since I had to park and commute. read more

Natural Resources is a great place to weigh your baby, change your baby, get help with pumping advice, and meet new parents. I hear it's also good for finding doulas and midwives if you want a home birth. My 3 star review comes from my experience with their birth classes. My husband and I took the 2-day intensive birth classes and the breastfeeding course to prepare for the birth of our son. We found both of the classes to be relatively unhelpful and left feeling like we had wasted our money. To be entirely fair to Natural Resources, birth classes are kind of like learning how to drive a car by reading only the manual. With that in mind it would be great if the classes were more centered on building a community of parents to help each other out after the big day and less on techniques that you won't even remember (we certainly didn't). read more

This is the place to go if you are looking to learn all things about birthing! I took an amazing birthing class here and am still friends with people who were a part of the class. We have benefited from Natural Resources in so many ways. To begin with, we were connected to our amazing homebirth midwife at NR's Meet the Midwives event. Since then, I have participated in NR's Breastfeeding Mother's Group, Yeshi's Mothers Circle, and the Going Back to Work seminar, and my husband has dropped in to the New Dad's Group. All of the info and the resources that we have been connected to at NR have been instrumental in our positive birth experience and experience as new parents to our first child this year. I will agree with some of the others, that there was one employee that was rude on multiple occasions earlier this fall, but I believe the management has made some changes and as of my last two visits this same employee has been super nice and helpful to me as well as to some of my other new mamma friends. Maybe it was the below reviews, or enough customer comments to the management, but I think the issue has been resolved. Anyway, Natural Resources, is a gem for expecting and new parents and I am so happy to see the store experiencing a revival! read more

At least it is the store you would expect if people actually had babies in this town... for those of us that are having babies in this town, it's a very good thing. This place has super cute baby clothes, the right BPA free, chemical free products that are truly the best for not only our children but for us all! Lots of baby products 7 some toys. They have maternity clothes & bras. Natural Resources also offers a ton of classes for both during your pregnancy & after. We took their Childbirth series -- six weeks, three hours a week. Seemed extreme, and at times, it was overly thorough. But, overall it was great and I actually managed to have the baby without drugs. I go there now for baby stuff, and to breastfeed if we're out and about and the babe is freaking. They've got water, cookies and nice chairs. The staff is funny and helpful. Parking is non-metered and pretty easy, too! read more

My wife and I attended the Birthing classes with Chris Pritchard and she was freaking awesome! Not only was she informative, but her sense of wit and humor also kept us throughly engaged through six 3 hour sessions. Natural resources offers several different classes on different topics and Chris stood out amongst the other teachers. We highly recommend this business for their books, curated products for babies, and classes for budding parents to be. We also rented a birthing tub here, and found 99% of all our baby supplies. If you are an expectant couple or just had your baby recently, I highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

We love natural Resources. They have great classes with awesome instructors, they are a great resource for all sorts of pre-natal and baby needs, and the store carries the safe and natural versions of all the baby items we need. I love just going in there to change and weigh our baby when I'm in the neighborhood. It's a great chill environment. They have a breastfeeding circle, which my partner found very helpful during the early breastfeeding challenges. We took our childbirth classes here (the 6 week natural birth class) and it was so helpful. Tracy was our instructor, and I would highly recommend her, as well. I also took a baby massage class here, though my baby was a bit too curious about the other babies to actually get a massage. The classes here are much better than the classes we took at UCSF. They don't feel at all rushed, which in a birth class is extremely important. The goal here is to become familiar and relaxed with the methods to help you in your labor, and to be as informed as possible, but in a relaxed comforting way. At UCSF we felt the information was packed so tightly into a short time that it was stressful. At Natural Resources, there was time to absorb and practice the methods, and also get to know one another. We are still friends with some of our classmates. The staff is awesome, helpful and enthusiastic about babies. read more

This place was really a lifesaver when I had my first child. They helped me find a Moby wrap, and they helped me with the breastfeeding support classes. They didn't solve all of my breastfeeding issues (with the 2nd child, I was able to hire a doula who was also a lactation consultant), but they were very sweet and helpful. It's a great neighborhood resource. They also have a nice store selection of things like glass bottles, pump parts, and assorted baby gear. read more

Don't waste your money taking the CPR class here. I have taken the CPR class 3 times at the American Red Cross but because Natural Resources is very close to my house this time I decided to take the class here ... big mistake , the instructor doesn't know how to explain the cpr , she didn't explain correctly how to position the fingers and how many you have to put on the babies' s chest , she didn't explain how much pressure can be exerted on the chest which is very important because if you put too much pressure in the wrong position you could break a small cartilage (xiphoid process) that is just below the sternum... anyway they have good and nice stuff but it was the worst CPR class. read more

I so want to give this place a 5 star review because it so grateful that it exists at all. It's nice to have something close by where you can take classes, meet other parents, and buy your emergency supplies (like breast pump tubing....not exactly a target purchase). It's close to where I live and that alone wins stars from me. The reason that I'm taking a star off is for a few reason. First of all, the pricing is pretty outrageous here and it seems like they really inflate things with parental emergencies in mind. A little mark up is fine but to charge twice what amazon does is ridiculous. Also, although many of the classes are great, the prices for those are pretty high as well. $20 for a 45 minute baby rock and roll class is just way, way too much! Finally, I know that working here can't be easy - crying babies, nervous new parents (of which I am one), and so many other headaches, but the staff really lets you know how miserable they are. I'm sure it's not intentional, but you can cut the tension and frustration with a knife. This is not exactly the kind of warm and inviting environment that I want to bring my child to. Overall a great place just because it exists, but there are definitely some pricing and staff issues that need to be figured out read more

I have given this place three tries; three chances to get it right and treat me like not only a paying customer, but like a human being. All three times were so unpleasant. I was ignored, made to feel like an idiot by my first-time mom questions, and overall seemed to be bothering the sales woman when I would have hunt them down to simply ask a question. And oh, that young brunette, what is her deal? Such a charmer. How on earth does she still have a job??? Someone needs to clue her in that customer service is not her forte. It's 3 strikes and they're out for me. I will happily spend my money elsewhere (and pay much less while I'm at it)! read more

Their childbirth prep class was very long and very pointless. They don't spend a lot of time going over breathing techniques, which is the main thing I needed to know when I went into labor. They present a lot of other useless crap and it takes them at least 12 hours to do it. The newborn care class is better, however I am now upset with that one as well, because the teacher said "and maybe you will want to give your kids the vaccines, or maybe you'll decide not to vaccinate them and that's ok too." What BS. The breast feeding class was all right, although I learned a lot of the same information just by reading the "nursing mothers companion." Take the hospital's childbirth prep class instead. read more

I really would love to give Natural Resources a great review. I think the concept is great! The shop is very sweet and they have introduced me to several new brands. It is however extremely overpriced though and they charge a small fortune if you have an overdue book or DVD. I checked out some books but I just forgot to return them and they charged me $30! This is for a used book printed 10 years ago and a birth video produced eons ago. I could have bought them myself. Unreal! The public library charges less for fines! However- during my maternity leave I will say that this was a godsend for breastfeeding breaks while walking around my neighborhood. They have a nice setup for nursing and changing tables etc. However, I totally agree with several other posters here on the rudeness of whoever this woman is that is there all the time. Medium height, mousey brown hair. She often works on the weekends and she just always has a scowl and a snotty attitude and I am SO Sooooooo over it....She really really brings the place down. I have had several unpleasant interactions with her as have my friends which makes me not want to recommend it to others nor renew my membership. I wonder why she works in customer service. She seems to be frustrated, angry and is very snooty and passive aggressive. I would go in and use my membership mor but I dread going in there and having to deal with her! One day I was walking by and The shop was open a little early (10 minutes) because of a class. I really needed diapers so I went in early and was looking around. She blows in and starts bitching about how they aren't really open and that is going to take her 15-20 minutes before she can check me out. This is ridiculous!!! I am not a high maintenance person but boy did she make me feel that way. Finally she did check me out early but boy did she make a big stink about it Another time I was trying to ask about a class and this woman just turned her back to me and started talking to another employee about her pregnant friend and going on and on and ON about HER life when I was just trying to get information and PAY for a class! Every interaction with her is just really kind of painful. She is a truly a detriment to your company and for building a community Natural Resources!!!! During one of the classes we did attend - my husband left his favorite sweatshirt in there. We called to see if she could just look and see if it was there. She was short and snippy to him and had obviously not bothered to look for the sweatshirt that had been left behind just a few hours ago. Honestly- its such a bummer that this woman works there otherwise I would use Natural Resources so much more and would renew my membership and reccommend it to friends but I will not until thing improve. Bad customer service. I've come here twice (once pregnant and once with my newborn) and the sales associates are not helpful at all. I struggled to try on a baby carrier and the sales associate just stared at me. Every time I asked her a question about the baby carrier she acted as if I was bothering her. To make matters worse, I got stuck while using the carrier and couldn't take it off. I asked her for help and she seemed upset I talked to her. The sales associates need to learn how to provide basic customer service. Also, their stuff is cheaper online. Why do people come here? Service is horrible and things are overpriced! I have been going there for about a year and a half. I have heard all about how rude the employees are, but until about 3 months ago most of the nice employees have off set the rude ones. About 6 months ago, I went it to nurse and was having a hard time. An employee was rude; I cried. She saw what she had done and totally helped me out and made it right. I chalked it up to me being a hormonal new mom. Then three months ago I went in and a different employee was so rude to me it was crazy. Even the other new mom in the room left the store. Then I went back a different time on a different day hoping to get a better employee and I got the same one. She walked around the room loudly talking on the phone as I nursed and put my baby to sleep. She was oblivious to the fact that I was trying to calm down a sad baby. Then I tried to buy something and asked for help and she said, "what you need help now?" I said yes, she sighed and tossed the stuff she was working on on the ground. She wouldn't help me with the carrier and got annoyed at me for asking questions. I went in one more time to buy a carrier and she was there again! I got a different person to help me but she kept butting in with rude comments. It was so annoying. I almost walked out. I have not been there since. I took 4 classes there and wanted to support the small business even though things are much cheaper online. But that woman was so rude and she seems to always be there. read more

I love this place. It's like a safe haven for new parents amidst a sea of hip adult-only spaces on Valencia. It was my first outing with my baby- just to practice leaving the house. I always feel welcome here, even if I'm not shopping. I can sit and nurse, change my baby, have a snack, go to the bathroom, etc. I'm a member so I rented multiple carriers before buying (a genius service) and also rented my birth tub here. All the staff have always been warm and helpful. I can't say enough good things, I'm so grateful for them!! read more

Look, I am a natural kind of gal: having natural drug-free deliveries, using cloth diapers, breast feeding my babies, etc. I've always heard wonderful things about this place, but I was disappointed by my customer service experience. My newborn was having latch-on issues and my hospital lactation consultant recommended I go to Natural Resources to buy breast shields. When I got there the staff really scolded me for wanting to use the shields, saying it was a crutch and my baby could become dependent on them. After the purchase the lactation consultant, without introducing herself or asking about my situation, stopped me at the door and scolded me about using them. If this were my first child I would have really been shaken up over their approach. My husband was there holding our infant son and he was completely ignored the entire time we were there. Staff walked right past him or didn't look at him when they were talking to me. Very rude. We won't go back. P.S. My son only used the shields for a couple of weeks. He's a healthy eater and thriving! read more

Came for Noe Venable's Meadowlark Music Class, and loved the warm vibe and cleanliness of the place. Great customer service and product selection for breastfeeding mamas and babywearers, as well. Complimentary water and cookies, plus natural toys for toddlers to play with, were also a plus. Natural Resources is definitely a space for higher-income SF residents, though. I'd love to see more courses geared toward lower-income residents because we're not all in tech. Maybe even some outreach work. That being said, I wish I had known of this community place when I had a newborn! read more

The Good: Unique store that offers a lot of options and knowledge on all things infant/toddler. They offer a comfortable environment to ask dumb questions and even change/nurse your newborn. Great educational resources too!! The Bad: Bought a $300 dollar breast pump that I was told I could return (our insurance ended up covering another manufacturer) Literally drove home and saw the fine print on the receipt that said STORE CREDIT ONLY. Called about an hour after purchase and it was coldly confirmed by the clerk and manager that I was SOL. C'mon this is customer service at its worst !!! My receipt came to nearly $500 with the other items I had bought that day, including an annual membership. Be warned and read the fine print.....I see no evidence that these folks care about pleasing their customer, just protecting their revenues. Truth is that this is a great place to go and I'll probably be back once the wounds heal, but I have a bad taste for now. For everyone that I recommend it to I'll also need to be honest and let them know that I feel like a very poorly treated customer. I've had better experiences at the DMV!! read more

When I walk into a baby boutique, I'd like to have a nice greeting or maybe a smile or two from the employees. Natural Resources is such a wonderful resource for the neighborhood and full of wonderful people. I have attended classes, stopped by to breastfeed my baby, rented a breast pump, and purchased items I needed for pregnancy and postpartum here. I can't recommend this place highly enough! I am very confused by previous reviews that state staff were rude or unhelpful, as that is absolutely not the case and literally every person who has helped me here has gone out of there way to make me feel comfortable, offer advice, and even bring me tea and water. read more

This was the only place in the Bay Area I could find that (a) had a baby carrier in stock that would fit my very small frame (a mei tai) and (b) had a worker with the knowledge to advise me how to fit it properly. Natural Resources has been a welcoming, supportive space in the community for so many years. The recent sprucing up of the store has made it an even more inviting atmosphere for me to go with my family. I did my baby registry here, and it felt so good to give my family and friends an introduction to Natural Resources through the items I'd chosen for my child. The folks who work there are trained educators, childbirth specialists, and experts in their field, but they have always given me the sense that they support the parent's intuition first. I've recently had the pleasure of running a group in their space, and I always leave feeling so inspired by the parents who make up the community of Natural Resources. read more

I'm grateful for the free playgroup they have and for a place to sit with my baby when she's being nuts and we're in the area. And sometimes you just need that one goop or cup and Natural Resources comes in very, very handy. But, I have to say, the classes did not meet my expectations. In the childbirth class, we watched the exact same videos they showed us at St. Luke's (for free). I also thought that the message of the teacher and materials was that INTERVENTIONS (!!!) are some sort of medical conspiracy to get you to deliver your baby in a way that's convenient for the hospital. I honestly didn't experience that and wish that those fears hadn't been planted in my head *by the class*. Also, I took a Strong Parent class or something, and the guy really had no idea what he was doing. He'd never heard of a diastasis recti (ab separation that can happen in pregnancy) and was encouraging pregnant women and women with ab separations to do plank exercises (don't do that!!!!). Also, we were all basically there to learn how to prevent back injuries when lifting heavy babies in and out of cribs and cars and when I asked about that he stared blankly. That was a wasted $35 - these classes aren't cheap. The childbirth one was hundreds of dollars. I also thought the newborn care class was *alright* but honestly, reading the Baby Owner's Manual tells you just as much, and it doesn't cost $100. read more

As a new parent living in the mission, this store is the closest one-stop baby shop near my home, and I really wanted to love it. The staff is helpful, but does take a little warming up to. There have been times when I come in for a specific product and not one salesperson says anything to me, which can leave a new parent feeling a bit uneasy about what I really need. Also, there are many items in the store when they only offer one type of item you are looking for (i.e., pacifier - who knows what kind of pacifier is going to work?). But one plus is, if you are in the hood needing to change your baby, feed your baby, weigh your baby, or pick up medela products, then this is a good stop for you. I do like that everything is natural and organic and I don't really mind the pricing, but a little more customer service for a new mom would really go a long way. read more
