Our tee time…read morewas 9:04, and by 9:06--while our last player (all women, by the way) was still on the tee box--the starter came up rushing us and telling people in our group to hurry up. Meanwhile, the group ahead of us had already started late and was still halfway down the fairway. So instead of addressing the actual delay, he chose to come after a group of women who were right on time and still in the process of teeing off. Completely unnecessary and not a great look. He even told us we couldn't take practice swings. At that point, it stops being about pace of play and starts feeling like we're just being singled out and rushed for no reason. It felt targeted, unprofessional, and honestly pretty disrespectful. Being rushed before you've even started sets the tone for the entire round--and not in a good way. To top it off, every green had just been freshly aerated. That's understandable for maintenance, but it absolutely affects play, and there was zero heads-up about it. Paying to putt on punched greens while also being rushed off the first tee? Not exactly a great experience. The irony is that when we finished, he told us we kept a great pace of play. So clearly his snap judgment was wrong--and he couldn't even acknowledge it or apologize. If you're going to manage pace, do it fairly and accurately. And if the course conditions aren't great, be upfront about it. This felt like poor management all around.

Little gem of a course at Balboa Park. This is the oldest muni course in San Diego at nearly 100…read moreyears old and the clubhouse is a San Diego City Historic Landmark. The moment you step into the clubhouse you realize the vast history of the location. For example, some parts are in need of major repair, but there are also nearly 100 years of player trophies and accomplishments on display in a large lobby time has not touched (nor cleaners, painters, renovators...but I digress). Don't miss the unbeatable hilltop views out the back of hole 1 and hole 18 side-by-side with the cityscape in the background. The same view can be seen from the restrooms, giving this place the best view from the loo award. I played the regulation 18 (they also have a nine hole executive course). The course was in good to very good condition. It's a fun, unique track and there are some very narrow holes, but fair enough because they are shorter. Accuracy off the tee is favored over length on most of the holes. There are also a few challenging elevation changes, but not many blind approach shots, which I don't think anyone enjoys. It's a fun track that keeps you on your toes. Many holes are lined by canyons so errant shots on those will be lost. Another unique aspect is that Balboa Park sits under the landing path of the airport. I tried to catch an airplane in my photos and it was pretty easy to in most all of them. Pace of play was fine at 4.5 hours on a weekday afternoon. Staff was friendly, but they deal with a lot of people so I could see how things could go sideways as some reviews have mentioned. Just exercise the golden rule. If you play golf and live in San Diego, I say this is a must play at least once. I'll be back again when I'm in the right mood.

I will not be playing at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul again anytime soon…read more I have lived in the Estates near the course for more than 12 years. Last weekend, while my son was driving on Jamul Drive, a golf ball struck his vehicle and shattered the windshield. He went to the pro shop and spoke with Alan, one of the managers, hoping for some guidance or assistance. Instead, Alan offered no help, showed very little concern, and made my son feel as though the incident was somehow his fault. I understand that the course may not accept direct responsibility for every stray golf ball, but basic customer service and compassion should still matter. At the very least, Steele Canyon could have offered a few rounds of golf or some other gesture to help offset the unexpected cost of replacing the windshield. After living here and supporting the course for so many years, the complete lack of concern was extremely disappointing. From now on, we will gladly drive a little farther to play at a course that values its neighbors and customers. Thank you, Alan and Steele Canyon Golf Club, for showing us exactly how little our support means.

The golf course is no longer named Sail Ho and it's open to the public. It's most a pitch and putt…read morepar 3 course. There are only a few holes that require a full swing off the tee. The signature hole is the 5th because it overlooks downtown SD. There is a tree over hanging the hole so it may get in your way unfortunately, same with the next hole which is a long par 3. The course isn't in the best shape but it's a nice way to spend 70 minutes for $15.

Ed was great in the beginning when I was brand new to golf. He was nice. He helped me understand…read morethe clubs. However, when I started struggling, he told me to go shoot six straight shots in a row and get back to him. Obviously, I never went back. To be honest, he still owes me lessons, but I won't go back. I've gone and played, I've tried to self teach, and then I found Stadium Golf. After my first lesson, I shot my best round. Now that's a good experience.
