I will not be playing at Steele Canyon Golf Club in Jamul again anytime soon. I have lived in the Estates near the course for more than 12 years. Last weekend, while my son was driving on Jamul Drive, a golf ball struck his vehicle and shattered the windshield. He went to the pro shop and spoke with Alan, one of the managers, hoping for some guidance or assistance. Instead, Alan offered no help, showed very little concern, and made my son feel as though the incident was somehow his fault. I understand that the course may not accept direct responsibility for every stray golf ball, but basic customer service and compassion should still matter. At the very least, Steele Canyon could have offered a few rounds of golf or some other gesture to help offset the unexpected cost of replacing the windshield. After living here and supporting the course for so many years, the complete lack of concern was extremely disappointing. From now on, we will gladly drive a little farther to play at a course that values its neighbors and customers. Been playing consistent golfer just over two years now and my buddy waited to take me to this course till I got to a certain level. I was glad he had me wait. lol. Unfortunately, our round had a lot of wind and rain, so it wasn't as enjoyable as I wanted it to be, but I loved the course and we will come back. My friend wasn't kidding when he said bring a lot of balls. There are a ton of narrow fairways, elevated tees, and multilevel greens. That said, I thought the course was well taken care of and extremely creative. To say it is a challenge for an average golfer would probably be an understatement, but if you enjoy a challenge like I do, this is a great course to prove where your game is really at. After the round, we hung out and got something to eat, and all of us were really pleased with our food and the waitress was great. I'm looking forward to going back with much better weather and hopefully much better play on my part. read more

Poor experience. Prepaid $190 for a tee time. 30min uber out into the mountains, nobody was there at bag drop, a couple guys on their phones in the cart return area doing nothing. Walked into pro shop, guys weren't over the top friendly or welcoming. Sold me a range receipt with a code but didn't give much direction, which left me wandering around with my bag looking for where to walk to. Range was packed, had to wait for a spot to hit some balls. Starter seemed overwhelmed with a big tournament that went out immediately before my tee time, but eventually got me in a cart and sent me off to the tee box 1 of Canyons course. My fault to miss the sign pointing to 2nd tee box, so I ended up teeing off on 9th - that was my fault I should have paid more attention. Eventually got through 4 holes in 60 minutes after a combined 40min standing on tee boxes and fairways, and decided to just head back and do something else with my day. Got back to cart return, nobody said a word to me, still some dudes standing around doing nothing, I called an uber and went back to hotel. $300 morning for 6holes of 1hr of golf and I was not impressed. The cart lady was super nice, apologized for the slow play, and was genuinely friendly. Also views were sick, crazy elevation changes and challenging play. Probably will not be back.. read more

This is a great place to host an event for large groups. We came in to celebrate Mother's day and had the champagne brunch, and it was packed with people. The seating area was decorated in purple and floral designs, the workers were attentive but slow in bringing us champagne we requested several times. There was an oyster and shrimp bar that we were excited about and it was really good, there was also a breakfest and meat station with very juicy but fatty roast beef, I had turkey that was really good. They also had a burrito station that I missed out on because the line was crazy long and then a small dessert table inside. As nice as the brunch was, the cost was not worth it at $65+ per person, it was very pricey for the kind of food served, we were expecting something more higher end. read more

First time playing here, and I was a bit concerned at first due to a few recent low reviews. But I have to say--I had a great experience! From the pro shop to the starter and beverage cart, everyone was friendly and helpful. It was a very hot day, but the beverage cart made plenty of rounds, which was much appreciated. The course was in solid shape for summer--very little browning on the fairways, which is impressive for this time of year. Next time I'm in town, I'll definitely be back to play again! read more

Just played Steele canyon - drove up to club drop - took clubs out of car - told my clubs wouldone be up at starters spot - had to put clubs on cart myself. When we finished there was no one to attend to our clubs or cart! - course conditions at best 2 of 5. Traps untouched- Sand crusty - played as a twosome - there were 3 twosome's and three singles out around our time - so play very slow. Club should group together so that foresomes play if at all possible. Fairways brownish and hard - almost like Ireland- but this is not links golf. Greens. Very satisfactory. To sum up - probably will not play again- worth paying a little more for better conditions and servic. read more

The course is in excellent condition, raked bunkers, nice tee boxes, consistent greens etc. the design of the course is great, just difficult enough to be fun. I played 9 here about a month ago. Course wasn't in fantastic shape but it was good. I really liked the layout since there were some fun shots from high to low. For what some courses are charging in the SD area, like Maderas where I played the day before, I enjoyed this course a lot more for the money. I will come back to play this course again when I'm in SD again -- Maderas, not so much. This was a bit of a drive from La Jolla so it's not exactly close but it's not too bad.....I think it was about 30 minutes. read more

The courses are awesome but a little more challenging than I expect which is good. Lots of blind shots and the greens were a bit fast. Really enjoyed the round. We played the ranch and vineyard with is called (meadows) on the gps. The only negative things is for $105 you would expect better carts with GPS and they didn't have that. I had not played Steele Canyon in a decade and decided to make the trek out. The course was great and we had a fun time. The starter was hilarious. All went well. I got home and realized I left my new Bushnell X3 pro in the cart. Dumb move by me. I immediately called and the pro shop said it was turned in and they would put my name and number on it to pick up. I planned to return the following week to play a round and grab the range finder. I called the day before I was heading back out and spoke to a rude employee that told me there was no X3 pro in the lost and found. When I told him that I had called and confirmed it was there, he said they have over 200 people a day come through and can't keep track of lost items. Aside from losing a $500 range finder, what really pissed me off was the attitude. I mean at least don't be a jerk about it. You had it and it disappeared. If my name and number was actually put on it, I have to think one of the employees probably stole it. Pretty lame in my opinion. Only other complaint is when we were trying to warm up they for some reason had 4 hitting bays closed. Mats just pulled off to the back. Go figure. read more

So this is not your normal review but it needs to be put out there. Today we were golfing in heat close to 100 degrees and on hole 15 my wife experienced a very elevated heart rate up near 175 bpm. I rushed her to the clubhouse and that's when the great team took over. The servers gave her everything possible to make her comfortable including ice packs, blankets to rest on, elevated her feet on a table etc. nobody had an obligation to help us yet they attended to her like she was part of their own family. Another gentleman helped us and was almost as good as a doctor. I am so very grateful to this amazing staff for the love and support given my wife. This will stay with me for quite some time Please give this establishment your business if possible and you won't be disappointed read more

Played here on a Friday with a friend. Did the Ranch and Vineyard 9 hole courses. Courses were in pretty good shape. Especially liked that the roughs were cut short. The Ranch holes were amongst the hills around the homes in the area. The Vineyard course wound through the homes and small vineyards. Pretty pricey course - $95 for weekday play. Expected GPS in the cart which it didn't have. Also no course layouts on the scorecard or in the cart. Five tee boxes so tricky sometimes to determine hitting strategy. Had lunch at the Grill / fish tacos. They were okay. Good service. read more

The California drought and this location in the East is very much on display right now. There is a lot of yellow and brown with some greenish splashed in. The FAIRWAYS have short grass so you can expect a good roll on many holes. The STAFF are friendly and polite. The MARSHALL even found one of my golf balls and tossed in an extra for good measure. It's a windy hot day and the wind did help a little in making it seem less hot. VINEYARD COURSE -- this is the winner of the three; I have hear via reviews that RANCH is the most forgettable and since we travel from far away we may skip this one whenever we visit here; nice big and custom homes visible on this course; GREENS are in pretty decent shape throughout; vineyard definitely has the best varying and fun layout; stone walkways are nice looking; today vineyard is greener than the canyon course CANYON COURSE -- looking pretty dry and yellow/brown mostly; a nice layout just not as nice as VINEYARD CARTS -- it would be nice to see them upgrade and get some NAVI on them since they really are a nicer golf course overall; free tees provided on carts; water coolers are throughout the course on this very hot day Given how far they are from us I would opt for a wet Winter play or wet early Spring next time to help ensure we get a greener experience. But truthfully in SoCal especially, maybe that "ship has sailed" with most affordable courses showing the effects of little rainfall. read more

I was looking for a course to play in the surrounding San Diego area while visiting. On Sunday morning, I opened my GolfNow app and found a HotDeal for $59 for this course, normally $112. This course has three 9 holes: Canyon, Ranch, & Vineyard. I arrived and checked in 20 mins prior to my tee time. The pro shop said I could get started early and to check in with the starter. The starter said he was ready to let me go out, except it would be Vineyard and Ranch course. Based on what I read in the reviews, the Vineyard course would be narrow with lots of houses lined along the course so I asked if could play the Canyon and Ranch instead. He said no problem but wait would be about 15 minutes. Perfect, I grabbed my bag and loaded my golf cart. He gave me a yard book for reference since I told him it was my first time at this course. This yard book came a long way for me and I couldn't believe the starter gave it to me for free! The canyon course was beautiful, every hole was scenic with lots of elevation changes. I noted that the 1st hole had a posted sign, beware of rattlesnakes. Also, at 1st hole, there are lots of range balls to the left of the fairway so avoid hitting to that side or use a colored ball so you can find yours if needed. My favorite hole on this course was the #5. It was the most impressive, with steep elevation changes and has a lookout point of pond from hole #6. This hole also has a large patch of rough from tee box so it creates quite a challenge for a long par 3. Hole 2, beware of sand bunkers (lots of them) on the left of fairway. Hole #4 has large patch of rough to get to the fairway. This was a challenging hole. Hole 8 has the green surrounded by water to the left and makes it essential to lay up before trying to land it there. I saw quite a few balls in the water below. By the time I got to the Ranch course, I felt beaten down as this was a hard course to play and I had lost quite a few balls on the par 3s. The Ranch course was a little more challenging and also nice as well. I highly recommend this course as it is very well maintained, friendly staff, great cart service that's hard to find in Los Angeles, excellent greens, and great pace of play. I finished my round in 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon! read more

Steele Canyon just got all new golf carts WITH GPS! Went and played single yesterday and was pleasantly surprised that they got all new golf carts, GPS and they even show the contours of the greens! Met Tim the Marshall on the course and he is an AWESOME person! Starter was great too. Then BIG shout out to Evan who saw my cart was dying and brought me another one. BIGGER shout out to Brian. I left my freaking wallet in the cart! Got over 40 minutes back towards home. Called in and he returned it to the pro shop WITH my credit cards and cash still in tact. They have three 9 holes here and all 3 are awesome and challenging. Prices have gone up over the past few years, but so has everything else. THANK YOU to everyone there. One of the best golf rounds I have had in a long time. And I shot a crappy 98 and still had a great time! read more

Where the heck is Jamul? It's located in NE San Diego and has a population of less then 10,000 I checked out this golf course on-line and bid for a Saturday am tee time. I was successful at a large discounted rate from the regular weekend rate of $139.00 per non resident rate . Steele Canyon was designed in the 60's by Gary Player and has three 9 holes courses. I played the Canyon (located inside a large canyon) and Ranch (Plays around a operating ranch) courses which were scenic as well as challenging. There was plenty of elevation changes, lots of uneven lies, elevated greens and overall is well maintained. In addition to the golf course you'll find a fully stocked pro shop, restaurant and even a large room for Wedding receptions and banquets. Service here was efficient with people inside the pro shop and the starter even let me tee off early. I'd recommend Steele Canyon Golf Club for a round golf or for your special occasion. read more

What a sad state of affairs this course has become. I have been playing Steele Canyon for 20+ and have not seen the course in worse shape than it is now (June 2020). The driving range hasn't changed ever, other than the grass getting more brown. Range balls and buckets are old and damaged. Those that have played Steele know that the course is challenging, but a fun layout. The Canyon and Ranch courses meander through the hills of Jamul, which is a great setting for golf. The Vineyard course, which used to be called Meadow, winds it's way through the gated neighborhood and now has grapes growing along various holes on the course (still not sure what the point of this is). Years back the golf course eliminated some grass areas in favor of more drought tolerant landscaping and mulch. When initially installed the landscaping added a nice element to the course. Seeing it now, you don't get that feeling. It's obvious that the landscaping on the golf course is not tended to often, other than maybe the occasional irrigation it recieves. The grass on the course was dry and sandy. The greens were well kempt, but the tee boxes and fairways were awful. Tee boxes were rock hard and uneven. Fairways varied from a nice patch here and there, to just hitting off of what looked like dry straw. Water features around the course are hit and miss right now. Ponds/ lakes are mostly half empty. There is a nice area along Vineyard 5 that is always flowing, but not reflective of other water elements out on the course. The golf carts seem out of date compared to other courses around the county, although they are always clean. Beverage service on the course was practically non-existent. We were on the course for 5 hours and saw the beverage cart once. Someone might ask, "Why are you nitpicking the course like this?" Glad you asked. Paying $95 for a round of golf isn't the most expensive round in the county and definitely not the cheapest. However, at that rate there are multiple other courses that present much better value. Heck, there are nicer courses that are less expensive. Steele is supposed to be semi-private, but I can't tell what all of that membership money goes towards. I could barely tell what my money went towards, other than an elitist approach to golf that this course has had since it was built and is still holding on to. What I want to see is Steele Canyon be more inviting, more friendly, and kept in better shape.... or reduce the price to play. read more

Beautiful golf course , and the staff providing refreshments were very friendly and made for a nice morning . Unfortunately, clubhouse staff (older woman) we encountered was extremely rude . Being our first time I wasn't familiar with all the policies and instead of explaining it to us , staff was demeaning, very matter of fact and unpleasant which left a bad taste in my mouth. Beautiful golf course and grounds. The service in the club house was horrible. We sat in the bar area for 10-15 minutes without being acknowledged. A couple guys walked in and were approached immediately. When we got up to leave the blonde waitress/bar tender stated they had been waiting, they were having computer issues and would be with us in a few minutes. As we proceeded to the door she got increasingly angry and made a comment "or you can go somewhere else" followed by cuz words. In the service industry all the customer needs is communication "I will be right with you" "thank you for your patience" goes a long way. Unfortunately the waitress/bar tender should not be the face of this amazing golf course. The level of service she provides is lacking and not a good representation of your establishment read more

Have your event at Steele Canyon Golf Club! Our daughter and son-in-law were married at Steele Canyon Golf Club on 11/2/19. Barry Rice offered the guidance and support to make our event superlative. Barry and everyone on his staff are friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and accommodating. The communication was without comparison. Emails and phone calls were answered promptly, and in-person visits were arranged as needed. We attended Open Houses throughout the planning process to taste appetizers and entrée selections and that allowed us to see the pavilion (reception area) decorated and set up with tables. Different vendors were on hand each time to show us what they offer. Additionally, Barry gave us a list of vendors who work at Steele Canyon frequently and we met them all and selected people from that list. There are different packages available to meet the needs of any party. We chose the Canyon package and were overjoyed by all that was included in the surprisingly low per person price (appetizers, the meal, wine at dinner, champagne toast, centerpieces, invitations, 1 hour hosted bar, wedding cake, DJ and more for our 158 guests). There were plenty of options for individualizing our event. We had both the ceremony and reception at Steele Canyon and we were pleased with the free, ample parking, a rarity at venues in San Diego County. Many of our guests were locals who had not been to Steele Canyon Golf Club and were charmed by this hidden gem in their midst. We also had guests from 12 other states and from Mexico who were enchanted by the surroundings. I really can't be sure that Barry and his staff get credit for the glorious weather we had that day, but then again, who knows? read more

This is a fabulous and beautiful course that I was lucky enough to play last time I was visiting family in San Diego. The course played real fast was in great shape and had so many beautiful shots to take. One of the holes was a shot off a cliff onto the fairway hundreds of yards below. It was so cool to watch the ball sit up there forever! I also asked my future father in law if I could marry his daughter here and he said yes, so ill always remember it for that ;) read more

This review is WAY overdue but unfortunately I've been missing out on the greatness that is Yelp and basically just recently started reviewing places. My husband and I chose this venue for our wedding nearly 3 years ago. WE LOVED EVERYTHING. We went to several venues (hotels, wineries, parks, waterfront, etc) but decided to take a chance on this quaint place which, at the time, was trying to boost their popularity within the wedding business. They were so accommodating, and we were able to do full tastings on the entrees we were thinking of choosing (don't know if they still do that). We were married in an early Saturday afternoon in mid August. Although it was hot weather, there is a constant breeze through the valley that cooled things off a bit. We did have parasols and handfans however to help with the heat. Our vendors raved about the ease of the venue and the setting was just beautiful. The sun sets beautifully in the backdrop of the valley. The grass was green, not a brown shrub in site, and their white chairs were nice and not scuffed or blemished. We were able to have flowers and petals strewn about the ground (so as long as they're cleaned up; our vendors did that). You can have open bar if you choose. We were given the option of having a keg as well. Parking is free which is awesome and right next to the Pavilion. The food was great, we had Halibut with prime rib and the poppyseed salad was so Yum. The sides are great and every single person there kept bringing up how good the food was and asking if they can buy a plate to take home LOL. You can opt to have tray service (a waiter taking around hor'deurves of your choice. ). They brew Cafe Moto which is also great. You also get a free round of golf to redeem. I love this place.
