Inconsistent. Last time was too salty (and I love salt!) and spicy when asked for mild but when it's good, it's great! Also, this place has a real issue with time: The one occasion we dined there we sat at the table for over an hour after ordering, waiting. All the while Uber eats etc drivers were gathering and standing, hovering in the dining area waiting too with some were getting downright uncouth. Not a pleasant experience. I can understand why some restaurants won't deal with these drivers at all. At least the employees maintained decorum. My tip: order and pickup but wait a half hour longer than they tell you. We were first timers recently but certainly not last timers. Heads up, there is parking in the back and even an entrance in the back. The door in the back is just a solid white door with no glass or any way to see in but trust me it takes you into the restaurant For apps we had the pakora basket. It came with a samosa and beetroot tikki as well. The samosa was great and the beetroot tikki had promise but was a little free with the fennel seeds. The spinach pakora - please just offer me this by the basketful! The rest of the pakora (caulflower, onion and potato) were good but after a few we had our share of besan. Also to start was the lasooni gobhi 65. Our son is selectively spice-averse so we asked for the sauce on the side. The cauliflower was fried in what seemed like a thinner besan (chickpea) batter and was red. While it was piping hot, I did not find it too crispy and the sauce in the bowl on the side lacked that garlic oomph. No worries at least the kid loved it. The Paneer Tikka was next. This is where the flavor resides! One of the best paneer tikkas we have had. Edges slightly crisp and flavor still intact with a soft paneer. No cheating with the torch like some restaurants do. Star of the night. Vegetable Jalfrezi - Packed with fresh veggies, savory flavor and not cut with potatoes. This is was blanketed with the tandoori roti we ordered. We will be back, and next time I am heading straight to the same mains we ordered. The food comes out hot and fast, so be ready! read more

Came here first time in years for the buffet. Tasted several dishes and everything was good. My favorite were the veggie dishes (mushroom and chickpeas). There were also several chicken dishes that were good as well. They charge 18 for adults and 16 for children. I came with an 8 & 10 year old that eat mostly rice and naan so the restaurant buffet is overpriced for little kids without much of a palate. Let me start of with the end: they brought the credit card processor to the table - for us to take care of the bill. Our credit card never left the table. So amazing, so worldly, so safe. This is how checks should be paid. Thank you for having this system. Since under new ownership, the place is now charming, clean, the food is delicious, and the owner is so nice and accommodating. We visited during Berkeley Heights Restaurant Week, and our specials were phenomenal. It was a trial platter of two veg and one meat sauce, naan, rice, chicken masala, and dessert. The butter chicken ($17) was rich and delicious with tender boneless chicken. The naan was good and a bit thin rather than puffy. The chicken tikka ($18) was very marinated and more of a dry rub but good. There were 7 pieces on a bed of grilled vegetables, so it was good value. The aloo gobi ($14) was yummy and on the sweeter side. It had more potato than cauliflower. The service was really slow because there was only 1 person waiting on the entire restaurant. They really need to hire a second waiter. The food is very good, although not quite as good as originally. Excellent food and poor service, so I'd return for the lunch buffet when we can serve ourselves. read more

Strange reminder that being a semi-regular has its limits here. I noticed a distinct change when I stopped by ordering less food meaning less money. But even more disturbing was this evening. At first, I went to sit at a table with the entire place empty except for two people. Then the head guy practically ran over really irritated and aggravated, telling me "not there!", then offering the tables next to the Special Table. There was nothing on the table marking it reserved. So I wasn't scared for life but clearly I was an inconvenient stranger. So ii order four samosas and apologetically explain I would be leaving soon. This didn't eradicate his scowl. So next thing is the samosas. Usual find, these were half cooked. Peas inside were ice marbles. The dough was near raw in places. So I waved him over and had him box them up so I could leave early as I wasn't particularly wanted and it was becoming increasingly obvious why. So as I paid for the cold food I heard no apologies, no attempt to make it right. It's a pity. I've had some pleasant evenings chatting a bit with the wait staff. But once I ordered less, that changed. And tonight it was painfully evident just why I wasn't wanted - what a pity I'm not in their chosen demographic. As I left, I mock apologized for not sitting in the right place. The guy with the attitude didn't break character as the perturbed proprietor. He couldn't be bothered responding and was relieved to see me leave. I assured him I'd never make that mistake again. And I won't. read more

A simple twist of fate led us to the front door of Neelam Indian Cuisine in Berkeley Hts. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Kunal Sharma, who is the nephew of the Original owners of Neelam. His uncle sold the place to the previous owners untill Kunal left corporate America to buy back Neelam to continue the legacy that his uncle started in 1984. Upon entering you are greeted with the intoxicating aroma of exotic spices as well as a heartfelt Hello from Kunal and his staff, some of whom, I assume, are family. We dove into the menu and ordered our goto dishes which were: Meat (lamb) Samosas - delightfully flaky and filled with ground lamb, peas and warm spices served with a tamarind dipping sauce. Chicken Tikka Masala - despite it's Scottish origin by an Indian Chef, Chicken Tikka Masala has become the General Tso's Chicken of Indian Cuisine. It's on every Indian menu in the US because its delicious and embodies everything you expect from Indian cuisine. Neelam's rendition is excellent and notably savory without the inappropriate sweetness I've experienced from other Indian restaurants. Lamb Vindaloo - my personal favorite! Tender pieces of lamb in a fiery tomato based gravy with Potatoes. This was as good a Vindaloo as I've ever had, again, due in part to the lack of sweetness that I find unappealing from other places. We also had 2 different Naan, served piping hot from the tandoor oven - one plain and one Garlic Chili. A wonderful vessel to scoop up the delicious gravies of the chicken and lamb. Their lunch special was satisfying because they had rice, chicken, bread, tofu, and different sauces with vegetables in them. The bread that Indians serve is delicious and was very warm when they gave it to us. The chicken was delicious and the sauces blended well with the bread and rice. I have gotten takeout from Neelam several times and have always enjoyed it. For my most recent experience, I ordered the Vegetable Jalfrezi, which contained a variety of fresh vegetables, such as carrots, cauliflower, peas, and more. The sauce had an ideal amount of spice and was not too heavy. The Peshwari Naan was some of the best I have ever had; it was fluffy and packed with thinly shredded coconut, making it a terrific sweet counter to the heat of the Jalfrezi. I would say, however, that the promised nuts and raisins were largely missing from the bread, though the coconut did fine on its own. In the past, I had also tried the restaurant's Baingan Bhurtha, which contained roasted eggplant that had been sautéed with green peas, ginger, and garlic in a Punjabi-style, tomato-based sauce. It was another great dish. Neelam offers a traditional and expansive Northern Indian menu, executed in a delicious and low grease manner. read more

Naan was cold and stale, basically a cracker. Some of the vegetables were basically uncooked. I ordered my food to be a medium spice level and it had so much pepper that it was inedible. I've tried this restaurant the first time 20 years ago and haven't gone again until new ownership. Wow, what a change!!! The food is amazing. I used to say Karma Kafe in Hoboken was my favorite. Those days are long gone. Neelam is significantly better that I've gotten food from them 5 times in the last several weeks. It's so good I started ordering things I've never heard of before because I have full trust in them. Boy did I get what I was hoping for. Eye opening experiences. Highlights have been in no order: -Peshawri Naan -Aloo Papri Chaat: Super addictive -Reshmi kebab: Move over chicken tika -Seekh kebab: Really good as well -Bhindi Gosht: It's amazing and I hate okra. Never had an okra dish like this before. My guess is that they roast the okra before using it for the curry. -Baingan Bhurtha: A new favorite way to eat eggplant -Navratan Korma: Very flavorful -Keema Punjabi Masala: Very spicy but not nearly as spicy as lamb vindaloo. More of a spicy gochujang spice level. Very good -Chicken biryani: proteins from other places are always dry. Not here. Love it. I also ask them to make it authentically spicy so I get the full experience but I'd advise against doing that if you can't handle a lot of heat. Again, completely new restaurant from new ownership so completely ignore all reviews prior to March 2021. One of the top 3 best restaurants in this area. Ordering again today.
