First time and loved it. My wife and I are fond of Indian cuisine; we're always looking for an info Pakistani restaurant to eat. Today, my wife took us to Sonny's restaurant and it was well with the 35 minute drive. I ordered the clay baked chicken and she ordered some spicy chicken dish. They were both finger licking good. I had to file a Complaint with the Better Business Bureau to finally get Sonny's to refund the $77.88 he had falsely misrepresented in a post here on Yelp he had refunded from April 11, 2026 dinner. So he falsely posted on Yelp he had refunded me. So what, huh? So I had to get the Better Business Bureau involved. Who cares, right? Now that they forced him to pay, I care less. But I had gone here hoping all the hype about the nice guy host true. However, personally seeing him repeatedly screaming at his staff was the stake through heart of the self-promoted image of the nicest restaurant host. Apparently an act. Everyone has a rough day time to time, tempers flare for us all: we are human. But from the repeated tirades I witnessed well within view and earshot of other patrons on April 11, 2026, I do not believe the outbursts were isolated incidents. So if you ever go, if you see something, post something. Never in a lifetime of patronizing peaceful pleasant Indian eateries have I ever seen such abusive treatment of staff. Opened in in 2020 right in the middle of the pandemic. The spot quickly earned recognition as one of the best Indian restaurants in NJ. We ordered takeout and everything was so fresh and delicious. It feels like everything was made with love. The owner Sonny really is a local legend around here, super involved and known for his warm hospitality that makes the whole experience feel special. This place was SO good. Sonny, the owner, is super friendly and made an effort to learn our names and referred to us by name throughout our time there. I could tell he develops great relationships with his customers because 2 other families sat down shortly after we walked in and it was clear that they were repeat customers and Sonny knew who they were. He took the time to explain to us the difference between butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. We ended up getting the butter chicken since it is recommended as one of his restaurant's specialities. We also got the mango coconut shrimp, which was so delicious. We loved the sauce so much. We got the mango coconut as an appetizer but I saw that it is also an entree, and would definitely get it as an entree. If I lived closer to this restaurant, I would definitely go all the time. Even though I don't live too close to the restaurant, I'll always try to stop by if I'm ever nearby in the future. The interior is also cutely decorated and looks so homey. Sonny makes you feel like family. First time I went there with my BIL and while we were waiting for our take-out order, Sonny personally came over and conversed with us (even though it was busy). Honestly that was a nice start to a wonderful relationship. Over time we stopped in a few times. Their food is very delicious (I am not an expert on Indian food but in my opinion it's good). We've ordered the butter chicken, korma and tikka masala. All worth the heat (even with baby mild)! Wife loves their Papdi Chat. Everyone loves their Naan - I mean who doesn't!?! Overall I would recommend this place as their food is consistent and the staff is friendly. What a gem! From the time we were greeted to time we left everything was just amazing experience. This is a small cozy restaurant with amazing, warm and joyful owner Sonny. The ambiance was charming and cozy, and we were made to feel welcome right away. Maybe being with a couple of locals made a difference, but I suspect they are very nice to everyone. I have been missing out on this local Indian place. What a gem! Arrived on a Sunday night after a movie. No reservation, no problem. Figured it would be super quiet during the Xmas holiday week but there was a nice crowd, very local and clearly several regular patrons. I suspect that on a Friday or Saturday, a Resy is a must as the space is small and it's obvious how busy the place can get. The staff made us newbies feel like we had been going there for a while. Sonny, the owner, was so warm. The menu is expansive and really nicely geared for people like me who can't have gluten. Sonny took our order and helped space out the dishes to give us ample time to enjoy our meal. To start, we had the baygan Bhurtha (baked eggplant) and the Bindi masala with some rice and garlic and chili naan (for hubby) which were all delish. The bindi was really nice texturally. And both dishes were super flavorful without being drenched in butter or ghee. Did I mention how much I loved the okra? We then shared the spicy shrimp vindaloo and the sweet potato with chickpea curry. And yes, the shrimp vindaloo has a lot of heat! I am sure they would moderate it if asked. But it was really tasty. They kindly wrapped our leftovers and we had ample as the portions are really big. No room for dessert but would definitely get the date and fig kulfi ice cream next time. We love Indian food and just adored this tiny spot on the Main Street in Chatham. Look forward to returning soon. I also imagine that it would be a great takeout option. We gave Sonnys a try for the first time last night, ordering takeout. We have not had Indian food yet in the area and Sonnys had great reviews and we saw it mentioned in a few local groups. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, garlic naan, chicken tandoori, and vegetable korma. While the food was tasty and we enjoyed the flavors, the portions were on the smaller side for the price. Ordering online, the chicken tikka masala is $21 which seems quite expensive for what seemed to be a large chicken breast in sauce. The reason for the 2 stars however is because the chicken tandoori was raw. Raw chicken is a no-go and can't happen. Unsure if we will come back. Mistakes do happen, so perhaps we will give another try sometime in the future, but we may try other options in the area. read more

I may have left a review for this place already, but I'm back after recently trying 2 other Indian restaurants in the area that just don't compare. Sonny's is 10/10. It's where I want to go for a special occasion or a random Tuesday night. The atmosphere is cozy, the staff are friendly, and it's one of the few restaurants remaining that really knows how to make each guest feel special. A while ago I had to go temporarily dairy free for medical reasons and Sonny was so accommodating- even calling me to explain what was safe or could be modified and on the menu. I felt totally at ease. The korma is the most crave worthy comfort dish, and anything chef recommends ends up being perfect. We love this place! read more

Was in the mood for Indian takeout in the area. I will say it's possible I didn't choose the right dish, as there are a ton of options on this extensive menu. I got the malai-kofta as it sounded super interesting. I liked the texture with the nuts and raisins, as this was pretty interesting for this cuisine. But the dumplings themselves were just fine. What bothered me a bit more was that there were only two dumplings. We also got the garlic basil naan. While not the thickest naan I've had, I still really enjoyed the portion. The takeout staff were super friendly and accommodating when we asked for things to be separated, which I appreciated. In the end, I do think this place is probably a great choice and I just need to try something else next time. read more

We had: - Chicken tikka masala ($16) - Goat curry ($16) - Butter chicken ($15) which came with: - Samosa - Naan - Basmati rice - Gulab jamun The butter chicken was fantastic! Ultra rich, thick sauce and incredibly tender chicken. The chicken tikka masala had a great rich sauce, but the chicken was a bit dry. The goat curry was thinner and less flavorful and exciting, but I enjoyed the novelty of eating goat. Still a good dish. The samosa was very good. It was crisp and fresh on the outside. The naan was puffy and thick, but I wish it was a little crisper rather than chewy. The gulab jamun was perfectly sweet and dense. The rice was fine but could've used more saffron. The host even threw in extra rice to go for free! The portions were small of each, but it was an ample feast given the number of courses. We were the only ones in the restaurant on a Saturday for lunch at 12:30 PM. The host was very friendly and chatty. The restaurant was decorated very nicely for Diwali. Had no intentions of eating dinner here but walked past and my nose just had a mind of its own. It's a really cozy little restaurant where the owner greets every table and introduces himself. Super friendly! He recommended the butter chicken signature dish and boy did that not disappoint! I also got the mango shrimp appetizer and that was phenomenal. We had been craving phoori bread & bummed they didn't have it, out the garlic naan was really yummy & comforting. Then onto a mixed (mostly fried) meat wasn't a fan of the lamb sausage or chicken tandoori- I can be a bit sensitive to spice. But the owner was so great - he brought my husband & I a free special appetizer platter. I really enjoyed it overall. The manager/owner was there & he was such a kind gentleman. Went here for dinner one night without a reservation and waited about 25minutes for a table which wasn't too bad considering it was a small place and packed! Very cozy interior with the tables pretty close together. There was only one host waiting on all the tables so it took a while for him to take our order but he was very personable. Unfortunately our food took over an hour to come out which wasn't great but the taste was amazing! Everyone at my table enjoyed all of our choices and it was so fresh and flavorful. Walked in on a Sunday late afternoon and got seated immediately, a courteous gentleman came by and asked if it was our first time and then introduced himself as Sonny. I had read the other reviews briefly before coming so I knew Sonny was the owner and everyone was right, what a guy! He provided some recommendations that we happily took and ordered goat curry and butter chicken. We also started with the keema samosas and were STUFFED but still took home an order of gulab jamun, of course. They were still warm by the time I got home and since the ride back was so long (hour away) I had built up a nice appetite for them. We ordered Gobi Manchurian and Butter Paneer Masala. Gobi Manchurian was super salty and the cauliflower was not even cooked fully! Butter paneer masala was below average. We ordered the mango shrimp appetizer, samosas, butter chicken & a side of garlic naan. Mango lassi and ginger chai for drinks. I asked for brown sugar for my ginger chai which they didn't have but Sonny went out of his way to get them for me from another store. Exceptional service! Mango shrimp 9/10: shrimp was fresh and firm. Sauce was so good! Missing a bit of depth but honestly still really good and would reorder! Samosas 10/10: initially we ordered the chicken samosas but we were given the vegetarian ones but honestly it was so good that we didn't even mind it. Sonny came over and personally apologized for the mistake. The vegetarian samosas were served on a bed of chickpeas in a kind of sauce and it was *chefs kiss*. Definitely would recommend! Butter chicken 10/10: I've only had butter chicken twice and this is honestly the best. It's flavorful (not salty) and the chicken is so buttery (soft and juicy). Garlic naan 8/10: a bit too soft but was still really good and garlicky; I prefer my naan a bit more crisp. If you like naan on the softer side, it would be perfect for you. Nonetheless, it's still so good for dipping in the butter chicken. Overall, Sonny's kitchen is 5 and a 10/10 would highly recommend.
