Update: Not sure what is going on here, but there must be a different chef. I even tried contacting Pooja, but got no response. Don't get me wrong, the food is good but it's changed. For example, the chicken tikka was my favorite (not the masala). It would come with thick-sliced onions, a favorite of mine, and a lemon slice. Perfect. Now the chicken tikka comes with more shredded cabbage than onions. The onions are so thinly sliced you can barely tell them from the cabbage. One time, I actually got some cucumbers and carrots in my meal. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the additions they put into the tikka. Cabbage, yuk! Onions, YUM. read more

Warren Location: Beautiful looking place. Service was good. Food was very disappointing. Roti was burnt and tasteless and looked undesirable. Lentil soup was thin, watery and tasteless, like they just added hot water to stretch the little they had back there. We had an appetizer platter for two and everything was tasteless or burnt and seemed to be not fresh. They also charge extra on the bill for using my credit card! Hmm! This is most unfortunate because I was hoping this would be a place I would frequent often because it is close by and I love Indian food. Terrible food and unapologetic staff! We rarely takeout Indian food as we prefer to dine in or cook at home. The one Friday night we decide to eat in and we were so disappointed. Chicken 65 was clearly anything but that- chicken in tomatoey sauce with a wannabe chili chicken flavor?? Moving onto the Biryani which would have been the saving Grace but not really- mutton added to an overly spiced rice with the raw taste of masalas. This was my first check in, but I have been going to Pooja for years with coworkers for various events with groups of all sizes! The quality has never faltered over the years. Even had a coworker mention that she had them cater her now 18 year old daughter's first birthday. We always order family style, although it's individual portions. This allows you to taste all kinds of deliciousness. Our goto is usually vegetarian - paneer pakora is my favorite appetizer and veg korma for dinner. I've eaten at Pooja numerous times for lunch and the lunch buffet was always very good. I went for dinner about a week ago. The lighting was so dim I had to take my phone out to even be able to read the menu. I wanted additional sauce (the size of the portion vthe tray of tandoori veggies was minuscule) and ended up being charge the full price of the meal for an additional tray of sauce that was what should have been served in the first place. REALLY??? The veggies were tasty but 2X the cost of the meal to get some additional sauce??? I'll never patronize them for dinner again and will have to think twice about going back at all. read more

Like many Indian restaurants I have attended, this one was also empty when I arrived. That usually sparks a red light to most people, but what those people don't realize is that a lot of people either eat fast food, at an American restaurant, or at home. The place was as clean as most places, but had a great length. A recommendation would be to order the mango lassi, a creamy yogurt like drink with the flavor of mango. I also ordered the meat samosa, like an empanada, but 100 times better. Although my senses told me the chefs may have just defrosted this meat delicacy, I continued eating. Another recommendation would be to order the aloo paratha, a potato filled roti, with any of your dishes. The potatoes were well cooked, and the texture of the bread was smooth and crisp. I ordered butter chicken with my paratha, which is a fan favorite for those who like a little sensation of spice. If you want an extremely spicy dish, get the vindaloo. Oh, by the way if you are not from NJ, you'll be happy to know sales tax is 2% lower than NY sales tax. The only thing that may keep some from entering a restaurant in NJ, is that most places don't carry alcohol, because of its outrageous price. Pull into this unassuming strip mall and you'll find this unassuming little Indian restaurant. Pooja is a wonderful restaurant for many reasons. Of course, the first reason is the food. Pooja prepares foods very fresh. They always ask the level of spice you want. They get the right taste on everything they bring out. Their naan breads are great (I ask for them to skip the butter glaze). Their tandoori chicken comes out sizzling, fresh, and delicious (so many other restaurants pre-cook that). Their veggie pakora is light and crunchy with mild spice, perfect with the dipping sauces. Sag Paneer is great, their creamy curries with lamb/chicken are sublime, I could go on and on. The service at Pooja is very classy. They are always polite and kind. The food doesn't come out super quick, but I attribute that to the quality and freshness. Pooja is a BYOB which will save you some good money. Speaking of saving, they do from time to time mail out coupons, but to be honest, this restaurant is so moderately priced that I actually feel funny pulling out a coupon. Living in Hudson County, my best option for Indian food is Newark Avenue in Jersey City. Poojah is better than any of those, and I would say worth the 40 minute drive to have a wonderful Indian dinner. read more

My review at pooja is solely based on the lunch buffet and not on the a la carte experience. Once we entered the restaurant we were greeted at the door. The place was buzzing with people during peak lunch hours. They quicky arranged the table for four of us. Well the lunch buffet menu was very nicely laid out. I tried the pakoras(vegetable deep fried with flour) with chutney(suace), it was really good. Staff made sure that they kept refilling the food items. I tried the baigan bharta(eggplant) ,chicken tikka and lamb masala for the main course. My taste buds rate the food good but not exceptional, it lacked flavour, specially the chicken tikka. Yum! We came here for dinner and ordered the chicken makhani (chicken in a buttery tomato sauce) and the tandoor combination platter. To start, they brought out complimentary pappadam (flat crispy cracker-like bread) with green sauce and spicy onion chutney. That was really tasty. The main courses were great, too. I asked for mild and it was truly served mild, but not lacking any flavor. We got plain naan(with the combo) and one of the breads filled with chicken. Both were served piping hot, fresh, and delicious. The tandoor combo could have used a touch more onion to make the meat more moist, but otherwise was delicious, and included chicken, shrimp, green-sauce-covered-limey-chicken, minced meat kabobs, and chicken on the bone, as well as a vegetable korma side dish. It was filling. Service was attentive, friendly, and glasses were kept filled. Last they brought out a complimentary dessert of kheer (rice pudding) which was a really nice touch and tasty. Worst experience. Was forced to go there as Aroma which is about just a mile from this place was packed and had a 1 hour wait at 12:30 in the afternoon. The buffet was pathetic.
