Heard about Neil's from a co-worker. We had been searching for a family donut shop for awhile, because those donuts are usually better than Dunkin. And Neil's did not disappoint! We were able to order right after walking in, even though it was packed- everyone is so quick! We got assorted donuts and a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel. Fourteen b/e/c bagels were called out before ours came out! That is ONE popular dish! And there's no doubt why...it was the BEST b/e/c bagel that I've ever had! Wonderful! Our donuts were great, not the best I've ever had, but enjoyable none the least. And our coffee's (iced and hot) were perfect! A great experience overall. We will definitely be returning! read more

The donuts are good, but the out-of-this-world donut experience that others describe having hasn't really occurred for me, and I've tried at least six varieties. I credit them for having many flavors, but some just aren't executed as well as they could be (e.g., the strawberry cream in the strawberry coconut donut isn't all that flavorful, the blueberry crumb donut isn't a match for that of a competitor in Hamden). I do like their cinnamon donuts, though, and I can't say that any of the donuts I've had have been bad. The staff are friendly, and the prices are right. But the problematic parking others have described, the experience of waiting in line in a really cramped and noisy setting, and the very limited seating are downsides. Obviously, most of these issues arise because they are popular, but nonetheless they are factors in the overall experience. Of course, some people enjoy sacrificing comfort to be in a popular place; if that's you, be sure to go early! I would also add that the quality of their coffee's not very high, which really can't be helped by the various flavor syrup additions that they offer. I know that coffee in donut shops is usually not the focal point, and it may even be expected to not be very good, but other donut shops that are popping up lately are taking the coffee side more seriously and getting it right... Putting all of the elements of the experience together, my feeling about this place is tepid. But based on other reviews, you might like it a lot more! read more

The choices are impossible to memorize; "We got your plain crullers, glazed crullers,cinnamon, chocolate iced, chocolate glazed donuts....But wait there's more....Boston creme,jelly sticks, jelly donuts in a blizzard of confectioners sugar muffins of corn, blueberry , chocolate and on and on and on.... The common denominator? Dough with a down soft initial bite, then more perfection, and fillings that are fresh, not overly sweet like those from the orange graphic donut degrader. Take a glazed donut as a subject:Glistening Imperfect circle, baked to a dark tan, and a crunchy covering of translucent sugar, like a window to wonderful. Forget artificial sweeteners, sugar free baked goods, apologetic mini donuts and the rest of the ingredients your grandmother would have dumped down the sink. This is real, like American food used to be....Go on Sunday morning, you'll join the line extending into the parking lot, but you can watch the bags in arms customers pull one free of the bag and bite down as they drive away. read more

Donuts are very fresh, staff is fast, efficient and friendly. But donuts are very sweet, and nothing over the top as far as special to me. If you get to Shop Rite first thing in the morning when the donuts are fresh they are just as good if not better. I used to bring shop rite donuts to work every Friday and everyone in the office thought they were Neil's, and used to rave about how great they were. Best donuts in the world. I've eaten in many states and can't explain the softness, deliciousness of every donut. Oreo, glazed sprinkle which I have ever seen before = amazing. Side note- breakfast sandwiches here are fire. They must make the bagels in the back too. The other great thing about this place is that at 11:45 they were still making Donuts! They don't advertise it, but a lot of their donuts are "accidentally" vegan. I've been vegan for going on 8 years and there is NOWHERE in Connecticut that sells vegan donuts as good as here. They're also huge, and cheap (less than $2 each I think I remember paying). It's been busy every time I've gone in but the staff keeps the line moving and gets you in and out fast.
