I haven't lived in Connecticut for over 10 years at this point, but one thing I very much miss is Neil's Donuts. I used to frequent the Wallingford location many years ago, so when I found out they opened a location in Middletown, I just had to go. My wife and I stopped here yesterday morning (a Wednesday) and got in and out super quickly. I kept it simple and ordered a glaze donut as well as a chocolate sprinkles donut and boy oh boy, I think Neil's has one of the best chocolate sprinkles donuts I've ever had. The top of the donut was completely covered and the dough on both donuts were so soft and delicious. Overall, Neil's Donuts is a dang gem and one of the best things Connecticut has to offer and such a great place. It looks like a cozy little donut shop, the staff have always been super friendly whenever I was here, and the food here it top notch and dang good. If you want a donut, this is the place you are gonna need to come check out. read more

Usually love this place.... However, I went this morning in a rush on the way to work. I put in an Uber Eats order and stated multiple times "no cheese" as I'm allergic. When given my item, the receipt even said no cheese and somebody signed off on it How about when I went to eat my sandwich there was cheese and I hadn't throw it out (i always check first just incase) because some of it had melted to the bagel This is not right as this could have been harmful for my health. Stopped by Neil's Donuts in Middletown for breakfast after their morning rush on a week day. I was looking forward to an egg and cheese on a bagel, luckily they had a few bagels left. I also ordered an iced coffee, a blueberry cake donut (my favorite), and a classic glaze donut for my husband. It's a huge debate if Neil's has the best donuts in Connecticut. I personally only like the blueberry cake donut so I'll leave it at that. This location is modernized compared to its original location in Wallingford. It's super clean and has an organized queue because they get very busy in the morning. There are a few seats inside and outside, but most grab and go. Since I wasn't in a hurry, I enjoyed my egg and cheese sandwich while it was still warm in side. It was very delicious and the bagel was perfectly toasted. The iced coffee was much needed and it was alright. I love finding an excuse to visit this Neil's location as I enjoy it more than Wallingford. read more

The fact that the donuts were on their side made them get smooshed and the frosting fall off. The only ones that stood out to us were the blueberry crumb and glazed. Neil's Donuts always has fantastic customer service no matter how busy they get and I love their coffee. There's no denying their donuts are very good, and leaps and bounds above places like Dunkin' Donuts in size, frshhness and taste. My sons especially like their sandwiches whether it's on a croissant, bagel for a roll. Their sandwiches are always delicious and not at all fake tasting like most drive through breakfasts. I have repeatedly asked for a dark toasted bagel over the course of a year, in the hopes that one of the ridiculously large number of people who "work" here might actually just toast it slightly. Toasted means toasted not warmed. If you get a toasted bagel with cream cheese at $4.83 it is never toasted. And I mean never, it barely as if someone has cut it in half and breathed on it twice to warm it before putting it in the bag, oddly this process near always takes mins. If you aren't going toast it at all and have not intention of doing so then just give me my overpriced bread like bagel and be quick about it. 1/3 of the staff at this place need to be quickly and immediately removed as they do nothing and just mill about. Where is the management here? Also that is not how a chocolate donut or any donut is supposed to taste, they are pretty awful and disintegrate in the mouth in an unpleasant way and then leave a dry film in the mouth for mins that won't go away. When you open a new location of a business the goal should be to improve or stay the same and not reduce in quality and customer service. The shear quantity of favorable reviews on this location lead me to believe a large portion of them are fake or generated by the owner, their friends and family or local university students who wouldn't know what they are talking about to begin with. Very disappointing and I'd love to have some of my money back or replacement bagels, I've bought them about twice a week for a year, so do the math. read more

Let me start by saying that my family and I visit this location often and normally I have no issue with service or food. This past Saturday just after noon we pulled into drive thru and was shockingly the only vehicle in line. Female on speaker asked for our order. I gave our order. Oreo donut. Black coffee medium. BEC sandwich on poppy bagel. SEC sandwich on an everything. I pulled up and waited for over 10 minutes while multiple cars pulled in behind me. The young lady at the window apologized after about 5 minutes saying there might be a wait. I answered, "no problem", and kept waiting. I watched thru the window as no one cooked sandwiches. There were people moving around apparently cleaning. I saw one male person carry a bag of food towards back of store. Another tall male was pretending to play basketball. After about 10-12 minutes the girl at window apologized again for the wait. Just afterwards I saw a young male walk slowly over to the grill and start cracking some eggs. He looked over and smiled and waved, clearly mocking the fact that we've been waiting for him apparently. I was relieved that someone was finally making our food that I've already paid for. He continued to wave and smile foolishly while he cooked. Eventually we received our order and we left. One of my sons pointed out that his BEC was a SEC. My SEC was a BEC (The difference was the bagel). There was raw egg all over the inside of the bag which was ripped. I've never received an order like this so I'm certain it was intentional. Normally I would assume that a mistake was made, but with the cooks ridiculous smiling and waving mixed with the sloppy egg covered ripped bag I doubt it was a mistake. Overall it took about 20 minutes to get through the drive thru. I drove home and after looking at the bag and contents myself I decided to call and complain. After a female answered, "Neil's Donuts", I stated that my sandwiches were delicious and that I wanted to leave the grill cooks name in a review. No response. She just stopped talking. I repeated "hello. Are you there?", while listening to the background noise, for two minutes until I knew they wouldn't respond. I hung up then I called 2 more times in the next 10 minutes. Both calls went straight to voicemail. My girlfriend called and a female answered. She put it on speakerphone so I could listen or talk. The person we were speaking to was pleasant enough. My gf asked for the manager. The female stated that there was no manager atm but she was the closest thing. Gf asked for managers name and number. The stated that she couldn't give out their numbers but gave me 2 Managers names. Fair enough. I thanked her. She asked if we wanted to speak with the owner. I replied "sure". She asked for my name and contact number. I told her my name and gave my number. She said that she'd let someone know right after the call and that someone would get back to me most likely in the morning. That was a week ago. No call. After several days of waiting for a callback I sent an email. No response. I guess no one there really does care if employees intentionally mistreat a customer. Also worth noting, I went back the next day and it took 4 minutes to place and receive my order and leave the drive thru. 20 minutes one day because of a clown. 4 minutes the next morning when the team is working together. read more

The lady who waited on us was so very helpful. We arrived about 15 minutes before they closed, so we weren't able to try coffee roll, which is what they're known for. We did try 6 donuts tho: glazed, chocolate glazed, blueberry glazed, Boston Cream, Reese's and S'mores. The selection was amazing, even at the end of the day. I found Neil's Donuts by accident, my sister was mourning the loss of the vanilla buttercream that Dunkin no longer has, and I went to look for something new. I couldn't be happier, Neil's Donuts are amazing, fresh and full of flavor, I wouldn't have known they were vegan if I hadn't read it on their site. They have such an array of different flavors and so far each one has been a delight. Nothing is skimped on, the cream donuts are filled with cream, the iced donuts have a nice, generous coating, I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to chain donut restaurants after this. The packaging is so careful to keep everything separate and in perfect condition, the 6 pack I ordered came looking like something out of an advertisement despite me living roughly 40 minutes away from the restaurant, and yes the wait was more than worth it. read more

These donuts are amazing! Probably the best I've ever had. The filled donuts are not injected with a tiny squirt of filling. They are sliced in half and a thick layer is spread on the inside and the donut top is replaced. This results in getting lots of filling in every bite. There is no oily taste, like the chain donut shop down the street. Each donut is $1.79 and they are huge! Easily twice the size of chain donuts. Not much indoor seating, and what they do have could use more frequent cleaning. One of the best donuts in CT, hands down Woke up very early on a Saturday. Decided to look up the best breakfast spot in CT, distance was not an issue. This brand had the most positive reviews, with this location being one of the newer places and a little closer. I jumped into the car then drove to try the best breakfast in CT. Might as well By the time I get there , it's about 5 minutes before opening and there's already 6 people outside waiting for them to open. Always a good sign to see customers lined up. I ask everyone what the go-to's are, they tell me everythings great and try not to over-order When the doors open, I can understand why. There's a gigantic display of donuts of all different sizes and styles all adorning the wall. The longer you stand there, the more you end up picking. The 5 people in front of me order multiple dozens of donuts. and I opt for a dozen of my own. And a cinnamon Coffee Roll, because it was the size of a small child or large dinner plate. The sugar coated donuts were a little disappointing. The ones that are fried but coated to preserve them for longer. I got a pumpkin donut in that style and it was too dense. Coffee helped, but it helps with a lot of things. The regular fresh donuts I got were very good. Yeasty, soft, but not overly sweet. The sweetness came from the toppings, which were plentiful but not obnoxiously so. you could see that it was a donut underneath, unlike other specialty donut shops. Price-wise is pretty reasonable, about 15 bucks for a dozen of donuts. It's about average for a donut, but the quality is stellar For me, they are a bit too far away to make a trek to every week. but if they were closer I would seek them out. For the amount of people they had coming in and out of this place, the line moved fast, the staff was nice and they had a great selection. I would definitely recommend stopping in here. Lots of creative and yummy doughnuts to choose from. Six doughnuts for about $9 and a dozen for just under $13, so the pricing is great based on the great quality of the baked goods. The only negative thing I can think of is how they prepare doughnuts with jelly or other fillings - they cut the doughnut in half and put the filling in between the two halves, and I personally prefer when shops keep a doughnut whole and fill them with a piping bag, but that's just a personal preference and definitely didn't stop me from getting a dozen to hand out to my happy and grateful customers! read more

I've been looking forward to trying Neil's Donuts for awhile now. Unfortunately I was not impressed with my first visit yesterday, Saturday. I was there at 11:00am -- 3 hours before closing I was told that they were all out of bagel except for cheddar cheese bagels. I asked for a chocolate glazed donut and was told they were all out of those as well. The server was friendly but seemed a bit impatient, wanting to get the long line moving along. After I paid and was waiting for the kitchen staff to prepare my breakfast sandwich order, I was several trays of new Donuts coming out, none chocolate glazed though. The kitchen staff also slammed down 3 bags of kitchen orders through the little window, could have been a bit more gentle with the orders. Yeah. I'm that guy. I'm not sure I want to tell you my favorite Neil's donut. I'm afraid more people will order it and they'll run out sooner. It's gone by late morning sometimes, and that, disappoints me. In the way that avid readers devour books by their favorite authors, I'm constantly reading food and coffee Best Of Lists. This won't surprise fans of Neil's Donuts' Wallingford or Middletown location, but Neil's seems to be one of the most decorated Connecticut establishments in any category. When a Best Donut in Every State list sprouts on my Facebook feed, I say to myself "It's gonna be Neil's. It's gonna be Neil's." Spoiler alert - it's usually Neil's. I like to think I'm a decent cook. One large family gathering in Stamford, I dropped by Wallingford on my way and bought two dozen Neil's donuts instead of making a dish. Now, every gathering, "what do you want me to bring?" Neil's Donuts. Neil's is a classic donut place, which doesn't mean that Neil's lacks creativity or finesse. I've tried every major type of donut at Neil's: Boston Cream; Jelly; Cream-filled; Key Lime; Glazed Cruller; Old Fashioned; Iced and Non-Iced Cake Donuts; and Specialty Donuts. Every donut is one of the best I've had for each type. OK. I'll tell you, because I try not to be that guy. My favorite Neil's donut is the Glazed Cruller. It's a simple donut, executed perfectly. It's an elongated twist, so more of the surface area gets crisped up. The glaze is delicious. And the donut has these little indentations that expertly capture maximum glaze. It's a model donut. It's so, so, so, hard to open a second location. Will the magic spread from the first to the second? Will people show up? Will the donuts be as good in a new oven? Luckily, the answers here are all YES. The (no longer new) new location is conveniently located pretty much right on the drive from our house to my best friend's house and it has a drivethrough, which makes it pretty much illegal to NOT stop by when I'm going for a visit. I was not sure how I would do with a drivethrough, since so much of my Neil's vibe is taking in the smells and sights of the donut wall. Luckily, I had a brief moment to actually read the menu and put together an order and I could not believe the speed with which my order was ready. I'm still loyal to the OG spot, since it's right around the corner, but this is a wonderful second spot where I see myself frequenting in the future! read more
