These are some of the best donuts you can find in CT and they are a no frills approach to what a donut should be. Forget the crazy toppings and Instagram setting, here it is all about the donut. They are real donuts in classic flavors such as Boston cream, jelly-filled, white iced, as well as some more creative flavors like Samoa and Oreo. The donuts are fresh, large, and relatively cheap ($7.25 for 1/2 dozen). It's hard to pick a favorite flavor, but I really love the powdered with the chocolate cream filling. They were sold out of them today, so I guess we are going to have to make another trip back ASAP. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they open a Middletown location in the near future!! read more

Was in the area for a family obligation and were in need of some breakfast. Saw that this place was highly reviewed and who doesn't love donuts? The Good: this place is obviously popular as the parking lot was full and they had the place set up inside like a ride at Disney. They were well organized and the donuts were great. I got a couple cinnamon, a Boston creme, some sprinkles, and a lemon chocolate. All were excellent. No complaints from the family at all and I even heard "This was the best Boston Creme I've ever had!" The Not as Good: as soon as I walked in, I felt overwhelmed like I was one of those guys on the NYSE bartering for donuts. I guess I should have done my HW before I went in, because I didn't know what I wanted, but the girl waiting on me was nice and patient, so this was more of a me problem. My wife is a tea drinker and always gets a London Fog. Wow, this place is a major icon in the area and for good reason they have a very good product and the rapid turnover guarantees the freshest donuts and pastries possible. I was blown away by the high quality of service in light of how busy this place is, honestly I haven't seen anything like it, I was awe struck! So why only a four rather than a five star review? I sampled a raspberry Danish, Bear claw and a Glazed donut and I believe I definitely have had a better Danish and Bear Claw, the glazed donut was very good yet not quite there for me based on my local donut shop. Usually I follow the line through organized chaos to get the doughnuts I bring to work (blatant bribery). The staff are friendly, efficient-patient too, so tip them. Doughnuts are fresh, varied and yummy- my boss likes the Boston cream and vanilla filled. Neil's doesn't just squeeze a little filling inside, they cut the doughnut in half and load in the filling, generously. I don't know how people don't go into sugar shock. I live in North Haven and stop by at least once a week for a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on a delicious hard roll made fresh while you wait . Incredible service and even better food. I've been hearing about the notorious Niels for months now and I decided to give it a try. I went around 9am on a Sunday and got nervous when I pulled up to find a full parking lot and a line out the door. Don't fret though, the line moved so fast I was inside within 2 minutes and my order was being taken in 4 minutes. I do suggest doing some research before going in because ordering happens so fast you should know what donuts you want going in. There were so many people working that the process went so fast. I ordered 4 donuts and a coffee. Let me just say, get a coffee, and get an Oreo donut. Yes it is like dessert for breakfast but oh my god is it worth it. You can taste the quality on these donuts. I first heard of Neil's Donuts through a vegan group online. Someone had visited Neil's, taken pictures of their donuts, and posted that Neil's has a list of donuts that are "accidentally" vegan. This one post started a wave of people posting about Neil's, visiting the place, buying donuts and posting pictures. Connecticut has a large vegan population and the word got out that Neil's offers vegan donuts. People began contacting them, asking about the ingredients of their vegan donuts, trying to verify that they are indeed vegan. I had never heard of Neil's but after the wave of people posting about them, I had to go check it out. Walked in and told them I was informed they have vegan donuts. The girl behind the counter replied "They're vegan if you eat sugar." Some sugar is filtered in a way that uses animal parts and is not vegan. Cane sugar CAN be filtered this way but beet sugar is not. This process is becoming less common but there's no way to know for sure with many sugars. Cane sugar and organic sugar are always vegan. I asked for a half dozen donuts and was shocked at how low my total was. I don't remember the number but it wasn't much. The donuts were all absolutely friggin' amazing and I had eaten all six of them by the time I went to bed that night. A few weeks later I returned to Neil's and asked for a dozen assorted vegan donuts. I'm pretty sure I ate eight of them that night and saved only four for the next day. That's not to say their donuts are small! They are big and heavy. This is just how I eat. Not long after that, a friend of mine brought me Neil's donuts as a surprise. Yumm! One thing I will say is that I contacted Neil's regarding the sugar they use. I asked them if they would consider switching to organic sugar for their vegan donuts so they can fully market them as such. No one ever replied. On one hand, I can understand that they'd probably been contacted about their vegan donuts repeatedly...on the other hand, there's strong demand and a lot of money from donut hungry vegans just waiting for fully vegan noms. Veganism is growing and the demand for vegan donuts is huge. It seems Neil's may not have much interest in offering fully vegan donuts and marketing them as such. Maybe I'm wrong? Either way, vegan donuts are hard to find and if sugar that can't be fully verified is the only thing preventing these donuts from being "vegan" that's okay by me. I can't verify that the sugar in my ketchup is vegan, either. I've been back to Neil's since I contacted them and I expect I'll be back soon. The sugar isn't keeping me from going to Neil's more often, it's my inability to eat less than twelve donuts a day keeping me at bay. read more
