While our tire was disintegrating as we were traveling in the breakdown lane, we pulled off at the next exit. Since we had to travel with only the exposed rim for about 2 miles we thought we might have to check into a hotel for the night to fix the problem. Then (cue heavenly music!) we spotted D & S Auto Repair. When David heard about our problem and saw that, in fact the rim was destroyed, he volunteered that he had a trailer tire already mounted on the rim that he would sell us and mount for $100! This is one of the most gracious acts of kindness we have experienced and years of touring. I wound up with a flat tire in the Stop & Shop parking lot across the street from Plunske's. No…read moreproblem, I figured: I know how to change a tire. But it was a rental car, and I immediately discovered there was no spare tire -- just a device to inject fix-a-flat goo and compressed air into the flat. I'd never seen such a device before, so I walked over to Plunske's and asked for their advice. The first person I spoke to dropped what he was doing to help me figure out how to use the gizmo. I returned to my car, reinflated the tire, and drove it to Plunske's. There I encountered a second employee -- Dan, I think -- who was just as friendly and even more helpful. He removed the tire, carefully checked it visually for holes or leaks, immersed it in water to look for bubbles (and found none), replaced it on the car, made sure it was properly reinflated, and sent me on my way. The whole process with Dan took about 30-40 minutes, and he couldn't have been nicer or more thorough. I'm very grateful for the assistance of both people who helped me at Plunske's.
