Seems like a typical American bar and restaurant. We just picked up some pizza for the kids but it seemed fairly packed / popular. The salad bar is a nice touch and the atmosphere seemed good. I'll definitely stop in again if we're on the area. As for the pizza, it was very thin crust (which I think they are known for). They didn't have by-the-slice or kids pizza's so we got a "bar pie". The regular size is only $1 more so I'd recommend going with the bigger one. read more

I have been stopping by this place as a treat to myself for years. It has some really great thin crust pizza. I know everybody touts that Kinchley's in Mahwah is the best around but Nellies gives it a run for its money. I been to both if you gotta problem with I'll see you outside buddy! It has a full bar and the other fare is very good too. But really the whole reason to go there is the pizza. I do gotta say it gets very crowded there so maybe getting it to go would be better. Kinchley's was packed on a Monday night at 6 so we headed over to Nellie's for our pizza instead. 3 stars for two reasons- one, there were two hostesses when we walked in. One older, one younger. They continued talking to each other for a minute before looking our way to seat us. Even then, it was my husband who said two please. I heard the hostesses great other patrons with a "how are you tonight?" after we arrived. We did not receive that friendly greeting. The second reason for the 3 stars is the wait for a waiter to come over. We were sitting for ten minutes before our drink order was taken. It didn't bother me, but my husband was put off. After that though, our waiter was attentive and on point. As for the food, the bacon pie was delicious. Just the right crispiness (a word???!?) without being too crunchy. My husband loved the salad bar, but was not impressed with the cheesesteak sandwich. We will be back for the pizza! read more

The thin crust pizza at Nellie's is amazing. It's a great place to go with a few friends and order a few pies and a few pitchers of beer. They also have a considerable Italian/American menu, and I've never seen anyone disappointed in their food. Some of it might not blow you away, but it's always good. It tends to get really crowded on the weekends... sit in the section on the far side of the bar (shouldn't be an issue now that it's all non-smoking) if you want it to be a little quieter or if you are a small party. Went in for an early dinner with my son. We always sit at high tops when we dine. We sat at a high top in the bar- which by the way, were all completely empty. I went to up to the bartender who Ignored me until I finally said "excuse me, can I have menus for us to eat". With an attitude he said that I need to go to the entrance around the corner and see a hostess to be seated. Even though we are already there and they are all empty? Yes! He said. As I was about to go do that he then barked at me that we can't sit there because my son isn't big enough. I did a double take and looked confused and he then said "it's an insurance policy". Like I've said I've dined out many times with my son even when he was smaller and have always sat at high tops- if it was too high for him to eat I wouldn't of sat there. In addition I was in the restaurant business for over 20 years and have never heard of such an "insurance policy". I decided to leave, not because of the policy but because of the attitude . It's not the first time I've seen this guy act this way towards guests in that restaurant. I love their pizza, but I'm not going to go there anymore. I go out to eat to enjoy myself, not to walk on egg shells because the bartender is miserable and only feels like taking care of certain guests not others. For thin crust pizza and delicious apps this is the place to go in Northern NJ. I can't speak to other items on the menu as we only ever get an appetizer and the pizza. Fried calamari is good, wing are delicious. My husband craves them. I love their white pie with garlic. Other favorites are veggie, salami, plain but the truth is they have all been really yummy. Nellies has decent bar food- bar pies, apps, and sandwiches. Can't speak on behalf of any of their entree items or the salad bar, which I understand others may come back for (tbh seems small to me). Generally speaking, food has been consistent in our many visits here. The potato skins are great- though if you're like me, have to request that extra sour cream because they are a little stingy in that area. Have a lot of cheese and bacon though- so that makes up for it! Pizza overall is thin crust, pretty good. I am a fan of the white pie. Beer tap selection rotates pretty well. Prices are on the higher side for what I'd call bar food, and service in our many visits has left something to be desired, with exception to the bar- where bartenders seem to be attentive, interactive and courteous. read more

We are regulars here. Everyone we have brought has also liked the place Decor is old an worn an the tables can be crowded. Best thing about Nellies is the thin crust pizza and wings. Wings come in mild, medium, hot or Elkin (a spicy rub and taste almosted roasted). Top off with a pint from the bar and you got a good cheap meal. Sandwiches and burger are also good. Conveniently close, and on top of that, a tasty thin crust pizza! My personal favorite, half artichoke & half mushroom!! I've had pasta here a couple times... tasty but nothing crazy special, but it does come with the salad bar, where you can fill your plate with whatever you like. I think this is gonna be our new local pizza place. We've had takeout twice and both times we ordered thin crust, and gluten free pies. The thin crust is really good and crispy, just enough cheese and sauce. Plain pies are less than $10, how can you beat that? The gluten free is really good for gluten free but creeps up to the $15-20 range when you add toppings. We haven't had to wait more than 15 minutes for the order to be ready. Score!! read more

Heard this place was good, especially from the locals. What I received was totally the opposite. Bad pizza, bad service especially if you are a minority. I was at the waiting area to pick up a takeout order, first person there. The person working the front saw me and gave me a look of disdain. I stated that I was here to pick up my order. Totally ignored. She kept her head buried, pretending to be crossing out names on her seating list, which no one was behind me at the time. Three separate parties come in behind me later, and she had to talk around me to seat them. After 10 minutes, she finally relented and asked me why I was there, which was to pick up an order that was called in over 30 minutes ago. Without a word, she went back to the kitchen and got my order. I even said to have a good day, which I did not even get a response back. All the while, I got stares from some of the other patrons, as if I did not belong. I am a resident of the town, and never felt so ostracized anywhere else in the locale. Ordered a pizza, nothing special, and was even a bit mushy for a thin crust. People who actually know what good pizzas are, please do not go to Nellie's Place. According to 1/3 of the reviews currently on, they say bad service, and soggy thin crust. What defines a good thin crust is that it is crispy without being brittle. Outdoor seating was cozy but the perforated tables allowed spilled food and drinks on our feet. Service was fast and courteous. Turkey bacon Swiss burger was delicious but needed a much bigger bun. Steak fries were hot and crispy. Bathroom was clean. Plenty of parking. read more

This place seems like it has potential. I came with my family for dinner and waited about 20 minutes for a table. The wait didn't seem long though because the restaurant features live table updates straight to your phone while waiting. They also text you when your table is ready +1 star for that. Before ordering I went to check out the salad bar...it seemed mediocre and at the time we were there some of the contents didn't look turned over. One thing I hate about salad bars is when the grape tomatoes aren't sliced in half. Which is what Nellie's did not do. Our family ordered soup to start and they all seemed canned because of the high content. We also started with a bar pie. Although the crust seemed like it was pre made, the sauce on the pizza did not. The bar pie was the highlight of the Apps. My lil bro ordered a steak sandwich medium. He said it came out cold and they used sliced sandwich bread and not like a hero, so when it came out the bread was all soggy and unusable. My father had a burger and it was very good. I had a chicken panni. When it came out it looked perfect, however the chicken inside was cold while the rest of the panni was at a good temp. This happens all the time when I order a panni from any restaurant. I suspect the cold food was because of my server. Service here was bad. My server came to the table to take our order, drop our food off and filled my water once. He did not ask if everything was ok. And it took him a while to come back with the bill. As a former server in a restaurant I expect the same service I would give. I would of given this place 2.5 stars if I could but I rounded up because of the cool hostess system they have in place. read more

After 30 yrs as a customer of Nellie's this will be my First Bad Review After shopping and being hungry, 9pm, there was a choice between "The Fireplace" or Nellie's for Burgers Thus we choose Nellie's Let's start with service - service at McDonalds is better Then let's proceed with 1 order of soup Entree - 2 orders of Burgers ( 1 rare, 1 Med Rare ) Entrees came - soup never did ( omg I forgot, sorry) The med rare Burger was " well done" Buns were old and stale and tomato was not fresh We would have told the waitress, but she didn't come back! No worries - she took the med rare Burger off the bill Dessert time ! On the Board - Chocolate Mousse Cake And yes the waitress told us it was GF Many GF products are good, not an issue, however This dessert looked Old , Tasted Old , trying to find a "moist" area of the cake - was nowhere to be found ! It's a Tuesday night - minimal customers, thinking there should be no issues in the back of the house. I was in there after not being there in 3 years. I was with my daughter. The music was blasting at 8:30PM, there was a drunk group of guys , regulars, at the end of the bar and the owner/ bartender did nothing really. The pizza has changed so Kinchleys is now exclusive. This is the best restaurant I have ever been to in my entire life. They have the best food in the country, the best service in new jersey and the best pizzas this side of new york city. As far as the pizza goes, I honestly can't compare it to anything i've ever eaten in my entire life. The best bar pie I've ever had has been at nellie's. The sauce, the dough, and the combination of herbs and spices combine to entice the taste bud. You cant just have one slice. Went to this Waldwick Mainstay on a Friday night. What a mess. Doesn't take reservations for smaller parties. Place was overrun by people and kids. The greeter was AWOL for 15 minutes and no one was even able to take our name for a table. Pizza looked soggy and the place was dirty. Left without being seated. Avoid. read more

Went for dinner. It was very crowded. The hostess, while nice, didn't project her voice to call people when their tables were ready very well. It was clear they were down one wait staff member that evening, so I won't dock them for slow service. The salad bar was yummy, but they were missing a few items and didn't replace them. I was there with two girl friends last night. It was great! Loved the ambiance. It was very busy for a Tuesday evening. We ordered fried calamari and vegetable thin crust pizza, both were great. My friend Chloe and i ordered the large pizza (half plan, half sausage) and the elkin wings. My other friend yara ordered cheesy fries. Our food came out quick and hot! The pizza was thin crust with the perfect amount of cheese and sauce. Food is ok. (Descriptions on board are not clear and the servers never mention them) The Service is worse. Most times the people seem miserable and flustered and stressed. I once called for a reservation for 4pm and the person on the phone asked if we were ok to just eat and leave or if we were going to sit and talk for a while? I was so shocked that they asked me that. He literally said "Well if you promise to just order eat and get out in an hour we can make the reservation for you." Very turned off.
