We went to Nellie's for first time , We had 9 people including our 2 children going out for holiday dinner together. It was so crowded and hostess said 30min wait. We were going to leave because so crowded but decided to stay and glad we did. We were seated in 10 mins then we had nicest waitress with this cute holiday shirt on that my children loved and she came up with a smile saying Happy Holidays and handed my children crayons and coloring books. We ordered appetizers and pizza and everything was excellent and even how busy it was waitress had out quick and was so nice. We would definitely go back. Sister suggested we come to Nellie's......wow what can I say aside from the loud yelling kids in there ,pizza was really good. Service was good...neat atmosphere and very busy. I have been here a total of 3 times...hoping that things would be better because I really enjoyed the super thin-crust pizza (any of the ones with fresh basil were tasty). The service is spotty at best. The first time I went, it took nearly 30 minutes for someone to take our names. There were a lot of people waiting, but no "hostess" to be seen. They seemed to care more about the people picking up take out orders. The food was good, so we decided to come back again on another night when it wasn't as busy. Our 2nd attempt was on a Sunday evening and the place was completely empty except for a few patrons at the bar. It took at least 10 minutes for the bartender to acknowledge our presence and to let us know that we can sit anywhere. Then it took another 15 minutes for someone to take our order (we had to track down a waiter). The food came out 30 minutes later. I thought to myself that maybe it was a fluke and we'll try Nellie's again. Shame on me! The last time we went is the reason why I'm writing this review. The food was tasty, but the service was terrible. My friend's mom asked for a refill on a glass of water. The older waiter (not sure what his name is but he had grayish black hair and a really sour look on his face the whole time we were there) seemed annoyed that she asked. When he came back with the water, we were in the process of cleaning up a spill of half a cup of water and some ice that was inadvertently knocked over, so she asked for another cup of water. He rolled his eyes and left in a huff. He came back and literally SLAMMED the cup on the table in front of my friend's elderly mom and stormed off. A nice woman who was seated next to us gave us their extra napkins because this guy didn't help out at all. Obviously, some spilled water is cause enough for his discourteous behavior. Absolutely ridiculous. I wish I had gotten his name. If you don't care about service, then Nellie's is your place to go. At least the food is consistent and the prices are reasonable. read more

Pizza is pretty good. The dough was a little cardboard-y and I was leery of asking for well done because I didn't want the cheese burned. Kinchley's and A Mano have better pizza, in my opinion; but Nellie's is pretty good. My family was satisfied with their meals (two burgers and a chicken sandwich). Appetizers (potato skins and jalapeno poppers) were very good. Service was fine(half of my wife's chicken sandwich fell off the plate as the waitress was serving it and it was quickly and cheerfully replaced) and the promised 20 minute wait was only 10. Black mark. No free soda refills, very unusual in this day and age. But I knew that going in thanks to comments made here. Also, cramped and noisy, with lots of young kids. But, hey, that's the type of place it is. There's also a salad bar for people who order full dinners (or who just want salad). I thought that kind of thing went the way of the dodo. For a place with decent food and decent variety, this place fits the bill just fine and I'd go back. It's not great, just fairly good and you won't go wrong eating here. I met a friend there today at 2:30 to catch up on life. There was only one waitress in the side dining room and she was TERRIBLE. Never checked on if everything was ok or did we need a refill on our drinks. A table of 7 people walked out after 20 minutes of waiting to be greeted by the waitress and because of all the noise from the unruly children. On top of the horrible service parents were allowing their children to run around the dining room with no regard for anyone else. The hostess was there she said nothing the waitress said nothing absolutely no one asked these parents to control their children and keep them seated at their table. This was not McDonald's or Chuckie Cheese! I don't blame the children, it's their parents lack of parenting that is the problem! Children today think they can do whatever they want because their idiot parents don't teach them anything! Nellie's was always a family place but this behavior never went on before. We just moved to Waldwick and were so happy to be so close to Nellies. I used to frequent this place all the time as a kid. We have Dined here twice this summer and both times it was not good. The people that work there are very unfriendly. We were waiting for a table outside and five different people came over to ask us what we needed. Two different servers tried to take our drink order. There was hair in my daughters pasta. Thank god the pizza is good because they really need to do a better job managing the place also the first time we were there, my toddler yelled out in joy and a customer screamed at her to stop making noise. It was 5:30pm at a kid friendly place. Was hoping my server would come reassure us that it was ok but that never happened. After two bad experiments, I felt a review was warranted. read more

Came here tonight with local friends for a bite after a gathering. What a nice find -- one of those great local hangout gems. Tuesday was all-you-can-eat pasta night, though my serving of baked penne was so large I couldn't eat more than half of it -- and so will enjoy the rest for lunch! At I think $12.99 with salad bar or soup, it was an excellent deal. Appetizers also excellent, and the Buffalo calamari a nice twist on two classics! Only thing that could maybe be a minor tweak is more basic ingredients in the salad bar; I have a nut allergy and a lot of times the various pasta salads and pepper mixes that they had could just be worrying, but tasty looking. Not that I wasn't satisfied by choice, and for someone without allergies it'd be no big deal. Overall, a great spot to have found, and I'll definitely be back. The list on pasta night deserves further exploring, not to mention the general menu! A perfect weeknight break. read more

Yes, the pizza is great but the service gets worse and worse. For the third time in our last four takeout experiences, the order took substantially longer than I was told over the phone and the hostess could not possibly have cared less. I was told it would take 10 - 15 minutes on the phone, showed up 20 minutes later and proceeded to wait nearly 20 minutes longer after I got there. And it wasn't even crowded. The first time she went back to pick it up she returned to say only, "It's not ready yet" and take my money. She then disappeared again and came back maybe 5 minutes later, still empty-handed and this time had nothing to say. I asked why it was taking so long and she said, "I don't know. I'll ask." She returned again - still no food - to tell me they had to remake it. What was this complicated order that took multiple tries to perfect? A small plain pizza and a Caesar salad. Nellies vs Kinchley's Nellies wins hands down!. The one time I went to Kinchley's I was disappointed after all the hype I heard from people that Kinchley's was superior to Nellies. Kinchley's pizza was bland at best. I've never been disappointed withe the pizza at Nellies. It is my favorite thin crust pizza in the area (edging out Patsy's in Paterson). While the other menu items and the salad bar are ok, the pizza is the thing that keeps me coming back to Nellies. read more

Not sure what has happened to this place. Nellie's used to be consistent in terms of quality and service, but after my last visit, I will never be back. We were left waiting to order at our booth for over 20 minutes even though the restaurant was not busy. My veggie burger order was awful, and it was burned black. When the waitress brought it back and returned with another burger, it was the same. She was not apologetic and clearly was irritated even though I tried to be polite about the matter. I've been going to Nellie's for 24 years and I've never come across a staff member I do not like. However, on Friday evening when I was looking forward to sitting at the bar with my husband, I for the first time received service from Jimmy the bartender that was indifferent and to be honest terrible. We waited 15 minutes to be served and when he finally made eye contact with us, he actually spilled the wine all over that he was pouring for me and did not even clean it up. Two of us had lunch here today - never again. Waiter didn't come by to take our order for at least 20 minutes (only three other tables had customers). We had to signal for him and his excuse was he "thought we were waiting for another person as there were three menus on our table." Okay, so we ordered burgers which came out within 15 minutes and we watched our waiter carry them across the room and put them down on another table of two diners, who told him "not our order" and then he bought them over to us. No big deal - happens all the time. Finished most of our lunch - tasty, etc., but when I finished drinking my iced tea, I saw a bug in the bottom of my plastic glass! I picked it out from under the ice with my straw (and kept my nausea at bay). We decided not to mention it right away and make a big fuss (or mention it at all?) and waited for our check. Check came and we paid our check and left the money/tip on the table and started to get up to leave and as the waiter came over to take our check and money, we decided to show him the bug. He nodded and took the cup and we watched him just put it in the plastic tub containing other dirty dishes in the kitchen and he didn't tell the manager or anyone! Arrived to dining area empty tables with one large table waiting to sit ..my party of 2 walked to bar dining area open table got sat in corner booth with hard bar coming up threw the seat. Our waiter was a young man (Terence D) dirty T shirt, shorts, character ankle socks) ( we only found out his name when our check finally arrived). He never introduced himself ,did ask if we want a drink. I ordered the Caramel Apple Martini. Hmmm it was sheer water crystal clear but did have some vodka. Completely watered down overshaken, Now a specialty Martini should at least have a wedge or slice of fruit let alone an Apple considering it is a ""specialty ". We ordered the " special off the board" " Shrimp Combo" 3 greasy tasteless panko long shrimp and 3 coconut shrimp all obviously frozen but the coconut shrimp and wasabi yogurt dip were edible and decent.. the spinach dip was bland but the bread was nice. We ordered a specialty pizza the crust was not cooked long enough it was limp and light.. we were looking at ordering specialty coffees and a dessert BUT NEVER GOT ASKED IF WE WOULD LIKE DESSERT OR COFFEE..instead a box was brought for our leftover pizza and the check. Now mind you our waiter and the male host were more interested in wrestling by the door comparing 5 o"clock shadows than serving your customers.... very sad..... read more

I've tried this pizza twice, thinking maybe the first visit was a fluke but my opinion remains the same. Maybe it's the Brooklyn pizza snob in me, but to me, Nellie's pizza tastes like the frozen pizza you get out of the supermarket freezer. The bread and sauce have no taste and the pizza itself is not at all crisp - just soggy and plain. I don't understand the great pizza reviews this place gets. I can only imagine the folks who love it never had real pizza which isn't a surprise because Bergen County - while I love the area and don't miss Brooklyn at all since I moved out 2 years ago (except for the pizza) - is sorely lacking in decent pizza. The best place I've found is Pizza Town in Elmwood Park, but that's still kind of far for me to grab a great slice. I'm fortunate to work in Manhattan so if I need a pizza fix, I can get it soon enough. But Nellie's doesn't quite make the cut. Sorry!! Otherwise, it's a nice place with nice enough staff. Very upset with Nellies as of lately. My family was always a big fan of this homey little joint, but ever since a recent encounter with a very unprofessional waitress, we don't think we will ever go back again. We had family out from a different country and were trying to show them a nice meal out. The food and drinks were the same as always but the entire experience was ruined by our waitress, Ciara. She was rude, embarrassing, and not worth the tip we gave her. She was very aggressive, mean , and obviously had a bad day and took it out on us. Very bad service! Been hearing about Nellie's for awhile now and gotta say I'm a fan and I'd come back. My BIL lives close by and suggested we all go out for dinner after a family gathering. They've been here a bunch so it was helpful to have their input. First off it's kina divey but that's cool. They have a big Charlie Brown's style salad bar if you're into that, and a decent selection of beers on tap. From what they say, even tho the menu is quite large when you come to Nellie's you order pizza....not chicken parm, not a sandwich....but pizza. So we did that. Also if you get a salad to start off, a small is more than enough to split between 2 people. BIL and husband split a ceasar salad and SIL and I split a greek. The caesar was interesting because it had tomatoes and cucumbers which is not in a caesar salad but they call it "their own" so whatever, the greek was good, just enough dressing adn they crumbled the feta nice and small...nothing worse than eating a wad of feta in the midst of a salad (also we asked for no anchovies but if you're into that they use the real thing). Time for pizza, the men split meatball, mushroom, pepperoni, and the ladies had a gluten free crust veggie pie. Food was out in about 15 minutes which was nice. The guys pie looked great the only thing I could say is that the meatballs def looked like the frozen variety but they enjoyed it and nothing was left. Our veggie pie was also very good, I honestly forgot we ordered gluten free until they were asking what I thought of the crust. It was good, there was nothing amazing about it, I probably would have enjoyed the regular crust better but for a gluten free crust this was good and tasty. 2 pizzas, 2 salads, and several rounds the bill was $81 for 4 us....not bad really.
