My mom and I recently stopped by Nello's, and it was a phenomenal experience. It's been probably 20 years since I've been to a Nello's, so I was beyond excited to see if it lived up to the nostalgia. It definitely did! This location is tucked into a strip of shops and restaurants, making it easy to find with plenty of parking. We arrived just before the lunch rush, so we were able to snag a great spot and were seated immediately. Our server was incredible. I didn't catch her name because it was a bit loud, but she was an absolute pro --friendly, bubbly, and incredibly patient while we navigated the vast menu. Our drinks never even hit the halfway mark before she was there with a refill. If she isn't actually loving her job, she deserves an Oscar for that performance! We both opted for personal deep-dish pizzas --Margherita for Mom and BBQ Chicken for me. The crust was the star of the show: crispy, flavorful, and perfectly chewy. My only tiny critiques? The chicken chunks on the BBQ pizza were a bit big; I think smaller bites would have integrated better with the toppings. Also, the cheese seemed to cool down quite fast, which gave it a slightly different texture toward the end. However, the BBQ sauce was delicious and the onions provided the perfect bite. Also, quick pro tip: They do have a restroom! It's tucked around a corner in a spot that looks like a dead end, but don't panic -- it's there lol. I absolutely recommend Nello's. Between the full bar, the outstanding service, and the very reasonable prices (my pizza was all of $12!), it's a total win. We'll definitely be back! read more

My mother and I went here for my birthday lunch today. It's the first time we've been in a couple years, but our previous meals have been wonderful. I started out with the calamari appetizer, which is $17. The portion was extremely small and lacking in actual calamari because they also had mixed in peppercinis and shrimp. The flavor was pretty good and I really liked the dipping sauce. My mother went for their lunch special and got the side salad and an 8 inch pizza. I wanted to treat myself so I got the penne à la vodka, and added chicken. Once the dishes hit the table, the first thing I noticed was that the same chicken that was prepped and went on the pizza was the chicken that was in my pasta, so nothing was freshly grilled or made to order there, and despite looking very seasoned, it was dry and didn't taste like much. I took a bite of the pasta and it was overcooked and for some reason the vodka sauce had no flavor at all. I'm not just talking bland. I'm talking like this tasted like wet nothing. I made a comment to my mom who said her pizza also was bland and she said "and I know if I think it's bland you'll think it taste like nothing" Sure enough, she was right. Somehow her pizza was bland and tasteless too. She asked for a side of pizza sauce to dip for the pizza and maybe give more flavor and it tasted like tomato paste just straight acidic no other hints of anything. We opted to just take boxes and take it home and reaseason our food and hopefully be able to enjoy leftovers. I asked for the free birthday cannoli since the email was what reminded me I'd like to go back to Nellos. The waitress was very nice. Put a candle in it and she was very attentive. The dessert, however, tasted like it was made more than a week ago and sat in the fridge since the shell was completely like a sponge no crunch no freshness at all. Overall liking one of four things that we got was not the kind of experience we hoped for and especially in this economy spending $60 on lunch I hoped for some well seasoned freshly made food. Nello's is a good option of your in the area and looking for a salad, wings, and pizza. Have been here multiple times. The bar looks cozy as you walk in and if I was by myself, that's probably where I'd go sit. As a party of two on this occasion, we were quickly greeted and sat at a clean booth by the window. The bathrooms are clean and I liked that you can open the door with your foot on the way out. I've had the wings here before and they are delicious. Their salads come in two options and the personal size is good as a starter. I usually opt for the Old World Classic. I really liked that they serve the pizzas hot and the cheese is melting as you pull it apart. Their gluten free pasta is good. I also loved the plastic free leftover boxes they provide. We were able to fit both our leftovers in one box. A few things went wrong on this visit. The restaurant felt a little too cold for me but my hubby most likely appreciated the extra chill. When we ordered our drinks, out server got our orders wrong and that left me concerned. We both ordered salads and while the Nello's dressing is pretty good, the salads themselves are nothing to write home about, leaving something left to be desired. We ordered pizzas and we both agreed they were missing a bit more tomato sauce, especially to balance out the saltiness from my anchovies. For my build your own pizza, I goth the 12" gluten free crust, then added mushrooms, black olives, basil, pinneapple, & anchovies. I opted for the anchovies as my protein because I was in a pescatarian mood and this was a $5 add on. I've had good anchovies before so I knew the potential flavor profile. The sardines were so salty, the saltiness overpowered all the flavors. While the pinnacle helped tame that saltiness, I think some acidity from some extra tomato sauce would have helped add balance. The flavor was good but I just couldn't get over the extra salt. Next time, I would ask for extra sauce. Ultimately, for how much we paid and our overall experience, we both felt Spinatos is a much better place. read more

I got the Margherita 8" crispy and hubby got the Nellos wings and a Caesar salad. The pizza was the perfect single serving size, the crust was perfectly crispy, and the ingredients all tasted fresh. I will have to get a bigger pie next time because I want more of the center to indulge in all the flavors! The hubby said the wings are the typical wings you expect from a pizza place and he enjoyed the Nellos sauce and the slight char on the wings. Salad was good too. I had lunch here after not having been in a couple of years. I had a side salad with house dressing and an order of meatballs as my meal. The good news was the dressing was still delicious and the salad was fresh and huge. The bad news is they don't give near enough of the dressing to go around the big salad and each little extra cup is a dollar. The meatballs were pretty greasy and had little flavor. Gonna try again, but will go in with the knowledge that I am gonna be spending a couple of extra buck on salad dressing and will try something other than the meatballs. For starters we made it for happy hour and received $2 off Specialty Cocktails. The cucumber jalapeños and prickly pear were both delicious and refreshing. We ordered the Sajone pizza--topped with house sausage, Schreiner's Pavone pepperoni, grilled radicchio, fresh mozzarella, and a touch of sage. The flavors were incredible! The savory sausage and pepperoni paired perfectly with the slight bitterness of the radicchio. The sage added just the right hint of earthiness that tied everything together. Service was friendly and efficient and the restaurant looked clean. Can't wait for the weather to cool down and enjoy the patio with the dogs. Came here for a lunch for two a few weeks ago, on a weekday. Hostess was nice and were seated quickly and said which server would come by. Restaurant was pretty empty, had maybe 5-6 other groups/pairs and there seemed to only be 1 server working, so tried to be patient, but no one came by for about 10 minutes. I tried getting the bus boy's attention and he even made eye contact with me, but then he totally ignored us and walked away - several times. I also tried to get the server's attention, but she also either didn't see us or pretended not to, not sure. When we finally got her attention, she was very friendly and helpful, but I did not appreciate that we had to wait this long to even get our drink orders taken with barely an apology for feeling ignored. The food was decent (but I felt it was slightly overhyped), but they really need to not ignore certain patrons and make us almost beg to be seen. I really don't want to mention this, but I couldn't help but wonder if this was because we're not Caucasian, because that was how it felt (before the server finally helped us, I saw her being very attentive to many other patrons - there was only 1 other minority group, but I'm not sure how much attention they got/didn't get). I went here 1 other time for dinner a few years ago and we had much better service and the food was a bit better, so this lunch visit was somewhat disappointing, to be honest. read more

We just had a great new experience at our neighborhood Nello's in Ahwatukee! My wife said let's do Nello's Fish Fry on Wednesday nights only. I said "What?" They do Fish? And yes they do. For about $16 they serve 2 huge, thick, and hot pieces of fish....surprisingly delicious. Along with great fries and coleslaw...yummy. Walking into Nello's in Ahwatukee compared to the Mesa location feels like walking into your in-laws' party--more formal and a bit less comfortable. Nothing beats the Mesa location. The salad portion in Ahwatukee was noticeably smaller, and the pizza crust appetizer wasn't as crisp. I'd say the pizza itself was on par, but the signature crust wasn't quite as good. Overall, the service was good, and the ambiance felt more upscale, whereas the Mesa location has more of a laid-back, classic pizza joint vibe. The Ahwatukee location still served good food, just not quite at the same level. I'd go back if I were in the area 3.5/5. read more

When you advertise a "Cucumber-Melon Salad with arugula, Cappacola and feta", it would help if the cucumber and feta weren't left off. It would also help if there was more than a few tiny pieces of melon. The prickly pear dressing was good. This salad wad a miss at $18. We ordered tiramisu for dessert, but had to return that because the lady fingers hadn't been soaked in coffee. They were dry! WTH? The waitress begrudgingly brought us something else. I guess we were supposed to be thrilled. This used to be a good place, but it's gone downhill. Spend your money somewhere else. read more

Nello's was a great experience nestled away in a strip mall in Ahwatukee. Surprised I missed this place after so many years in the area. Nello's was more upscale than I expected and had a welcoming staff and bar. The menu is on the simple side but it works and the pizza was very good. Nello's is full service and had a decent size dining room. I recommend the garlic bread bruschetta and pan style pizza. We are not talking a Chicago style pan pizza and it was actually on the lighter side with more crust. The service was very good and while it was upscale there were a few televisions on to catch the end of Sunday football. Best of all, prices were very reasonable! I will definitely be going back to try some of the other pizza and appetizer options. read more

We've tried Nello's as a takeout pizza place before but tried it for the first time as a dine-in restaurant. We went on a Saturday around 5pm and were pleasantly surprised they have happy hour on weekends! We ordered the Fritto Misto, Wings and Arugula salmon salad at the restaurant amd got a few pizzas to go. I really liked the Fritto Misto. Fried calamari and shrimp came with a red pepper sauce. We tried the wings with the "golden sauce" which was honey mustard and buffalo. I've never had that flavor sauce on wings and we enjoyed it. Will probably try the other flavors next time but will definitely come back to this one. The arugula salmon salad was good and pretty filling with the couscous. I loved how it paired with white wine. Pizzas were took out were pretty good. I personally like Neapolitan pizza so prefer other places for the pizza but they were all tasty, fresh and great for the price. Our server, Gabby, was superb. It was pretty busy for early evening on a Saturday (probably because they have Happy Hour until 6pm even on weekends) but we never had to wait around for anything. She was very professional and amazing at her job. She came around at the perfect time to get our orders whether it was drinks, appetizers or main food, and also put in our to-go pizzas at the perfect timing and continuously checked on us. read more
