Totally unique vibe. Very bohemian crowd. Great Burgers! Particularly the chicken burger. Very Unique style, totally has its own thing going with the flavor. The best I can describe it, is that it has a retro-craft feel. I really dig it. Food comes out quick and is excellent. Bar tender and staff is friendly and chill. You can taste the cooking oil is kept clean, and is changed often by the fries and the smell. You can taste the food is made to order with real food. They also have cool events all the time. Like a poker night, and trivia night. I think the poker nights are Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm and 8pm. It's a little hard to find, tucked behind another building, just off the main road. Carful parking the little lot in the back, they have a massive pot-hole thing... just go real slow. Always seem to meet the most interesting people there. Nelson's Burger Bar is the "misfit island of toys" of the burger scene. Infact "scene" is exactly the right word to describe it. This place is a total trip. On our way out of Tallahassee, my husband was craving a burger. I like burgers too, but don't crave them like my husband... but let me tell you- this was a burger not to miss! We sat at the bar- they had indoor and outdoor as well, but the bar was good. Our server was amazing- funny & knowledgeable about the menu- loved him. My husband ordered the Carolina dog and the Nelson burger and he loved them both. I loved my Nelson burger as well. It was big, but it was tasty and seemed like we had just cooked it on our grill outdoors. It was a nice, clean, bright space, and the food was delicious. We will definitely go back if we are in the area - craving a burger, hotdog, or sandwich - all of the sides/extras looked amazing as well. We will have to try those next time. read more

I really enjoyed Nelson's Burger Bar -- the food and music were great! I was surprised to see a full bar and really wish it were the kind of day I could've indulged! I'm staying at the aloft hotel downtown and wanted a good burger so I decided to DoorDash and came across Nelson's Burger Bar. I ordered the Nelson burger. I added sautéed mushrooms, bacon and blue cheese dressing. I went with a double patty, which is probably too much but this burger is probably the best burger I've ever had in my life! I haven't tried any other burgers, but I'm sure they're just as fabulous. Walked over to Nelson's Burger Bar from my hotel and this place is for sure a hole in the wall. We came in on Thursday and what do you know just in time for trivia. We sat at the bar and checked out their large drink menu. I will say a lot of the drinks didn't have prices but I ordered a House Margarita. Our bartender made it just the way I like to too... STRONG! I then started looking at the food menu and like the drink menu it is also huge. It honestly took my about 20 minutes to figure out what I wanted. (this did help me to focus on trivia.) I asked the bartender what she recommended. She said the Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich. After thinking about it the Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich actually sounded really good so I went with it, plus it comes with both Ham and Bacon so that's a win already. I also upgraded my side of fries to Chili Cheese Fries cause why not. Within 15 minute my food was out and my Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich looked really good. I quickly got into it and damn it's hot! I let it cool for a bit and it was pretty tasty. Could have maybe used some Honey Mustard but that's just me. The fries were crinkle cut and covered in cheesy sauce as well as chili. I'm pretty sure the chili was the bean-less Hormel Chili so just a heads up because it over powers everything. I for sure had a good time at Nelson's Burger Bar and would come back for the food, staff/bartender, and of course trivia. Just a heads up. Went we paid automatic tipping options started at 25% then 30% and 35% so if that something your not able just know. I will say I didn't have an issue with it since our bartender was great. So good. When I'm at Nelson's calories don't count. I've only ever gotten the regular cheeseburger with fries - it's the perfect amount of salty goodness. One day I'll venture out on the menu. They have a lot of other options like sandwiches, dogs, salads, and wraps. Usually, I'd pick a healthier side like coleslaw but not here--give me the fries! They have the perfect amount of crinkle and crunch. The space is small so expect it to be crowded but they do have a bar and outdoor area. The service is always friendly and prompt. I'd rank Nelson's as one of the top burger spots in town. read more

In the former Voodoo Dog location, Nelson's Burger Bar offers a great alternative to fast food places. The menu is primarily hamburgers and hot dogs with different toppings. They do have a new extended menu with sandwiches like BLT and chicken sandwiches. I ordered a Nelson burger (like a traditional cheeseburger) with Cole slaw and sweet tea. The hamburger looked and tasted like a homemade burger and was very tasty. I added Cole slaw to my burger, which was good in theory, but their slaw was too wet for me. The sweet tea was really sweet. The customer service was great. Everyone was nice and the food came out quickly. Really great vibe as well. **Went back and got the burger, this time with fries. The fries were not good. It was surprisingly good, the burgers were really tasty. They were like homemade burgers like you make at home. The only difference is the ones I make at home are bigger. I would give this place zero stars if I could. One in our party ordered the chicken parm sandwich. When it arrived, the portion was so small that it looked like a child's portion. There was hardly any marinara and the mozzarella wasn't melted. And the from the taste of the chicken, it was obvious the fryer oil was old and had not been changed. The person who ate the sandwich became ill immediately after and vomited in the restaurant's bathroom. Everyone else in the group had stomach issues after their meals. This place is disgusting and I have no idea how it garnered 4.4 stars on Yelp. The only thing positive I have to say is the server was wonderful. Nelson's Burger Bar is the newest burger joint in town, and they are a great addition. Owned by a soon-to-be local, the owners currently live in Perry where they have another Nelson's burger joint. But that's not all: they have a 3rd location in Georgia (actually, Georgia was #2 and Tallahassee #3, but who's counting). These are smash burgers, and they are mighty tasty! I went with the Nelson Burger: 1/3lb. topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, ketchup and mustard. I was hungry, so I made it a double. That was one very tasty, perfectly cooked burger. I had plain fries with it, although they offer a large variety of tricked out fries. They also had coleslaw, which I got in the side, and it was tasty. We also had their cheese sticks and pretzel bites, both of which were good. I was also able to try their corn dog bites which were also tasty. The owner is really excited to be in Tallahassee. He's planning to add a nice patio in front of the restaurant, which will give us a nice outdoor venue to enjoy their burgers. I heartily recommend you give Nelson's a try! read more

Came here while on vacay in Tallahassee and really enjoyed it. I got the Carolina style chili dogs and my husband got a bbq burger, we both liked our food. The waiter/bartender was so sweet and friendly, we're from the MS gulf coast so we love to banter back and forth. H was full of good ol southern hospitality and was also helpful when we had questions about the menu. Tried Nelson's prior the FSU basketball game Saturday. Noon and we were their first customers. The ambience is stark and sterile. Nothing on the white walls. Tin roofing clads the service bar. My friend ordered a fried chicken sandwich, server informed us they were out of "chicken patties" and would substitute chicken tenders. I ordered the Nelson burger with a side of slaw. 2 iced teas. Food arrived in a timely manner. It's served on paper lined plastic trays. Friend's crinkle cut fries were crisp and hot. 2 chicken tenders on a basic hamburger bun. My burger was well well done and was rather small. Way too much mustard for my liking. The cole slaw was so sweet I couldn't eat it. Store bought I would guess. Suggest they make their own - so much better than store bought. Our bill was $30 plus tip. Not a good value for the money. Sorry to say, probably won't be back. read more

I think they tried to open this restaurant before they were ready. The new counter wasn't secured, and it looked like two unfastened pieces of raw plywood sitting on top of a frame. We went to Nelson's before an FSU basketball game. The place is supposed to open at 11 am, but when we showed up at 11:30, the doors were locked, and we waited until someone saw us to unlock the door. All of the artwork from the previous restaurant had been taken down, with nothing put up to replace it. Because of this, the restaurant seemed sterile, lacked ambience, and was void of any type of character. First things first: they don't serve beer yet, which is a huge drawback. My husband ordered the Nelson burger, and in his words, "It was just an average hamburger." I ordered the luau burger. The burger lacked flavor, and the teriyaki sauce was thick and messy, making the burger hard to eat. The location is great, but they need to up their game if they want to be successful in a college setting. read more

I was excited to try this establishment because of the reviews. First, parking is difficult and inconvenient! I considered parking in the gated area next to the building, but a giant hole may have damaged my car. I parked on the street in front of the building. Please be aware there's only space for one car on the street. The other areas are no parking zones and tow-away parking spaces. After walking in and wondering what the seating process was, I asked if I could sit anywhere. The atmosphere gives "hole in wall."Don't get me wrong, some of the best food comes from a local hole-in-the-wall. The bartender indicated I could sit anywhere and brought me a menu. According to the reviews, the sweet tea and burgers were good. I ordered tea and the Smokehouse burger. The bartender/waitress brought my tea out in a 12 oz plastic cup, which is fine. But It tasted old! The tea wasn't good. Once I received my burger and fries, I was hopeful. However, it didn't meet my expectations. The fries were hot but plain and tasteless, with no seasoning or salt. The burger was disappointing. It was not good. It's small with no flavor. I covered it and requested the check. Be aware the waitress will automatically select 25% for a tip. She didn't come back to check if I needed anything or if the food was satisfactory. Customer service is everything! I had been a big fan of Voodoo Dog and was sad to see them go. Despite the name, Voodoo had excellent burgers. Having read a few reviews of Nelson's, I was keen to give it a try. I walked up today and with excellent weather decided to sit outside. Scott came out promptly and took my drink order. As each of the remaining three of our group sat down, Scott was quickly back out for their drinks. Our order came out very quickly and out cups never ran dry. Scott was very cheerful and an excellent server. My burger was as better than what I had gotten in the past at Voodoo. The coleslaw was the best I've had, very creamy and sweet.
