It's such a shame that the aquarium hobby has been squeezed out. It used to be a really fun... a DIY thing that you could do on a limited budget, and with a little education could achieve in a humane way, supporting the lives of the beautiful fishes on this earth. This establishment is pretty awesome on the surface. They have most of what any hobbyist could dream of, including saltwater reef, freshwater planted, and all the equipment needed to fulfill those dreams. Including a varied stock of unusual aquarium inhabitants. This is the only place in the South Bay you will ever find species that exist outside of the typical, mistreated and wholly pathetic commercial aquarium fishes trade. But unfortunately, elitist jerks run this establishment. Fueled by Silicon Valley money and motivated to suck your dollar right out of your paycheck, they are not friendly, not cool, and not anyplace I could recommend to anyone else. Everything is WAAAAAAY overpriced. @neptuneaquatics: if you're listening, you have enjoyed a lot of my disposable income. Keep driving your Jaguar convertible and overcharging naive patrons. But no more for me, thanks. And by the way, your inventory isn't even that great. You sold me a fish missing an eye and still charged me full price. But he's still alive and I love that little black phantom tetra. But other inventory has died off due to your negligence. You're such a farce, and I hope you are taken down but the fish live. So sad. Beautiful store with a variety of livestock. I don't recommend any newbies to make any purchase here, because it's kind of a rip-off place. I was swindled several times there when I just got into the aquarium hobby: - $5 for one dwarf water lettuce (basically free anywhere else) - $4 for one teaspoon of blackworms (I could get 4 or 5 times as much from Infinite Aquarium) - $24 for one electric ram ($13 at Infinite) - $100 for one piece of large spider woods (the same size and shape costs ~$50 at Aqualab Aquaria) Why is everything so expensive here? Anything sold here can be find somewhere else at half the price. Something else that bothers me is that I met several staff there that are not really experienced in fishkeeping themselves. Best local spot I've been to for fish and fish tank related needs. Great signage so it was easy to find and easy to know where to enter. Very clean and organized. There were a couple folks there to greet me and help me as soon as I walked in. They patiently answered all my questions and had a nice variety of plants and fish. The store associate Hayden was incredibly helpful in creating a 10 gallon saltwater nano reef tank bundle for us. He helped us choose which tank and walked us through choosing sand, lighting, water jugs, and rocks to use for the set up. The prices were reasonable and all of the staff were friendly. Whenever I want something new for my reef aquarium I always have to stop by Neptunes! They have a wonder selection of corals ranging from $10 frags up to $$$. They always have something I am intrested in! Along with corals they also have a ton of different types of fish and inverts as well! The shop is clean and has a gallery of tanks to help with inspiration! The only tid bit I have is sometimes their corals have hitch hikers that might cause problems in your aquarium. (This is why dipping and quarentining corals and fish is important!!) But if are careful and dip/quarentine, then it should be no problem at all! After more than a decade we've decided to downsize from our 250-gallon saltwater tank, as it's been a lot of hard work and dedication. Our core group of fish and corals enjoyed long and healthy lives, but now we are down to three fish and a shrimp (and lots of crabs and snails). The folks at Neptune Aquatics are extremely knowledgeable about this hobby and visiting their showroom is always so relaxing and motivating at the same time. I've gone to Neptune twice now, both times during COVID, and have been super impressed with their kind, knowledgeable staff and impressive display of quality items, supplies, and fish. I am a total newbie when it comes to fish, and both times I had people who were willing to stop what they were doing to answer all my questions, point things out, recommend great products, and overall just be very patient with me. I didn't feel talked down to or patronized even when I asked seemingly dumb questions (in hindsight) - they just seem to really love fish and enjoy teaching others how to love fish, too. The only piece of feedback I have is that, after getting home with my new tank, I realized that it was missing some plastic clasps to affix the lid to the tank. I wanted to just call and ask them about this, but they do not have a number listed on their website, as their phone line has been disconnected for some reason. Really poor customer service. I had to ask 3 people to help me out and none ever came they just said oh yea they can help you. I finally got someone to help me out with 1 coral. The corals and fish are beautiful but really bad customer service. As I was paying think i was going to pay $65 for a coral ends up to be $165???? I asked the worker the sticker on the glass said $65 why is it $165 he just said oh it's old pricing sticker. How is someone going to know it's an old pricing, they are going to think they are only paying $65 then at the register its $165. Ridiculous really need to update there pricing. read more

You don't have to wait long before someone ask if you need any help. The Yong Asian/Vietnamese dude, I didn't catch his name, was awesome. Price are set, can't really bargain with the staff but sometime they do have discount on their product. Make sure you talk to the owner for the correct pricing. New shipment may have higher pricing that are not marked and show up higher on checkout. Over all, one of the best aquarium store in San Jose, CA. Had my water tested here by Cerissa, the co-owner, and basically all my levels were horrible because of some crappy advice from another LFS. ( I won't mention who, but if you do some detective work with my reviews, you'll figure it out) She was down to earth and straight forward. She told me everything I needed to do to get back on track without insinuating to buy from her shop. She was very very very knowledgeable. Everything she suggested worked almost instantly. Each test cost $2 and she ran about 6, but didn't charge me anything. Maybe because I did end up buying everything she suggested from her shop. It's a bit of a drive to get here, but will definitely return. read more

They specialize in Saltwater fish but they do have freshwater as well. Robert is the head honcho there (slender Asian guy). I had some questions about my reef tank and he gave me some good advice... He didn't sell me on a bunch of unnecessary products. For saltwater aquariums this is one of three places you need to visit (the other two are Reef Raft and Aquatic Collection - both are saltwater only). I have also seen them be super rude 2) they have a massive selection of cheap coral! Cool!! But they over charge for anything good! So it was really helpful when I was learning. 3) they have alot of invertebrates snails shrimp cool! 4)All there salt water fish have ich 0.o and they will say its super healthy and over charge for them 5)they do have a really good selection of equipment witch is cool of you can't wait for it online, but like most things in this store its over priced. Been coming here 4 years or so. Staff is A+ and selection is deeps if they don't have what you're looking for they can get it. Not sure you can find anyone else with the knowledge and selection in the bay as them.. I'll admit haven't been toe every shop but have been to some. I come here for RO water was always seem to kill me fish when try and do on my own (tap with cleaner). The new location over the last 1.5yrs is more open, easier to navigate, parking is 100% better among with better tanks. My son comes along as he likes to check the fish out on display. My wife use to stay in the car as doesn't like the smell of fish tank/ fish store but in their new location she's game for hanging. This location is easy to get to (backroad), parking is easy, accessibility is simple, staff is A+ and so is selection. Enjoy. read more

UPDATE: I recently went to Neptune to find that many of their prices has gone up. An example would be panda corydoras for $10 up from $8 a few months ago. I understand that business is hard now due to COVID-19 but $10 for a panda Cory is just absurd considering many other stores are selling them for no more than $6.50. In addition, they were in very bad shape with many of them having fin issues. That price however would be justified if the store were to quarantine all fish they receive from the wholesalers like other fish stores do. PREVIOUS REVIEW: This place is very nice. Probably the best in the South Bay. They have both fresh and saltwater fish, and probably all the supplies you would ever need. They also sell lots of tanks/tank kits, rocks, substrate, coral, plants etc. Why 4 stars instead of 5: The place is very small and packed on weekends (you have to have patience to be helped) and the rocks they sell are overpriced. I believe it is $6 a pound which is kinda crazy. I truly think that they should lower the price since they buy it in bulk for way cheaper. However, according to one of the employees I talked to, all of the rocks passed their vinegar tests, and are thus inert. I guess this is partially why it's the price the way it is. read more

Nice place. Planted tanks are amazing. Neocardi shrimps are cheap here compared to others. No smell or humidity in the air like other aquatic stores. The fish here are kept in tip top shape and are healthy. A little expensive but overall, you get what you pay for. The low iron rimless tanks here are cheap and a great deal compared to online. Amano shrimps are babies for $5. A little pricey like I was saying but good place to learn and explore. read more

Great LFS. Both owners know what they are doing, and are very helpful. I spend almost 20-30 minutes talking to them every time I visit the store. Their Pricing is also very good. Every equipment or test kit I bought is priced similarly on Amazon.com, unlike I do not have to wait 2 days I just go to the store and buy it. Have bought more than 30 Fish, and 10 shrimps and they are all doing well. Don't go here if you actually need help. Some of the people working here are okay (hard to keep track of workers since it seems like a lot of them leave after a short period of time, not sure if that's true but every time I go in there is a new set of staff), but some of the main guys running the store don't know how to help customers. They'll laugh and be sarcastic with you for genuine questions. Cocky and smarta** people are who you'll find at this store. Love, love, love this place. This is the best aquatics shop I've been too from the South Bay to the Peninsula and Newark area. I go here mostly for their aquatic plants, but they also have a huge selection for both fresh and salt water pets. As with any mom and pop shop, prices are going to be much higher compared to commercial shops such as Petsmart and Petco. Let me tell you though, it's worth it! The livestock are the healthiest I've seen. Their tank set up in the freshwater section can also perform a 30% water change in 25 minutes.... I witnessed it! They also staff great employees with knowledge you can trust. read more

Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. I've been searching San Francisco for a top tier aquarium since I moved here 3 years. Today I broadened my search and made a 45 minute trek to Neptune's. I was BLOWN AWAY. I've never seen so many amazing display tanks. I've never seen so many excellent corals from the 9.99 mushrooms to an assortment of several hundred dollar showpiece corals. They even had a gem tang in stock which was neat to see. If you're a freshwater aquarist they have a respectable selection that is maintained VERY well. The freshwater aisle actually has several rare selections and a huge selection of flora. I can't wait to go back! read more

+UPDATE+ Just to let you all know this business IS NOT credited with the BBB (Better Business Bureao). I filed a complaint due to suffered damages and the BBB ruled in my favor after the many failed attempts that this company didn't respond to. I'm so sad about this place, and even sadder with the correspondence (or lack there of) of this business. I'm an experienced reef and marine fish keeper and have a wealth of knowledge in the hobby. I had purchased an anthias fish from Neptunes on Sunday Nov. 6. I acclimated the fish properly and placed her in my tank. By the next day the fish had died.The following day (day 3) my yellow tang of two years died, the following day (day 4) my Bangai Cardinal of 2 years died. ALL MY FISH ARE DIEING OFF ONE BY ONE. It's very unfortunate that this has happened to my established tank, and I'm very upset with this business for selling me an ill fish. I understand that things happen, but this ill anthias is literally killing my livestock. I hate to write such a brutally honest review, but this business has had the opportunity to contact me from my written request, and has chose not to. I contacted Neptunes with a written request via the website and still have yet to receive a reply. The staff is either very helpful or can't wait for you to leave. Some of the members will greet you with a smile while others will look at you as if you're the bane of their existence. I went in for advice on a new tank/filter I had bought from them and they man who "helped" me was absolutely no help. Wouldn't give me advice, didn't wanna hear about the tank I had bought nor the filter brand just told me to contact the manufacturer. He worked with salt water fish but couldn't find anyone there who worked with fresh water. He didn't even know the names of some of the fish. Stick to your expertise. Picked up some salt water essentials and plants for my salt water tank. A young gentlemen named James greeted and assisted me throughout my visit to Neptunes. James was very knowledgeable with salt water tanks and had great advice/suggestions on what to use and what not to use for certain types of scenarios. You can tell James was passionate about the aquarium culture. He was helping other patrons but would occasionally stop by to check up on me to see if I needed anything thing. You don't find this kind of service at most places where the staff has no idea about anything when you have questions that need answering. Horrible employee's. Straight punks who think they're too good to help. New to reefing and decided to check this place out on my lunch break. I was excited to ask some questions about the hobby and get some feedback on types of coral I should try to keep. Never got anyone to help me in 30 minutes of standing around. I was waiting and overheard a customer ask an employee if he could purchase a fish. The employee said verbatim "No I'm not going chase that fish for you" and walked away. I was shocked but I figured maybe they knew each other. That was the way friends talk. I figured it was just an off day for them so I left and decided to come back another day. I returned a few days later to buy some corals I had in mind. I got someone to help (reluctantly) and I began picking a few frags. I started to ask some questions and was immediately shut down and told "You need to know what you want before I start doing this I can't teach you about all of these". Needless to say I picked about 40 frags from 5 different tanks and waited until he bagged every single one before I changed my mind and walked out. That one felt really good. read more
