There's just something about coal-fired pizza that hits differently, and Zoni's definitely…read moredelivers. I recently visited the Sea Girt location and got to watch some of the behind-the-scenes action, including the pizzas being stretched, assembled and going in and out of that incredible coal-fired oven. Seeing the process up close really makes you appreciate the flavor that comes from cooking pizza this way. We started with several appetizers, including the coal-fired wings, which were delicious. I especially loved that they were served with onions, and their blue cheese dressing was seriously SO good. I could have kept dipping those wings all night. The strawberry spinach salad was another favorite -- loaded with strawberries, blueberries, feta and hazelnuts. The hazelnuts added such a great crunch and really elevated the salad. The calamari was crispy and delicious, and of course, a generous squeeze of fresh lemon made it even better. The eggplant rollatini was delicate, traditional and really well done. And then came the pizza. The crust was very thin and light, with a delicious sauce and that beautiful char you get from a coal-fired oven. There's a distinct flavor and texture that comes from coal firing, and it really made the pizza stand out. I think Zoni's is one of those places that people in the area should have on their radar. If you love pizza, especially a thin, beautifully charred crust, this is definitely worth checking out. Zoni's has two locations, Sea Girt and Middletown, so you have options depending on where you are in Monmouth County. Come hungry and order the wings, get the calamari, and definitely save room for the pizza!

The place was taken over six months ago. Their pizza is Brooklyn style, which is to me thinner crust, and fresh tomatoes. The dining room and the open kitchen seemed very clean.

On a Sunday for an early dinner, Lubrano's was the place to be. The restaurant was filled with…read morepatrons as early as 4pm, and for good reason - the portions are massive and the food was a hit. We stopped by Lubrano's after strolling the boardwalk wanting to avoid the greasy boardwalk eats. I wasn't expecting much since it just seemed like your standard pizzeria with a dining area, but I was surprised to learn the food offerings are elevated and done right. We came at an odd time, right in between lunch and dinner, but thankfully we're given the option to order off the lunch menu if we wanted. The lobster & crab bisque was one of the items on the lunch menu that I ordered - and the portion was MASSIVE. The flavor was there, but to my disappointment there were no signs of crab or lobster meat in this soup whatsoever, not even one chunk of meat. The appetizer salads given to every person who ordered an entree were a decent size, and the balsamic dressing packed a punch. I opted for the spicy rigatoni and once again, the portion size was healthy and the flavors were great. I tried some of the other dishes at the table, including the special of the day: monkfish, and all entrees were done well. It may have been an off day, but our waitress didn't seem too happy to serve us and would often cut us off mid sentence when ordering / asking a question. Often times she seemed irritated and short with the questions we asked regarding menu options, but I'll give Lubrano's the benefit of the doubt that this isn't their standard. Overall, this is a solid restaurant for Italian food and would definitely return when in the area!
