Both of them were incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely kind. They explained everything clearly, answered all of my questions, and never made me feel rushed. I've been coming to Ness Exotics for over a decade as they've always been the most experienced and reliable exotic vet in the Chicagoland area near the western suburbs (and I've tried them all!). My rabbit became very sick over the past few months and needed emergency care multiple times. Dr Ness was able to squeeze him in and went above and beyond to treat him. The vet support staff are wonderful and everyone provided him with such love and care (despite his ornery personality!). He unfortunately did not make it and Dr Ness and the staff provided such reverence for us during that process and allowed us to say goodbye to him. On Saturday, July 10th our 10 year old parakeet woke up breathing rapidly and was very puffed up. My wife called and asked if we could bring him in for a vet to see him? she was told no asked again if a vet would see our bird as an emergency.? After being on hold for a few minutes she was told that there were only two doctors there they were double booked could not take any emergencies. She was distraught. Shortly after she called I called and told them the situation again. I was put on hold for a few minutes and again told no. I was told we would probably have to go to Skokie. We live 3 miles from Ness and 60 miles from Skokie so I offered to pay triple the normal fees be there after the last appointment. Again I was told no. I then asked what would happen if I just walked in with our sick bird needs emergency care and was told that I would be turned away. This is our third bird that we have owned and have been going to Ness for over twelve years so needless to say my wife and I are very disappointed at what happened. We called around to several vets who see birds of course short staffed and overbooked Fortunately we found Midwest Exotics Animal Emergency in Elmwood Park. When I called them they also said they were short doctors and overbooked but since it is a respiratory problem bring him in and they would take care of us & they have done an outstanding job considering they have no history I understand that people have lives outside of work but in a potential life threatening situation where our bird was hospitalized put on oxygen etc we've been bumped out of our appointments due to people walking into Ness with sick animals didn't have an appointments because this was not even their regular vet you would think someone would be more understanding and make some exceptions. I was frantically looking for places to take my budgie back in February, and this was easily one of the most friendly locations I went to. They gave me a folder with tons of information on budgies for the appointment I went to. My bird ended up passing away due to a complicated cancer, and the staff here was very comforting during that time. They take the amount upfront for the appointment. In my case, the person taking the appointment made a mistake on their end. But, they now are not able to honor it and refusing to change the date. If i could give this place zero stars i would. These people are heartless and money hungry! My daughter who is homeless as well as low functioning AUTISTIC walked into this office when her emotional support animal fell very ill very quickly. In a sheer panic she went to the nearest vet without informing us. They checked vitals and temp. She was told that most likely the animal could not be saved. She was devestated. She was asked if they wanted to give fluids which she declined. They asked if she wanted the animal euthanized and she declined. As she was waiting the animal died. All this in under about a half hour time. They then handed her a bill for $230 with a typed note "sorry for your loss". $60 of which was for a euthanasia that she didnt authorize and didnt actually happen. When she tried to explain (after talking to me)that the $60 was not right and that she couldnt pay such a large bill they told her they would take off the 60 as if they did her a favor, and informed her she wasnt getting her dead animal back until she paid. In an attemp to help the situation, i called the vet. I explained the situation and told the vet my daughter is mentally diabled, she didnt understand what was happening and has $17 in her account due to her mental health issues and her being homeless. His IMMEDIATE response was "we have a business to run" . No empathy whatsoever. I tried to reason with him hoping that something could be ADJUSTED given the circumstances. He continued with rude comments like " do you work for free?"I explained that i do actually volunteer for a global childrens organization and so yes we do work for free at times. That seemed to annoy him even more. This man questioned why my daughter even has a pet. I answered that it was an emotional support pet. He also chastised me as a parent after he stated he would send the bill to a collection agency on my daughter. I told him "thats understandable so do that. She will learn from this mistake but for now she needs her animal and she needs to leave because she is scared but she will pay it" Then that didnt even appease him -his response was to question why i would do that to my daughter. I again explained she would learn from this experience and that bill would get paid. I apologized for his business and this situation. He did NOT care. Now really frustrated with his sheer callousness I asked him what he was going to do because my daughter was panicking and thought this guy was going to call the police on her. An autistic person thinking the cops were going to arrest her. HE DID NOT CARE. I then asked what his normal office visit price was because they really didnt do anything outside of what would have been done with an normal office visit. He refused to tell me the normal office visit cost! He said "she came in as an emergency and she was getting billed as such" and that "we just want his staff to work for nothing" That was not the case at all. We just needed to negotiate what was fair. They really didnt do anything for the animal to help it and definitely not $170 worth of care. He then yelled at me and said fine i will give her the animal and she can leave and he will make sure we never come back there. To which I agreed. To be honest my credit card was in hand. I was willing to pay the office visit but NOT willing to allow someone to rip off a disabled person. However note taken because we have a very close relationship with our local vets and animal rescues. But what this man doesnt know is that we have 3 dogs, two tropical birds, a carpet python, a leopard gecko and we have family in the area who have a exotic reptile breeding license that will hear about this. No problem at all sir- no problem at all. read more

When [John] Wayne, my bearded dragon, arrived in my life almost two years ago as a little baby, I was a nervous beardie mama. I did all the research I could, consulted with several resources, and did the best to give Wayne a lovely home and a good diet. Within weeks, all of Wayne's brothers and sisters (in other homes) had passed away but Wayne lived on. I knew I had to be doing something right, so I relaxed and worried less as he spent his time chasing crickets, digging in sand, and basking in the [fake] sun. After my cats has been to the vet a month ago, a fellow Yelper recommended Ness Exotic to me in case Wayne needed to go to the vet. I'm glad she did, because I ended up needing to take him recently! For days, Wayne wasn't eating or pooping and generally laying around like a sleepy bum. Odd. My husband called up Ness and booked me an appointment last Saturday. I put my dear Wayne in a shoe box and off we went on his first field trip! Walking into Ness Exotic Wellness Center was like walking into a pet spa. Warm, earthy colors decorated the spacious lobby, natural foods and toys were stocked on shelves, pictures of birds, ferrets, and reptiles adorned the walls, and everyone was wonderfully pleasant. I also learned that Ness provides various holistic and integrative therapies for exotic pets as well as cats & dogs. Love it! Because of the last-minute appointment, I didn't get to see Dr. Ness, but I did see Dr. Torres and he was wonderful. The vet techs/assistants were great too! Everyone was very knowledgable and I had never seen Wayne handled with such skill and compassion. It was fun watching Dr. Torres baby-talk to Wayne while Wayne was poked and examined. A radiograph was done and we found out what was wrong with him: he had accidentally ingested too much sand from his cage and was nearly impacted. Poor guy. He was given a shot of vitamins and some medicine (that I give to him daily). I'm proud of Wayne -- he handled everything quite well! Upon leaving, I was handed my bill ($260 -- yikes!) and a folder with a lot of information on taking care of bearded dragons. I thought that the $65 inital visit cost was a bit high, but then again, Wayne is considered an exotic animal and there aren't too many vets around for such animals. The folder of information was very helpful, too. Although I knew most of it, I did learn some things and make some changes (replaced the sand with reptile carpet, added warmer lights, etc.). Wayne seems to be doing a lot better now! Whew. He's awesome. So is this place. Highly recommended! read more

I DO NOT recommend! We have about 1.5 months w/ our cockatiel, our first pet which we took here because he was sick and while I understand why they may have the rule I did not know we had to bring him in a carrier cage. We walked in there and a very rude receptionist(purple short hair "lady", didnt get her name) starts yelling at us that we cant just bring our bird like this(under a blanket he is very calm) that there is a sign in the door n to just get in a room fast because we shouldn't be out here like that. It was dark out I didn't stop to look for signs nor did they advice me during appt process and we were the only ones in waiting room. Not what I expected of our first ever vet visit. Dr Ness was fine and the young lady that gave us the medicine at the end was very nice and sweet to our pet thats what I expected from everyone in a veterinarian office. Needless to say we will try elsewhere next time. No need to pay to get treated like a child. read more

They make money on gadgets and prey on you and your money and pet and when Ness cannot save them or cure them , him and Golan make them suffer so bad and let them linger on and offer no help and Golan really gets it all wrong and she should not be a vet and sued for malpractice, ask for Nye and his opinion always first he is brilliant and caring and compassionate and respects you and your pet and once brought a dying woman her bird in a hospital, all Ness and Golan care about is how much money they can make off of you, nye is the one that knows his stuff and could still do the surgeries and treatments he did for me even now and run rings around Ness and Golan! read more

I took my guinea pig here in April. The vet that handled my baby was amazing! She explained everything, what she was thinking, a different range of options to choose from and the prices. The girls that came out to grab him from my car were amazing. 100% would recommend!! They took such good care of him and were so attentive about following up with test results and checking in. My only issue was the rude lady at the front desk. When I called to explain the urgency of my situation she scolded me, as if I didn't know what I was talking about and I was an irresponsible pet owner because my guinea pig was sick. When I called the office to let them know I was there (COVID procedure) no one answered. I left a message and figured I would call back again in 2-3 minutes if someone didn't come out to grab Cooper. She calls me back being overly snippy with me because I left a message and "she wouldn't have checked until the next morning.". I tried to chalk to up to stress due to Covid until I tried to call to make a follow up appointment and got the same attitude. read more

Dr. Ness treated my 19 year old cat for inflammatory bowel with acupuncture, homeopathics, and chinese medicine - along with some nutritional support for over a half of a year. My boy, now departed, did so much better once we started seeing Dr. Ness. I only wish I had found Dr. Ness sooner, because I think my beloved pet would have had more of a fighting chance... Dr. Ness really listens, hears, understands, uses his intuition, respects my intuition, and allows me to participate in making decidions about my pet. The office environment is very soothing and the staff is wonderful. Dr. Ness is such a good soul - very compassionate and non-judgmental. He is caring and patient. My boy got such good love and care here. Unfortunately, most holistic naturpathic doctors, including Dr. Ness, don't prescribe meds or draw blood which means that I still have to return to a regualr vet for those services. My boy needed meds for thyroid and blood tests to ensure his kidneys and other functions were normal - along with his thyroid values. I wish this was a complementary medicine practice, but nevertheless, I trust and put my faith in Dr. Ness. read more

I could not possibly speak more highly of the staff at this facility. I consider myself truly lucky that when my very dear duckling Nugget fell ill, these were the people that I turned to. Every single doctor and staff member was incredibly sweet and gentle with both her and me, despite that I was often an emotional wreck. She had a very aggressive fungal infection that invaded both her nervous and respiratory systems, and thanks to the diligent care and the extensive knowledge of the doctors here, I was still able to give her a happy and comfortable life. Though I likely spent at least a few thousand dollars on her care over the course of a year and a half (I honestly stopped counting after a while), they were always very up-front about the costs and helped me find cheaper alternatives when possible. I worked with both Dr. Yang and Dr. Colbert for her treatments, and both were incredibly knowledgeable and exceptionally kind and gentle with her. Every single vet tech (especially Jessica) and receptionist was also quick to shower her in adoration, and Nugget would immediately perk up and cluck happily when she saw the building because she knew that cuddles and treats were inbound. When she finally did pass, they were incredibly comforting and they were quick to put my mind at ease. The quality of care provided here is well worth the price, and I know that any animal that I bring through the doors will be in excellent hands. read more

Not a Fan of this Place. I was told to go here because Dr Ness was "The Best" I brought my 6 yr old (at the time)Holland lop bunny in and was told he had an abscess and needed surgery. The doc kept showing me the X-ray and I just wasnt seeing it. I went elsewhere for a 2nd opinion and was told no abscess. My bunny lived to be 12yrs old with no symptoms or growth of a jaw abscess. read more

I was very unhappy with my visit. I saw the female doctor here, but do not recall her name. I took my bearded dragon in, who couldn't move her legs. The vet told me she was underweight and dehydrated and sent me home with a pamphlet on how to take care of bearded dragons. (I'm a zookeeper....) The vet said my dragon's legs were working fine even tho she was literally dragging them. I went for a second opinion at another facility and the new vet said her weight is fine (thank you!) and did a work up with x-rays and fluids and sent me home with a lot of information and meds. I'm very glad I didn't go back to Ness. They made me feel inadequate and gave no help. read more

Ness exotics is the best; they take great care of my bunny and I can always count on them to get to the bottom of what is going on with him. He had chronic GI issues from the time I got him as a baby. We tried a variety of things over the first few years we had him but he would always relapse. Once he started as a patient at Ness, he has been 100% better. The staff are very friendly and the office is clean and neat. Some people complain about cost but I truly believe it is worth every cent to get care I can trust. There are many vets who will "see" exotics, but only a handful exist who are actually skilled at diagnosing and treating them. Unfortunately, 10k of care (MRI and possible back surgery) for our doxie was out of our price range. Due to the amount of pain he was in we needed to find an alternative or put him down so as not to let him suffer. He is such a wonderful pup and losing him at such a young age would break our hearts. Consequently, we decided to give acupuncture a try. From the moment we entered the door, and every time since, the entire staff has been supportive and kind. They fuss over him and treat him like he is the most adorable pup they've ever seen. To us, he is so who wouldn't love that? Dr. Golan worked with us to set up a multi-prong treatment plan. Acupuncture, cold laser therapy, herbal supplements all working together to promote healing. She's gentle with him and remembers what makes him fussy. She calms him if he starts to get agitated. When she first cared for him, she gave him a kiss on his noggin and we were sold. We want someone treating him who truly loves animals and that's what we get. Danielle gives him cold laser therapy treatments. She massages the laser into his pain points and talks soothingly to him. He visibly relaxes in her care to the point of almost falling asleep. Nothing puts your heart at ease quicker than seeing the pain drain from him. Fast forward 5 weeks, and we have our pup back! He is no longer in pain! We have to limit his activity as he continues to heal but what a small price to pay to keep our little guy happy & healthy. We will always be grateful to Dr Golan, Danielle and the entire staff for giving us back our little Arancini. read more

This place and all the staff are WONDERFUL and SO UNDERSTANDING! I rescued a bearded dragon and brought him here. This was my first encounter with this WONDERFUL place. Buddy had a cyst that needed to be removed. Unfortunately when Dr. Ness went in he found that the cyst was a very aggressive cancer. He called me personally from surgery to tell me what was going on and gave me several options to choose from. I called my husband and we discussed what was best for Buddy. So I called back and was immediately transferred to the surgery room where Buddy, Dr. Ness, Kevin and other staff memebers were still working to try and save Buddy. After speaking with Dr. Ness and Kevin in the surgery room, we decided to out Buddy down. As his cancer would only come back and most likely sooner than later. When I went to pick Buddy up so we could bury him. The woman (sorry I don't remember her name) came out with Buddy and they had placed him in a box and decorated the box with his name on it and a picture of a bearded dragon. I was so overwhelmed with kindness from everyone there. Today I recieved a sympathy card from them with wonderful words of sorrow and sympathy. Was told when I made the appointment that the first acupuncture appointment/exam for my dog was going to be $175 which had to be paid in advance and after that it was $60 per session. However, I was mislead about the $175 because I was then charged an additional $60 after the appointment "for the acupuncture." Poor communication by the front desk staff because honestly I already thought $175 was quite steep for acupuncture. I will just stick with my regular vet because I don't need to be nickeled and dimed for something that was extra but not at all mandatory to make my dog a little more comfortable. There are very few exotic animal vets in the Western suburbs. Unfortunately, I can only recommend Ness as a back-up "last resort" option, and with a few caveats. You need to be an educated and informed exotic pet parent, and maintain your vigilance and criticality when dealing with the staff at Ness. Pricing is out of control, and I come away feeling that their primary goal is not the health and wellbeing of your beloved family pet, but to pad their bill by up-selling you unnecessary treatments, procedures, tests, and pseudo-science mumbo-jumbo (the mark-up on that crap is astronomical - it's pure profit). Holistic treatment is one thing, but they will hard sell you homeopathic / Oriental herb nonsense, even and especially when you're at your most vulnerable. I'm honestly surprised healing crystals weren't thrown at us as an option. They are opportunistic, and will take advantage of your beleaguered state - stressing over the failing health of your beloved fury child. And you MUST be extra attentive to any "prescriptions" they write for your pet, especially when they try to fill them in-house. Ness billed us $18 for some Bene-Bac Plus (a probiotic), which can be purchased over the counter anywhere else for between $5 - $6 ($5.99 at Chewy.com). They charged us TRIPLE what it should cost! The staff at the front desk is very poor at communication, and you'll likely end up playing phone tag for days if trying to make a follow up call to your particular vet at Ness. Even the paperwork is needlessly confusing - with dosages on the aftercare instructions laid out in a hard to follow format. Do yourself, your pet, and your wallet a favor and look elsewhere. read more

We didn't even get a chance to visit this vet because when my husband called about our sick rat they refused to see him because they weren't our regular vet. Well, we didn't know our regular vet doesn't have an exotic specialist on staff all the time! How would we know until we actually needed help? Furthermore, had we been treated with even a sliver of concern this place could have become our regular vet. Now we have found Northwest Exotic who treated us wonderfully and saw our baby the same day. They are now our regular vet. Way to go Ness!
