TLDR - Old school HK cafe that offers a big selection. Food 3 stars, value/portion +1 star, diner friendliness +0.5 star. Total 4.5 stars. It is rare to find an Asian diner that offers a level of friendliness and chit chatting that completely compensates the food. You know "as seen on TV" or "as heard on radio show". Sugar Sweet gave me that on my first visit during afternoon-tea-special time. For that alone it worths a repeat visit. We arrived for dinner a few weeks later. I ordered my "test dish" for HK cafes that offered baked dishes. The Pork Chop Baked Rice was very good: very big portion for the price, bold and creamy sauce, lot of cheese, large piece of pork chops, seasoned rice. The cook went through the trouble of making seasoned rice for the baked dishes. So many rivalry HK cafes just use white rice. The chef took his baked dishes so seriously that they were a level better than many competitors, if you could look pass the rundown venue. HK cafes are in truth layman diners. Flavourful food, good portion, good value and friendliness is the magic formula, expensive ingredients uncalled for. Sugar Sweet Cafe gets the formula right.
I actually like this place, the food is decent, the price is right. But the place is too dirty. There have been times when the ceiling would leak water onto customers, and then there are always flies flying around. We can forgive all of that, but when you find a dead fly in your food, it's too much...that problem is compounded by the staff that try to argue with you about food hygiene. Literally had to show them the fly and took a picture before they could take it away as evidence of this. The way they manage this after the fact is poor, having to argue with staff and then having them fix the bill. Not like we're expecting a comp like in other restaurants, that is not how a chinese place runs, but at least acknowledge the issue, no apologies or anything was given. Had to fight to get the item removed from our bill after that experience.
It was edible. The food. I personally ordered a J7 (Sizzling Hot Plate Sirloin Steak) with garlic sauce (+$0.50) at a medium rare; in HK cafe's you usually say a number in rarity/degree of doneness so in this case I asked for 4 out of 10 for Med Rare. It came well done (so a 10), completely cooked which may be attributed to the fact that at this cafe they add the hot sizzling sauce IN the kitchen rather than doing it table side as most establishments have chosen. The service is quick and efficient and the ambiance is a quiet cozy cafe unless it's packed then the loudness is to be expected with many patrons.
Singapore Noodles are my main go-to here! Very affordable prices and quick service! Also a great place to grab a quick breakfast.
Came in at prime dinner hour on Friday night. Restaurant is full but the wait is not long, however the noise level is loud! Looking at the volume of customers, you'll think it's a very tasty place to eat. The noise from a pack restaurant I can with stand, been to noisier restaurant. However what is less tolerable is the quality of food... This used to be an OK HK restaurant before COVID, today the food has gone down hill. The portion of Carb (rice/noodle) is still big, but the meat has been scaled back. And the choice of cut (or grade of meat) is not good. But Pork chop and chicken cutlets we've ordered is tough and dry, I don't think it's a case of a bad chief. Should really be a 2.5 star rating, but they do include a milk pudding with mango puree along with their meal. So I rounded it up to 3 star
They used to be good a great place to eat but now they are legit penny pinching on everything. I understand if I do a take out order they charge me for the container... that I get it ... But when I'm dining in and ordering cutlet pork chop with rice... they are charging me to put the sauce on the side... not asking for EXTRA SAUCE... But sauce on the side... they wanna charge me 50 cents. This place is going downhill like you wouldn't believe... no wonder there are no cars and the place is extremely empty. I've been a loyal customer for years at this establishment and today is the last day.
Haven't been here in a long time, but glad to see the food is still the same. Like any good HK cafe, the service will be iffy and sarcastic, but people will come back anyway. Ordered the Baked Pork Chop Rice. Can't go wrong with this classic. Nicely baked, with some melted cheese on top. The pock chop is tasty, but maybe a little fatty. There's a good amount of the tomato sauce and a decent fried rice underneath. Milk tea here is not bad either.
Bang for the buck! The signature baked pork chop with rice is a must order. I've been here a couple of times and this never disappoints. The portion is huge and there is plenty of pork chop pieces already cut for you, not to mention lots of cheese top top, too. This can actually be shared among 2-3 ppl if you order one more rice/noodles to enjoy together. Also, this is on the menu where it includes a soup and drink! Highly recommended!
Bought two dinner combo- baked pork chop with tomato and cheese , underneath is egg fried rice ., pork chop was tender and thick cut, come with a choice of drink or soup ! Another combo is Hainan Chicken rice- chicken was tender and moist, different kind of rice texture compared with the pork chop rice . Also comes with choice of soup or drink They both are fair potion , particularly for $8.99+tax ! Definitely worth it to go back and try different dish !
Would be 4 stars at least if we didn't find a fly/bug if the fried rice. Great value for lunch special which includes a main, soup, and a drink. They replaced the fried rice with a dish of equal value without a formal apology or discount. Will probably be back since my parents are fans of Hong Kong cafes and will say the bug was just extra protein, but I feel a bit more sour about it. My go to drink is hot hk style milk tea and the soup is the Russian borscht!
Sugar sweet is a standard HK style cafe with an extensive menu that cycles for each day of the week. I tried their spicy Spanish Seafood rice which was a-ok but I think they should leave out the spicy and Spanish description. This dish was definitely not spicy at all and the only aspect of this rice bring Spanish was a lone olive segment otherwise it would have been great as a baked tomato sauce seafood rice and I would be definitely more satisfied. The meal is accompanied with your choice of Chinese soup and a hot drink (hot coffee/ tea no extra charge). The soup was a little on the small side and the tea was a on the weaker spectrum. In a pinch this cafe is good to go but not to impress any relatives/ friends from HK craving that authentic taste

With a huge menu to choose from and relatively cheap prices, you can eat here for any meals of the day. The baked pork chop was tender and it came with a drink, soup and dessert for only $8.99. The sizzling plate included a beef steak, chicken steak, pork steak, sausage, chicken wing and a side of rice/pasta. Like most cha chaan teng, come for the food and not for the service/environment and you won't be disappointed. Pros: Great portions Food prepared well Cons: Non booth seats are tight Been to Sugar Sweet Cafe in the past but keep forgetting to review this place. Sugar Sweet is another quintessential HK style cafe. The food is good, the prices are fair and the portions are great. Located in a small plaza with an independent gas station, it's unassuming and pretty well known among the locals of the area. This place is super busy during peak times. Expect to wait a little if you come in at that time. Sugar Sweet fits as many tables and booths as it possibly can into its location. The booths are fine space wise. If your sitting at the tables though, expect to be crammed a little bit. The aisles are also a tight fit and with the servers flying all over the place, it can get pretty crazy. Sugar Sweet has a pretty extensive menu to pick from. They have everything you would expect at a HK style cafe. They have multiple specials throughout the day that come with an entree, soup and a drink. These specials are priced very well if you ask me. There are multiple specials to choose from under $10. As you can see from my pictures, we got 3 entrees during our visit. My pork entree with Portuguese sauce on rice was great. The sauce was done really well. When it comes to HK style cafes, you can't tell a curry from a Portuguese sauce. It almost looks the same. The Portuguese sauce should be much lighter in colour from a curry. This place got it right and it was down right tasty. My wife's baked spaghetti was also done very well. Presentation was excellent as well. The portion sizes here are great for what you pay. It's been like this for as long as I can remember. There was another patron sitting at a table beside me who got a rice dish. His dish was enormous. You get good value here. Also, I notice the cups they use for their cold drinks here are larger than usual. You win everywhere here. Sugar Sweet has always been one of my favourite spots in the city. Surprised it's taken me this long to review it. It could use a bit more space but other than that, it's an awesome spot for your HK style cafe needs!
2 of us went to this restaurant last week, Sugar Sweet Cafe is best known for its signature baked pork chop rice with rich tomato sauce and tender pork chop, which many customers highly recommend. Their stir-fried pork neck rice noodles are also tasty with large portions. The prices are reasonable, quite authentic Hong Kong Style food and portions are generous, making it good value. However, tried the Hainanese chicken dish earlier and feels like is a less popular dish. Worth to try! Let me know what are yr fav dishes! read more
One of the cafes that I would consider eating at if I'm in the area. The prices are pretty good and reasonable compared to other HK cafes. They have a variety of dishes available. I came to have breakfast on a Monday. I ordered the instant noodle with satay beef soup, it came with a drink so I got a hot milk tea. The meal was pretty filling. The beef was very tender and tasty. It certainly satisfied my craving. read more

I actually like this place, the food is decent, the price is right. But the place is too dirty. Sugar Sweet has become one of my recent favourites. I found this place over the summer and has now become part of my daily life lol. I like it because (1) it's my fave cuisine, HK style (2) big portions at a reasonable price (3) wide variety of menu options (4) sets come with soup & drink (5) milk tea is good (strong) (6) quick & simple. I can't really recommend anything in particular because everything on the menu is a HK staple, you can't really go wrong. Special mention to their curry dishes - many people seem to come here for those. It gets quite packed here during peak hours doing local business. You'll see a mix of solo eaters to families in the after-school hours. It's the typical straight-forward "get things done" HK service, so don't expect much hospitality, although I already think they are nicer than most. You'll be full for sure. A lot of the time I even see the locals bring their Tupperware to take home extras. A very practical place, just the way I like it. read more
Giving this 2 stars because of service manners. The wifi here is called "y-5". Because it sounds like Wi-Fi? Ha... The food here is pretty good. 6 of us came for breakfast. This area has fairly inexpensive compared to the heart of Markham. I got H under the breakfast menu which is beef brisket soup. I substituted the vermicelli for instant noodles. So good. The pieces are really fatty...eat the meat and throw out the fat! The fat makes the soup yummy, but don't clog your pipes! The satay noodles and satay macaroni here is not good. I definitely recommend beef brisket. My noodles were better than everyone else's . I also tried the French toast with peanut butter. Very well done. It tastes just like a traditional breakfast in HK. The milk tea was very rich. The bathroom was bigger than I expected because the seating area was very tight, but the bathroom was spacious. Lots of parking and a gas station outside. read more

(lunch menu comes in with soup and hot drink) - The baked pork chop rice is a must-order item: pork chop is in thick cut and it's tender/ good amount of sauce & cheese on top/ the egg fried rice is well done/ pork chops are already cut when served/ huge portion - Fried rice with Chinese dry meat and taro is good: taro is well cooked and taste real great/ again, well done egg fried rice! Chewy but not oily, yum!/ dry meat is not bad but not impressed - Hot Drinks: we ordered the hot milk tea and the hot coffee with tea (also call Yuenyeung in CANTO!) and they both taste sooo good! Silky milk with good tea will never do you wrong! I'll say it is a good place to grab lunch but might not be your best choice if you wanted to have a leisure lunch with lots of chatting coz they capacity is low and the place is never empty. Anyway, go give it a try! - 價錢超超超值!! (特價午餐有包餐湯、飯和熱飲) - 金牌焗豬排飯出色: 豬排有厚度但不會乾/ 芝士和醬汁份量足、夠惹味/ 炒飯底乾爽/ 豬排是碎上不用自己動手切/ 飯量足 - 臘味香芋炒飯好吃: 芋頭有處理過，很香/ 炒飯粒粒分明、乾爽不油膩/ 臘腸有油香 - 餐茶香滑: 點了熱奶茶和熱鴛鴦，奶很香很滑，茶濃度剛剛好，好喝! 總體來說就是平靚正又超級飽肚! 可是他們客人還蠻多的，客人一般都不會坐太久，吃飽就會離開了。是個吃午餐的好地方，但如果要和友人聊聊天邊吃飯的話恐怕就不太合適了。 read more
I've been on a roll with Hong Kong style cafes recently and today decided to step into popular local spot at the Scarborough/Markham border. Despite sounding like a dessert bubble tea joint, Sugar Sweet Cafe serves some pretty mean Hong Kong as well as classic Cantonese fare at a great price. For less than $10, you can a great afternoon set meal that includes an entree, soup and a drink. Cheap, fast and filling? Count me in!! From classic staples such baked pork chops, Portuguese Chicken on rice, noodles etc.. the menu is very extensive and the portions generous and tasty. There is also a breakfast and dinner menu as well that will satisfy all your hunger pangs. I know it did for me! Service is quick and abrupt, nothing pretentious just like what a HK style should be. Solid 4/5 for some awesome HK classics! Great job! read more

3.5* because we found a piece of hair in one of our dishes! This cafe is located in a tiny plaza with the gas station and some dessert/bakery shops. There is a good amount of parking in this plaza here but I can see it getting packed in the evening. There's definitely parking nearby on residential streets if you really can't find parking. It was quite full when we went there on a Wednesday afternoon at 1pm, but luckily, we were able to get a seat right away. The people there were very fast as they came over expecting to take our orders right away, though we definitely needed a lot of time as there were just a lot of menus to browse through (e.g., Christmas/New Years specials, lunch special, breakfast specials, regular menu). We ordered two dishes from the lunch special menu to share that day: 1) Based pork chop w/ Tomato Sauce & Cheese ($8.50): It was delicious! It wasn't salty at all and I liked that it was a little sour from the tomato sauce. The pork chop was great and tender. The hot milk tea that came with the combo was more on the tea side and did not have enough milk. The black tea was strong! The Russian Borscht was quite sour which I loved! 2) Baked chicken with cream sauce ($7.99): It came out very nice but when we started to dig in, we found a piece of hair in it!! We quickly called the waitress over. She apologized and told us to pick another dish. EWWW! 3) We ordered baked fish fillet with cream sauce ($8.99) after the hair incident. The dish came out piping hot. But what shocked me was that the fillet was quite thick! It was lightly coated with breadcrumbs, drowned in cream and cheesy sauce. Overall, this dish was alright mainly because there wasn't much taste to the sauce. We asked for the chinese soup to come with this dish and it was VERY good. I don't usually drink Chinese soup but this one tasted very nutritious and I loved that it came out super hot! The portion size is quite large, so be prepared to pack some home! Overall the service was good - just like any HK style cafes in the area. They were fast (probably because they want to get customers in and out of the restaurants as fast as possible) and they didn't feel bothered when we asked for the dish to be changed. Before we left, the same waitress apologized for the piece of hair once more which I appreciated. Everyone makes mistakes but I liked that owned up to their mistake. read more
My friend recommended this place for a while and I finally had a chance to try! I came here for dinner. The place wasn't too busy so we got seated immediately. The menu was placed on the side so it was easily accessible. There were a lot of options to choose from so it took a while before we could make a decision. We decided to try their baked fish fillet with spicy tomato sauce and baked ox-tongue with Portuguese sauce from the "Chef's Recommendation". As we were ordering, the waitress let us know our order included a drink, a soup and a DESSERT! Can't say NO to dessert :D! The only suggestion I would make is that they should clearly state the included items on the menu so customers can make clear decisions before ordering. Also, it was nice for them to let us modify the order. My boyfriend was able to change his order from Portuguese sauce to tomato and I changed mine to spaghetti instead of rice. We decided to try their pork bone soup with corn (soup of the day) and hot & sour soup and for drinks we ordered the lemon iced tea (additional $1) and HK milk tea. The soup was pretty good and the drinks were decent. The OX tongue dish came quickly. However, the baked fish fillet took some time to arrive but the wait was totally worth it! The fish fillet was thick & flaky! It was lightly battered and baked perfectly! The tomato sauce along with the crispy layered fish harmonized your taste buds ^^. I wished the sauce was a little bit spicier. On the menu it say "spicy" and the spice level was pretty much non-existent =.=" Now for the dessert round. We selected the mango and the milk pudding. They both had intense mango flavour and the puddings had a smooth consistency. The price for our meal was a steal. It cost around $20 for everything we had! This is one of my family's go to places for HK style food, been coming here for years. Why we come here? Well because they have good food at very good prices. We usually come during lunch time on weekend there most likely going to be a wait. They have all day breakfast specials, lunch specials and dinner specials. There menu is large they have soup noodles, stir fry, baked dishes, regular traditional dishes and even sandwiches. I have tried a large selection of their lunch and dinner specials and there all very good. All lunch and dinner specials set meal comes with the entree, soup and a drink all for under $10 except for maybe a few dinner dishes. Besides the specials you can order off the menu. Solid HK style cafe. It's been a mainstay for whenever I crave a HK style meal. The baked chicken with spinach cream sauce is my favourite. I've probably had this dish a dozen of times. They top it off with cheese and the dish comes on a baking dish that's piping hot. I like that they use fried rice as the base instead of just plain white rice. It definitely adds to the flavour. Enjoy with an iced tea and it's the perfect combo. Service could be better but you don't really come to places like this for service. read more
First off. Who is the duke of this place. I have 17 check ins and I'm still only 6th in check ins here. Someone must be living here and checking in everyday. Anyways. This is an update after coming here on the regular at least twice a week. The food here has been consistently good and just great bang for your buck. Cheap and delicious. Where else can you get a set dinner 3 course meal. For about 11-12 bucks out the door? Comes with a drink too. A bonus is one time I forgot my iphone and they kept it for me. When I went to pick it up they even verified I was the right person by telling me to call the phone before returning it. Quite honest owner. Tip: sometimes you have to ask for dessert. This is probably my favourite Hong Kong style cafe at the moment. As a frequently traveller to Hong Kong. I could not find a place that brings me memory of Hong Kong cafes and the same quality. Until now. Baked porkchops (5/5) The baked porkchops rice was the best I ever had. Better than the one in Hong Kong. Definitely their signature dish. Pork chop was crispy, the sauce was muli-layered. It goes beyond your typical Portuguese sauce. I'm estatic for my friend to bring me to this hidden gem. read more
I've been eating at sugar sweet cafe for many years and it use to be my favourite tsa tsan tang. Recently, I think the pork cutlets are slowly getting smaller... and it is no longer a part of the get a free drink and soup deal. I think what changed my mind completely about coming here more often was this one time, me and 3 other friends decided to eat some spaghetti meat sauce. The waitress was extremely rude that day and our food took more than an hour to arrive. I remember we asked for water so she grabbed all our teas roughly and slammed our water on the table. Noticeably upset that we asked for water. It just wasn't cool, and we felt very mistreated. I want to give this place a 2 star but my recent visit was Gucci, except how the pork cutlet shrunk by 3". read more

Their name always made me think it is a dessert place. But it's not. It is a typical HK style cafe. Came here on Monday morning for breakfast. Service are average. Prices are fair. Food quality are ok with generous portion. read more

Very basic hk style cafe. Small little cafe with not many tables, seats approximately 30ish people. I find that people come here because its not as busy as other places and for the price point. Not necessarily the quality of the food. My chicken steak rice meal just tasted like someone heated up left overs. Nothing fancy at all.. i give this 2.5 stars and 2.5 / 5 for washrooms read more

Came here Friday night and there was a little bit of a wait. I like their menu there is so much to choose from and price very reasonable set meals comes with soup and tea or coffee had to get the baked pork chop rice it tasted amazing but have 2 complaints, not hot enough and the porkchop was pretty fatty would have liked it more lean. The other dish was pig neck stir fry hor fun this was much hotter and not to oily, the taste was really good, the pork was also good would order this again. Definitely will come back for more. read more

Sugar Sweet Cafe This Hong Kong Style's Cafe name in English and it's Chinese name "Octopus" might both be disappointing to some... If you looking for Sugar Sweet's dessert? you definitely be disappointed..as the menu feature exclusively Hong Kong Style's restaurant selections ... If you looking for specialized octopus cuisine... (live octopus? Takoyaki?) I don't see that on the menu either... Wednesday's afternoon tea time in Scarborough... this place was packed, these people must know something I don't.. since this is the first time I come here!! Waitress suggested not to order any wonton or dumpling noodles as it would take forever for the food arrive. forever is NOT 5 min.. is 15 minute.. so Skip that! Since one go to Cafe of this type is for fast food!!! Preserved Vegetable Pork Vermicelli ($4.25) and Beef Briskets Rice Noodle ($4.50) with drinks were both A-OK. Portion size is big..Not too often when my yelp buddy would comment that "Hey! This is a lot of Noodle!" So come to Sugar Sweet Cafe if you want to have something affordable, decently tasty and fast!! read more

A small chinese cafe thats hidden in a small plaza along steeles ave e. Its a pretty traditional chinese cafe thats very small and has very limited seats. Breakfast and lunch time can yield 15-20 minute waits. The food is pretty cheap and the portions are pretty good for the price. The food comes pretty quickly and the servers are attentive and respond pretty quickly. Come here quite often for breakfast or tea time, as they have a deal where it comes with a drink for a cheap price. read more
