A water pipe broke on MLK Day in which I needed to shut the water off. The plumber I have been using for years came out the next day and said they didn't have the man power help me. The pipe was enclosed in concrete on which the washer and dryer sat. Plus, I have a concrete footing they would have needed to navigate around to reroute the pipe. The second plumber quoted me $6,200 which included going around the footing (to avoid tearing into the concrete floor) and opening one of the walls, approximately two feet, to reroute the pipe. Repairing the walls was excluded from the $6,200. A third plumber's solution was to open two walls and the ceiling to reroute the pipe up and over. That was a non-starter. I found New Design Plumbing (NDP) from a friend who's also a general contractor. The sent two people out who crawled underneath house and took pictures and video. The next morning, Thursday, Juan arrived to verify the pictures/video from they day before and to take a look for himself. NDP ended up going around the footing and up threw the washer/dryer wall but, they made a small hole for a new fixture vs. tearing the wall open. Because of their schedule, the work was going to happen four days later but, two members of the crew were able to come earlier. All told, they were there about six hours and finished on Thursday for a fraction of the cost. The plumbing company we've been using for years I'm going to set aside and start using NDP. I've used their services once and they were affordable and swift. Their contact came as a recommendation from my landlord who said their previous tenant recommended this service. The reason for 3 less stars is because I don't think they're as thorough as they ought to be, and because of that, my partner and I could've been in serious trouble. They checked on my water heater back in June/July and they 'fixed' the issue by turning the knob from 'warm' to 'hot'. They were in and out within 5 minutes. Granted, I know nothing about water heaters so I trusted that them when they said nothing else is wrong. They are, after all, the 'experts'. Fast forward to end of December, my water heater stops working in the middle of the night. My partner goes to check on the heater and finds a small flame. Thankfully he extinguishes it before it blew up (literally it could've - it's a gas heater). We called an emergency plumber immediately. The dude comes and inspects the water heater and quickly finds out that it hasn't been replaced in 20+ years! A water heater's lifespan is about 10-15 years. Sure, a part of this issue is that the landlord and the previous tenant did not do their part in swapping out the water heater earlier. But the other part of the issue is that the plumbers from this company who came to check on my water heater did not notice this HUGE piece of information, and if they did, they did tell me about it. So while this company was swift and afforable, ask more questions than I did in 5 mins and be more thorough in your questioning than they are in their process. read more

I had a leak in my clean water line between my meter and the riser into my home. Two other plumbing companies (from the Glendora area) I received estimates from, quoted me $3800 and $5500. Both insisted the leak was under my driveway apron and said it would be a waste of time to dig in the landscape around the riser when the leak was under the concrete. Assumed a woman would not know any different. New Design's Mario came out on Thursday August 8, agreed the leak was under the landscape, scheduled two plumbers, Ivan and Christian, to come out 8:00 am today, August 9. In 2.5 hours, the hole was dug, the line repaired with metal piping (not like the original PVC pipe), and I had water back on. My bill will be less than $700. I am a landlord/owner and knew most probably that the 16 year old tankless would have to be replace when it started acting up a second time in a year. Per our realtor's recommendation, we used New Design for several small jobs in a rental condo we were leasing out for several years. Once we moved into that condo, it was obvious we had to replace and enlarge our patio. Taking things in sequence -- since I had no gas stub in the back yard for my BBQ and smoker grill -- I had to have a natural gas line run before the patio was laid, or never have one. Our patio contractor recommended his plumber , however when that bid came in it was well over $1000. We then chose to call New Design for a comparison. Juan came out and returned an estimate well BELOW $1000. I wondered why the extreme difference? Would the quality of the work be the same? We chose New Design based on our previous experience, plus truthfully the reviews, and the project pictures on their website. They scheduled the work within two days of our acceptance, showing up at 9AM. The mandatory 18" trench was dug quickly by a specialized power trencher. Quality materials to code were employed, and the fittings were attached quickly and cleanly. ( Note: I learned the yellow wire run parallel to the pipe was not for grounding, but a tracing wire. Should the piping not be located underground, the wire is energized which then can be located with a special sensor unit.) The whole job was completed by 3PM. Overall I am SO impressed with the quality of the work and materials -- that far exceeded my expectations! Our next projects include 2 bathrooms and kitchen remodeling. I have been a customer since they started their business for various different needs. However, on a Sunday morning I woke to a leak between floors and it progressed throughout the day. I phoned New Design to leave a message that it was an emergency and could someone come Monday morning. They had 2 plumbers at our house by 9am Monday morning and they were able to find the pinhole leak in a pipe and repair it so we did not suffer anymore damage and possible mold in the walls. I've always used these guys since Jim from Jim's Pasadena Plumbing move up north. Juan and Mario worked for Jim. Had a bad experience when Mario came to my home to fix a few very minor problems - fix leaking faucet, install a new faucet, repair shower hot water valve. Mario arrived with has helper. They had to go get a part at noon. They came back an hour and a half later and installed the part. All was good until I received the invoice. The invoice stated that I was charged for the full hour and a half they were gone (getting the part and having lunch!). I was also charged the normal $94 an hour, but also charged $60 an hour for the helper. I've never had to pay for the helper in the past! This was big time price gauging! Putting my trust in these guys in question. Beware of price gauging! read more

Our sink drain was clogged on a friday evening. And after trying to resolve the issue, my boyfriend and I decided to call New Design Plumbing. (We noticed that they received good reviews). We called around 4:30pm on friday, thinking we would have to wait a day or two and pay a premium for weekend work. But they were able to accommodate us and send someone within the hour. Juan and Mario, formerly longtime (EXCELLENT) plumbers at now-defunct Jim's Plumbing, have opened "New Design Plumbing". I had used Jim's Plumbing for over twenty years, and had these guys doing repairs at my house for over ten. I called Mario this morning to check a leak that was making a pond outside the house. He said he would be by between 2 and 4 today. The Water and Power emergency person had shut off my water last night. Twenty minutes after I had made arrangements with Mario, he called me,to say that he had had a cancellation, and he could come over right away. He promptly saw the problem, disconnected the damaged pipe, connected the water back to the house and gave me an estimate for repairs. Since the rotted piped connected to the sprinklers, he proceeded to advice that I water by hand, and decide when I want to do the repairs, since they would run probably $400.00 or so. I used Jim's Pasadena Plumbing ever since we bought this house and had to re-pipe it, so I was a bit at sea when he retired. So I asked my neighbor for a recommendation, and she told me that two of Jim's guys were now in business on their own. I called Mario who set me up with an appointment for the next week. In less than an hour, he and his helper had fixed problems with one sprinkler valve and one bathtub, then addressed an issue with the shower upstairs as well. Parts and labor were quite reasonable.
