I really liked this place. Really fun little layout, loved all the wood in the decor. Service was attentive while not being overbearing. Glass was always filled with water and server checked on our meal at least 3 times. Miso soup was pretty good. Edamame was simply delicious. Ordered the Sashimi entree, wicked good, especially the eel with avocado. Tad expensive but, worthwhile if you want some good sushi. In closing, I'll be going back. read more

Their Polynesian cocktails are on point, the hostess and wait staff are friendly and prompt, and the food would have me coming back even if the first two aspects weren't ideal. This warm fine restaurant provides the quintessential Asian restaurant experience, and I'm thrilled to live nearby enough to frequent it. Try the ebi-mango maki and the Ginger Rita cocktail! Throwing in my two cents on another sushi bar, my FIRST sushi experience ever actually. Decor: It's very cute and pleasant and wanna-be Japanese. Dimly lit too so a good date place. Food: Big rolls and big pieces of fish. It was fresh too. No complaints here. My boyfriend, who hates fish raw or otherwise, had a noodle bowl with tempura in it which was also large and he claimed very tasty. I thought it was great and delicious with a lovely presentation. Price: Yeah it was slightly expensive but come on, it's sushi. Cheap sushi sounds sketch to me. I'd rather pay a little more then get sick and eat bad raw fish. It wasn't as bad as Fugakyu. Parking: SUCKS. We had to park down the street and then walk to the place. Annoying and since it's in Watertown it's not as if there is any good public transportation to be had (the crap bus does not count). Overall: Great fresh sushi if you are in the area. If you have ever chewed on a rubber band, pencil eraser, condom...and I am not saying you (or I) ever have.....but suppose you had - and suppose you really liked the texture.....then I would suggest you come here for the sashimi lunch special. to be fair, I am coming off two really good sushi meals elsewhere in the city - but the $12 sashimi special was chewy and bland (if you didn't already pick up on that) - it's served with a salad glopped with way too much bland dressing, and a fairly average bowl of miso soup. and it's served pleasantly and efficiently - but nice, quick service of crap is still crap. to me it's worth the extra 5 minute drive and just grab something from Whole Foods for half the price and a bit more flavor. my lunchmates seemed to enjoy their meals better - hopefully they will Yelp as well, because my meal didn't warrant the kindness of an overall experience muting this review at all. read more

The short version: Stellar service, excellent food, uncomfortable wait for a table, trendy [and slightly crowded] atmosphere, and I wish they had a parking lot The long version: I admit that I was skeptical about trying this place at first, but I have been won over. My husband and I went on a Friday or Saturday night . . . I know, not the best time to just go and try to get a dinner table without even calling ahead, but what can I say? We live on the edge. Anyway, the place was so packed that waiting on the inside was clearly out of the question. Waiting in the . . . what do you call it? foyer? . . . the little place between the outside door and the inside door seemed a little too cozy as well, so we took a walk around the block, in the middle of January, then looked at the bikes in the window of Farina's next door, danced around in front to keep warm, moved into the foyer place, eventually upgraded ourselves to the inside, and were seated (yay!) at the sushi bar. The general look of New Ginza brought to mind Not Your Average Joe's. They have those trendy lights that come in a red, yellow, blue, or green (maybe?) housing, and the waitstaff all wore black pants, white collared shirts, and ties. My favorite thing about New Ginza was the service. Our waitress was very friendly, and she helped my husband, who wasn't quite sure, decide on the teriyaki pork. It was something different (teriyaki chicken is so cliche), and she recommended it as her personal favorite. The pork was done just right--cooked all the way through, but not dry, with a little bit of crispiness on the outside, and the sauce had a little bit of an extra gingery kick compared to standard teriyaki. My nabeyaki udon was piping hot, with an array of ingredients that pleased even me, the girl who can't make 3-minute ramen without adding in at least five different things. My memory is terrible, so I think it had fishcake, carrot, cabbage, bamboo shoot, egg, ummm . . . nori, and green onion? Nevermind, don't trust me. Try it yourself. My tenpura was good, but not in my top tier of tenpuras. My spicy tuna maki made my mouth happy, but then again, I don't know that I've ever met a spicy tuna roll I didn't like. After stuffing ourselves, having our leftovers packed up, and leaving a nice tip, we squeezed our way out through thre crowd to a small chorus of good-nights and thank yous. I was impressed that two out of three of the sushi chefs even said something. It warmed me almost enough for the walk back to the car, but not quite. Two last impressions that I just remembered, I was a little bit disappointed that the menu was more disproportionately sushi-heavy than I had hoped, and the price was somewhat expensive, or typical for a Japanese place. read more

Four stars? Really? I really had an awful meal here the other night. Their rolls were all awful (chewy and flavorless) their sukiyaki was brutal (thick, tough chunks of skirt steak with tofu and flavorless vegetables). Even their tempura ice cream was messed up...the breading tasted stale. The only things I liked were: the Hamachi Kama was good (though I've had better) and Oshitashi was decent. I have to say this place is a little overrated and overpriced. I love sushi, and I would eat it every day if I could, but not here. New Ginza does have a wide selection and if you're looking for maki that's off the beaten path, you'll probably find it here. The selection is abundant and the fish is always fresh. But given its higher prices, you would think that the sushi would stand above other places. The fact of the matter is... It just doesn't measure up to the hype. I have also found the host/hostess to be slightly curt and rude at times, like it was my privilege to be waiting in line for so-so sushi. I prefer Sushi 21, down the street. They are much smaller restaurant and their selection is not as varied as New Ginza, but they do sushi very well. I've lived around the corner from this place for a year and finally managed to try it out tonight. I am an instant fan! I'm definitely not a sushi person so it was all about the Chicken Teriyaki for me. I was very pleased to see that the meal included miso soup and salad - two things I was craving as well. The take out presentation was top notch and I loved the unexpected thin noodles that accompanied the standard chicken and rice. The portion size was very generous - I'll get two meals out of it and the price ($15.00) was quite reasonable. Everything tasted amazing and the place was packed when I stopped in and there were several people waiting - a sure sign of a good restaurant. I will definitely become a regular as it was FABULOUS! My sushi loving husband and I left ready-to-pop tonight for only $47 plus tip for four maki orders and complimentary green tea! Delicious! The standouts were the Chef Specialty Maki, "Watertown Maki" (eel tempura, cucumber, flying fish roe, rolled with torched salmon on the top) and the "Crazy Maki" (shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, flying fish roe with spicy mayo.) Lovely dimly lit atmosphere with booths providing privacy. A big plus was how baby friendly it is. The waitress quickly brought us a highchair, a "sippy cup" of water and periodically came to entertain our kid! Wish we could afford to dine here every night. read more

Though it is the priciest sushi I've yet found in the area, it's also my favorite place. Everything is fresh and tasty, and they win the local prize for presentation. There's just something about your meal being presented on a bamboo ship, with a long-stemmed bar glass containing a specialty side dish. Beautiful, delicious food. Parking on the street can be dicey, you have to either luck out and find a spot up or down the street on the same side, or cross a pretty busy street. Oh! And bonus -- right now, I swear to God, their fish tank is populated with the cast of Finding Nemo. It has to be deliberate. On the way back from the ladies room I spotted the clownfish first (Nemo!) which compelled me to stay and observe...sure enough, there's a pufferfish, a yellow tang...they were all in there. Fish don't live forever and salt water fish are really hard to care for, so this may change before you can try New Ginza, but it was a delight to stumble upon. Something strange about New Ginza...the ladies room. When you walk in, you see a commode. Just beyond that is a stall, with a door, with a second commode inside. What do you call this set-up? If you do not lock the main door and opt for the stall, that means a stranger can come in and occupy that first commode...is that the idea? So you would want to wait for her to finish before exiting the stall? Family or very close girfriends, I could see sharing this bathroom at once. Otherwise, no thank you, I will lock the door, and even though there are two commodes and I only have one ass, I'm bogarting both commodes, sorry, thank you. read more

Oh my, not good. I'm not sure if the management is new in the reopened New Ginza, but tonight's experience was nothing like past dinners and take outs at New Ginza. Ordered online, got three confirmation emails, food expected in about 30 minutes. Arrived at the restaurant to find that they had no record of my order, then waited another 30 minutes while staff scrambled around. My last menu item was prepared by sushi chefs, placed on the counter, then ignored for another 5 minutes, though I was clearly standing right there and the staff had indicated that I was waiting for that one last item. It's like they weren't even trying to satisfy customers. Sad, because we used to love going to this place! read more

MMMM their shumai is wowowow SO GOOD! It's not the tradtional wonton noodle dumpling. Instead, they're little balls of fried heaven. Not oozing in grease, not more batter than filling, not too soggy, not too crunchy, not burning hot in the middle (thanks to their bite-sized dimensions). The bento box is a ton of food - probably enough for two people, with loads of variety. Everything was yummy, definitely a nice sampler to their offerings - fried things definitely took the cake. Their maki rolls were good, but didn't stand out to me. The restaurant feels clean/relaxed and much larger than it appears from the outside. While the service was attentive and helpful, we had several different people come to our table throughout the meal. Not a dealbreaker, but added a certain disconnect to the dining experience. Worst Sevice Ever!! Our first waitress took our drink order and then ignored us for 15 minutes. Finally, we had to flag down a different waitress to take our order. The food was mediocre at best: the vegetables were cut in a clunky way, the chicken and beef were dry and overcooked and the sauces were bland. I'll never go there or order takeout again. Then being completely underwhelmed with the food we had to again flag down another waitress to bring us our check because the previous waitress disappeared. I left them $4 on a $74 bill: I usually tip 25%-50% for a good meal and good service, but this experience was the worst ever. read more

I went here for the first time last night and enjoyed my experience. I thought the ambiance was great, nice decor, tastefully decorated, quiet (on a Tuesday at 7pm). The service was attentive and friendly. Stars off because of their lack of vegetarian dishes. I found one entree (yaki udon) that sounded vegetarian. It would be great to see more vegetarian choices on the menu! My boyfriend and I ended up ordering some vegetarian sushi rolls which were good but taste-wise, they did not set the place apart from other sushi restaurants. Went here about a year ago when I was in Boston, then went again a few weeks ago. It's a good sushi place. The service is great, and both times the wait wasn't too bad - however both times it was during the week, so maybe it gets crazy Friday/Saturday. Their specialty rolls are good but probably overpriced. I forgot which specialty one I had the first time but I recently had a crispy one with mango over each roll and it was amazing. The quality of the meat is pretty good but not as good as some other places (I'm talking about Sasabune in LA right now). The panfried Gyoza is the best ever. I think that I could subsist on that alone. Tonight, I went to celebrate my new job with my sister and her husband. We demolished 2 orders of gyoza, 3 orders of tuna, 3 orders of salmon, spicy tuna, eel something or other, crazy maki, sweet potato maki and the gold fish maki (complete with tentacle eyes). Props to the brother in law for ordering the fresh sea urchin, which we all tried, but ultimately he ate. I totally hit the sushi wall and had to stop. I'm kind of split on New Ginza.... They had really fresh fish. And the food was presented very prettily. The atmosphere was quiet and comfortable, and our waitress was very attentive. They definitely kept our tea cups full! The special rolls kinda miss the boat on taste and texture. I got the Celtics maki and a spicy tuna. Granted, I knew the Celtics maki had alfalfa in it. But when it came to the table, it was mostly a huge chunk of salmon surrounded by vast fields of alfalfa. I got the sense that there were supposed to be equal parts tuna, yellowtail, and fish roe too, but they were substantially upstaged by the salmon and its fluffy green minion. I know most folks would be of the mind that more fish equals better sushi. But I went to New Ginza with a sushi neophyte, and I'm not a big fan of sashimi-ish chunks of fish. I like the balance of tastes I usually get in fancy maki rolls: a little fish, a little roe, some Japanese mayo, maybe some panko. So, Ginza sort of disappointed on "maki taste balance." Take from that what you will. My friend ordered the roast duck. It was delicious, but it was roasted, chilled, sliced, and served cold. We were expecting maybe a half a duck, so the thin slices of chilled meat that arrived instead just amused and confused us. In sum, I wish the menu had been more descriptive regarding each dish's predominant tastes and how it was prepared. I guess I'll have to try again when I'm in a mood to be surprised. read more

I ordered the raw tuna (served with rice and vegetables) and seared it myself at the table on a hot stone. How cool. Their seaweed salad was yummy and it all went well with our bottle of Chardonnay. My friend is a sushi fan and his something-or-other sashimi and Dragon roll looked gorgeous so I'm going to have to get the nerve up and try it next time I go. Fantastic staff. They call it a "unique dining experience", I call it a uniquely mismanaged restaurant with idiots running it. After it reopened and due to COVID we did takeout or delivery from New Ginza 8 or 9 times. With the exception of 1 or 2 times, the orders were always missing something. It must be rocket science for them to actually fulfill an order correctly. Upon calling, they always express that they were sorry and offered a credit. Like their doing one a favor for crediting you for a dish you paid for, but never received! How generous, not! Tonight it was the salad dressing which is sometime in the salad bowl and sometime in the bag but when I looked in the salad bowl, all I saw was disgusting brown lettuce. Naturally, when I informed them, I got the customary "I'm so sorry, we'll give you a credit". For what? Crap that I couldn't eat? When I asked to speak to the manager to have my meal credited , I was informed by the 20 year old girl at the reception desk, that she was in fact the manager ( classic) and she could not credit the $40 of other food I ordered, despite the fact that she saw that I had been a patron of the joint for several years. So in their infinite wisdom, they lose a customer over $40 who was tired of them being pathetically mismanaged. I know, what took me so long. Anyway, off to call Mastercard and dispute the entire charge. My advice, don't trust them with your food, for eating in or taking out. who the hell knows what's in it. read more
