Haven't been for a couple of years. Decided to go there for dinner a couple of days ago. I wish I didn't. Place went down hill. For some reason the waitress took my plate away as soon as the food was finished-we're taking about literally seconds here. Mind you my companion was still eating. Brought miso soup that had miso dripping from the bowl-now got miso stain on my fav pants. Multiple times the waitress' response to my order was " HUH? HA?" I LOVE the quality and taste of New Ginza's food and especially their sushi. I do NOT recommend their delivery service though. Last Friday I order delivery and after waiting over an hour, the food came with one item missing and because the hot dish was put on top of the sushi the salmon wrapped around the makimono became partly cooked. I also felt like a delivery man had a little trick running to get a bigger tip. He didn't have any cash in his pocket to give change back and told me with a reluctant look that for change he'd have to go back to his car and get it. Then he acted like he should probably not go. I told him, that will be fine if he comes right back. After an extended time in his car, I eventually waved him off eith the bigger tip. My guess is this works all off the time in the cold weather. Have heard great things about the restaurant, and finally got the chance to try it. We started with Yaki Ika, broiled whole squid. The squid was delicious, tender and flavorful and not chewy at all. It was only 50 cents more than the calamari. It came with a salty ginger dipping sauce. We ordered the restaurant special: Red Spider and Amaebi sushi, also a Volcano roll. Red spider was a special roll with soft shell crab and tuna, very delicious. Amaebi was also delicious. Amaebi means sweet shrimp, and the flesh of the shrimp really was sweet and succulent. Volcano roll was delicious and loaded with goodies, like scallops. My friend also ordered the stone grill with beef. Beef was tender and delicious and very substantial portion. He picked the sesame sauce, which paired with the beef really well. Service was great, food was great. 5 stars well-deserved. read more

This is the BEST Japanese restaurant that I've been to in Boston, and I've been in Boston for several years. The food was so delicate and delicious, of course. The sashimi was SO fresh, the uni was so sweet and creamy, one order of the uni sashimi is three times as much as the uni sashimi I had in other Japanese restaurants. The beef tatami was delicious, definitely authentic Japanese dish. The sushi in this place is no less than Oishii and it has a better price!! Absolutely a MUST-GO place in Boston! read more

I am so happy New Ginza is back up and running after a kitchen fire a while back. The menu shifted a bit but it still delivers some of the best sushi in Watertown! We dined in at New Ginza tonight and I was super impressed with the quality of the food plus they got it to us very quickly! New Ginza has been a favorite of mine for the past few years and they recently reopened, after finishing renovations. I was nervous the quality would not be as good, as it's been closed for many months even before the pandemic. But I was totally wrong and pleasantly surprised to find the food tasted even BETTER than before! From the appetizers to the sushi and even the dessert (a first for me here!), all had fresh ingredients and tasted excellent. I came in recently for the first time with some friends. I found the staff to be inattentive and food was subpar. The sushi was not well made and was packed quite loosely. The maki was falling apart as I picked it up with chopsticks. Also was overpriced - $17 for a specialty maki roll compared to $14 at other places. Udon dish was not flavorful. I'd been waiting to try this place for some time. It always looks pretty busy with people waiting outside at nighttime and I'd read several good reviews. We decided to stray from our favourite Watertown sushi place (Sushi 21 just downt he street) on a Wednesday night. We were greeted by a line of people out the door. We waited for about 10 minutes, so it wasn't so bad. We managed to order after finally catching the waitress's eye. I suppose that not being able to order efficiently should have told us something about this place. I should also mention that we received menus without the standard separate sheet listing the various nigiri sushi, so we were unable to order a few of them as we usually do. When we were finally able to order, we settled in for a ONE HOUR wait for the food. They came by several times to refill our hot tea and water glasses, but no food in sight. At that point, I remember thinking that the food better be good if it's going to take this long. We ordered the tenzaru (cold soba noodles with dipping sauce) and chirashi zushi. The food was nothing special, but decently tasty. However, because of the very long I wouldn't go back again after such a bad experience. I had expected for us to receive something for the wait, but we got nothing but an insincere apology. And I don't know how much this matters to other people who read this review, but the people who work here are Chinese. I feel like this makes the food less authentic. read more

Horrible first experience! Customer service from the "owner" was inexcusable. Waited over 2.5 hours for food that was never going to come because according to them they never received it. Owner insisted I will be refunded for the food but not the tip and delivery charge because the he had already paid the driver. I feel very lucky to live in an area that has so many great sushi places. My favorite is around the corner from me. It is cheaper and better than New Ginza but the hours do not always jive with my kids' "need" for sushi. New Ginza is where I go on those off hours because they are pretty much open all day. They do a good bento box for lunch and their a la carte sushi is took quality too. At one point, they were charging for refills of green tea but the last time I went they did not - not sure if that is a policy change but I like that idea better because I am a tea fiend. Something "fishy" about this place! (but only in a good way!) This place and Oishii in Chestnut Hill are my favorites for sushi in the area. They are a little pricey compared to lots of foods, but not really for sushi. I'd call it a good value - I'd rather not have mediocre sushi and pay less - you can't beat good sushi. And definitely not "expensive" as far as sushi goes - I spend about $65 total (inc. tax and tip) when the wife and I eat there. I'm a huge fan of the rolls, as it gives the chef more opportunity to show artistic and culinary skills. The Volcano roll is amazing, as are most other "specialty" rolls. The miso soup is very good also, rounding out a great overall experience. Living in Watertown, it's great to have a top-notch place right around the corner. If you're a sushi snob or just a casual sushi lover, this place has to be on your to-do list. Also - CALL AHEAD! They will take a reservation (or "call-ahead", whatever it's called now), and you can end up waiting a good half hour if you don't. read more

I've died and gone to Sushi Heaven. I'd say this is *the* place for Japanese food in the Boston area. They have really, really fresh sushi and a great ambiance. The service is above-and-beyond fantastic. Like, dictionary definition attentive. My favorites: Aspara Maki (asparagus, avocado, carrots) and the Shan-Chieh Maki (tofu skin, shiitake mushrooms and cilantro). Who knew tofu skin was a thing? In any case, it's delicious. The Stone Grill items are also amazing. My mom ordered the salmon and got to cook several pieces to her liking alongside a variety of vegetables. Plus, the sauce was supah tasty! The service at New Ginza is grrrrrreat and they switch out your eating plate every time you wait for a new order. I was surprised. The awesome part about ordering sushi here is they let you substitute an ingredient of their sushi if u want... ie you dont like tuna but you like everything else on the roll, no prob! they'll put salmon instead.. or whatever your fancy is... Their prices aren't too bad cuz the rolls are completely worth it. It's been 2 hours since dinner and im still thinkin about my yummy sushi orders. Check out the Gold fish too its another yummy one! I just went to New Ginza today for dinner with two friends. I loved every dish that we had. We had Yakitori as an appetizer and I don't have prior experience to draw upon, but I liked it. The meat wasn't burnt but the scallion did taste a bit funny. But it's probably because I had it with tea. We ordered the sushi/sashimi boat for 1 to share. When they say "fresh fish", they really do mean "fresh". I've never had maguro and sake so fresh before! Ikura was good too! The boat itself was beautifully and carefully decorated. We also ordered yaki-udon which was sweet and the sauce was thick. So were the udon noodles. The aroma itself was appealing. I could feel the udon melting in my mouth. We also had Volcano Maki which contained eel and I think it was tempura. The maki itself almost melted inside my mouth and the eel was pretty fresh. Desert was green tea ice cream. It tasted like vanilla at first, but we finally tasted green tea when we were almost done with it. The waitresses were attentive and gave us plenty of time to decide our orders. I think I just stepped into Mr. Miyagi's home?! The New Ginza is a cute, quaint Japanese restaurant close to the Watertown square. Clean wooden textures, calm color tones and beautifully arranged flower pieces gives off a Zen calmness to the place. You instantly feel at peace when you are seated. If there was a Koi pond within the restaurant, it would want me to take a trip to Japan! We arrived there for a late Sunday afternoon lunch and ordered the Bento box special (miso soup, salad, shrimp tempura, spring roll, sushi, seafood yaki/kabob, beef kushiyaki/kabob, sashimi, fish cake, shumai) @ 18.95 and the Nabeyaki udon (noodles, shrimp tempura, vegetables, light fish soup, top with an egg) @ $15.95. The dishes were prepared well and brought to us by their very attentive service staff. They were so attentive, that when one of us dropped our chopped sticks on the floor, literally in less than five seconds someone was handing us a fresh pair. Now that's what I call SERVICE! Prices are a bit on the higher end, but looking at the weekday lunch menu, it's about half of the regular dinner and weekend menu with the same high-quality, now that's a find! I would give this a 4.5 if I could! Went on a Thursday night, made a reservation at 3pm that same day and it wasn't a problem! We had 6 in our party (and 2 toddlers), so I wanted to be sure not to wait too long! Parking wasn't an issue, we found one across the street, I agree it would be nice if they had one, but surrounded by apartments, don't think it's going to happen! We got seated immediately and they were so great about service - just fast enough, just efficient enough, just nice enough... We ordered a bunch of sushi, they didn't have my fav uni - she said the season isn't until Sept (interesting), but the fish was fabulous - melt in your mouth hamachi, an AWESOME spicy tuna handroll (they put very little mayo based spicy stuff which is great, and they put in cucumbers which I love!), the rolls were different and interesting. The miso soup was great. As was the tempura and gyoza (for the kids). They have kid friendly drink containers (always appreciated). Oh and we had a lot of sake and beers, so that always makes everything better! I thought the pace of the food and service was just perfect. We all had different ice cream flavors - ginger, red bean, coconut. Love that they kept it Asian flavors. The only thing that would have been better is if they mochi ice cream! It pains me to write a less than glowing review about sushi, a thing I love, but it must be done. I recently had a night at New Ginza that I struggle to say was worth 1/2 of 5 stars. Zingers first? They almost killed my friend. That's a bummer. I witnessed him mention his deathly allegic reaction to shellfish to the waitstaff. Regretfully this information didn't make it over to the cook who unfortunately didn't take this into account when preparing our food. We got him out of there asap, gave him a ton of bennedril like it was going out of style, and rushed him to an ER. Kinda breaks the mood o' food. That snafu aside, I gave their Celtic Maki a run which sounded delicious on the menu, but tragically dissapointed. Their excessive use of alfalfa sprouts made my sushi feel more like a salad. Also, sushi cuts themselves were significantly smaller than what you might be hoping for. I can only speak to my food, but my colleagues (especially my allergic amigo) as well weren't all too pleased. read more

I've been wanting to try New Ginza for a while and I'm glad I went. Most of the reviews already posted are spot on - it's a lovely little spot that feels clean and bright and calm inside. The staff is extremely friendly. The waitress accidentally brought a carafe of sake instead of the bottle that we ordered, which turned out to be for the best, and the apologized profusely when we caught the wrong charge on the bill. Service was quick and polite. The food is delicious! They have a very expansive menu so I'll definitely have to go back and try some standards to compare (regular rolls, Spider Maki, etc) but I couldn't resist the Special Makimono. We started with the sashimi appetizer - REALLY good quality fish; and the tuna tataki which was also excellent. Then we got, mainly based on Yelp reviewers, the B-52 Maki and the Black Dragon Maki. Holy wow batman. The B-52 maki were HUGE - 5 pieces to an order which was plenty. I could barely fit one in my mouth! (that's what she said?) Soooo good, especially if you like tempura in your rolls. the Black Dragon Maki came with something insane like 10 pieces, all a decent size, with deliciousness abundant in every one. Really good sauces as well - some kind of spicy mayo and a sweet soy sauce. They have a decent sake selection, Sapporo on draft, and yummy plum wine (my drink of choice). It's certainly not the cheapest sushi around (I recommend SuperFusion II across the Charles in Watertown Sq. if you want cheaper but still good), but it's very high quality and I'll definitely go back to try more. read more

This is a great lunch spot. I work nearby. It's really quick, it's bright and clean, service is great. The food is fresh and the lunch specials are a really good deal. I always get the combo of salad, udon noodle soup and spicy tuna roll. It's only like $10 and I can never finish it all. My only complaint is that this may be the only sushi restaurant I've evenr gone to where they don't give you a warm towel to wash your hands before the meal...Hmmm. I checked out New Ginza for the first time tonight and am glad that I made the gamble to venture out of the Cambridge/Somerville/Boston area for the sushi, which I'd heard good things about. I didn't try anything other than the sushi, and don't see any need to... the sushi was delicious! Fresh fish and pretty good rice, though they weren't rolled and packed as expertly as they could have been-- my nigiri sushi fell apart on a few occasions. The nigiri, though, was definitely the forte of the place-- the composed rolls were good, but not amazing. We had a negihama roll that was also extremely tasty-- the quality of the fish is, I think, what carries this place. And they had fresh ikura (my favorite!) which I'd never seen before in the Boston area. We sat at the sushi bar, and our two sushi chefs, who were both from Thailand and extremely friendly, helpful and attentive, let us know what was fresh and helped us out with recommendations on what was our first but surely not our last visit! I wish they'd open a place in Cambridge, closer to home, but in the meantime, definitely worth the bus ride out! read more

Terrible service (this is not the case at the Chinatown location) What constitutes "terrible service"? 1) Reaching across the table numerous times often so close to my face, that if I stuck my tongue out it would touch their arm. 2) not placing items on the table, but waiting for us to clear an appropriate area for items they are holding. 3) Trying to hound us out of the restaurant by vulturing the table and immediately removing each item we cleared of a second to last piece... 4) The behavior was encouraged by whomever was running the register (the manager? owner?) when delivering the check. 5) Removing the soy sauce, never providing more water etc...this was Not hyper good service this was "we want to go home now---even though we just brought your dish 15 minutes ago behavior". This is not a cheap joint so it's really not cool to treat customers this way. Reading the positive yelp reviews I am wondering if the evening staffing is different from the lunch time staff. This has happened repeatedly, my partner wants to believe we hit them on a bad night -- and gives them another chance. I'm now convinced that his location sucks...the neta is also not as good as that at the Chinatown location. Too bad I live in the boonies. read more

After a preview of the menu, decided to give this place, a little outside of Boston, a try. The menu contained toro so I had to check it out. The place was packed but they take reservations so that was helpful. To my surprise, the sashimi pieces were cut large. Not just small slices but a big piece, a pretty healthy helping. That was awesome. Despite the fact that it seemed to be run by non-Japanese, it was decent. They don't have truly authentic Japanese food but have good quality sushi. Being close to Boston, the fish was fresh. There was a good variety of rolls too. It's a good place to check out especially if you don't want to go downtown. read more

I've eaten at New Ginza a ridiculous amount of times in the past few years- and have gotten take-away many times too - and have no idea why I haven't reviewed it yet. Better late than never! The only downside to New Ginza that I can see is the parking. There really is none; you have to try your luck with street parking which, on busy Friday and Saturday nights, can be kind of a pain. But it's totally worth it because: -The sushi is delicious. The fish always tastes fresh, and I love some of their more creative maki rolls - the snow mountain roll (sweet potato tempura and eel topped with crab meat, scallions, tobiko, and a special mayo sauce) is my favorite. I'm a huge fan of Philadelphia rolls too, and New Ginza makes them the best out of all the others I've tried. -The price is right. You'll find the food priced roughly the same at pretty much any other sushi place in Greater Boston, plus you know you're getting fresh, quality food for your money. -The staff is super friendly and awesome. The boy and I have become regulars, and certain waitresses always recognize us and go out of their way to come over and say hello. The sushi chefs usually yell out a hello or a thank you as patrons come and go too, which I haven't experienced at other sushi places. -The fact that so many patrons are regulars says something about New Ginza's quality. Practically every time I'm there, I see the owner and other staff chatting away with other customers like they're old friends, and I've heard many people say that they go to New Ginza all the time because it's just so good. -Their lunch specials are pretty great deals. For $12, you can get salad, miso soup, just the perfect amount of sushi, and unlimited green tea. And that's only the special I've tried; there are a bunch of others that look equally as delicious and inexpensive. New Ginza is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Boston. They are in the same group with FugaKyu and Oishi 2. I've been there countless times. The Sushi selection is quite large, the maki selection has its own section in the menu, it's large. To get even more choices, ask about their daily specials. They vary a lot so you never know what it is going to be. They get Japanese oysters and Japanese yellowtail from time to time - only few places in Boston do. The presentation is done with care and is excellent. Try Japanese dishes outside of the Sushi list: Cold wilted spinach with sesame sauce (ohitashi), age dashi tofu are the best I've tried anywhere so far. New Ginza was a lovely place with lovely service, a lovely menu, and a lovely wine, beer, and sake list. I just was not a fan of the food. While everything tasted okay, it just missed the mark. Here were my issues: - Salad dressing was overly creamy - Sushi pieces were smaller than I've seen anywhere else - Eel was fishy tasting - Roll was overly chewy My bill was just over $20 for way too much food and a glass of wine. Not too pricey but not a crazy, super bargain either. If we're rating New Ginza in the context of what is available here, then obviously it rates higher. I drive by NG almost daily, but as it's a sushi place in....Watertown, I never gave it a second thought - thrilled that a friend called it to my attn. Rolled up around 7p on a Saturday night and was so pleasantly surprised - a) not only were we seated right away, but b) they have a wonderful selection of fish not traditionally seen on sush menus around here - fresh bonito? Yes. Yes. Yes. I'll blank on the rest, but what I remember entails a few types of aji, GREAT hirame (merited ordering a round 2, as did the bonito), live hotate, etc - in addition to the standard salmon, tuna, etc. They have a bunch of super Westernized rolls - we didn't order any, but they were behemoths to behold and looked pretty tasty if you do lots of fried things in your sush. That said, we did take a brief detour into the exotic w/ this maki creation of yuba, shitakes, and cilantro - sounds weird, but it's pretty addictive, though I can see where the texture of the yuba might throw someone not accustomed to it. For the basics, the alaskan (salmon, cuc, avo) and negihama (yellowtail scallion) are bueno - perfect rice: fish ratio. We also hit up one of their non-sush dishes - it was a light broth w scallions and lemon grass (?maybe?) w slices of salmon tucked in - word to the wise, add some of the yuzu condiment that comes on the side - it's mind bogglingly tart/tasty/amazing.- quite fresh and worth ordering. For a fancy roll, it's around $15/roll, simpler rolls are around $7-8 - oh, and depending on the fish, sushi/sashimi is around $7/order (2pieces). Din for 2 real eaters will run around $35/pp (w/o booze or dessert) - if you're a grazer who will be satisfied with a roll and miso, it could be done cheaply - but what's the fun in that? read more

This is one of my little splurges that I treasure. I have always had great experiences here but this past visit prompted me to put fingers to keyboard to sing its praises. My best GF and I went in recently on a Thursday night and, after a very brief wait, were seated in the back dining room. We ordered a bottle of wine and our standard fall back shumai app. The shumai is very tasty so we always get it. In fact it could be said that we are in a bit of a sushi rut. We stray once in a while but we stick to the core basics that we know we like. But this time I decided that I'm breaking up with Mayo based sauces on my sushi. I don't love them so why have to scrape off the mayo? That being said I do like spicy tuna. Dilemma. I turned into the needy, pain in the butt customer and asked if we could get the mayo on the side of the Ebi Mango roll and to replace the mayo based spicy sauce with Sriracha sauce instead. Not only was the server very accommodating and happy to make the changes she divulged that she eats her spicy tuna the same way. No mayo. She also suggested the Volcano Roll which we will be making room for in our sushi rut. It was absolutely delicious. Our sushi was, as always, delicious. Our service was very good. I love New Ginza. I get takeout at least once a week. I really love taking my two girls, age 5 and 8, to sit at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs are very friendly and interactive with them and enjoy how adventurous they are. Their favorites are octopus and salmon sashimi. I think their sushi is very fresh and very tasty. It is true. They are the best sushi in Boston area. Not just sushi but their Korean items are pretty good too. My favorite is Bee-bim-baap, meat is sooooooo succulent, tasty and cut in small pieces, love it! We had forgotten about this place for last few years, but now that we've moved to Watertown I can see us being regulars here. Service can be tricky sometimes. But it could be just me. I don't like people serving me iced water when I tell them twice to give me water without ice. It's a minor thing though. Also ladies toilet. Must visit. Sushi fish is fresh! I do even surprised that it was good. Salmon they had melted in my mouth!! Tempra is pretty good as well. It will give you a lot if you order the dinner version of it and it will come with miso soup and salad! I never eat in at restaurant but it is pretty good. :) read more
