Cool and relaxing tasting room! The third floor tasting room and bar are throwbacks to a time when people sat around in big leather chairs with strong distilled beverages (no cigars anymore). This is the vibe at New Liberty. We sampled a couple flights of their bourbon and were very pleased with the overall taste. We also tried their old fashions, which ended up being one of THE BEST I've every had. It was crafted perfectly! The bartenders were great! What a stunning space!! We were in the area tasting local spirits and decided to pop in to see what New Liberty was all about. After chatting with the gentleman at the front about some history and listening in on a tour that was wrapping up we decided on some of their cocktails and took a seat in the lounge area. The space was inviting and relaxing and a great space to enjoy some great drinks! After cocktails we tried a few spirits on their own (everything was delicious) and I purchased a bottle of gin. I love how reasonably priced everything was! Can't wait to have friends over to try my new Gin and to go back for more. read more

We absolutely loved it here!! My fiancé and I came in just because we were checking out all the spots on American street, honestly if you didn't know where you were going you wouldn't think anything was here... You have to go through some type of backyard area, and walk up some stairs, you'll see a room with all the wine barrels and then up some more stairs and finally you made it!! So definitely not super accessible to everyone. The rustic vibe though is sooo chill! We loved everything about it. And big ups to Danielle the bartender and Chris!! They were both great, Chris told us a little about the distillery and the processes and Danielle was one of the best bartenders I've encountered so the both of them kept us there for quite a while. In addition, while sitting at the bar we met about 4-5 couples that were super dope! So, it's always great to be around great company especially when you're drinking whiskey! Great distillery space and bar that I visited for the first time with a friend! We didn't take the distillery tour. We only came to grab some cocktails at the bar. The whiskey drinks and options were all really good! The only downside is that they only had one bartender working and there were actually a lot of people. They may expect more people to do distillery tours, but a lot of the people were there just for a drink in the afternoon. The bartender was still super attentive, just really busy. If you blinked, or perhaps even if you didn't, you'd miss this gem. I didn't have a clue this place even existed until it was suggested that I visit - and man, I'm so glad I did! New Liberty Distillery has got a solid spot for hangs, delicious cocktails, and an impressive array of whiskeys. I popped in here on a snowy Saturday afternoon around 3. The timing was fate, because we were informed that they'd be closing at 4 for a private event. With that being said, this is an awesome, rustic little (emphasis on the little) space to host a private event. However, it appears they may need to be better about communicating to the public about when they're closed for such events. The building is three stories, with the third floor being the tasting room. It's important to note that this place is NOT accessible if you're physically impaired, and the stairs to the third floor are a little narrow. When we entered the building on the second floor, there was a woman sitting at a table greeting the guests? I presume that's what she was there for - but really, she just gave us a weird look and asked if she could help us. I assumed we had come in the wrong way or maybe they were closed. When we said we wanted to see the tasting room, she kind of waved us towards the stairs. It was a bizarre interaction. The tasting room was cozy and merely empty when we came. The girl working the bar was super knowledgeable, full of great suggestions, and precise in her mixology. My ginger, lemon, Irish whiskey concoction was potent and absolutely delicious. The whiskeys were smooth and delicious, offering "flights" you have the opportunity to smell/ taste/ experience four of their varieties. I was bummed that we had to leave after only an hour, and even though we followed the signs for the exit, we somehow ended up losing our way. I got to say too - those stairs have the potential to be super dangerous after a few rounds of whiskey. Just beware. All in all, great experience. I would definitely come back, though I don't see myself making this a regular spot due to location and inconsistent hours. I went here for the first time this past Saturday. I came with my neighbor who had also not been here before. The building is unique, and the bar has an awesome laidback feel upstairs. The drinks were okay. There is no gin, and the better tasting whiskey is actually made off site and shipped in. The reason for the two star is that our bartender asked if we'd like to join the 4pm distillery tour. We gladly accepted and the tour was awesome. I learned some stuff and got to try a variety of different drinks. However, we were never informed that there was a 15$ charge for the tour. I don't care if the charge is 1$ or 100$, you need to make your customer's aware whether that is signage or even verbal. Anyhow, definitely worth 15$ (they really do give you a generous amount at the end), but please don't assume everyone there has been to your website. I may go back and give them another shot since I live within walking distance. Now the hard part is convincing my neighbor to give them another try! Blown away! We rolled in on a Saturday and came for the tour/tasting. The first thing we did, though, was tried some of their spirits at the bar upstairs. I had a flight of three whiskeys and they were really good. Phenon, our tour guide, came up and got us for the tour. She was very knowledgeable and friendly. When it came to the tasting, she was even more knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They have a zinfandel whiskey which tastes like wine and whiskey. It's smooth and velvety!!! read more

The hours here are very limited but if you hit this place right it's a really cute cocktail bar. The drinks are well made. The building has a rustic warming feeling. I keep forgetting this place is in my neighborhood but finally I decided to try it with some relatives on Saturday afternoon. It is a great little spot. The spirits are very good. I enjoy bourbons of which they had a good selection here. Additionally there are non-whiskey options and great cocktails for people who aren't into drinking whiskey straight. The bar on the 3rd floor is very cozy and the bartender, whose name I unfortunately forgot, was extremely knowledgeable. One suggestion for the future would be to add some easy snacks for purchase. What an seemingly unknown spot in the neighborhood. Outdoor and inside upstairs seating with a wide wide arrange of liqueurs and whiskeys. Hopped up stairs to a very old school looking whiskey bar with the bartender pouring some great looking cocktails. After trying a flight of whiskeys I tried the Mount tea cocktail which was like a suped up long island. I also had their old fashion and out of the two I loved the tea. I could get a pitcher of that and be satisfied. If I'm in the area again I would definitely come here for cocktails over the more crowded Frankfort ave strip. read more

Fantastic place to go if you enjoy bourbon and whiskey. The atmosphere at the bar is like someone's study, with lots of leather and dark wood. I rarely like cocktails (I'm more an "on the rocks" type of girl) but they were very well made and celebrated the alcohol rather than trying to cover it up. The tour and tasting is definitely worth your time. All of the employees go above and beyond to make sure you have a unique experience. I can't say enough good things about this place and will continue to bring people there to experience it! Location/venu wise, this place is epic. It has historical significance, restored or maintained architecture and artifacts, and odes to the prohibition era everywhere. That said, it's a little bit hard to find and the entrance is tucked away. We stumbled upon it after searching yelp for "happy hours" and we were very sad to find out that their happy hour "special" was a $7 city wide... hardly a deal at all when you compare it to other local breweries or distilleries. We were aghast to find that with tips at 20%, our drinks were $16 a piece. They are fine cocktails, but the service and environment simply don't warrant that price tag. Unfortunately I have to say I would not recommend to go out of your way for this one. On a positive note, the bottles of Kinsey are beautiful, and their bourbon and whiskey is delicious. read more

Not only will you learn a great many things from taking a tour of this beautiful space, but the drinks are super tasty. For $10 you can get yourself educated and tour the distillery, which used to house horses and has some original 1906 architecture. Afterwards, you'll head up to the third floor tasting room which is rustic and gorgeous. Three tastings are included in the price of the tour, but don't stop there. Full disclosure...I stumbled on this place by accident and didn't drink, so why 4 stars? Well, Waze led me astray for the first time ever and took us to this address. The employees chuckled that we meant to go to St Ben's. They kindly offered a tour of their magnificent building, interspersing it with whiskey trivia. If I wasn't such a cheap date, I'd have had samples but whiskey before beer is a no go for me. I will go back for sure. This is definitely my favorite distillery in Philadelphia. The space is beautiful and the staff are funny, knowledgeable and friendly. They offer a wide range of products - my only complaint is that their branding is all over the place so it's tough for me to remember which product is theirs and what they made themselves versus partnering with others. Luckily their staff is on hand to answer any and all questions. Their mixed drinks are unbelievably good, but if you actually like the taste of straight alcohol, I highly recommend a flight. I tried the cask strength 7 year, rye, and bourbon next to each other in order to see the differences and was pleasantly surprised with all three of them but they were all very different. No food (which is actually great since there are no competing smells, tastes to deal with) but I do recommend picking up a bottle of maple syrup while you are there - you won't be disappointed. read more

Stopped in with a group of family members last night because we were visiting a new brewery that just opened right across the street. Atmosphere both inside the 3 story building and outside in the garden/patio area is first rate, very cool. Particularity with the musician they had last night in the garden area. Unfortunately that's the best part. Our drinks were average at best. The Mount Tea was good (2 of the group had that) was good but nothing really special. The Old Fashioned, which two of had, was very average. Their cider was good. Expected a bit better, particularly since as others have noted, the prices are very steep. $12 for these drinks is high by almost any standard. more on the pricing below. Service was also a bit odd, both outside and inside at the main bar. The outside bartender, who was not really busy, suggested we go inside to order since he said there more drink options inside. So we took his advice. But service at the inside bar was really slow, even though it was not crowded there either, maybe 10 folks total. When I went to pay for our round of six drinks, the bartender told us to just pay at the outside bar. Very trusting of her, but odd since they do not have an automated system and the outside bartender had no way to know what we ordered. I think the bartender just did not want to be bothered ringing us up. When we went to pay outside, we had to tell the bartender what ordered. The surprise came when he told me the total. Even though there were clear signs indicating that the drinks were $10 each, he charged us $12 each. When I asked him why, he said drinks from inside were more expensive than the drinks outside. His rationale was that the outside drinks were served in plastic cups and the inside drinks, even though we could bring them outside to drink, were served in glasses. He also said the inside drinks were made from scratch while the outside drinks were premixed. This logic made no sense to me, particularly since the drinks we had were not on par with many other scratch made drinks. I was also annoyed because this bartender actually told us to go inside to order drinks even though we tried to get them from him when we first got there. Made even worse, he never mentioned that drinks were more expensive if we ordered inside. Bottom line, great atmosphere, very average drinks and very strange, even misleading pricing, charging different prices based on which bar you order from. Worth going just to see the place, but beware of the ordering policy and the pricing. We will not be back. read more

We purchased a tour and tasting through Groupon and stopped in on a rainy Saturday. The tour was very interesting--I've had my fair share of brewery/winery tours, but there's a lot I didn't know about whiskey, its production, and its history. Personally, the tasting was a letdown. I am not, nor will I ever be, someone who can drink straight liquor. I sipped each sample, definitely noticed the differences, but couldn't handle any more. I wonder if they could make it an option to either do the tasting or get a free cocktail instead, because the one I had prior to the tour was awesome. read more

Went on a tour here and the staff was incredibly nice. We arrived a couple minutes late and one employee told us to just hop on and that we could take care of the particulars (cost of tour/sampling) later. This is a very cool place to go have a drink. The bartenders know what they are doing, as I had the best darn whiskey sour of my life. The only reason this isn't a 5-star is because they don't serve their own whiskey yet. Right now, they serve "Kinsey", which is mixed by them, but not made in their own barrels. Their actual homemade stuff should be ready to drink by January 2017 and I can't wait!! read more
