This was a fun thing to do in Philly during the snow storm. It was a cool way to learn how they make their own vodka and whiskeys right in a 900sf basement. It was pretty interesting. The host was pretty good. He obviously knew his whiskey. The bartender was funny and made a strong drink lol. He only used 3 ingredients and it was hitting! At the end they give you a tasting of all the things they make at that distillery. My favorite was the pineapple vodka. Very delicious and made with real pineapples. Yummy! Came here for whiskey tour. I previously had done some of bigger your of whiskey distillaries. This was definitely the smallest, just a tiny room. Tour itself was short cause of that. Expect maybe 10-15 mins. Knowledge wise this was below what I learned at the major places. After wards there's a whiskey tasting of about 5 small shots of their products. 1 rum, 3 whiskeys and a birch beer. Whiskeys were very tasty and bar tender was friendly and knowledgeable. They also have cocktails or whiskey on bar for about 13$. Overall this has a very independent vibe and was fun but definitely not same quality as the major places. read more

So I saw a groupon for tour, tasting and whiskey glass to Red Brick Craft Distillery and being a tour lover bought the two person option for my boyfriend and I check the place out (As of today, 3/14, the deal is still available for 1, 2 or 4 people). The groupon didn't list the hours and there website wasn't the most helpful in terms of hour either but they have a facebook page and that had hours listed as Sat/Sun 1-5. We walked up and there a small sign and number on the door to call. Seemed a little sketchy at 1st but we called Zach, said the number on the door said to call and he said he be right there to let us in. After walking down a long hallway we were pleasantly surprised to see a small but very nice bar tasting area. We present our groupon to Zach he got us our glasses and Teekay the bartender started us off with our samples. We tired the Simple Shine sugar wash rum and the Simple Shine sugar wash rum infused in pineapple. Before grabbing a drink to take on the tour with us. Zach went over the products they are making Simple Shine sugar wash rum and Simple Shine sugar wash rum infused in pineapple, Whiskey and Into the Woods (Birch Beer) liquor. They use local ingredients, getting there malt from nearby Deer Creek Malthouse which we were informed has a tour so I may have to look into checking out. And they recycle their water during the distilling process. We got to smell many of the in progress products. View all the machinery and barrel room. Its small but very efficient. They are currently using gallon and three gallon barrel so they can age the Whiskey faster but hope to in the future upgrade to 5 gallon barrels. They are only selling the Simple Shine sugar wash rum. They just got approved to sell the Simple Shine sugar wash rum infused in pineapple and working on getting the label approved. The Whiskey is aging and will be ready sometime around May and the Into the Woods (Birch Beer) liquor is also aging and will be ready sometime around July. After the tour we went back to the tasting room where we had the pleasure of chatting with Matt who's in charge of their sales and distribution. We learned a few area bars and restaurant currently serving Simple Shine sugar wash rum and that one place, Bishop Collar, actually has some of the Simple Shine sugar wash rum infused in pineapple. Teekay made us some off the menu drinks and we each bought a bottle of the Simple Shine sugar wash rum which is going for $28.99. Drinks go for around $9 which seems like a steal for how good all the cocktails we had were. Very important: the cocktails are NOT part of the 'tasting.' It really pains me to only give 3 stars to what had been 5 star experience, mostly because my wife and I felt misled by the incredibly hospitable bartender to order as many drinks as possible before the tour began as part of the experience, only to realize that they were indeed not complimentary part of the tour or tasting, but rather $12 per drink. We came here with a groupon gift, which paid for a tasting, tour, and 2 free glasses. The staff, when we arrived were very friendly and appeared passionate about their craft as well as retelling their underdog story. When we initially got there, the bartender greeted us with such enthusiasm and constantly offered us drinks, telling us that it would help with the short tour and provide better insight into the distillery experience. While there was a sign with some cost, there was never any direct references that we'd have to pay separately and this was not a part of the tasting tour. The drinks were decent, in fact, I really liked how they used fresh ingredients and their own products. I was not a big fan of their birch mule, but mostly because it was too sweet. My old fashion was made well, but definitely limited in amount of liquor poured per cost. The actual tour can be viewed if you just stood in the middle of the small room, but that's quite alright because it was part of the charm and done very well. I was personally very impressed and engaged the entire time, from the distillery stage to the casking, to the bottling steps. As for the actual tasting, you were given 5-6 small mini shots of their selection, some of which are 100+ proof, so you will certainly be buzzed. As I said, we loved the entire experience until we were awkwardly told to pay for all of the drinks we ordered before the tour. Had I been told specifically that these cocktails were beyond the tasting experience, I would have been ok with it, but the way in which we were goaded into buying as many drinks as possible with the air of 'it's part of the experience, it's no bother...' made it incredibly misleading. Just to clarify, there are signs that indicate the cost of the cocktails, but I would have liked the owners to be more direct about this unexpected transaction. At the end, both my wife and I felt cheated and swindled, and it was a nasty aftertaste that lingers until the final words of the review. The experience would have been much better if we had known beforehand. Anyway, we paid tip, took our glasses and bid this place farewell. Please take this review with a grain of salt as it reflects our emotions and perspectives as patrons of this fine distillery. read more

The "From the Woods" Black Birch spirit has fun notes of birch beer --- good for goofy old-timey porch-sitting. They carefully avoid calling it "whiskey" on their website or the label since it doesn't fit any of the relevant standards. Red Brick sends a stall around to some of the local farmers' markets; they've got fifths and smaller bottles (200ml half-pint, if I remember correctly) but no taster-size nips. Brian was a great tour guide. Lol probably too great, the tour lasted a little too long considering the place was just one room, but it was a fun experience. His dog was really cute. Overall I like the whiskey, probably not worth the $50 fifths, but I like supporting a small business. read more

My girlfriend and I were visiting Philly for a work trip and had an extra day to tool around the city today. We both love whiskey and found a Groupon for Red Brick Distillery and decided to do a tasting in between meals and historic sightseeing. Only 4 people showed up for the 1PM tasting, which made the whole experience intimate and really chill. My girlfriend and I shared an Old Fashioned at the beginning of the tour and got to bring it along throughout the entire 45 minute tour, which was really cool. The bartender (Nate) and the distiller (Brian) were both very knowledgeable and articulate and walked us through a 'how to' of distilling and tasting whiskey spirits. Honestly, it felt like we were having drinks with friends who were teaching us about spirits. I asked a ton of questions throughout the distillery tour (since we were a small group) and was impressed with how patiently Brian answered them all. After the tour, we did a tasting that was easily the best 'sip-by-sip' walk through experience I could imagine for appreciating whiskey (2 types) and rum (1 type). We were told about flavors that would evolve in our mouths just before and while they did, with amazing accuracy. This was different from any tasting I've been on, and was extremely memorable. We left with 2 bottles and 2 whiskey glasses to take back to California. I'd totally recommend visiting this distillery, and I'd come back again if fate brought me back to Philly. They are working on some new creations that aren't quite ready yet that sound exciting to try out. 5 stars, and thank you both for such a great experience! read more

Okay kudos to these dudes for A) putting on a great tour, B) getting us good and drunk, and C) putting up with our group. A friend found a Groupon for a whiskey tasting and tour, so we wandered over after a leisurely pre-game brunch at Girard. First of all, it's really hard to find and you may or may not feel like you are entering a hidden dungeon of some sort. That's okay. Go with it. You should also pee before your tour starts because you don't wanna be That Guy who interrupts the tour. And I use the word 'tour' pretty loosely, because the entire shebang happens in 2 rooms. But it was awesome! The owner wasn't there during the beginning, so ze bartender made us some drinks to start and then showed us all the equipment, explained the history, etc. This was all very interesting and I'm sure it would be even more so to someone who is a self-proclaimed whiskey nerd, which I am not. But could still appreciate the 'making something out of nothing' story, and the whiskey tasting that followed the tour definitely knocked me on my ass, which I feel is partially the point? Maybe? If so, a job well done. Then the owner shows up... and lets us play with his puppy. It was a great day. I'd highly recommend the Groupon if you're into whiskey/puppies/day drinking. read more

Came here for a tour and tasting and it was great. Matt & TK were amazing hosts that welcomed us like family. TK the mixologists started us off with carefully crafted drinks like no other. I had the spicy grapefruit mojito, yummy! The tour was in a small room next door but very informative, including their barrel room. I recommend visiting for a different experience. Product was of good quality. Don't expect much from the tour though, you can stand in one spot and see the whole operation. Sample room not much bigger. If there are more than four people there, you're standing. If it's $9 for a sample cocktail from the maker, makes me think it would cost $12 to $15 after mark up at a bar/restaurant. read more

Got a tour and tasting from Zach and Tee Kay, and had a really great experience! The space is relatively small but it makes for a more intimate experience. The rum and whiskey they produce is very tasty, and their cocktails complement those spirits very well! Would definitely recommend a visit! read more

I visited Red Brick for the first time today. The tour of the distillery was the perfect length of time and was enjoyable and informative. The tour leader Zach was welcoming and totally knowledgeable. When I chose to drink, whiskey is my spirit of choice. I tend to drink smooth whiskies over those that are robust. I was eager to sample Red Brick's two whiskey offerings. I first sampled the Single Malt whiskey, then the Barrel Strength whiskey. Both we very complex spirits, I think maybe too complex for my taste. The Single Malt had a very similar taste to scotch whiskey. The Barrel Strength had a finish that went on for seemingly ever! Both were quality, handcrafted spirits. It is very easy to see and feel through these products, that the distillers have put their hearts and souls into their craft. I left satisfied and happy that I visited Red Brick. I just think that their whiskies are too complex for the average pallet. Check them out and give them a try! It takes years to train and refine a pallet, hopefully in time, my pallet will be refined enough to enjoy these fine products. read more
