    Tasting glass
    Lauren S.

So I saw a groupon for tour, tasting and whiskey glass to Red Brick Craft Distillery and being a tour lover bought the two person option for my boyfriend and I check the place out (As of today, 3/14, the deal is still available for 1, 2 or 4 people). The groupon didn't list the hours and there website wasn't the most helpful in terms of hour either but they have a facebook page and that had hours listed as Sat/Sun 1-5. We walked up and there a small sign and number on the door to call. Seemed a little sketchy at 1st but we called Zach, said the number on the door said to call and he said he be right there to let us in. After walking down a long hallway we were pleasantly surprised to see a small but very nice bar tasting area. We present our groupon to Zach he got us our glasses and Teekay the bartender started us off with our samples. We tired the Simple Shine sugar wash rum and the Simple Shine sugar wash rum infused in pineapple. Before grabbing a drink to take on the tour with us. Zach went over the products they are making Simple Shine sugar wash rum and Simple Shine sugar wash rum infused in pineapple, Whiskey and Into the Woods (Birch Beer) liquor. They use local ingredients, getting there malt from nearby Deer Creek Malthouse which we were informed has a tour so I may have to look into checking out. And they recycle their water during the distilling process. We got to smell many of the in progress products. View all the machinery and barrel room. Its small but very efficient. They are currently using gallon and three gallon barrel so they can age the Whiskey faster but hope to in the future upgrade to 5 gallon barrels. They are only selling the Simple Shine sugar wash rum. They just got approved to sell the Simple Shine sugar wash rum infused in pineapple and working on getting the label approved. The Whiskey is aging and will be ready sometime around May and the Into the Woods (Birch Beer) liquor is also aging and will be ready sometime around July. After the tour we went back to the tasting room where we had the pleasure of chatting with Matt who's in charge of their sales and distribution. We learned a few area bars and restaurant currently serving Simple Shine sugar wash rum and that one place, Bishop Collar, actually has some of the Simple Shine sugar wash rum infused in pineapple. Teekay made us some off the menu drinks and we each bought a bottle of the Simple Shine sugar wash rum which is going for $28.99. Drinks go for around $9 which seems like a steal for how good all the cocktails we had were. Make you way to Red Brick Craft Distillery its totally worth the trip, we will be back for the Whiskey and Birch Beer Liquor!

Had an informal tour here, and I really enjoyed talking to the guy running the distillation about the process. Cool place, with cool drinks!

Tim was a great host. Very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Philly Brew Tours is a perfect way…read moreto visit multiple breweries and learn about each craft beer. The pace of the tour didn't make you feel rushed. The amount for sampling was very reasonable. Do something different with a group when in Philly. Tim does not disappoint.

My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of doing City Brew Tours this afternoon with our awesome tour…read moreguide Sam. What I felt stood out and made Sam's tour above all of the other various brewery tours that I've been on, is his complete understanding of the chemistry aspect of the brewing process. It's one thing to be able to understand and recite the step by step process of brewing and some of the biological and chemical reactions, but Sam said he went to school in those fields so his knowledge of this fields of study was truly outstanding (and he also had some great stories about beer as well). We visited Flying Fish (the largest and oldest brewery in New Jersey), Lunacy (a cult favorite brewery that I've actually never heard of that only brews at night given the lunar root of their name) and then Roy-Pitz (their main brewing location in not in Philadelphia, but their sours were brewed on site, which if you know anything about beer, sours and all other types of beer need to be kept separated) and Love City Brew Co (this was the last stop on our tour and was PACKED) in the Spring Garden Arts section of Philadelphia. All of the breweries we visited we got a sort of "backstage" look at their specific brewing process as well as tasted four of their beers. On the third stop we had a late lunch/early dinner of sandwiches or burgers (which I didn't even finish because I was so full). Overall based on things learned, new breweries visited, food portion size, and overall tour guiding, I'd give City Brew Tours a 10/10 if it were possible on Yelp. By the end I couldn't even drink anymore beer (I'm tiny, sue me) and left with some new appreciation of some pretty cool breweries that I had never been too. I understand that not every tour goes to the same brewery, seeing as not all will have the same availability week to week, so I'd defs be interested to do another Brew Tour and get to explore some other breweries as well. City Brew Tours was a full day of fun, facts and brews, would highly recommend!

The Honey Whiskey I knew I was going to like as it had a sweet sip that didn't burn like the two prior. I could see myself drinking it neat or in a cocktail. The remaining two had similar tastes. Again not an expert on Whiskey so I know the Honey won me over with the pronounce sweet finish vs the more traditional whiskeys in the other tasting glasses. Regardless stop in before a night out or a serene way to walk throthrough Fishtown feeling a little bit warmer during the fall months.

There are some interesting takes and combinations and the ingredients themselves are tasty. I went with the cardamon old fashioned, which was fair. I wasn't inspired to buy one of their somewhat pricey bottles of take-home spirits. The vibe itself is somewhat small which wouldn't necessarily bother me but we happened to go on a Sunday afternoon where there were two groups of patrons that were so so loud, borderline screaming. I'm all for having a good time but it was bordering excessive. And the service was strangely slow. It took a fair amount of time to get a menu, when there were essentially no other new people waiting and the bartender was cleaning her station, and getting the drinks/check took a good amount of time. With a lot of other options in the area I probably would chose something else.
