I'll start by advocating that Village Whiskey lives up to its title of having the best burger in Philly. I visited for lunch during Restaurant Week, which I enjoyed because of its close proximity to the corporate hub in Center City where I work and for its solid menu. I was seated quickly at a high-top for my noon reservation. The restaurant is much larger inside than it looks, split in half with the left providing an upscale bar aesthetic while the right presents a quieter, modern lounge feel. (It seemed like service staff was directing those with previously-booked OpenTable RSVPs to the lounge side.) Service was great, as my waitress continuously checked in during my meal even as more customers arrived throughout the lunch period. I appreciated being offered to add fries on my burger order, as Village Whiskey didn't have it automatically added on the RW menu. The only drawback was she forgot to ask how I wanted my burger cooked, but it came out medium rare which is the way I eat it regardless. I trust that's how they default, which is a good sign. The Food Breakdown: Deviled Eggs (4/5) - Classic, solid, and a good starter. I honestly selected it since the other appetizer options didn't really appeal to me, but nothing spectacular or negative about it. Four comes with each order. All-American Burger (5/5) - Fantastic. I'm not a pickle enjoyer, but the acidity just blended into each juicy bite. The jam had a slight kick, and you can taste the fattiness within the double Wagyu smash patties. High-quality all around and a solid portion size. Duck Fat Fries (4/5) - They were well-seasoned, and each order comes with a small side of ketchup. Granted I didn't ask, but I almost wish they offered a spicy mayo instead because it would complement the crunchiness better. Overall, the food quality and taste were superb. My only caveat was the price, knowing that $35 after tax and gratuity for lunch (without an additional drink) is costly. I wouldn't be able to come everyday, but it certainly has my vote for sharing with others the destination that has an immaculate burger. read more

I had reservations for this place and my party was the first to arrive for dinner. The place was empty, and I had 1 extra person in my party. The wait staff informed me that there was NO ROOM for us in the EMPTY seating area, so we were seated next door in the bar area. If you can tell me why there was no room in an empty restaurant for a party who arrived ON TIME, please someone let me know. At any rate the bar area was fun and lively but a bit narrow to navigate. Since it was happy hour, we ordered all of the $6 Snacks and some $8 snack items. OOOK, here we go: Hot chicken slider( you only get 1 folks) very good and had the right amount of toppings 5/5 Pulled pork slider: Very flavorful, juicy, and tender: 5/5 Caesar salad: 5/5 Deviled eggs. Good, but too salty Fried pickles: Good, but too salty Chicken & Andouille Gumbo: This was excellent. The braised chicken thighs were seasoned well and very tender. The pickled red onions really elevated this dish. 5/5 The grilled salmon had a great char and crunch. It was not dry nor over cooked. 5/5 The burger was delicious just as a burger should be and the famous duck fat fries were very crunchy. 5/5 for both Happy hour is really the time to go, but make sure they honor your reservation. We waited a long time for the bill to arrive, and when it finally did, it was the wrong one. We had to wait again for them to return with our correct bill. Then, after we waited again for them to take our card, they finally come again took our bill and card, and wait again.... then next they come back a bill with a different amount with no explanation why. We were very disappointed . At this point, we just wanted to leave because of all the waiting. Food is alright not worth with all this bad service. The bathroom is clean. The best thing here that we tried were the duck fat fries. I love fries and I will order whatever version of it I see on a menu and these fries were thick, crispy, almost burnt, so there's no way I did not love these fries in particular. The sauces on the side (except for ketchup) are $2 extra which was a bit eyebrow-raising but I got the smoked thousand island one and it was absolutely transcendent. If I came back here, I'd get just the fries and two of those sauces and be a happy camper. The rest of the food was all right. I went with the avocado and shrimp salad and while the amount of shrimp was generous, I suppose I wanted more of the salad. This is definitely an appetizer salad instead of an entree salad - I should have gotten the Cobb, which was a lot heartier. Our waiter was pleasant but definitely harried. So there are two entrances to VW that are side-by-side and with no hostess stand, which was a bit confusing - both have bar and table seating. If you come for brunch on the weekends, definitely recommend a reservation. read more

I came in with a friend for a casual bite. The ambiance is nice! We were in the bar area and it's a bit small if it's too busy, but the dining room is always available as well. The service was fantastic. Our waitress was incredibly sweet, and the other staff were friendly as well. They have a lot of cool cocktails on the menu, especially if you like whiskey and bourbon. The apps were great! There were a few that sounded amazing but we went with fried pickles and deviled eggs, which I would 100% get again. The steak and fries was alright. The steak was cooked well, a lovely mid-rare. It lacked a bit of flavor in the steak and sauce unfortunately and my steak was a tiny bit cold. The duck fat fries were super crispy and delicious! The shrimp and grits were great - my friend loved them. Grits were cooked well and comparable to southern grits. Shrimp was also lovely as was the gravy. I've now gone to Village Whiskey a few times and I thought I'd finally give it a review. First of all, I love the atmosphere. The establishment has two sides, one featuring a bar with seating and the other being a straight up dining room. Both areas are quite cozy and stylish. The food here is nice, with great burgers and other flavorful dishes. I've especially enjoyed the charcuterie board, the Roasted Poblano Cornbread (highly recommended!), and the Blackened Catfish. During each visit I've made to Village Whiskey, the service has always been friendly, though on one recent occasion my server was a bit slow. Village Whiskey is a great place to enjoy a good meal in a nice atmosphere, and I'll definitely return. read more

It's a small place moving up into two sections, but it's great. I like the atmosphere the choice of whiskey's. I didn't really eat, but the whiskey that I tried was perfect. The house old-fashioned was spot on a friend of mine's. Got the whiskey flight and he enjoyed everyone that he tried as a friendly. The staff was welcoming. It's a little cramped, but in a good way, get to talk to people discuss the whiskeys next time. I'm in town. I'm gonna visit. I stopped by Village Whiskey on a Saturday around 5pm with the wife. We had an indoor reservation but since it was empty when we arrived, they let us sit outside. We order a few items off the happy hour menu, the whipped ricotta, meat and cheese plate and deviled eggs. Everything was really tasty, especially the ricotta. I might have licked the plate clean, it was that good. Next, my wife got a burger and I got the Bronzino. I wasn't a huge fan of the mustardy sauce, which was a tad oily for me, but I still enjoyed my meal. They have a good amount of options, which was nice. The environment though left a lot to be desired. The restaurant is dominated by the bar and features dark wood paneling and a classic rock playlist. This place is best for groups of two or three with limited seating indoors, but there is outdoor seating as well. I tried the flight of three Pennsylvania-based whiskeys. I didn't really care for any of them, but Pennsylvania isn't really known for its whiskey. The cocktail menu is quite expansive and the food that they brought out smelled good, so I would be interested in returning to try something else. I used to come here a lot a few years ago, but I wanted to try it out again before writing my official review. Needless to say my boyfriend and I went for brunch this Sunday. There is a restaurant side and bar side but you can sit at the high tops in the bar and be served as well which is what we selected when making our reservation. We were the only table on the bar side at 11:45. Our waiter was attentive and kind. When they were out of my first mocktail choice he immediately recommended his favorite for replacement, the ginger beer which was very refreshing. We didn't love the fried pickles because they weren't slices as we expected/what you'd expected from fried pickles. The chunks were too juicy to bite into while hot and the breading was falling off. I have to say this was our only negative, hence the 4 stars. Our sandwiches (one burger and one chicken milanese) were both delicious and just as we expected. The duck fat fries were what my boyfriend was most excited to try as he had never been here before, and they definitely exceeded his expectations! Wanted a burger that wasn't fast food, and this place totally fit the bill for an impromptu let's grab a quick and easy dinner. Scotch egg was really nice with the eggplant "relish", not to mention perfect yolk. Deviled eggs were standard and yum Duck fries were phenomenal, perfect crisp. I had several happy hours in mind, but is this where I decided to go. It's not a big place, but I was very impressed with their menu. And it wasn't easy to decide, there were really 5 or 6 restaurants I was considering going into. But they had a great Nashville hot chicken slider, and for 5 bucks, it was fantastic. The fried pickles made me wish i had someone with me to split them; they were crispy and served with a nice Buffalo aioli sauce, but there were just so many of them. Tough problem, I'm aware. The fried shrimp slider, i could have done without, there was just too much bread. But probably the highlight for me was drinking the Daisy Cutter beer from Half Acre in Chicago. I had not had one of these beers in maybe 8 or 9 years. And for 5 bucks, it was great to enjoy one again. They did have over 100 whiskeys, ranging from 8 dollar Irish Bushmill's to a Kinsey priced at 74 dollars. I can't think of any drink worth paying 74 bucks for... and that's not factoring in tax and tip. Still hungry we ordered the Village Burger which was delicious and juicy. Our last visit was Wednesday after 1800 so no discounts, of course, but we were excited to try some more cocktails. So, I was excited to try Village Whiskey for the first time based on recommendations and the excitement of a new experience. Sadly, I was completely underwhelmed. This feeling began with the engagement between the bartender & I which was less than welcoming and this feeling of "lost" when navigating the menu and asking questions. I was recommended the award winning burgers from a scripted point of view but not as genuine as I'd hoped, from any item on the menu. The drink (pictured) was not enjoyable, I didn't finish it. It was bourbon, so it was a great choice for me but I didn't like the particular drink. The deviled eggs weren't much of a taste, the smash burger was a bit dry and I felt as though each time I engaged the bartender, it wasn't welcoming/helpful. Sunday afternoon, the day in which I visited was quiet, not as busy as a week night (seen as walking by) but peaceful. I will say the ambiance is beautiful on the outside and inside. small neighborhood restaurant with beautiful ambiance and a well-stocked bar! i've been here previously for the burgers which were quite good. i also had the house made tater tots and the short rib cheddar fries which were both solid. i enjoy their duck fat fries too, though they taste like normal well-made fries to me. the spot was honestly pretty decent, but the steak frites were so terrible that i could not justify a higher rating. the steak frites were well-done even though i asked for medium rare, and the whole dish was just unbearably salty. the garlic fries they came with were dreadfully salty as well. i would avoid the steak frites at all costs! the service is okay, but the staff is not very attentive and do not check in often. i should have sent the steak frites back, but no one stopped by to see how the food was. we were also not offered water when we were seated, we had to request it. i would be open to coming back for a burger and/or a drink, but it would not be my first choice. the food and drinks here are not cheap either. read more

We visited for Center City Restaurant week 2023, and were incredibly disappointed in our experience. It is my understanding Village Whiskey recently opened a second dining room in the adjacent establishment; this is where we were seated. Right away I noticed the rustic ambiance, which would have been pleasant except for that it was so incredibly dark in the restaurant. We were seated directly across from the door, which was chilly. Our server was pleasant, but our visit was nearly three hours long, which was unacceptable and boring. The food was blasé at best. We chose this restaurant wanting to try something new and appreciated that a house drink was included with the $40 restaurant week charge. I liked the low ryder, but likely wouldn't come here again with the high prices and lack of flavor. It's clear that Village Whiskey is the type of restaurant trying so hard to have unique or unusual flavors that they forget to make sure their food is served hot (and that those flavors come through!). What we chose (party of 2) Drink: Mocktail/Low Ryder Appetizer: Deviled Eggs Entree: Burger/Chicken Caeser Milanese Dessert: Chocolate Mousse Cake/Fried Apple Pie Party shares 1 appetizer and 1 order of duck fries for the table, but has their own drink, entree, and dessert. The deviled eggs were fine, I liked the mustard flavor. They were served room temperature. Chicken Caesar Milanese: I was surprised that it was served as a sandwich (but not necessarily disappointed by that alone). I'm a fan of all of the flavors that should have been at play, but the lettuce was wilted due to the sauce, which I felt lacked flavor. Ultimately I was not impressed. We waited almost an hour for our final course/the check, and ultimately just asked for it to go (which made no difference). It was room temperature and by that point we just wanted to get out of there. Overall my experience was incredibly disappointing and I regret telling a coworker that I was going here, as they went the next day and had a similarly poor experience. read more
