They did a decent job pruning our tree, but we noticed several rough cuts left on the branches, and over the following week at least five healthy leafy branches fell from the tree. My biggest disappointment was the follow-up. When I contacted them about bark stripping and falling branches, they responded defensively instead of offering to inspect the tree or discuss my concerns. Three other tree companies came out and provided a free consultation. If you only need basic pruning, they may be fine. But if you value customer service and support after the job, I'd look elsewhere. read more

Careful. This company may be a sham. Carlos took $400 from me as a down payment on a tree removal project to cover an arborist report. After a month I contacted them asking where my report was to be told "by Friday" and then "tomorrow".... After hearing nothing I told them give me the report today or give me my money back. They asked for my peer payment info, which I provided, and still nothing 6 weeks since my check was cashed. Today their answering service tells me Carlos is unavailable and without cell service but that the message will be sent. Not sure how, if he's out of reach.... At this point I'm not sure this is a legit company. read more

I called New Sky on Tuesday, received a quote on Wednesday, and by Thursday afternoon my overgrown birch and several other trees in distress were perfectly pruned and shaped. Their friendly crew also took it upon themselves to point out and trim other bushes in need of a little touch up. Cleanup and respect for the property were outstanding. When was the last time you paid a door to door salesman $1800? We don't answer the phone anymore due to 4 billion telemarketing calls a month in this country, 99% of them scams. However we still do answer the doorbell. One day the doorbell rung, and there was a 20 year old, named Christian, seeking business to trim trees. Yeah, we might be interested. Within minutes there was a follow up by Walter, with estimates. We have three 50 foot redwood trees out front, along with a neighbor's 50 foot liquid amber tree. Normally I wouldn't consider trimming until January or February during an overnight freeze when the trees are dormant. But Walter said that the rates during winter are much higher due to wet hazardous conditions, and emergency work for fallen trees. Signed a contract on the spot. $500 per tree, plus $300 for cleanup and haul away of the cut branches. Paperwork showed they have $1 million in medical insurance. No charge for cutting a few major liquid amber branches overhanging on my property Three days later, a phone call alerting us of their arrival the next day. Crew of five, including a chip machine operator, an ISA certified tree climber, and three ground workers. Only Christian and the chip machine operator spoke English. "Como estas?" asked one of the workers. The tree climber, Nino, is the smallest and lightest of the five, as you have to be nimble and not too heavy to stand on those 1" branches. Got to have strength and dexterity to hold a gas chain saw in one hand, while strapped in with an emergency harness. Used a pole saw to slice away the inside secondary branches, up to 15' from the trunk. Meanwhile ground crew were using pole saws to cut off those branches too far from the trunk leaning out over our house. No ladders. One guy would point with his pole at a branch and ask "Aqui?". I would reply "Si" about the extent of my Spanish learned from watching movies from Hollywood. Work took 5 hours, and not once did anyone have to use the bathroom offered by me. Told Nino that he would be famous with his picture taken cutting trees on Yelp. Left the yard cleaner than when they started. As our ex governor would say, "hasta La vista baby"! Why do I answer the doorbell but not the phone? We get a lot of packages, and don't want to risk having packages stolen from our porch. But we have 15 stairs to climb to our front porch. My ex, whose porch is only a few steps from the front sidewalk, has valuable packages delivered to our address. And no kid wants to climb 15 stairs to get Halloween candy! read more

Despite multiple auto-generated email reconfirmations from them, they were a NO SHOW for our 8am appointment. Two hours later, I called and the office manager had no idea and needed to research with the owner. Nothing since. I called over an hour later, it went to voicemail. DO NOT USE their Chip Drop service if you are on a schedule. It is unpredictable when you'll get the chips. They may say "tomorrow," but in reality they don't know, and it could be in a week or who knows when. They are also radio silence, hard to reach, and a poor communicator. On Tuesday, I requested a Chip Drop as my landscapers were coming on Saturday to ready turn a grassy/weedy area into a bed of mulch. A couple hours later, New Sky indicated they would drop off the chips, within 48 hours. On Thursday, day of the deadline and having received no communication from them, I called, emailed, and texted. No response by email or text, but at the 3rd phone call, he picked up and said he'd drop off tomorrow. On Friday after again no communication, I called, reached him the second time. He indicated the traffic wasn't good so he didn't want to deliver it. I told him I had landscapers coming tomorrow, and he said he'd drop off tomorrow. Saturday again no communication from New Sky. I texted and called several times as my landscapers were there and wanted to spread the chips. No answer on any of the 5 calls I made. My landscapers drove 30 minutes to and 45 minutes back from my property to do the landscaping and I am very disappointed that New Sky did not drop off the chips at the time they indicated they would. Sunday I wrote my Yelp review with one star. Monday I got my chips. However, since the plants were already set in the ground by my landscapers, a bunch of plants got crushed. This wouldn't have been a problem if they'd deliver the chips BEFORE the landscaping like they said they would! Anyway, I increased by one star because I did get my chips. However, I am probably going to have to spread it all myself now since my landscapers are done with the job and went home 2 days before! read more

We cannot rave enough about this company! They came out to meet with us right away and inspected the tree we were concerned about. They did a full inspection and told us not only was the tree about 90% dead, but it was also diseased and should be removed. We received a very competitive bid (including their license and insurance info) and they showed up to do the job within a day. I was expecting maybe 4 guys, but they showed up with a full team of maybe 8 people a big truck and wood chipper. Everyone was outfitted in full safety gear, with all the equipment they needed to do the job. Their professionalism and speed was awe inspiring, and if there was a higher rating than 5 stars I would give it here. The owner even reached out to me while the job was going to check in and see how we were doing. They left the site as if they were never here, so clean, and organized! Decent job on the putting greens. Follow up and repair, not good. More than half the decomposed granite area that's supposed to be compacted is just loose sand. They told me they would cover the garden with mulch, never did. When I sent a reminder text, they ignored the text. They left bulky garbage behind that won't fit in bins. They broke a pipe but didn't tell me. I found out days later when the grass died. They discarded some decomposed granite material in some parts of the garden. All fixable things but after the final check was paid, They are not responding. read more

They came out, spent over half of the day trimming all of the trees exactly how we wanted, dealt with our crazy neighbor and cleaned up very thoroughly after the job was done. It's like they were never here. Very, very good job. 1 star is generous. They gave us an estimate, I didn't ask for a discount, just said yes to their price. I don't review often but felt compelled to do so as I was not happy with the service. We had a semi- mature olive tree moved from the front of our property to the back. I wasn't able to be on site when they started digging but as they touted this as a specialty I pushed my worries aside and let them proceed. Any arborist will tell you transplanting a tree is HIGHLY stressful to the plant. In the process you inadvertently cut off the tree from its water source by removing cutting root hairs which gather water from the soil. It's important to minimize this stress and there are a number of known techniques (obvious if you think "how can I minimize stress"). First, you want the plant to be out of the ground the minimum amount of time, therefore you dig the new hole FIRST. In that way, when you get the tree removed from the original location you can get it in its new home ASAP so it can start its healing process. Second and VERY important is to maintain a minimum size of the rootball of half the distance to the drip line. The drip line is the outer edge of the plant branches or canopy. This helps retain as many of the root hairs as possible and the all important path to water. Retaining the native soil around the tress roots helps immensely in preserving these delicate roots. Third tip is to prepare the new hole with some loose gravel for drainage and amend the native soil with lots and lots of mulch. You can add a few Agriform tablets at the bottom which release their goodness slowly, but don't fertilize heavily as this could further shock the plant while it heals over and forms new root hairs. Lastly, be sure to plant the tree a bit higher than grade. The crown, which is where the tree flares out toward the roots should never be buried as it will impede growth and the healing process. An old English Gardners proverb says - "plant it high sure the thrive, plant it low slow to grow" NEW SKY DID NONE OF THIS!!! They started digging up the tree the afternoon before transpla,t cutting some of the large roots 5-6 inches from the trunk ( it has a 10 foot drip line!). And most of the dirt had been removed from the root ball. They didn't even start to dig the new hole until the tree was out laying on its side transpirating all its water. Insult to injury they didn't have their skid steer to mover the tree onsite so the tree just lay there in shock. When I frantically asked where the supervisor was so I could save this beautiful olive, they just shrugged. No idea where he, or the equipment was. In addition they only brought 3 bags of mulch, about a 1/4 of the minimum needed. Fortunately I had mulch and sphagnum moss on site so we could properly amend. To highlight they didn't know what they were doing they dug a square hole. Ever see a square tree? Unfortunately I had to leave for a meeting and tried to communicate to the supervisor ( who finally showed up) that the tree need to be 6-8" above grade, all the moss and mulch was to be used and that before back-filling to call me, and I would come back to ok the orientation ( in case it needed to be turned). They did call only after they had left. The tree was fortunately facing the right way but was at grade or a bit lower. One bale of the sphagnum moss was untouched and they had barely given it any water. Its been about 4 weeks since the move and we have been diligent in keeping the tree watered. Olives are pretty hardy but there is definitely flagging and leaf drop on one side where they severely cut the roots. When we got the bill we asked for someone to call us as we weren't happy. Not a peep. When I asked the supervisor when I saw they didn't know what they were doing, do you guaranteed the transfer? he said yes, the cost of the transfer. What if I loose the tree? Its my fault I didn't make sure they had an arborist who would supervise the move. They are basically some guys with shovels and have no idea on how best to move a tree. 1 star because you cant give zero. read more

The quote was a little high, but I liked the professionalism of the quote process and the fact that the quote had a copy of the company's liability coverage. We have an Autumn Blaze Maple tree on our front lawn that we like to have trimmed every few years. This year we decided to have New Sky Tree Trimming service give us a proposal. Carlos came out and put our requests into a proposal, which I thought was reasonable. When the trimming was completed, we were very pleased with the results. They did have to leave the trimmings in the street in front of our house until their chipper crew could clean it up. I contacted Carlos the next day and informed him that the city's street sweeper normally comes by in the morning, and it would be nice if the trimmings were removed before then. He wasn't sure, but did manage to get the crew out to remove the trimmings that evening. We are very pleased with the results of the trim, and the response to our request to remove the branches. read more

Watch out for bait and switch method, they quoted $800 to remove a tree that had fallen over in a storm on our front lawn. I signed the contract and they came and removed the tree then called and said if I wanted the stump removed it will be $200 more. This should have been discussed and listed in the contract! We needed specific tree branches cut because criminals were using them as ladders to easily and quietly break into our backyard. We already had two thefts from criminals climbing in using those branches. Our HOA hired New Sky Tree Service to address this and other tree trimming for the entire community. Not only did New Sky not cut those branches in question, but cut everything else to further expose our privacy from the street. When we asked them for a walk through and to fix the issue, they claimed they can't cut anymore of the tree (since they already cut off so much of the wrong part of the tree). Also as some other Yelpers mentioned, these guys can't really do a tree topping job; they go cheap and only trim from the bottom up. Instead of cutting the branches on top that's coming into our airspace and blocking the view as discussed, they cut the wrong bottom with nothing left, and completely exposed our privacy. It's harder and more expensive to cut higher parts of the tress, so even when they charge you for "topping" the trees at $800/tree, only the bottom will get cut. A job for cutting only the bottom part should have only cost $400/tree. read more

Walter came to look at a tree of which I wanted the canopy reduced, but he convinced me that it would kill the tree - he was the only bidder who told me that. So I showed him in a tree in the front yard that I considered removing because its roots were cracking the pavement in my drive way and that of my neighbor. Another bidder had told me that I would need a permit from the City that would cost more then the labor to remove it. Walter told me that I would not need a permit from the City because it was set back sufficiently from the sidewalk. I received three bids on removing this tree and the New Sky Tree bid was was the lowest and the most professional; their proposal included a copy of their business licence, proof of liability insurance, and proof of workman's compensation insurance. The New Sky crew arrived at 8:30 AM the next day and removed this sizeable tree which was about 3 feet from my attached carport. Using ropes, they prevented the large cut branches from falling on my roof. The man who did the tree climbing and the cutting with the chain saw has been doing this for 15 years so he knows his stuff. The work was completed and clean up finished in less than two hours. We used New Sky Tree Service to do some large tree trimming and to cut some hedges that we have in our backyard. Lots of overgrowth that just needed to be cleaned up. There was also some ivy that needed to be removed from the side of the house. All and all it was a pretty big job. We worked with Sergio, Walter and Carlos to give us a proposal and estimate. We received the proposal for the work and were able to schedule the work for within a couple of days. There was a large crew of guys that came out and knocked it out. They came back the next day to clean up something from the proposal that got missed the first day. Very happy with the job they did. I have a willow tree in my backyard. People that knows about willow trees will immediately have a good understanding on the pain of owning one. I don't have the right equipment to trim the branches of the tree. New Sky Tree Service has helped me to trim the branches of that tree. They brought in the right amount of people for the job. Each employee has the right tools and safety equipment. They trimmed the branches of that tree and few others that I have in my backyard. They cleaned afterwards. I hired this company to thin out my 200 year old Oak Tree. I had met with 3 companies and Carlos impressed me with his knowledge of how to trim my tree carefully from the inside out and in a way that would not harm it in the cutting process. This made me feel that I could trust him to do a job that would benefit the health of the tree and look artistically pleasing as well. The price seemed high to me initially, but it was competitive with other companies and I felt more comfortable going with this company. Then after seeing them spend the whole day with a large crew, I felt I got my investment worth. They arrived at 8am and finished by 4pm with crew of 6-8 men, three men up in the tree cutting continuously except for a lunch break, and more men on the ground attending to them and chipping the branches below. Nonetheless, the crew of three were good workers although again I was told it would be a crew of five....probably why it took longer..duh!!! The point is a few broken promises. I attempted to be cool and let them get it done as the job entailed removing two 50 to 60 ft pine trees. In the end I payed the owner in full in good faith with the intention someone would return to clean up the 30 oil spills in my driveway, which leaked from all their trucks. Again I was promised something and it didn't happen. In fact after the payment they were too busy to get it done. A week later a guy came by but failed to remove the oil stains. A miscommunication between Carlos and his workers ruined the privacy in our backyard. We have a small home in a dense part of Oakland. We hired New Sky for two reasons: 1. to *top* a tall tree in our yard that had grown to block a condo neighbor's view, and 2. to thin and trim our thick jungle-like backyard, including removing a few trees altogether. We walked through the process with Carlos before the work, and we liked his suggestions. However, he did not accompany the workmen to the job, and instead of topping the tree that was crucial to our privacy, they trimmed it bottom-up -- until we realized what they were doing. Then they still had to top it to satisfy the neighbor, so we wound up with an awful, ugly skeleton-hand of a tree and our neighbors wound up with a clear overview of our backyard. The backyard was one of the major selling points of the house to begin with -- it's very small but the backyard was a little paradise. We were depressed about the whole thing for several months. Now that it's spring, the skeleton hand has started to sprout a little greenery here and there. But it will be several years before we regain any semblance of our old privacy. And that's what really kills me about this job. It was slash-and-burn, extremely hurried. They obviously wanted nothing more than to get it over with. That is unprofessional. My dad taught me to measure twice, cut once. These guys cut twice and never measured. They get one extra star for making a mediocre effort to right the situation by throwing in a few hours of stump grinding that would have cost extra. read more
