I had lunch today at New Toronto Fish & Chips. Apparently it's been around for about 90 years. It's not a fancy place (and I'm okay with that). I had haddock and chips. The quality was excellent and the cost was insanely cheap ($15.88 for a piece of fish, fries, coleslaw [which I passed on], a can of pop and gravy and that included tax!). Joey was the server and she was extremely friendly. I left about half of the fries but Joey insisted I take home the gravy so wrapped it up for me. read more

Two magic words: Beef Tallow. I happened into this nondescript house-like restaurant just off Lakeshore on Fifth St for a fix of deep fried decadence.... and nutritious halibut fish ;) The moment I bit into the old school fresh daily cut double fried chips... I KNEW it was cooked in the best fish and chip oil... beef tallow. Same with the light, crunchy fish batter. To any old school fish and chips aficionado, beef tallow, once the standard for deep frying fish and chips is now the Gold Standard. It does not taste 'beefy' at all. It just has this clean, unmistakable 'je ne sais quois' rich flavour that brings out a secret something special in a fried russet potato. Coleslaw, tartar sauce, condiments, furniture and ambience could use a facelift... nothing objectionable.. but it would shoot this place into influencer cult status. Just off of Lakeshore, this old-school fish and chip shop was a good find! The servings are generous and the staff are very friendly. There's a takeout special for 2 halibut fish and chips which was more than enough to satisfy us! Was recommended to me, as Kingsway Fish and Chips were closed for vacation I decided to try this place. I should have known better when I entered this spot, it was the definition of a hole in the wall, packets of ketchup, vinegar, salt n pepper plus it looked really run down. I ordered the halibut n chips to go and after eating this poor quality meal I was sick to my stomach by midnight. Fries were horrible fish was greasy and the Cole slaw was sickening. No frills- just juicy fresh fish, deep fried in a crispy batter, served with a heep of fries. They know what they are good at and stick to it. Went with the haddock, halibut with chips and coleslaw. I ordered the haddock and chips with a side of coleslaw. The haddock was a good, thick portion. I was expecting an amazing meal due to the great reviews. The fish was good but nothing really spectacular. I wish they had some better quality tartar sauce. The tartar sauce supplied in little packets were very sweet and did not taste like tartar sauce which kind of ruins the fish. The fries were ok. The coleslaw was quite good and refreshing with a nice vinaigrette. Overall a decent meal, good value. This place couldn't more like what it's called. Feels like the kinda place that's been there forever and 100% fits the vibe of the hood... Like, doesn't even bother trying to be obviously a restaurant when you walk by, hours are odd and unclear, and it may be older than religion. But it's exactly the fish and chips you imagine. I really wanted to like this place but there were problems. Pros- Fish and batter were good. Price was very good. Cons- Chips were crappy (yes they are hand cut but that doesn't make them good) and customer service was bad bad bad. Granted I did go in 20 minutes to close, HOWEVER, I noticed that that was the case and very politely asked if it was still ok to get take out and he said yes for sure. So, when my food was ready the guy tossed in on the counter and didn't say a word to me, I found it really rude. Lastly, I got home and realized there was no tartar sauce put in the bad nor was I asked if I wanted any... come on! It's fish and chips! Visited on a Friday afternoon and there were a few people finishing up their lunches. Cute place with bench seating at proper tables to eat in and have table service- that was a nice option. I was in the area a few days ago, and happened unexpectedly upon this restuarant. It was just before noon and made an on the spot decision to have lunch at New Toronto Fish & Chips. I am so glad I did! I had the Halibut & chips with their house cole slaw. Everything was delicious. The Halibut portion was appropriately sized and cooked in a light crispy batter. It was delicious, every bite of it. The thick cut fries were meaty and delicious. I also liked their cole slaw as it had a very light flavour and was not creamy, which I prefer. Their Halibut, I was told, is purchased from an Alaskan source and the average size they purchase is 90 lbs. That is quite the fish! Each of their fish bears a tag of authenticity which is proudly displayed at the front counter. I received quite a welcomed lesson in Halibut that day. This is a family owned business and all of the staff were quite friendly, served me well, and encouraged me to enjoy my lunch, which I did very much. I was fortunate to have taken the opportunity early in the day just before the lunch hour rush, so was able to enjoy a little extra attention than would have been possible during a busier time in their schedule. The restaurant decorum was right out of the 1970's which I adored for its nostalgia. The restaurant was clean and had a simple charm. I almost returned that very evg for dinner. That is how much I enjoyed my experience and meal. I thank the friendly staff for their wonderful service and great food. I was stuffed! It seems halibut is their feature fish, as there are ads for its nutritional value and posters for Alaskan Halibut posted prominently. Adding to their credibility is a review from the Toronto Star (though from 2004.) I had the haddock & chips. I wanted to have the experience suggested in the review from 2004, but I wasn't that impressed. The chips were sort of warm when I got them home (something I thought about when I saw him ladling them from the chip shelf instead of fresh from the deep fryer...guess he was saving those for someone else.) The haddock was good, the batter could have coated the fish more consistently, however what was there was crispy. I ate it all, despite disappointing chips. More on those chips. The chips lost them a star here. Is there anything less palatable than a tired, not hot enough, greasy chip? And they could have been thicker cut for my preference, in keeping with the English tradition. I liked how they wrapped the fish & chips. Not newsprint, but newsprint paper - echoes of England and the fish & chips of my youth. It wouldn't take much to get this place up to a higher standard, but sorry to say my 1st visit was not great. Also not impressed by the client coughing on and handling the ketchup packets at the front desk, though not the proprietors fault. Seedy as heck from the outside, but I liked that. This shop has been in business for years - decades, technically. The owners are the same, and the interior is the same. But don't let the dated decor fool you - the focus is on the *fish*. And what fish it is. We grew up spoilt by Caz's Fish & Chips in Mississauga, a fantastic fish & chips shop (that also has static, albeit somewhat updated decor, and been in operation for years and years). We'd given up on finding a local fish & chips place that could match our high standards, and were delighted when a coworker pointed us to the small little shop tucked away on a one way street. When we've been there's been halibut and haddock on the menu. The halibut is fantastic (I'm really not a fan of fish, but will happily eat the halibut all up). The batter is light and delicious, and the fish fresh, soft, and tasty. The fries are fresh and hand cut. The onion rings are fantastic, and were made to order on our visits. They're definitely worth giving a try! They also had a special on haddock on Friday, which seemed to be a regular feature. There's a Green P parking lot right beside the restaurant, and parking tends to be plentiful in the evening when we go to get dinner. Take-out is a big part of the business (the shop is quite small). The fish and chips are packed in paper boxes, usually so generously the lid bulges. The box is then wrapped in butcher/packing paper. It's not exactly newspaper, but then our newspapers aren't exactly food friendly! Really, I can't recommend this place highly enough when you're in the mood for good, honest, delicious fish & chips! read more

We've been coming here since 2007. It is consistent, well priced, and always friendly. We love their coleslaw. Their fish has always been plump and fresh. The batter is consistently tasty. The fries are sometimes a miss, though when they are a hit - 75% of the time, they are great. I also like their onion rings. I would recommend it. I have been here about 5 times and it is consistently good. The fries are incredible and the fish is everything you would expect. My only con is the lack of a lemon wedge with your fish. I think that should be mandatory with fish and chips (they may offer it but I always forget to ask) . I often come here just for a small order of chips.
