I haven't had breakfast here for a long time and I was feeling a bit under the weather today and craving some porridge. I ordered a porridge set with chow mien , satay beef instant noodles with two milk tea for take out. I was surprised how good it was comparing the last time I tried their breakfast. I'm not sure if they changed chefs or ownerships. I would definitely come back more often for authentic HK style breakfast, the milktea reminds me of the ones in HK. This New Venus Hongkong Cafe is still one of the best in town for morning big breakfasts. I haven't visited in nearly a decade. They used to accept only cash which made it inconvenient, but nowadays, they do accept credit cards as well. Love it. Excellent customer service too. I like the friendly and welcoming staffs here. Great first impression after so many years. Authentic Hong Kong foods. If you're coming from the South Bay Area, this place doesn't disappoint. We don't have very good Cantonese HK style cafes that serve good A/B/C/D/etc. breakfasts and most places are overpriced. Good value for good foods here. I paid $16 with taxes included for B-breakfast, so I left them $4 tips. $16 for everything was considered cheap! I had french fries/hash brown/two eggs/chicken steak/broccoli/carrot/etc. and comes with hot beverage of choice. Very fulfilling. Delicious foods with authentic drinks. You can order Western breakfast like toast and eggs with pan fried pork chops, deep fried fish and pan fried filet of chicken . The breakfast comes with free drinks of your choice ( ice or hot ) , milk tea , coffee , lemon tea and other non caffeinated drinks . We have ordered the pan fried pork chop . Portion is generous and the pork chop is tasty and tender . Unlike most places the pan fried pork chops are dried and tough z Great customer service . Very efficient. We came on a weekday at 8 am . After 9 am it got busy and you may have to wait for a table . The restroom is roomy , clean and organized. Good for wheelchair or handicapped people. First time trying this location since we arrived near Happy Hour. Seemed like a slow day since we were one out of two tables. Service was okay, very quick. Although, my food was a tad cold but the taste was good. Wouldn't plan to come back unless it's Happy Hour. The regular prices are a bit high. read more

We tried this new Hongkong style restaurant with my daughter while she's visiting from NY a few months ago and we liked it. Yesterday I and my sister came here for lunch after a few hour Golf practice. We're hungry, the place is quite crowded unlike last time. The place is cool with AC and we like it. The 2 ladies servers are quite pleasant and attentive. We saw so many different dishes people ordered and we wanted to try them all LOL, they all looked so yummy. We noticed the crispy noodles plate that's very attractive LOL. Ok we ordered that one and my favorite Singapore curry noodles. They have these lunch or dinner combo plates all come with soups which is very convenient and inexpensive. All under $20. We even get soups with our noodles plate too. Nice hot tea and ice cold water are plus. The combination crispy noodles we both voted for A+, the sauce is excellent, the noodles are crispy to the last bites and the portion is big. My Singapore noodles was not spicy enough per my sister, not enough curry flavor and not salty enough. For me it's flavorful and needs just a dap of salt. Anyhow, we finished the crispy noodles in a heartbeat and had some Singapore noodles to take home too. I don't know if any of them changing their gloves after picking up the dirty dishes ( plates, cups) , dirty napkins etc. They should change their gloves after cleaning up the tables before setting up the tables and serving the drinks and foods. Came here for a weekday dinner with a large group. They were accommodating, but the food in general was quite mediocre. I got the Hainan chicken which was tender but too salty. The rice it came with was also not very good. It was dry and curry flavored... I barely ate any of the rice. I also tried their chow fun (wide and flat rice noodles) with the gooey egg gravy. There are plenty of nostalgic Hong Kong styled breakfasts. I opted for the omelette and it was surprisingly very delicious. It has a sweet sauce that I was not expecting, but it tasted really good. We happened to be in this area on a weekend, and we were all craving for some Hong Kong Milk Tea and some Hong Kong Cafe Food for dinner. We decided to visit Venus Cafe. It's been a while since the last time we were here. Parking was great, tons of parking in the plaza. We were greeted right away when we walked into to the restaurant. The booth sitting was comfortable, not too tight and the overall environment was nice. We noticed the menus were different than before, more items and options. The waitress was able to take our orders quickly and food came promptly. The Hong Kong milk tea was on point, we were allowed to adjust the sugar level when we place the order. We had to order the Hong Kong style Bake Chicken with Red and white sauce with cheese over rice, it was really delicious and very fulfilling. We also ordered the beef fried rice, the portion was great, and you can taste the the "breath of a wok"(Wok Hei). The Curry Beef Stew with fried Ho Fun Noodle was great, the curry has a good aroma to it, and beef stew was very tender. We topped off our dinner with HK French toast. The French toast was full of peanut butter and favor. Food was great, portion size was great and service was excellent. The rice rolls were so good with the sauce. I loved the pieces that were pan fried more because it was crunchy on the outside but the inside was still soft. First time I've seen rice rolls being cooked this way but it's really good. Would be even better if they were pan fried for longer. The French toast was also really good. A classic appetizer for Hong Kong cafes. The hainan chicken was okay not the best that I've had. They also did not remove the bones from the chicken like other places have. The chicken wasn't that flavorful so the sauces they give you are a must. The rice also was not that flavorful. It also came with a Hong Kong Milk tea which was pretty good but make sure to mix it before you drink it because all of the syrup is at the bottom and I got a mouthful of syrup and after drinking that, the rest wasn't that sweet. The beef plate with noodles was okay can skip. The braised beef with noodles was also just okay I think you could also skip. A long standing HK style cafe in the area. Service is smart and friendly. We asked to customize the sweetness of our milk tea and she gave us a jug of condensed milk so we can adjust on our own. Milk tea is smooth, but it takes a lot of condensed milk to make it sweet. Price is not cheap anymore. A set is 16.75 with only a dish, 2 scoops of rice and a hot milk tea. No more complementary soup and garlic bread. The quantity is there since the 2 scoops of rice are undoubtedly filling. Taste is good on the food. I'm a little biased because I've been coming to this HK-style cafe for years, and the food is basically comfort food for me, no matter how I'm feeling (but especially on those days where nothing's going right). I believe leadership has changed quite a few times, and it's impressive that this establishment has managed to weather both management changes and a pandemic. I like coming here for breakfast or dinner as there are set deals that make eating here more of a bargain. For dinner, we usually order our favorites which include the salt and pepper chicken wings, beef chow fun, and pan fried rice rolls. If you're feeling especially hungry, order one of the baked dishes and I promise you'll be full and likely have leftovers. Service here is nothing to write home about, and it definitely helps if you speak and understand Cantonese as that's the biggest crowd. If you order on the phone, be prepared for someone to speak in Canto first, then switch to English. They also play old-school dramas on the TV, which really reminds me of being at my grandma's place. The regulars here all seem to know the staff and are constantly engaged in spirited conversation, which is rarer in America than Asia. I never have to wait for a table, and food comes out pretty quickly. Sometimes they can be a little slow to fill your water or bring utensils, but nothing outrageous. Everyone I've brought here seems to enjoy the food, and being a foodie whose love language is sharing food, that's always a plus in my book. read more

I've been coming here for years and never had any issues. Love the food here. Usually never a wait. Plenty of seating. Lots of parking. Today was so weird! You have to go in the back to the cashier to pay. Went to pay and sat back down to pack my food and continued my conversation with my friends. They already cleared our plates but we were still finishing up our drinks. The lady not even our serve comes to our table to tell me. "You did not tip!" We were sooooo confused. We often leave tip on table before we leave but we weren't leaving yet. I overly tipped And the worker literally had no shame asking for a tip! I'm not returning. I can't believe this. People often leave and not leave a tip after a comment like that! After speaking to others about this situation that stated they would have not left a tip after that rude comment. I used to come here regularly over 10 years ago and have fond memories of delicious comfort food. It definitely looks a little different on the inside, but the prices here are still reasonable for the times. The service was average, fast with no frills. The food however was below average. I don't know why but the food was either tasteless or too salty. Rice was hard, and I had to force myself to take some bites. The fried calamari made me wonder what calamari?! This place is one of my favorite places for comfort food! We don't live in Newark but we have made a 30-45 minute commute just to eat the delicious food! I usually order the baked pork chop with eggplant and the tomato sauce. It's TO DIE FOR. I've never had this before until a friend recommended us to go try it since it's authentic Hong Kong baked dishes. I am amazed at how flavorful it is. I've been dying to search for recipes but I'm worried it'll never come out the same. The pork chop is incredibly tender - not chewy. The rice is saucy and flavorful. And the eggplant is delightful! All together its just a tasty dish that makes you feel all gooey inside after taking your first bite. But be careful! They come out fresh of being baked so it can burn your tongue! Sadly not a go to anymore. The dishes/flavors aren't authentic enough for me as a HKer. Prices are alright but the flavor just isn't there. That includes the HK style milk tea. For todays lunch special they had the Portuguese style seafood which I ordered with pasta. My partner had Taiwanese style three cup stir fry with rice. Let me say the portions here are very generous and you most likely will have some carbs left or take over to bring home. The baked dish is quite watery imo and really lacks the "bake" and no toasted coconut shreds which I usually like. The flavor wasn't really there, no hint of coconut milk. For the three cup chicken, it wasn't three cup style. No basil. It was more like black bean chicken stir fry, didn't even take a picture cos the whole thing is just misleading. Sigh is quite descriptive of how we felt when our dishes arrived. For a Sunday lunch hour, the place was half full and not busy with takeouts either. read more

My hubby and I came here to check out this place. We like their Big Brother dish which is their signature menu. The pork cutlet and chicken wings really marinated well and were crunchy! The rice on the bottom really good, not mushy at all. We would definitely order this again in the future. They have a happy hour menu which is a very good deal if you happen to stop by between 2.30 pm -5.30 pm. They have a drink for the set and cost less than $9. This is the best tasting HK place in my opinion! I live in Milbrae where we have a ton of HK places around but I will make the drive to any Venus Cafe location because their baked dishes are amazing. My favorite is the big brother with spaghetti and baked seafood rice, usually with other HK restaurants, the baked dishes are pretty bland. Still one of the best HK style cafe I have tried in the Bay Area. Milk tea taste really good. There are plenty of parking in the parking lot. It is located in the same plaza as Sprouts market. We like the rice rolls with sauces a lot. Everything is actually considered the larger size portion comparing to other similar cafes in the area. We would definitely come back again. Got take out mid day on a Sunday. I ordered baked pork chop over rice, Singapore noodles and beef chow fun. Baked pork chop was good and tender and they give you a lot of rice. Singapore noodles and chow fun were solid with good flavor. I was impressed with the portion size of the noodles! We had leftovers for a few days. They must have changed their cook because the food is a little bit different. I usually order the sweet and sour chicken rice plate, I liked it because it didn't look nor taste like your typical Chinese restaurant sweet and sour. Instead, it seemed to have homemade sweet and sour sauce, the chicken was lightly battered and it was not oily. However the last I visited, a month ago, the dish was drowning with what seemed liked bottled sweet and sour sauce. Not a good experience. Hopefully, it will get better. read more

Nice little restaurant in the place near another restaurant. The service was good and fairly quick for the time we arrived. We arrived around 12:25 for lunch. There were only 2 other tables taken but by the time we were served our food the restaurant had filled for the lunch rush. The green beans and pork with mama's hot sauce was served and the waiter said be careful it's spicy. Which I appreciate because we had a baby. However for my adult taste buds, it was not spicy. I had to douse it in the chili sauce. Some of the green beans were not fully cooked. Shanghai chow mein with pork- I honestly wish it had some flavor. The birthday girl loved them . Felt like having rice porridge and this place did not disappoint. I love PLAIN (no hundred yr old egg- etc.) jook with just a bit of minced beef and this was it! Could have used a little chopped green onion and ginger on top but I had some at home. It was a good consistency, beef was tender and it had a nice flavor. I added a touch of hot sauce and soy. FAVORITE CHINESE NOODLE DISH - CRIPSY NOODLES Italy as a country is known for pastas but Asia as a continent is known for their noodle dishes. There are several noodles dishes from Asian countries that are my favorite. My favorite Japanese noodle dish is ramen. Regarding Vietnamese cuisine pho is not my favorite but rice vermicelli is. For Thai cuisine my favorite noodle dish is pad thai. My favorite Korean noodle dish is jajangmyeon. As a Filipino I don't like pancit l but I love pancit molo, which is similar to won ton soup. For Chinese there is one noodle dish that is my favorite. I grew up thinking most Chinese noodle dishes are chow mein or any thick noodles. Sometimes thick chow mein noodles I've eaten from Chinese restaurants made me bloated. So I did an experiment last week where I ordered three straight days from Venus Cafe. Last Wednesday I thought I ordered a crispy fried beef noodles. Instead I ordered a pan fried beef noodles. This "accident" helped me taste the difference between pan fried noodles versus crispy noodles. The stir-fried beef noodles was tasty however the more I ate this dish I was feeling bloated due to the noodles absorbing the oil. The next day I ordered tomato beef crispy noodles. Now this dish is a real test with respects to the crispy noodles. After pouring the tomato beef sauce the noodles remained crispy. The crispy noodles weren't saturated with the sauce. The more I ate the tomato beef crispy I wasn't feeling bloated or queasy. The next day, which was Good Friday, I ordered seafood crispy noodles. As with the tomato beef crispy noodles the more I ate the seafood crispy noodles I wasn't feeling queasy. Yes I know eating fried noodles three straight days was crazy. What I really love about fried crispy noodles is that they don't absorb moisture as much as pan fried noodles. Hence why I feel crispy noodles are lighter than pan fried noodles. In addition sauce like tomato beef mixes well with the crispy texture of the noodles. If I have craving for Chinese noodles I will order the tomato beef crispy noodles or the seafood crispy noodles from Venus Cafe. read more

Came here on a Saturday night. We ordered the combination soup noodle with egg noodles and porkchop baked rice. The soup noodle came out first. It wasn't hot and had a strong star anise after taste. For the baked dish, instead of having fried rice as a base, they had a yellow rice instead. The porkchop was covered in batter and tasted more like porkchop katsu. There wasn't enough sauce either.
