Sampan porridge ($13) is so creamy with a lot of ingredients, definitely add the green onions and crushed peanuts as well as white pepper and salt for more flavor. Turnip cake with XO sauce ($8) is also delicious here, it's so crunchy on the outside and tender in the inside. Love it!! Those two are must haves. We also tried chicken feet and special spare rib rice which were just ok, wouldn't order those again. Chicken feet were a bit lean and spare rib rice unfortunately didn't taste 'special' to me, even if it took 30 mins to make haha. Wasn't bad though and it's very affordable here. The place itself is very promising--it's impeccably clean and organized inside, and the staff had my takeout order ready to go right when I arrived. They definitely know how to make a great Stewed Beef Tendon Rice Roll; the flavors were rich, and the tendon was perfectly tender, which shows they have potential in the kitchen. Unfortunately, that was the only dish that really stood out. The congee we ordered was quite bland, and the texture of the plain rice rolls became hard and stale just minutes after leaving the restaurant. The turnip cake was a bit flavorless. Mingkee Deli is a pretty good traditional Chinese breakfast restaurant. Service is okay, I noticed that most don't speak English but we are still able to get by to communicate our needs. The restaurant is pretty small but they are usually quick to get out your food. I usually get the brisket rice noodle roll, either the BBQ pork or shrimp and beef rice noodle roll, preserved egg and pork porridge with fried donut, and the turnip cake with XO sauce. The rice noodle rolls are very soft and thin, which I don't mind. The turnip cake with XO sauce I'd probably prefer without the XO sauce in my own preference, but I like how they always come out piping hot and crispy. The brisket rice noodle roll is my favorite kind to get out of the rice noodle rolls, but the second time I got it, it did taste a bit different where it seemed to lack some flavor compared to the first time, but was fixable with some added soy sauce and chili oil. Here, you do have to ask for those condiments, as they do not have it on the table. Overall, I'd keep coming back and with the added soy sauce and chili oil, they make it a whole lot better. read more

Yin Ji in Milpitas is much much better than Mingkee .I came twice and it got worse each time. Its good to go when you feel sick so you wont taste any difference as the congee is bland its very healthy for sure no msg. I didn't realize and dropped it cuz it was sooo hot and dumped half of the bowl on me and the table. After cleaning up. They never helped. I ate most of the jook which had no flavor. In the end, I chose a place called Mingkee Newark.At first, I just wanted something simple -- a plate of steamed rice rolls and a bowl of congee -- and then head home.But wow... once you start eating, you'll know the difference between ordinary and outstanding.I first ordered a lotus-leaf steamed rice with preserved-vegetable pork patty and a cup of iced stone-ground soy milk.I've never been a fan of preserved vegetables, and I usually never choose dishes made with them. But after trying this lotus-leaf preserved-vegetable pork patty rice, it completely changed my relationship with preserved vegetables.The moment I opened the lotus leaf, the fragrance of the leaf filled the air. The very first bite -- with the subtle lotus-leaf aroma and the freshly hand-chopped pork patty mixed with preserved vegetables -- was simply beyond words.Then I took a sip of the iced stone-ground soy milk and immediately knew it was totally different from the kind you buy at a supermarket. First time trying this place. Was looking for some Hong Kong style congee to rebalance my heavy eating habits. Walked in on a weekday morning. Very clean and tidy . Staff was very kind and informative without being too pushy. Recommended a lotus wrap dish. We liked it but it will take maybe 20 minutes for them to make it and steam it. I do like how fresh everything was. Congee was delicious ! Perfectly velvety. Very happy with the combo meals ! Came here for a quick lunch. Tried their shrimp and youtiao. The chang fen here is cooked all in one sheet and covers the whole dish. As a result, the actual portion of rice pancake is quite generous and it is more solid with more of a bite than other places (where it is more gooey). Having missed out opportunity to try this place out then, we made it a point this time while we were in Newark to stop by. Not a big fan of their ordering system, as you need to order at the counter first, pay, and then your order arrives at your table after you're seated. This creates a bit of a bottleneck as you're forced to quickly decide what you want to eat, while holding up the queue behind you. Additionally, credit card is only accepted for orders of $25 or over. So for smaller parties, be sure to bring cash. It was just me and my wife this time, and we weren't particularly hungry. So we wound up just sharing a Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll, Preserved Egg & Pork Porridge, and a side of Chinese Donuts. The food was pretty good, and the portion sizes are on the larger end. Aside from the ordering process, my only other complaint is the service. They definitely prioritize large parties coming in over individuals. Despite being the first (and only) person at the counter waiting to be helped so I could add a few more items to our order, the lady manning the front completely ignored me and attempted to help a group who had just walked in. Lastly, I ordered a clay pot rice (not pictured). The rice was pretty clumpy and the cured meat in it was extremely hard to chew. Overall, I was not super impressed with the food. The service was pretty good though! The lady that worked the front was very welcoming and explained to us that she wants this restaurant to give the vibe of how it would be like in China. There are plenty of seats, and the ambiance is casual. You can order at your table via the QR code or at the counter. I chose the latter. The staff were friendly and helpful as I chose my food items. Cantonese, Mandarin, and English were spoken. I was led to a table, and I took a seat. There was a TV alongside screens displaying their menu items above the kitchen area. The menu is simple. So excited to see them opened in the east bay! Came on a weekday night - there's no wait but they are pretty busy. You first order and pay before sitting down. Their rice noodle rolls are definitely their specialty. It is so thin and smooth which goes so well with the savory ingredients (beef brisket/ pork liver/ shrimp etc) and soy sauce. They also have tons of porridge options and you will definitely find one that you like. I enjoyed their sampan porridge which contains seafood and pork. Absolutely in love that they finally open in Newark! Their original in Cupertino location is always too far and too long of a wait! They just opened this past week and I couldn't wait to try, and they didn't disappoint~ The wait time was fair, about 15-20 'minutes wait outside, you pay for your order before sitting down so know what you want and you can save some time. Once ordered, they food came relatively fast, and all of them taste great! The only feedback is the Almond paste dessert came first before anything else, and the donut rice noodle roll portions are too big. This was my first time here recommended by a friend that ate here often. Brought family there to have brunch. We had the Jook(need to mix everything they give to you & add white pepper to taste), liver/kidney, shrimp noodle, soy milk, pot sticker, pork Knuckles clay pot, everything was good. Only comment was that the sweet soy sauce used was not the right consistency told the waitress and she went to test the sweet soy sauce used. We tried the rice noodles this time since it has the most reviews, but last time my friend had the porridge and said there are easily better places nearby, too. I had the shrimp and beef and added mushroom. The shrimp and beef tasted good, but they were stingy in the amount they filled in the noodles compared to other places. The mushrooms tasted old and the quality of the rice noodles was very subpar -- stringy in many areas. This place offers only counter service and they don't provide any services that require tipping but when I selected "no tip" on the screen the lady made a fit about it and reset the screen to make me choose a tip. My friend and I were excited to try this place, as we are big fans of rice porridge and rice noodle rolls. We were supremely disappointed. The fish in both the porridge and noodle rolls were inedible: instead of soft and meaty, the fish was rubbery and even crunchy (not exaggerating) and full of fibers that were too tough to chew. We had to pick out all the fish and toss it out. The porridge and noodle parts, however, were really good. I am willing to try again and avoid the fish to see if this review can be improved. Another reason for bad review: I had placed my order online using Hungry Panda. I received my email confirmation but when I got to the restaurant, the waitress insisted that online ordering was not available at this location and asked me to order and pay again, which I did. Three hours later my online order was confirmed and my credit card was charged. I called Hungry Panda to complain and after verifying my order with the restaurant, they have promised to refund me. So just a warning that the staff doesn't seem to know that online ordering has been implemented at this location (at least this one waitress who was adamant with me). Though I will not be rushing back, I am willing to try one more time once they work out the kinks of this new location. read more
