I walked in with no expectations and was completely blown away! From the spiral staircase entrance to the airy yet cozy yoga room and the serene garden, the space is absolutely beautiful. The class itself was definitely challenging, but I loved that it was Ashtanga. The focus was on yoga, holding poses, and deepening the practice, not just on working out (though it was definitely a workout too!). I really appreciated that balance. The instructor was wonderful. Very knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and patient. Even though it was clear I'm newer and less experienced, she made me feel comfortable and supported every step of the way. This studio is nice! You walk up a spiral staircase to one of two studios, which are both dimly lit with brick. You can rent a mat for $5 if needed (Apple Pay accepted). Classes are always moderately tough and the teachers know what they're talking about. Adjustments are minimal and helpful. The atmosphere is soothing. It's a decent class. This was my first time trying yoga, and man! Was it an experience. We found this yoga place on Groupon and since me and my best friend were looking for things to try to become a bit more active, this stood out because the price was unbelievable. The studio was beautiful, and we decided to try the beginners yoga. OMG! We truly did believe that beginners yoga was something completely different because once we started it was on GO the entire hour. Whew! That was intense!! We felt like we were the only beginners in the class because everyone else knew what to do, and what to expect. Who knew stretching could make the body ache, hurt and sweat so much? Lol. Would not recommend for ashtanga practitioners visiting NYC or yoga practitioners that enjoy the freedom to do what's best for their bodies. I took the all levels ashtanga class. I have been doing ashtanga yoga for 10 years.... In the middle of backbends the instructor told me to leave if I didn't do exactly what he said. It took me a moment to realize that I was being berated for not following the sequence exactly as it was being called out because I was so deep in my own practice. He was yelling at me during my drop back and I am glad I did not get injured. If you're looking to learn ashtanga and feel called to the spiritual aspects of yoga, please do not come here. It breaks my heart to see Ashtanga yoga being taught like this. No humility, all ego. Alex, the instructor, is so full of himself that he feels like he can dictate how other people practice. Seems like insecurity to me. He made up his own opening mantra that was a mix of English/Sanskrit and chanted in a fake Indian accent (not my taste). His count is off and the only thing traditional about his ashtanga class was 5 sets of navasana, which I found very odd. We didn't even do 5 Sun A's. The intentions of this place just feels wrong. It's westernized yoga in the worst way. And I am truly traumatized by what I experienced here. In my 10 years of practice I have never had a teacher berate me in front of the class while practicing and tell me to leave if I did not obey his every word. I guess I got the real New York experience. I would like to clarify for everyone that we were practicing backbends and I took a moment to drop back as we were transitioning to the next posture and was asked to leave. I was not practicing my own sequence. You can see the energy and vibe of this place simply from looking at the response on Google reviews. No accountability and not an accurate depiction of what occurred. I was following the sequence 90%. I would say I modified based on my own practice 10% throughout the class. Alex yelled at me to do exactly as he said or leave. I chose to leave. Come practice here if you want to see a white man play spiritual guru. Just warning: you may be verbally abused by Alex. Reading other reviews it seems like this is not the only time he has berated students openly in class. read more

Beautiful new studio that feels like an oasis in the middle of a crazy neighborhood. I was there for a "led Ashtanga" class. The class was a modified half primary + a few shalabhasanas and Camel pose, and 10 minutes of meditation, all adding up to 60 minutes. It felt a bit rushed to me vs. a typical 90 minute Primary or Half Primary class, as the instructor had to cut out a lot from the sequence: - Suryanamaskar A and B were each done only 3 times not 5. - There were no vinyasas between the two sides for all the seated poses. - Janu B and C, Mary B and D were all cut (vs. just modified into something else). - There were no inversions!!! (So this was the main thing that made it not feel like a full yoga class for me). Also I think there were no hands on assists/adjustments. On the flip side it was very beginner friendly as the instructor gave modifications throughout. Secondly the instructor gave really good cues for alignment especially focusing on bandhas which not everyone consistently does. Overall this particular class was maybe not exactly what I am looking for, but I might come back and try a 90 minute class. And I do see how their classes are structured to be more accessible to beginners so definitely try one and see if it works for you. read more

I've practiced Ashtanga since 2007 (in different cities and even in different countries) but this is my favorite yoga studio for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the instruction is spot on with respect and observation where the individual student is at. But secondly, and perhaps, more importantly, the space is an oasis : high ceilings, wood beams, fire place, plants, trees, art and lots of yoga books. It is a space geared to be a place of nurturing and a place of serious practice. Alex, the studio's director, has put so much of himself into the space it's impossible not to feel the sincerity in every detail. An absolute gem in the heart of St. Marks place! I've walked past this place probably a thousand times and never noticed it, but so glad I finally discovered it through ClassPass. First off, the space is HUGE (honestly haven't seen as spacious of a studio as this one anywhere in Manhattan). Second, the brick wall, lit candles, and real wood-burning fire place create such a lovely atmosphere to do yoga in! Third, the class itself was super engaging and hands-on. Left this place feeling really energized and awakened. I'm definitely coming back! :) the only suggestion I have is maybe introducing a few essential oils into the space. aromatherapy would make this place absolutely perfect! read more

Great place!....Unless you're allergic to latex. They have a free trial class for new members. I had to reschedule it last minute and the owner allowed me to do that, which was cool. The studio itself is BEAUTIFUL. It's 2 floors of former studio apartments which have hardwood floors, lots of dried flowers, and they burn Palo Santo which I really like. They offer led Ashtanga classes at several levels and traditional Mysore practice. I tried a lower-level class (ie, not the full primary series.) It was very good, instructor watched us closely instead of doing the exercises himself (if you don't know this: for Ashtanga the poses are the same each time, so they don't need to demo other than at the very beginner class) and offered specific individualized corrections and hands-on assists. Unfortunately I won't be going back because almost all of their mats are natural rubber, (which, if you don't know, is the same thing as latex), and I'm allergic. The owner did very kindly find a non-latex mat I could use, but by the end of the class the entire room smelled strongly of latex and my skin was starting to crawl because everyone else's mats were made of it and it was getting into the air. (NOTE: do NOT worry about this if you're not allergic to latex. I don't think you would notice the smell or be bothered by it. This is just something I'm exceptionally sensitive to because of my allergy. My fellow latex-allergy-havers will know what I'm talking about!) So, all in all great place and highly recommended for most people, but you may want to skip it if you have a latex allergy. read more

Truly one of the most serene and relaxing places to unwind and work on your practice. Though I do not consider myself advanced, I have been practicing with Alex on and off for years and he is a great teacher; probably the most thoughtful yoga teacher I've encountered. The space he has created on St. Mark's Place is an oasis (its also massive so plenty of space). There is often a warm fire burning during the class, and there is beautiful artwork arranged throughout the space. Overall, New Vibe has a meticulously crafted environment that contributes to getting your mind and body into the right place. They also have an infrared sauna which is amazing when combined with yoga. Since I get lazy from time to time and get away from my practice; I occasionally attend the led classes by one of the other teachers and all of them have been great (especially if you're a beginner). Wow! This place is more than just a yoga studio. As soon as you walk in you feel like you have been transported to a serene oasis right in the middle of NYC! The place is immaculate, smells amazing and the vibe is so relaxing, soothing and the art work is a reason to visit all on its own! I was greeted by the owner personally, and since it was my first real time doing ashtanga yoga, was given the personalized attention I needed to feel safe, secure and accomplished! Alex is an amazing teacher - patient, sincere and super knowledgable. I am addicted to his calming voice and really appreciated the instruction. I felt like I learned more in one hour at New VIbe about my own practice than I have all year at some other studios! I have been there for the morning classes and also have joined online since I am not always in NYC. I really like that there is that option as well.
