I really like this place. It is nowhere near me, so I rarely go. For many years I drove past it on the way to a LARP I used to attend, and this was a good place to stop for a quick lunch. Recently, I went to another type of even that was near there, so I stopped here, and was delighted to find that it was still open...and still just as good. Mee Shane is one of the better chinese food options in the Olney area. They're open late, are usually always able to deliver (a rarity these days) and has some dishes with great flavor. We really like their steamed dumplings, crispy beef and kung pao chicken. Personally I am not a fan of the wonton soup as it really doesn't have any flavor to it other than salt. My biggest reason for not ranking them higher, is while they can be good, they are also wildly inconsistent. It's never bad, but sometimes food is overcooked, sometimes it's drenched in sauce and sometimes it's dry. I just wish the dishes were consistent because when they get it right it's great! read more

Got the Combination London this time & I'm sorry to say that it is not good. The noodles are hard & sticky. The was very little meat (pork, chicken & shrimp) which was at the very bottom. I found 1 shrimp. I do not recommend this food item. I also had shrimp toast, I didn't take a picture because I ate them in the car. This is my second time ordering that, they come 2 in an order, regular size for a reasonable price. They are good, my only concern is that there was a lot of grease on them. I will still continue to come here because it is convenient & I still like the Egg Foo Young (have had it 3 times). I do recommend ordering from here. It's really crazy how reviews can be so far apart. I definitely thought a 4 star rating couldn't be that bad. Wrong. This restaurant only sold Chinese food (meaning no wings and mambo sauce). Again, I was fooled. 1. Spring rolls: crispy but the filling was minimal with no flavor. 2. Shrimp egg foo young: cakes are mixed with the sauce so it's difficult to count how many in the order. Taste was just ok. 3. Beef with mixed vegetables: standard nothing special or bad. 4. General Tso's chicken: one of the worst I've had. The chicken was over cooked (or old chicken cooked again) and super chewy. 5. Rice: you can't mess this up, right? Well the rice was fine but I guess this restaurant is on a mission to control your carb intake. I've never seen rice given in the extra small carryout box. Maybe this is just a cost savings. Overall, this restaurant is so bad, I had to come out of retirement to write this review. I just don't want anyone else to suffer the way I did. The food at this small carryout restaurant has been consistently good through all the years that we have been ordering there. That has not changed, and I felt compelled to complement them on their cooking using this forum. They know how to cook Chinese food. I cook Chinese routinely but can't replicate what they do. Very authentic flavors and just delicious. Very reasonably priced as well. Would highly recommend for some excellent local Chinese food. We had their Kung Pao Chicken, Eggplant with garlic sauce (definitely worth trying even if you don't think you like eggplant), Shrimp with snow peas, House Special Lo Mein. Everything delicious. First time trying this place. We had lunch here and we liked it. Generally Chinese take-out is mostly all the same with slight variations. I had the General Tso chicken and the sauce was good. It lacked spice as far as heat goes, which was disappointing, but that's how most places do it these days. The fried rice that came with the meal was better than many other places I've eaten. It had a nice flavor and it was more than just rice mixed in a wok. Prices are reasonable and the portions are generous. These take-out places tend to be personal preference. I have lived in Ashton for 2 years now, and have driven past Mee Shane quite often. I've never stopped in until yesterday, and I have to tell you, I'm very happy that I finally chose to order from this restaurant. The eggrolls and spring rolls were delicious. I also ordered the Sesame Chicken, General's Chicken, and Pepper Beef. Normally, these dishes are either too sweet, too salty, or use cuts of meat that feel rather unidentifiable--not the case with Mee Shane. The salty/sweet ratio was perfect. The General's Chicken could have been MUCH spicier (there wasn't any spice, which was disappointing) but the flavor overall was excellent. When I want Asian food, I normally choose Thai because Chinese food is almost always disappointing. I will, however, order from Mee Shane again. Excellent all-around. read more

Unfortunately we tried this place after seeing so many good reviews. Unfortunately, we will not be going back. The crispy beef was not crispy and was more of a mushy consistency. We've had Chinese carryout from a different Chinese restaurant and the beef was crispy, so it's not because of it being steamed during the drive. The General Tso chicken really didn't have much flavor and looks a little gray which you can't really see in the photo, but I do notice it. The Chicken and Broccoli was more broccoli and carrots than it was chicken. However this was the best of the entrees that we ordered. I really wish this experience would have been better as I'd love to support local restaurants, but unfortunately I won't be going back and I won't be keeping any leftovers. read more

I honestly don't know where some of these one stars are coming from. It's confusing because no other carry outs cook food on this level. Carryouts are carryouts but then there's Mee Shane. Let me begin by saying I have been coming to Mee Shane for around 10 years . Throughout my time I have seen it go through ups and downs. When a carry out like this has been around for over 30 years there is bound to be some rough spots because chefs come and go . One constant is the owners. They have been operating this carry out since the beginning and do their best to satisfy their customers. They know names, preferences etc. Recently, it's been on fire, rocking away awesome food in 2020! This is an old school carry out not a corporate Panda Express or something. For the most part this has pretty much always been a SOLID choice of mine. Keep in mind that when ordering carry out try to eat your food right away or else dishes steam in the carry out boxes, crispy food get soft etc basic understanding of food . When you eat Mee Shane's dishes right away you will be surprised "how out of this world" the taste is . Onto the dishes. I prefer vegetables myself. They cook great veggie dishes where the product is crispy not mushy. I like Bean Cake with Mixed Vegetables which is basically tofu with carrots, broccoli, straw mushrooms tossed in a slightly thick soy sauce based sauce. Their Szechuan String Beans are phenomenal! Cooked crispy and tossed with caramelized onion, this is a great accompaniment to multi-dish orders. Spring rolls are great too although not super packed with veggies it still packs a punch enough to satisfy your need for something fried. By far the best Chinese takeout in the Ashton/Olney area! I have been getting meals here for years. I think their woks are hotter or something because fried rices taste smokier, sauces are thicker, and vegetables stay crispier for longer. They have many dishes that include proteins from chicken to pork to beef to scallops to fish to jumbo shrimp etc even tofu, string beans, snow peas etc the variety is vast. If I had to say what my main favorites are I would have to say their famous homemade dumplings . They are unbelievable, make sure to get them pan fried for a little browning on one side. My other favorite dish would be the Sesame Chicken! Each order is freshly made unlike the shopping mall food court chicken that has been sitting out all day. Lastly, treat yourself to a Seafood Combo. It's white sauce based dish with crispy fish filet , jumbo shrimp, scallops and vegetables. This an old school carry out that has the owners working there day in day out. When I am out of town it's impossible to find Chinese takeout on this level. This restaurant is an oasis for good Chinese American food. This is not the food from China however it is an evolution of Chinese food with an American palette. Most dumplings at other restaurants are small. The Mee Shane dumplings are large and delicious. The Sesame Chicken is ridiculously delicious and addictive. If you can, try the roast duck and the chow fun. I could eat that everyday. My wife and I had a chinese craving and decided to our luck out on some of the local spots. Having moved to the area recently from Gaithersburg, we're looking for a new Chinese Take-Out joint. After reading the reviews on Yelp, Mee Shane Restaurant looked promising. Prices are great here! We ordered two dinner combos: 7.99 for the dish, fried rice and egg roll. For 50 cents more, you can add a side of soup. Ordering was quick and easy. Service was friendly and 15 minutes later, my order was ready to pick up! It was hot, packaged and ready for me to take out the door. There are two small tables up front to sit at, in case you feel like eating in. I had ordered the Orange Chicken Combo (with Hot and Sour Soup) and my WIfe had ordered the Orange Chicken (with Egg Drop) When we pulled everything out of the bag, we were impressed to see how large the portions were! There was plenty of food. The soup alone is enough for two people! Definitely worth the 50 cent upgrade. The large portion of the main dish is accompanied by a healthy side of fried rice and a crisp, hot egg roll. Presentation was nice. Nothing was slopped together or swimming in sauce. The Hot and Sour soup had a nice sour taste to it, but it soon waned, leaving you with the taste of bland corn starch. It was missing something, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. The chicken was hot and crisp. It was prepared in a nice tempura batter, which made for little fluffy, crisp dumplings. The sauce was sweet and tangy and wasn't overpowering. The chicken stayed crisp and did not get soggy, like it can be with some other places. The fried rice was your standard fried rice, enjoyable, but nothing outstanding. The egg roll was hot and crisp, as well. It was not overly greasy, nor did it lack on filling. All in all, we enjoyed our meal and definitely had plenty left over (because we were quite full!) So why three stars? Well, several things. None of my food was bad. I enjoyed it all, but wasn't "wowed" like I have been at my old chinese take-out restaurant. First: The spicy dishes lack spice. It's as though the papers were waved over them. I'm one of the few who likes a little heat in his dish. This didn't have any. Second: The General Tso's and Orange chicken were essentially the same dish. This is pretty common and most chinese places, but really good ones will have distinct dishes. The Orange Chicken and Mee Shane had a little orange peel after taste (and the general tso's had a little smokey flavor), but if you put the two dishes side by side and I was blindfolded...I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Third: The soups. They're relatively bland. Good flavor up front, but nothing that tantalizes the pallet. You're left wondering what happened. They also don't' come with the fresh, fried won-tons that most restaurants provide. These were pre-packaged noodles, similar to La Choy noodles you find in the stores. Finally: Egg rolls. Great Egg rolls are hard to find. Theses were decent. They were crisp and not greasy, but were full of cabbage. I think at the end of mine, I got a nice bite of pork, but other than that, it was relatively uneventful. All in all, it's a pretty decent joint. Will I go back? Of course! I enjoyed my meal. There are more items to try and decisions to render on the place. The prices are great, portion sizes are huge, and it will fulfill your chinese craving if you want take-out. Worth a try if you're in the area! To get a 4 or 5 star review from me, though, it just needs to make a few improvements. Then it will be stellar! read more

They have this tint window. When I looked through it to see how things were going with my food I discovered that they don't use gloves to touch different foods. Wet and all. He touched everything. His pants then the food, whiped his head with his hand then back to cooking with no gloves. This place is very unsanitary. They try to block your view of your food being prepared and I like to see mine being cooked. I'm ashamed to have been hungry and went here. I won't again though. I have no idea how this place has any decent reviews. I feel bad for the people of Olney/Ashton if this is one of your best options. We ordered take-out. It was ready when we got there (score!), but I wasn't overly impressed with anything we got. Veggie spring rolls were nothing more than cabbage rolled in a wonton. The Chinese Mixed Vegetables were overcooked and absolutely drowning in sauce. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was like nothing I've ever had. It was the traditional (read: bright red/orange) sauce, but instead of the customary onions, green peppers, and pineapple the only thing they added were pieces of dill pickles. Blah. Was told they had to cancel my order with no explanation! They would refund my money. I asked for owner to call to explain what happened, no one called. I am recovering from a heart attack and my husband has dementia. This left us with no dinner. Found some hot dogs in freezer. This used to be my favorite Chinese Carry-Out restaurant in the area, but something has seriously changed. I'm shocked at how terrible the Carry-Out food was that I ordered while In the restaurant last night (so there's no excuse for it sitting around while I was on my way.). Ordered a hot and sour soup, egg roll, orange chicken, and beef with garlic sauce. The beef I specified spicy and is labeled "hot and spicy" on the menu. It tasted absolutely flavorless, was soggy textured, mostly vegetable and didn't resemble the taste or appearance of the dish from the 100+ Chinese restaurants I've ordered it at before. The orange chicken was even worse!! It was mushy, not crisp at all. The chicken pieces were such gross cuts that I actually had to spit it out! The paper container was not suitable to hold the sauce. The egg roll and hot and sour soup were even disappointing. They have cut corners with purchased chow mein noodles, cheap paper containers, and miniature sides of rice. Really disappointed. Won't be back. Threw $30 away; don't make same mistake. read more

As far as Chinese takeout, this is one of the best places around. In the past the flavor was variable, never bad, but sometimes it was much tastier than others. But in the last year or two, every time I order, it is wonderful. It is family run and the people are wonderful. It makes me happy to spend my money there. read more
