Dinner last night at New Wonjo. Excellent service and the food was excellent. What I didn't like was the cramped seating and small portions. We ordered the premium beef dinner for four. It came with one slice of king mushroom that was barely enough for one person let alone four. The ban chan consisted of some kimchi cabbage and one small plate of pickled beets and pineapple. The egg soufflé was great but not enough for four people and when we asked if we could get another one they said they would charge for it. The ban chan did not include fish cake, bean sprouts, radish, or any of the typical ban chan you would expect other than the cabbage kimchi. The beef was tender and tasty though. read more

Honestly don't see why this place is so popular and quite packed every time we went. They do have an extensive menu, and it's in the middle of ktown, but honestly, the quality of the food is meh. The BBQ combo is not good value, as only 2/3 of the meat is edible. The Seolleongtang is the blandest I have ever had, not because of the lack of salt which of course you add on your own, but it's so watered down you cannot taste any meat or bone broth flavor. Love the soon tofu and the ban chan is delicious. We can back for 2nd time. The ban chan is different from last time. We got a Try the combo of fried mackerel & non spicy soon tofu. Their tofu is so good I don't even want any spicy to mask the tofu nature flavor. Whenever I'm in New York, I always go to New Wonjo Restaurant in West 32nd Street whether to have lunch or dinner. New Wonjo is one of my favorite Korean Restaurant in Manhattan that specializes in Korean Barbecue. If its not busy, you are seated promptly and your server takes care of you right away. This is a great place for Korean food. We came here as a family on a Monday around 4pm and we were seated immediately. The restaurant upstairs is very nicely decorated with lots of pictures and art. We ordered the Jap Che (glass noodles)with beef and the Dduk Boki (rice cake/gnocchi) and the Je Yook Gui (spicy sliced pork) to be grilled table-side. All of these were great and the BBQ order came with plenty of sides. Be warned, if it says spicy, it's spicy; Korean cuisine does not mess around when something is labeled as "spicy". They have lots a drink offerings and several beer options, I ordered an Allagash. We arrived a little before 8 but didn't get seated until 8:10. We ordered the meat mania set and a small seafood pancake for share. I've been eating here for years now. I love the way they bring tons of small bites before the main dish arrives. Of course my favorite is the kimchi (obviously lol). I went to Wonjo a few times in the late 2000s, before its apparent transformation into New Wonjo. I'm sure the restaurant changed in significant ways, but my first thought upon walking in was, "Oh yea, this place! I've been here before." I rolled in at 2:30 on a Wednesday morning, for a late-night sa-cha meal, the fourth and final stop of a long, fun night. We'd started with a giant party, a diverse group of 200+ people, of which about 20 made it to noraebang. When we walked into New Wonjo, we were eight or nine strong, and I think all but one or two of us were Korean. I was honestly proud of everyone. The restaurant was comfortingly familiar, but I might have felt that way even if I'd never been before. The vibe was pleasant and homey, quiet at that hour. We took over a big table upstairs and got great service. We had an entire meal, complete with banchan and possibly soju. We ordered naengmyun, bulgogi, and kimchi jjigae, and everything hit the spot. I don't know if you've had cold noodles and Korean barbecue after hours of steady drinking, but they don't have to be that good to be delicious. Wonjo's food, I believe, is legitimately good, making the place worth visiting day or night. read more

It's good for a last minute kbbq craving, especially during peak hours, but I wouldn't choose this as a top spot to make plans in advanced or take friends who are visiting. My friend and I came on a Friday at around 7:45 after trying another spot that was completely packed. The restaurant is not the largest, but we only had to wait 5-10 minutes before we were seated. They have a pretty extensive menu, but we opted to go with the premium beef set that gives you 3 cuts of beef plus the standard banchan, egg, and tofu stew. The meat was all good quality but I wouldn't say exceptional. I do appreciate though that the servers cook it for you here and they're pretty efficient. The banchan was ok but honestly not my favorite. They won't give you any refills unless you ask, which we did for the kimchi. You can also opt to add a mini naengmyeon if you'd like, which we did. The naengmyeon was solid and a small one split between two people was plenty. Overall, we left the meal feeling extremely stuffed. The two downsides for this restaurant was first that they forgot about the naengmyeon and we had to ask for it, which is not the biggest deal. The second (and worse) downside was that they only gave us like 5 pieces of rice paper for the bbq and when we asked for more, said they were all out. The rice paper is one of my favorite parts of kbbq, so for me this was pretty inexcusable. So to summarize, decent kbbq for the price but lacking in some aspects of service especially around the accompanying dishes. I probably wouldn't go back because of this given the variety of kbbq restaurants in the area, but if you're in a pinch it's not a bad choice. read more

The goal this time around was getting some good kbbq for my friend and we ended up going to New Wonjo because it was the most price efficient and I wasn't crazy hungry. Turns out it is a very solid spot! Walking in they have the first floor that is non-bbq and top floor that is bbq! All the staff were nice and I noticed majority woman staff as I'm used to majority kkq/asian restaurants to be young asian men. It was nice to see and gave a very relaxed and homey experience. Anyway they have a nice bbq set called the Wonjo combo for about $94 for 2 with 3 meats and banchan which is a steal considering the average ones are usually starting at $60-80 pp. All the food was delicious and the quality of the meats were impressive for the cost. Loved all the small different takes of the regular banchan as well as some new additions. For example, they had a dried squid I've never gotten before. The marinated galbi was my favorite and I didn't even add any sauce and the texture was perfect!!! This is one of the places that will do the cooking for you so you can rest and watch the show. Spicy Pork was bad. There was barely any pork in it. Was mostly green/white onions, more than the meat by almost double it felt. When I did have dome of the meat, it was fine, just wasn't much of it. What a satisfying late night food spot. We walked in for a table of 4 around midnight and were immediately seated. You can choose to do k-bbq or not - we didn't cause we wanted to karaoke after and didn't want to smell like meat. Service was pretty good and I was pretty content with the prices. There's a lot to choose from, which is exciting and a little overwhelming cause deciding what to get is a little hard for an indecisive girl like me, haha. My friend and I split a bottle of yogurt soju (first time trying this flavor. I had heard it's good and IT IS. Definitely give it a try) and the dduk boki (spicy rice cakes). She said they were a little too sweet, which I could see, but I didn't mind it too much in the whole context of the meal. The sauce was REALLY good and I am a sucker for a fish cake. For my entrée, I went with the hae jang guk (spicy ox bone stew with ox blood and vegetables). God bless whoever made that broth, the umami was INSANE. Best broth I have ever had and it's not even close. I do wish the vegetables were cut a little smaller (couldn't figure out how to eat it un-messily). I also realized that I am not a big fan of the texture of ox blood. I have had blood in soups before, but it has been a while and I was sure it was a softer texture. New Wonjo deserves a solid 3.5 due to the excellent banchan but went with a 3 due to a few hiccups. For starters, I say skip making a reservation since having one does not get you seated faster. We had to wait 20min past our reservation time which makes absolutely zero sense as we saw those lined against the stairs without a reservation be seated before us. I ordered the prime galbi, kimchi fried rice w/pork, kimchi pancake and two mocktails for us to share. First came the complimentary banchan which were all delicious and fresh (seaweed, yellow radish, kimchi and salad to name a few.) The prime galbi was a pretty good cut (not chewy) and we had it prepared medium. The pancake was as expected but the kimchi fried rice with bits of pork and the fried egg was the star of our meal. However, we were sorely disappointed with the mojito mocktail as we were charged the same price as an alcoholic cocktail (which has never happened in all of my years of dining out.) So non-drinkers, beware, unless you're ok paying $17 for club soda, mint, lime, and simple syrup. I would certainly return for kbbq but next time I'll just order a Sprite. read more
