While the wait to acquire a table was longer than it should have been given that we had made a reservation, the service and food thereafter made up for it. Our booking was for the barbecue table, so we were escorted upstairs. The upstairs definitely looked a lot more enticing than the dining room on the ground floor. Once seated, we ordered: Kimchi Jeon (Pancake) (5/5) The "large" serving was generous and plenty to share amongst the three of us. The jeon itself was well filled, well flavored and the dipping sauces with it were fabulous. Barbecue item - Je Yook (Spicy Pork) (5/5) This came with a side of rice, lettuce wraps, rice cake sheets. The barbecued pork itself had great taste, char, and considerate preparation by our server. Repeat worthy dish! Korean Fried Chicken (3/5) Not crispy as I typically like KFC to be, but the flavors on it were classic. It was on the sweet, sticky, sauce-y side. Vegetarian Japchae (5/5) Nothing to fault. Was well prepared and a generous serving size even though we opted for the "small" serving. At the start of our meal, we received multiple banchan - fish cake, cabbage kimchi, scallion kimchi, pickled radish, seasoned sprouts, seasoned onions, and I'm sure a few others. I've been meaning to try this spot for some time and I enjoyed it although it didn't quite blow my socks off. We made reservations and were seated fairly quickly. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating, and brought out our orders fairly quickly. We opted for individual entrees as opposed to BBQ so I'll speak to the individual entrees, not BBQ. The prices were fair and the portion sizes were decent for the city. Our party ordered a Jeyuk Bibimbap and a Bulgoki Bibimbap for entrees, and a sweet and spicy Korean fried chicken and large ddukboki for apps. The apps were really delicious - the Korean fried chicken was really well made and the ddukboki was flavorful. I enjoyed the Jeyuk Bibimbap although it's definitely not the best I've ever had. It was moderately spicy and had good flavor but I wish it was a bit spicier and that the pork was more flavorful. On the other hand, the Bulgogi Bibimbap was bland and our group didn't enjoy it. The dish had minimal taste and the beef just wasn't spicy or flavored well. Overall, New Wonjo is a decent spot in the heart of K-Town. It's fairly busy and lively and offers a robust menu. I do plan to visit this spot again whenever I'm in K-Town to give the BBQ a try! read more

We came here on a rainy cold evening and window-shopped the Korean restaurants and decided to give New Wonjo a shot. This restaurant excels in its side dishes namely the pumpkin, fish cake, and cauliflower. They also give bok choy, kimchi, and pickled radish but the two latter ones were quite sour (I usually like sour kimchi but this was too sour!). I got the beef soondubu and compared to some of my favourite restaurants in Toronto, I felt it was quite bland and not flavourful. My brother liked the bibimbap and my sister got the bibimnaengmyeon which was quite a small portion. For the price, I would not return. While my friends and I were waiting, a guy hustled down the stairs only to vomit all over the floor which I unfortunately witnessed. Then during our meal my friend got offered shots by a famous tiktoker's friend but she rejected him and another guy at their table asked if any of us were single but it quickly became awkward because the first guy kept looking at my friend while we were eating. We went into New Wonjo accidentally as we were looking to visit another restaurant (which had closed their kitchen upon arrival). Walking down the road we wandered into New Wonjo and we were greeted by the bartender. We were immediately seated upstairs and given menus. The menu itself is traditional Korean BBQ and has a lot of selections for everyone. Our waitress Jesusa was very friendly and provided some of the best waiting service I've ever had. Very friendly, and always available when we needed her. She had other tables to attend to as well, so that's a huge plus. The other staff were also very accommodating and friendly while being extremely quick to help us with anything. For drinks we had the Pomegranate and Lychee Soju. Both were refreshing and delicious. We also got the small Dukbokki which was DELICIOUS and wonderfully spicy. Sometimes restaurants can make it a bit too sweet but this was absolutely perfect. They also included a small appetizer platter with sauteed spinach, kimchi, fried pork skins, cauliflower, and some sort of vegetable similar to a potato. It was delicious. I personally loved the fried pork skin which is usually something I'm not a fan of, but it was very savory and flavorful. For entrees we got the Daegu Mae Wun Tang and the Doenjang Jjigae. I can't remember which was which, but one was a seafood soup and the other was a bean soup with brisket in it. Both were super flavorful and fresh. The seafood in the soup wasn't overcooked at all (which tends to happen with seafood soups). They were also served with rice which went perfectly with both of them. The decor and ambiance in the restaurant was lovely. They have photos on the walls from Korean culture, and while I'm unfamiliar, it was a brilliant touch. The side we sat on had a bunch of portraits which were all very interesting to look at as we awaited our dinner. It was slightly busy in the restaurant, yet very calm and relaxing to say the least. Overall this place was incredible. We were confused because we were stuffed and yet our bill was just short of $100. So if you combine the absolutely quality customer service, amazing food, lovely decor and atmosphere, and competitive prices, it's literally 5 stars well deserved. Definitely check this place out. Haven't been to New Wonjo in YEARS, but decided to drop by yesterday for a quick solo lunch. This seems to be a popular solo dining spot - there's quite a few others as well! There's a lunch special that runs from M-F from 11-3pm, that includes a wide variety of stews and combos. I ordered the LA galbi + naengmyun combo ($26.95) which was a bit pricey, but probably the better deal given that the regular naengmyun itself was already $20. For the lunch combo, the galbi portions are quite decent - there were a good number of pieces in there. Naengmyun portion was a bit small, but just right when eaten in combination. Broth for the cold noodles was yummy and made even better by the vinegar and mustard addition. 5 banchan dishes were provided - these were decent, but I've had better. Service is quick, attentive, but not overbearing. Honestly for it's price, I'm not rushing to come back anytime soon. Definitely a good spot to maybe satisfy cravings every once in a while, but not the most affordable. read more

Located in Koreatown, Wonjo is the oldest Korean BBQ restaurant in New York City (first time eating korean BBQ at the oldest korean bbq in NY?? I think it was meant to be). I had the best time watching them cook the food in front of me over the charcoal grill. It is such a fun process to get to see and smell the food. The food are all based on secret family recipes, I practically begged them to tell me what some of these sauces were. For our entree we ordered the meat sampler for 2. It came with short rib, prime rib and chicken. The short rib was so good . We got both steamed and fried dumplings (the sauce for these insane). Finally we got a Bulgoki Bibim Bop and a Chicken Teriyaki Bibim Bop. These were so good and the stone they were served kept it hot for so long. It was so cool. read more

+.5 for service I haven't had KBBQ in forever, and in my recent trip to NYC I went to try this place with a few of my friends. Given the price and quality comparison and reading reviews, this place seemed like the best bang for our bucks. I reserved beforehand, which ended up being a great idea as they weren't taking walk-ins for KBBQ. The table BBQs are on the second floor. We were a party of 5, so there was slight difficulty in what to order, as a lot of the BBQ combos were either for 2 or 4. We ended up ordering for 4, as we decided if we weren't fully enough, we can order a separate meat later (we didn't end up needing to). We went with the meat mania combo, which included short rib, sliced prime rib eye, spicy sliced pork, and marinated boneless chicken. My entire table was very satisfied with the meal! The appetizers before the meats were enough to satisfy us given that we ordered for one person less. Their soontofu was good (not great), and their steamed egg in the middle of the meal helped in minimizing that greaseness. The best part about this restaurant was that there's a pipe on each table that clears out the smoke from the BBQ, so all of us didn't end up smelling like BBQ when we left. I wish more restaurants had that! Service was excellent here, especially when the manager came and described what some of the appetizers were, as a couple people were having KBBQ for the first time. Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 big kids) ate here recently and had a good meal. The wait for a walk-in K-BBQ table at 5:45 on a Sunday was less than 10 mins. We opted for the Premium Beef Combo, which at first I didn't think would be enough protein for our fam, but since it came with tofu-seafood soup + steamed egg (and optional bowls of rice) as well as the ban chaan (they will refill if you ask), it was a filling meal. For the price, however, the amount of meat was smaller than expected. Additionally, we noticed that (although advertised as such) most of the beef was not marinated, but it was also not seasoned either. Not even salt or pepper. The cut of meat was OK, but for almost $200, you'd hope the meat had flavor or was tenderized. I almost never have to add sauce or salt when I go K-BBQ, but I found all the meat except one flavorless. ( The one that had flavor was the only marinated one.) I wanted to try the Sam Gye Tang 삼계탕 (Whole Young Chicken Soup Stuffed with Ginseng & Rice). It was smaller than I'd expected for $25, but I was craving a traditional soup. The chicken was not over cooked-- super tender, with hearty chunks of ginger/ginseng/garlic-- hit the spot on a cold winter evening. I guess the price is on par for the area. Service was good... not great, but good. They offered to cook the meat for us, portioned it it all out, and took used plates --all of which was fine. The ONLY criticism I had was that I felt rushed the entire meal. Our server took my son's (full) bowl of soup away because it was on the table, and he had started eating the cooked meat. While she was frequently asking us if we wanted things removed from the table (pointing at dishes that still had food), we had to keep saying "we're still working on this", and we felt urged to frequently consolidate food on our plates. As soon as they scanned our card for the bill (we didn't even get the card back yet) , staff started bussing our table. We hadn't even finished eating the fruit they brought us, and 2 of our party were in the bathroom. Our meal time was about 35 mins total, the shortest amount of time I've ever spent at any K-BBQ. The wait was kind of long for an early dinner on a Saturday. Very efficient though! They took our order right before we got seated. All the side dishes came out immediately. Then all the wonjo combo foods started to come out. We order a seafood pancake in addition to the combo. The pancake was pretty good with a good amount of seafood. It's not as crispy as i would like. The staff cooks the food for you and plates them all for you. The meats were fairly good quality. We got makeolli thinking it was house made but they literally took a bottled one and poured into a jar for us to scoop it into small bowls to drink out of. The combo was very filling. OF COURSE I should have ventured to the wonderful "Korea-Town" section of NYC ages ago, but luck/fate had me wait until my most recent trip HOME to partake in my new(ish) obsession in this mecca to all things STEAMY, EXOTIC, and DEEEELICIOUS (no, not "old school, pre-Disney Times Square!!). This was one of MANY choices for my friend and I to explore, and we made a great choice. Cold, wintery day meant the hot, steamy deliciousness of the seafood stew I ordered, along with the wonderful ban chan and scallion pancake app were MUCH appreciated. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it's worth it. Go. You walk in - there's probably a line of people waiting. The first floor is regular Korean fare. They've got a pretty wide selection of dishes. Mostly here it'll be actual Koreans coming to eat. The staff seems to all be Korean. Also here you'll find a small bar where you can have a drink while you wait. They've got a nice selection of asian inspired cocktails. Upstairs is where the kbbq magic happens. Here you'll find a more varied clientele. It's $100 for a 2 person combo. Minimum. Honestly with the prices of meat skyrocketing this isn't all that bad. The really amazing thing here is that the side dishes are all made to perfection. I mean each and every single one - fresh ingredients, amazing flavoring. A lot of authenticity in the preparation style as well. Of course the meat is also great quality - and bonus, they cook it for you. They change the grill out regularly as well. Vents that work great so you're not drowning in smoke from your meat cooking.
