I'm a bagel purist and judge bagels without the cream cheese or sandwich fillings. I mean, otherwise, they would be considered sandwiches, right? I am more familiar with the New York Bagel in Ferndale and used to frequent that location several times a week while I worked in the neighborhood. I was surprised by the smaller footprint here. While it seems the same variety of bagels is carried at both locations, I'm not certain if the bagels are made here, as they were at the Ferndale location. Did I miss it because I was busy checking out the various cream cheeses? Or too busy trying to get out of other people's way? As I mentioned, it is a much smaller shop. I had the sesame bagel, which was a bit more dense than I remember. This could be because it was later in the day, and bagels have a short shelf life. Service was fine. read more

My son just moved to the area and I was looking for a better bagel option then the regular "chains" and was so happy to find New York Bagel! This place is just about the bagel, no sit down or fancy coffee, the bagels are the star of the show! when I arrived, the line was to the door, but things moved rather quickly. I ordered a half a dozen bagels, which were still warm and a container of cream cheese. Staff were friendly and very efficient. Tucked away in a little strip mall on orchard lake near northwestern. It's THE authentic New York bagel. Not a lenders but a true handmade, top shelf baked dough with a hole. It's possible I'm a Schleprock for this place. I walk in and the lights go out, the computer crashes or the alarm sounds. We walked in today and the cash register fell off its mount. Came here for a midmorning breakfast/lunch with my bf while in town and this was exactly what I needed. Cute little store front, tucked away in a strip mall with plenty of parking. The guy taking our order was very kind, and answered all our questions about the menu. I needed a sec to read everything they had and he was very patient with me lol. I ended up getting an egg bagel with chive cream cheese, lox, red onion, cucumber, and capers. It's been many years since I have bought Bagels from this business. Nice to see that they still make the excellent bagels that I remember where they have great taste, a crunchy crust with a nice chewy texture to them. Just the way I like it! Aside from the bagels, this business also make a large variety of fresh made cream cheeses, Bagel sandwiches, and they also sell lunchmeat, cheese and smoked fish. Relative to facility, the business has a relatively small footprint and is takeout only so keep this in mind if you are looking for a place to sit down and eat. Staff was very business like and prompt with taking care of customers as they walked into the store. Overall if you are a fan of well made bagels than this is a spot you should definately check out. When they are on, they are on! My wife always has one request when people are visiting from this area and coming out to Southern California, and that is for "Michigan" Salt bagels from here. We have always had the debate of her Michigan Bagels versus my New Jersey/New York bagels, and I can say my heart still sides with NJNY, but I sure do have to lean the salt bagel in Michigan's favor, the addition of poppy seeds is brilliant. Recently we were out visiting and were able to come in and experience the shop directly. When we arrived, we already had some bagels and salt sticks waiting and they were delicious! We were heading up to Niagara falls for a few day road trip and I ran out and got some Salt sticks for the road, my wife asked if I went to the wrong place as they didn't taste great. When we returned, we stopped by again, this time she was with me, to prove it was indeed the correct spot, again the salt sticks were not great. The staff here is not overly friendly, well actually not friendly at all to be truthful. I am still giving it 4 stars as when they are good, they are great. read more

A morning go to. I pop in here in the mornings on my way to work for a bagel and cream cheese. They have a variety of bagels, usually the same one daily. I enjoy the honey wheat one and pumpernickel. I enjoy their strawberry cream cheese also. It's very good. But I do feel it's pricy if you get it on the side because they weight it. So I thought I was a super fan of these bagels, specifically the salt bagels and sticks, and request them every time my family comes out to CA where I live, but they didn't live up to my expectations from past experiences. My Aunt had a few waiting for us when we arrived and they were actually pretty good, but then when my husband went back and picked up a few more salt sticks they seemed over cooked and definitely not as delicious. I didn't give up hope and tried them 2 more times. They were just okay the 2nd to last time and luckily the last ones we took back to CA lived up to my memories of how good they could be. The staff was not very friendly even when they were not busy and the inconsistencies of bagels were disappointing. If I lived closer I may try them again and/or find out if they have different bakers at different times to see if that is why they were so inconsistently good and bad. read more

New York West Bloomfield knows how to make a bagel! Recently got an order of half a dozen bagels and 1/2 a pound of vegetable cream cheese. The bagels were $7 and the cream cheese was $6. Bagel Flavours were everything, garlic, jalapeño, rosemary, sesame and onion. Bagels were perfectly sized, not too small and not too big. Cooked to chewy perfection with a crispy crust and warm to the touch. If you like bagels you'll die for these. Approximately 20 Flavours of cream cheese to choose from. One of the things that the Midwest has over where I'm living is that you can get Rye Bagels there and not here. I asked someone who owned a bagel bakery why these wonderful things were so scarce. I was able to order and pay for my dozen Rye Bagles (you get 13) online. Then, I walked into their shop and grabbed my order without waiting in line. Very easy to pre-order for pick up via Toast/their website. Make sure you're picking the right location! The egg bagel did have poppyseed on it, but no matter - it's an egg bagel under all that! They also offer salt bagels, which is not as common either I was thrilled with the chive cream cheese. Great texture and flavor - added just the right amount of salt. My family was in the mood for some old school bagels. More recently we have been getting bagel packs from Panera for our annual Thanksgiving morning brunch. This year for the Christmas morning brunch I got a request to get some bagels. Since I got a dozen we started eating them on Christmas eve morning. There are some very good aspects of these bagels. They have the traditional harder boiled outside and chewy inside from my childhood. The kids are used to a softer texture, so that threw them off a little, but my husband and I appreciate the nostalgic flavor and texture. The egg bagel, onion, and raisin are perfect. They went well with the butter, cream cheese, and lox toppings I had in the house. They tasted good fresh and also toasted. But I am also confused by a couple of things. They do still have a cheese bagel, but it is parmesan not the old school orange colored ones from the childhood. The bagels were also very small, much smaller than in the past. They definitely shrunk to smaller than my fist. They still had a good flavor, but tiny. That is fine, but here is what I was really unsure of. The sign said that they offered a half dozen or a baker's dozen which is 13 bagels. I wanted to get the dozen that consisted of 13 bagels. When I reached the front on the line I was very rushed by the individual bagging the bagels. I did not know to count them as the bagels were being placed in the bag. I was charged slightly less than the price on the board but I did not think anything about it until I got home and found 12 not 13 bagels. It is not the cost factor, I was not charged for the baker's dozen price, but I did not know I had to specify what was listed on their board. I also did not know why the individual assisting me did not ask if I wanted to baker's dozen if there was a difference. I have never had to specify at any other place that offers a baker's dozen bagels or donuts. I did not want to call or try to drive back all that way for one dozen but it seems like I could have experienced slightly better customer service. All in all we enjoyed the bagels so I am sure we will return regardless. read more

OK, so this is a hard review to give three stars. I must say that I had a lock's bagel with cream cheese. The bagel type was wheat. I must say that the actual lox bagel was a five out of five, it was a customer service this morning 4.29.2022 ( I think the lady was African or Jamaican). The experience was very unpleasant while ordering. A nice greeting definitely goes along way in the morning when you're getting your coffee and getting some breakfast in your system for the first time. Seems as if the person taking the order had missed their breakfast and needed a cup of coffee. But to offset that there was a great gentleman elderly that I talk to you about growing up in the area! Oh yeah but that's why it's good. Finger licking delicious. With covid, there is a five person limit inside the store at all times. The service is fast so please be patient! It's worth the wait. For 1/2 dozen bagels ($5.99), three sandwiches with spread and one with a tomato, san pellegrino and la croix the total was all under $23. Don't forget to tip well. Times are tough for everyone! A better bagel shop than most in the area, but that certainly is not saying much, and these are one heck of a far cry from New York bagels. I'd recommend a field trip. These bagels are too dense, and too small, the flavoring on Everything bagels is off, specifically compared to the bagels you can expect in New York (and I'm not just talking about the water). I think the best bagel in the area are still found at Barry Bagels, but they're a bit far out compared to this spot. If you're in a pinch, they're better than Einstein, but just barely. I want to be clear-- I'm not a bagel shop connoisseur by any means. I used to frequent Einstein bagel bros when I lived conveniently next to one, so maybe it's common knowledge that bagels at these types of specialty stores are smaller.. I don't know! But the bagels here are like considerably smaller than what I was expecting (it's like the size of my palm, see photo for reference) so I wasn't really full after my lox sandwich. And bagels, in my personal experience, are meant to be filling, haha. I ordered the lox bagel with chive cream cheese on an everything bagel. I added tomato and red onion, which I didn't know they charge per added topping (50 cents each) until I was checking out, so just FYI. As a reviewer mentioned, it is salted, but I didn't find it overly salted (I like flavor?) but just something to be aware of. Aesthetically and taste-wise, it was a beautiful and yummy lox sandwich. Messy though, so I'd recommend keeping on the wrapping if possible. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but the JOURNEY (aka service) was mighty slow. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt that they were new employees, so a natural learning curve is expected. But the poor guy behind me had to repeat his order 10 times.. no joke. (At that point why not just write down the order instead of trying to memorize multiple bagel orders) To further my point, when I was ordering there was only one guy ahead of me, but by the time I left with my single bagel sandwich and $5(!!?) tiny vile of OJ, the line was out the door with ten people waiting. Maybe they're really leaning into the New York bagel experience by offering them at New York prices and lower level of service LOL (no shade.. heh okay maybe just a little). So I stopped at the New York bagel today having been in the area for Dr visit. Headed to another Dr appointment. Entered the store asked for a toasted bagel. Clerk said I can't toast it for you unless you purchase something on it. Being a diabetic and needing some thing to put in my body before my next procedure which requires anesthetic. So I asked to speak to the manager and he confirmed the fact that he would not take a simple plain bagel and toasted for me I have a problem with clerks who have an clue as to how to deal with a customer who needs a special request. Having been a restaurant owner for many many years certain customers have certain needs and if you choose to develop your business you need to make exceptions for ridiculous rules. Needless to say there is no way I will ever stop here again. All-time best bagels I've ever had. They're dense and chewy and yeasty, not the soft muffin-type bagel. They bake them fresh all day long so if you walk in at the right time, you can get them still warm. I lived out of state for a decade and every time family came I had them bring me a couple dozen salt bagels. I love to slice them and dip them in mustard. I go every week to get a baker's dozen. The staff are really quick, friendly, and polite too. This is a great business. I remember being really depressed when they briefly shut down at the start of covid. This is a pretty good place for a good bagel that has a nice crunch to the outer shell and soft center. For an everything bagel, it was well covered with its toppings. No shortage there. I added the cream cheese and lox (smoked salmon) to make it a complete sandwich. There probably could have been just a little more salmon, one or two more thin slices would have sufficed. Having the name of New York in its title, I would have loved to see more lox options like a New York bagel shop. I grew up in this area, and have eaten at New York Bagels for as long as I can remember. Its a tiny little bagel shop off Orchard Lake Road just on the other side of 15 mile. I flew into Detroit this morning at 7AM, got my rental car, and this was the first stop that I made before going to my moms house. I wanted to surprise her with bagels and lox, since its her favorite item from this place. She was over the moon happy! Its a little walk in bagel shop, with bagels made fresh daily. They make their own cream cheese, with a variety of different flavors, along with bagels, locks, whitefish, and a bunch of other delicious food that you order from the counter. Despite the fact that its small, its full of local flavor. In a day and age of chain bagel shops, and family businesses going under, I'm glad to see that this place has thrived. I picked up an order of lox, a garlic bagel for me, and an egg bagel for my mom. I showed up, food in hand at 8:30 this morning at my moms house, and she was thrilled! As long as I'm in Michigan, weather its as a visitor or a full time resident, I will continue to be a regular customer of this place. Best bagels in town! read more

I just finished my day-old Everything bagel with Lox and Chives cream cheese, and I'm PISSED! Why did I only buy two bagels? Why don't I have a dozen more and a vat of that amazing, mind-blowing cream cheese? Then I could send Ken on a very important errand so I could eat all of it?! Damn it! I'm Monday morning quarterbacking these bagels! Bagel consistency is different from anything I've had in Michigan. Hard outside, firm, chewy inside. One bagel really will fill your belly. A lot of savory choices for me, but only blueberry and cinnamon swirl for Ken. At least 10 cream cheese flavors, hand scooped for you and sold by the half pound. My current (and forever) love, lox and chives, was $3.50 for a half-filled 8oz plastic deli tub. I licked the empty tub this morning, not gonna lie. Small place. Most times, they're packed. I've never seen an empty metal bin of bagels, so they keep up with the hungry masses. Love the folks behind the counter - they're rushed, but friendly. I'm not that big a morning bagel person but I came across this place many times. Whether eating at Stage Deli a few doors down or studying at Barnes and Nobles across the street. But I have come to appreciate the bagels from this establishment. They're fresh and well-stocked throughout the day. Crisp exterior, chewy interior. BAD HANDWASHING!! While I waited for my bagel I watched 5 of the employees go from touching money at the register to then changing gloves without washing their hands or not changing gloves at all. There was also a manager/owner guy who came from the back and put on gloves without washing his hands and then grabbed people's bagels. These are health code violations and they're contaminating all the foods they touch. They have a hand sink right in the front area and no one used it even once while I was standing there. Came back a second time because I had been craving it after it was so good the first time. Sadly this time the bagel I got was very hard. I got the everything bagel which was a bit too salty for me. I did an online order and I selected sandwich lox because it didn't cost extra for that type, and it was the same price as when I first tried the lox here, so I assumed that was the right kind to get. For some reason though the lox today was very stringy, not tender at all, and cut a bit too thick for my liking.
