Decided to come here for brunch since it was conveniently located close to campus and right by the Strathcona's farmers market. Walking in, we were seated in the patio area where we were surrounded by cute flowers. I really liked the atmosphere. However, the prices did not match the environment at all. A bagel platter will run you about $20 while Eggs Benedict came close to $30 per plate! I was shocked at the amount of "ordering rules" on the menu and they will charge you an extra $2 for a sharing plate if you decide to split an entree with your friend since they have to bring out an extra plate for you. They also charge extra for ice. Absolutely ridiculous. I don't think a business should nickel and dime their customers. I got the Lox eggs benny as my entree. It was actually pretty good, the hollandaise was creamy and the eggs were cooked well. However, it was nothing phenomenal. The hash browns were a bit burnt. I wouldn't say it was worth the $26. The cinnamon bun was absolutely a disgrace to cinnamon buns all over the world. Because it was sitting in a pool of melted unsalted butter, the bun was soggy. It was also drizzled with simple syrup which definitely didn't help with the sogginess. I could barely taste the cinnamon sugar in it and ended up just not finishing it after one bite. All in all, I wouldn't recommend The New York Bagel Cafe. There are much better brunch places around the city without ridiculous rules. read more

After going to the farmers market, our family friends and I decided to grab some brunch. We walked a block from the farmers market to the New York Bible Café and were able to get seated for our large party of nine. When we sat down our tables were quite squished so there wasn't a whole lot of space for us to be seated at a large party and we're kind of put the corner a little bit. When we were seated the server came by and took her orders. We all ordered our own bagels and breakfast sets as well as water drinks. One thing to know in Canada is that they don't really use ice because it's generally cold, so the ice water did not actually have ice. Additionally it was quite hot and stuffy inside as I don't think there was air-conditioning as well. Just something to keep in mind as we did come in the summer time. When the food finally arrived it looked very pretty, and tasted just as good. We ordered an assortment of bagels, and eggs Benedict. Overall was a filling and tasty meal. read more

I'm a HUGE fan of breakfast food, especially Eggs Benedict. I have never in my life seen a menu that is pretty much dedicated to eggs Benny like the one at NYBC. I love how they prepare it on a bagel instead of an English muffin (it makes for a bigger portion, but it tastes amazing!). You can also order different kinds of coffee, tea, and alcoholic drinks as well. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful and has a very European feel, and the outdoor patio is a little more private but is also decorated beautifully. Just a warning, the portions are GIANT! So I hope you're hungry, prepared to share with a friend, or take some home. Either way you won't be disappointed with your breakfast or brunch here. read more

Went here for breakfast as a recommendation from a coworker and was severely disappointed. Very little seating and extremely cramped dining area making it difficult to get to your seat. We each ordered breakfast and my wife ordered an iced coffee, I received my drink after a few minutes of waiting and we were told that the iced coffee would be coming shortly. That was the last we seen of our server until our food came out quite some time later with no iced coffee still, when we asked our server she told us that it was made and she had forgot to bring it out so they would make her a new one. Another 5 or so minutes later when our meals were mostly finished due to the small serving size my wife finally got her iced coffee (There was one other group in the restaurant at the time). The food wasn't overly good for the price as it was a pretty pricy meal and the rest of the experience left a lot to be desired so I couldn't recommend them personally. read more

I came here for the first time the other day for supper, not breakfast or brunch like I'm sure most people would do for the New York Bagel Cafe. I was Fringing and with limited time in between shows this place was right next to the venue for my next show, so it seemed like a good place to go. I didn't realize New York Bagel Cafe was open for supper. Their menu is more breakfast/brunch/lunch focused, with bagel platters, but there was a Montreal smoked meat sanwich on rye bread on the menu. Most of the bagels (and this sandwich option) are platter items, so you get said bagel/sandwich with a couple of sides. They only serve their hashbrowns for breakfast so I could choose between potato salad and a fruit cup. I'm not sure if the potato salad is cream-based, but being lactose intolerant I thought I'd go with the safe bet and get a fruit salad. There was pineapple, honey dew, and watermelon in the fruit salad. It was alright. The sandwich also came with some "veggies" on the side - a tomato slice (odd, but okay), slices of red onion, a slice of cucmumber, and two pickles. The pickles seemed homemade, very tart but good good. The sandwich itself was pretty good. The smoked meat was delicious, not melt in your mouth like the smoked meat Sandwiches I've had in Montreal, but still good. The mean had a nice flavor to it and the mustard was good. The bread however was a bit too dry. I know Rye bread is a drier bread, but it was a bit too dry and crusty in some spots. Probably the coolest thing about this place was the patio. Being that this restaurant is on Gateway they've divided the patio from the outside with a wooden slat wall. It's nice because it blocks some (definitely not all) of the noise from the outside, but it still lets some outside light in. There are vines, and plants (along the window sill) in this patio. Sit facing away from the road and it's actually a really nice patio. Aside from that the sandwich and platter was really good. There's a sign inside the restaurant saying good food take time, but going at dinner (6pm) I had my food within about 10 minutes (there was also only 1 other table which helps). I'd be interested to try the New York Bagel Cafe for breakfast and give one of their bagel platters a try. read more

Gorgeous food presentation and a collection of mismatched china has a soft spot in my heart, but the quality of the food itself is nothing to complain about. The menu includes few items, with huge variety. The bagel platters and eggs benedict of course steal the show. The platters include your choice of bagel, and cream cheese (my two favourites being honey, almond, and raisin, and artichoke and feta), served with potato salad, a slice of dill pickle, and organic vegetables. The eggs benedict is also served on your choice of bagel, with your choice of topping, ranging from plain bacon to prosciutto and grilled apple, served with potatoes, and fresh fruit. Pair your meal with a house espresso or try a special coffee creation, the bagel cafe offers a sweet retreat for breakfast or lunch. I will continue coming back for the enjoyment of my experience here, however the prices are high for bagels and breakfast food, and it can be a challenge to get a table during busy hours. This little bistro has been a regular haunt of mine over the years. As the name of the restaurant says, this place mainly serves eggs benedict over bagels. Pro tip: this is a European style bistro, so your food isn't going to come out in 5 minutes...Expect to wait a little while for a quality meal. This Sunday I wanted to try something new for brunch, I found this place and decided that it looked pretty good from the online menu that I found. I was a little off put when the prices on the online menu did not match the menus in the actual restaurant, so I think that should be properly updated so people aren't expecting those prices upon showing up. I went with my boyfriend, I got the chorizo eggs Bennie and he got the smoked turkey eggs Bennie. Honestly the best eggs Bennie we have both tried. But I have to say the coffee was my favourite, I got the Hawaiian coffee which has homemade coconut whipped topping and it is so delicious I highly recommend, all their coffee is espresso based and I love espresso, also some of the best coffee I've had. Their house coffee comes with steamed milk on the side, if that's not what you want I would Rec come to requesting it differently. After an experience at this location, I was not impressed. First all, charging for water, hot water with a lemon slice was ridiculous. Secondly, the menu was as appetizing as one would expect for the prices posted. We ordered the smoked tuna with cream cheese, and well I've had better for cheaper. Although the plate presentation was adequate, it wasn't what it was cracked up to be. My friend ordered a bagel with plain cream cheese. Her remark was not that great and well Tim Hortons has better bagels and donuts. The tea wasn't bad but the coffee tasted stale. Ended up ordering a hot water with lemon (which we got charged for), So, we highly do not recommend this place until they get their act together. Although I have bad points I will note this, at least the place was clean and the ambient music was subtle and not overpowering. But I won't be going back to this location. I came upon an unexpected surprise breakfast date at New York Bagel Cafe. I met a new friend, Mr. Ele, and we just finished an intense work out at the gym. It was mid-morning and we decided to have a hearty breakfast somewhere close to Whyte Ave. We were greeted by a lady that I believe runs the New York Bagel Cafe. She knew exactly where we would be sitting. She put us in the cozy back corner of the restaurant where we were surrounded by walls of bookshelves and interesting artsy and mismatched gadgets. I have forgotten how unique the antique decor of this restaurant was. I was reminded of a time when I spent most of my youth reading books that took place in a rustic times. In the middle of our table were a variety of spreads, jams and sauces. The most I've ever seen at any table. We started off with a fancy European iced coffee ($7) With the extensive benedict menu selection, it made it hard for me to pick the one best choice. THEY all sounded delicious. Not to mention they make there own bagels and use local eggs here. I love supporting locals! I finally decided on the spicy sausage benedict ($22) Mr. Ele was feeling adventerous and created his own omlette with all the meat items in the selection. ($35) That was oddly different as the waitress wrote down his order. It does take time for them to prepare good quality food for there customers. I know they really put the extra effort into making it look photo delightful for people like me. =) We weren't in a hurry to go anywhere as I knew we were interested in getting to know each other. It was definitely worth the wait once you see the beautiful presentation and the assortment of fresh fruits. When Mr. Ele got his ginormous omlette, he had the biggest big kid smile on his face. Having no idea how hungry Mr. Ele was...he ate up all his omelette and described it as the best omlette he's ever had. LOL I on the other hand forgot how good my food tasted like, because I got lost in his pecs. Went for my first time this weekend. Love the atmosphere and the decor. It's very small and cozy - feels like a mountain village coffee house. We ordered french toast, fritatta and a delicious homemade bread with almonds and dried fruit with a sweet spread and fruit dish. All very delicious! The french toast and bread dish were a bit too sweet for my taste but perhaps that's because of how big the plates are. I feel the need to update my previous review, as CLEARLY NYBC has many people leaving negative reviews (even if they have never been there) because of some crazy lady complaining to the news about the cost of lemon water (what kind of news outlet publishes an article about some princess whining about a $3.50 glass of lemon water?). So here we are, I am not sure what my rating was before, either 4 or 5 stars of course - and well deserved. My husband and I don't have a tonne of money, but we make a trip here at least once a month. It has never let us down, though you should know going into this cute little cafe/restaurant that it is going to be more expensive than Denny's or iHop. The quality AND atmosphere far surpass other breakfast places. Keep in mind, though this place is a little on the expensive side (especially for breakfast food), it is worth every penny. I have had breakfast in all sorts of different places through the US and Canada, and this is hands down, the best. There is a TONNE of flavour in every dish I have ever had here, and they serve it with fun exotic fruits, and deliciously seasoned potatoes. I often add sliced tomato to my benedict, and they notify me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME about the $8.00 upcharge (I know crazy), prior to putting the order through. I HIGHLY doubt they would ring something in without notifying ANYONE of the cost. The employees know this place is expensive, and their intentions are not to trick people into spending $3.50 more than they expected. That wastes everyone's time when the bill comes, and I assure you the servers don't want to deal with you, as much as you don't want to deal with them. Be nice, and people will be nice to you. If you can't afford it, and didn't expect it to be so expensive, just leave before you order. Side note: If you enjoy delicious coffee drinks, get a Micaro with your meal. Nowhere beats their selection of eggs benedict dishes, nor does anybody have the affinity to pair their eggs benedict with the likes of prosciutto and asparagus, smoked goose and apple, foie gras and truffles, and other decadent combinations. Although most of the time I'm in the mood for a simple breakfast, there are times when I crave the complexity of New York Bagel Cafe's menu and have the time to wait for a table. This was my 4th visit to the quaint place on Gateway Boulevard. Joe and I came as breakfast and brunch go-ers were leaving, arriving at around 1pm. What I love about this is place is how cozy it feels inside. Little knickknacks here and there, unique artwork around the walls. Even the condiments are nifty, placed in the center of each table: white chocolate spreads, fig jam, different varieties of mustards, even a wasabi paste (?!) to accompany your meal. Their house coffee is serve as a strong European brewed blend, served in a tall beer stein with a cute steamer of milk on the side. My go-to order is always the prosciutto and grilled apple but this time around, I decided to jump ship and try the smoked goose. Just as delicious! You can choose your bagel type. I'd recommend the cheese bagel for those who are not scared of a saltier meal, but otherwise stick to the white or whole grain to tone down the sodium. The potatoes are nice and crispy on the outside, well seasoned, and makes the dish a hearty meal (or two for me!). As a side, they always give you a variety of fruits, including exotic fares you wouldn't normally see at your average brunch. Yummy! Joe ordered a special for the weekend, something I completely missed. He finished his entire dish though, so I take it he was happy with his choice. With a bill of $40+ (for brunch people!), it can get pretty pricey. If you dare, you can try their $95 eggs benedict, complete with James Bond's favorite: Malosol Beluga caviar. Like I said, definitely a once in a while treat. Finally got to try this place for brunch with friends but was not overly impressed. I had the classic breakfast with bagel, fruit, bacon and hash. Was surprised to see the average item here was around $20, a bit much for brunch, but they give you a heaping plate of food. My fruit was fresh, bacon cooked perfectly, but the potatoes were burnt. I noticed my friend didn't eat much of his french toast; he said it was too sweet. My other friend had the cinnamon bun, which was served with a huge scoop of cream cheese icing on the side, that looked like a giant scoop of ice cream. It looked delicious, but I don't know who could eat that much icing! Overall I think most of our group was generally happy with our orders. What got us all though was being charged for ice, which I have never seen before anywhere. This was during the major heat wave this summer, and for some reason they don't have any fans here. It was a hot 30+ and humid day, and the restaurant was packed, making it even warmer inside. They opened the doors out to the patio, but with no breeze it didn't make a difference. My friend grabbed a random book from their display bookshelf to fan herself and her toddler with, because it was so hot. When we asked for the ice, our server literally said, "Just so you guys know, it's $1 for ice. I know it's weird, but ..." Just so you know, there wasn't an end to that sentence. He really just left it at that, which was kind of funny. It was so stifling hot we didn't care and paid for the ice. Service is generally alright, we didn't have much interaction with our server since they seemed really busy at the time. But we didn't wait too long for the food and I think he checked on us once to see if we were ok. The selection of bagels (both the kinds of bagels and the toppings) rivals any fast-food bagel shop with the choices. All bagels come with a side of potato salad which I did not have a chance to try, but I have heard is fabulous. There are also a few light entrees like vegetarian chili and veggie burgers. I opted for one of the breakfast items which was two eggs, home fries, a toasted bagel, and a choice of turkey, bacon, or ham. My scrambled eggs were extremely fluffy without being under-done. Turkey was a unique meat option, the the thinly-sliced smoked turkey breast went well with the eggs. As for the home fries? Wow - crispy and delicious. A side of fruit was a nice touch also. At $13 it was also a good value. Most of the items here run from $12-$16, so it is reasonable when you take into account this is an independent cafe that strives to make excellent food. Oh, I haven't talked about the coffee yet. I had a house coffee which was a bit expensive at over $3 but was strong, rich espresso with a side of steamed milk. Quaint little restaurant on Gateway just a block or two away from the Strathcona farmers' market, the New York Bagel Cafe has the perfect match of ambience and fine food. Among the various bagel-based breakfast, brunch and late lunch options, I would swear by the eggs "Bennedict" choices. I've had an omelette once and enjoyed it thoroughly. The coffee with steamed milk is an option that I see in very few cafes and though it's a little expensive for coffee ($3+), it's just terrific out here. I don't know what's there in that coffee they serve - i'm always left wanting for seconds. They also have a fine collection of teas and espresso based coffee drinks. The ambience is very relaxing. Soft, slow music playing in the background; antique musical instruments, clocks, telephones, books etc. along the perimeter of the room. You can easily spend two hours at this place (provided it's not too crowded!). The tables and chairs are simple; an elegant dark wood with a very relaxing feel. Just a comment on the bagel platters. I wasn't particularly enamored by it. It's about $15 a platter and even though it fills you up - thanks to the potato salad, it sure feels like you just had a bagel, at the end of it all. I've stayed at the Omni hotel in Montreal and it was cheaper and better than this sad excuse. This is a café in the car-oriented region of Edmonton. There's nothing asthetically appealing about the place or it's location. It's not the kind of place you'd be proud to take your visiting relatives for brunch or anything..it's just a boring café And the server seemed rushed and pretentious when asked about different bagels. I would not either reccomend or visit again. read more

Freakin absolutely amazing food, spectacular. I have nothing negative to say about it the taste or service, it was crazy good. However seating is a bit of an issue because it's such a small space and the atmosphere is a little high end for me. It's also very expensive so not a place I'll be going a lot. But if I get a huge paycheck it'll definitely be the first place I go! read more

The New York Bagel Cafe is entirely understated from the outside. In fact, you can't be really prepared for the warm, cozy atmosphere that greets you, beckoning you to take off your coat and hat and stay awhile. Everything's in solid, dark wood, with soft lighting mixed with ample window illumination. The window sills are lined with antique items and a library of books, from which I picked up the odd title "Oral Sadism and the Vegetarian Personality" and had a few laughs at the ironic tongue-in-cheek psycho-babble written by shrinks about shrinking. I ordered the locks and cream cheese on a toasted poppy seed bagel. The salmon was so fresh it practically melted in my mouth. It came with the best potato salad I've ever tasted and I ordered a cafe au lait to wash it down. The menu has a wide variety of bagel toppings including James Bond's favourite with beluga cavier for $95, and eggs benny with toppings including truffles and fois gras and other eccentric delights. It's a bit pricey by very high quality. Jazz was playing and the cafe had a lazy Saturday afternoon feel which defied going back out into the cold December wind. So I stayed a while, reading and sipping coffee from a glass mug eating poppy seeds off of my empty plate, perfectly content not being in New York, but celebrating the New York spirit. read more

This a place that is by far my favourite. You definitely don't come here for good service or cheap brunch but the food. The food is fantastic and plentiful. There are a ton of people who complain about the high price but for that price you get a ton of high quality food you can't finish. Wait times are super long. They don't let people in based on who got in first. So if you come solo you will have to wait even longer making you feel unwelcome. Finally when they let you in they give you the worst seat possible although other ones are available. When asked why they say we are keeping that for four people although the table they give you also seats four people! The service is super slow and they take at least 45 minutes to get the food ready most of the time. I will try to avoid this place in future. There are better places with much better pricing. read more

New York Bagel Cafe is a quaint, well-known spot located just a few blocks off the beaten path of Whyte Ave. If your a brunch(ie) or a hipster, then you already know about this place. It's located right beside the infamous Steel Wheels Pizzeria (soju anyone?). I met up with a friend of mine for a late Sunday brunch, but it was more like lunch. I couldn't believe it - we arrived at 2:30pm and the place was packed. There was even still a line, with three groups ahead of us. So ridiculous! Just another reason to hate brunch. While we waited, I checked out NY Bagel Cafe's interior, which has quite the assortment of random decor. Eclectic pops to mind. We grabbed a menu so that we wouldn't have to waste any time deciding as we were starved. Strangely enough, I didn't spot any of their infamous eggs benedict dishes on the menu. I believe they stop serving them later on in the day so get there early if you're a bennies lover. - Cafe au lait ($4.50) - look at all that foam oozing out of that cafe au lait. I don't even drink coffee but I was even tempted to sip this baby up. Even better, my friend thoroughly enjoyed it and was debating ordering another one. - Lox and cream cheese ($20.00) - both dishes came with potato salad, sour dill pickle and different types of fruit. The lox (aka. brined salmon) was plentiful, fresh and had a nice soft, chew to it. You pick the type of bagel you want (cheddar, sesame, white and whole wheat). - Hickory-smoked turkey with cream cheese and cranberry sauce ($18.00) - I can never say no to cranberry sauce. I wasn't sure what to expect but it wasn't a Thanksgiving style cranberry sauce, it had (I believe) currants and was much less sweeter. It was definitely homemade. I didn't get any hints of hickory flavour from the turkey, but they were generous with the amount and sliced expertly. My dish also came with red onions, alfa sprouts, kiwi, tomatoes and cucumbers. So healthy! Somehow, our order got lost in between the server putting in our order and the kitchen receiving it. We ended up waiting a pretty long time before inquiring about the hold up - lucky for us, NY Bagel Cafe acknowledged their mistake and rectified the situation. They comped our meal, which was a pleasant surprise. Nice to see that they owned up to the error, don't know many places that would do that these days. I'll be back next time to try their eggs benedict but hopefully I can get lucky and miss the crowds. read more

So this place is one that I had heard many folks speak about over the years. And well, that's for darn good reason! I've never been to a restaurant that had as extensive of an eggs Benedict menu as this one before now! I really enjoyed my bagel eggs Benedict (yes the eggs Benedict is made with bagels, and why would I try a dish with anything but a bagel in it for my first visit given that bagel is in the name of the restaurant??!?) -- I had the tomato bacon cheese one, and it was marvelous! So often I go to restaurants and ask for a soft poached egg only to receive it overcooked. This place did an excellent job with the food. Not only was it cooked properly but it tasted great and it was ample in quantity. I really loved the selection of fruit on my plate too -- it isn't often I get starfruit on my plate! And the breakfast potatoes were actually good enough that I ate them all! Now this restaurant is a bit old school when it comes to payment (they will NOT split the cheque if you're paying by debit or credit so plan accordingly). And there are sort of passive aggressive signs throughout the restaurant warning you of various things. And service is kind of slow (which surprised me seeing as my table was one of TWO tables in the restaurant that were in use during my visit). I mean these factors wouldn't keep me from visiting again, but I think it's noteworthy to remember that service isn't fast and to prepare for this when you do visit. This restaurant has been in existence for a VERY LONG time in Edmonton. It is easy to access via transit as it isn't far from Whyte Avenue. There is ample parking in the nearby side streets as well. During the Fringe or during the summer you can even get here via streetcar from downtown (or Oliver). This place is a great place for brunch or lunch. read more
