The New York Bagelry is one of my favorite spots in West Lawn. The food is always good, and the prices are just right. My only frustration with this location is the traffic in the parking lot. I feel ownership could do a lot to fix this. For example. Set aside some parking spots on the Exit side so you can direct drive through traffic after paying. This would greatly reduce the backup of cars. Additionally, I've seen them send employees out to take orders of cars in line. This is excellent. But they don't seem to do this often enough. The number of times I've driven by instead of stopping because I can't even pull into the the parking lot is too high to count. Your business is losing money! read more

Used to love this place. Don't get me wrong, their bagel sandwiches can be delicious...when they manage to get your order correct. The last 4-5 times in a row that we've gone across a span of a several weeks, our order (after waiting forever in drive through) was wrong. So, this is a regular spot for me. Great bagels, good service, good coffee! But today, I decided to try their Cuban Sandwich. Now, I am a big fan of Cuban Sandwiches and have been having them since I was a young, so I was a bit apprehensive with regard to a 'bagel version' of it. I was shocked! It was delicious! Ham was thinly sliced, cheese gave a nice compliment, and the pork was seasoned just right to remind me of classic sandwiches I have had in the past. Now, I have had Cuban Sandwiches is NY, Miami, and in my old (spanish) neighborhood in Philadelphia; and this ranks right up there with them! On a bagel!!! I am still shocked. Nothing special about this place, other than it's the only real local place to grab fresh bagels. I always ask for my bagels toasted and they're usually never toasted. Today I got a chocolate chip bagel with strawberry cream cheese and the bagel was doughy in the middle. We were just in town for the weekend for a concert and wanted something fairly quick. I will start by saying that the way they cook their eggs is terrible and I ended up ripping it out. I had ordered a Taylor ham, egg and cheese sandwich on a garlic bagel. My friend I was with said the same thing about the egg. Now before anyone thinks I'm giving a bad review...I am not, once the egg was out the sandwich was great. I gave it 5 stars because those bagels are just that good. I would drive an great distance for the perfect breakfast but with NY Bagelry in the neighborhood I don't have to go far. Always jumping the huge staff still manages to provide amazing service. Your order is up fast and they'll bring it to your table. Drive thru is still an option if you have to keep moving. Sometimes it can get a little overwhelming with all the people who pile in for awesome eats, but it has never effected the quality of my experience. Second - The measure of good business is doing things well. The measure of truly exceptional businesses is handling the inevitable exception and error efficiently with the customer in mind. The other day I stopped in for a bagel and coffee. Seemed like it was taking a long time, but I was watching the news while sipping coffee... Eventually I noticed that several customers who had come in after me had gotten their orders and left. I asked about my bagel at the counter, and my server immediately realized her error, apologized several times and we both had a laugh about it. She quickly completed the order and handed me a large bag with my bagel with cream cheese plus 3 extra bagels and a cup of strawberry cream cheese while apologizing again. Totally unnecessary, but a nice gesture and surprise! I am writing so much about this experience because, even without the extra stuff, they had such a positive and helpful response to their having made a mistake. Kenhorst manager told me to go to west lawn, west lawn manager told me to run the business since I suggested closing the store then cleaning since you're making no money for an hour anyway... numerous times my sons been turned away in just a few short weeks. calls have been made but there is no positive outcome as west lawn manager told me today. no more bagelry for us. thats 50$ at least a week. guess they don't care about keeping business. read more

Oh my gosh the bagels here make my life. I must admit I might be a bit biased because I know people there. Every time I come home I head straight for the bagelry. But let me lay it out for you: The owners know how to make bagels. One is from Manhattan and the other is from Queens. They worked at a shop together in NY and decided they wanted their own place. They came down and scoured the countryside outside of Philly to find a place without bagels. And BAM. There it was, the tiny city of Reading, Pa. It wasn't saturated with bagel places and needed some help. So they took what used to be a wholesale seafood place that looked like an old ship and made it a bagel shop. I admit, before the massive refurbishment of 2008 the place looked pretty bad on the inside. But now it's great. The eating area is new and open. Everything's clean. These guys have invested a lot into their business and will do everything to make you happy. Their sandwiches, both breakfast and lunch are to die for. They use real eggs, sausage, bacon and ham. None of the fake pre-made stuff here. And the lunch sandwiches have freshly sliced meat (the owners insist on this) and fresh toppings. Everything is made from scratch here. And the bagels are SO good. They make them properly as is pointed out in the other reviews. The owners are very particular about how the bagels are made and never cut corners on ingredients. The egg, tuna and chicken salad are made from scratch by one of the owners. They're fantastic. Having been going there for three years I can tell you with confidence to come in early Saturday and Sunday so you don't have to stand in a substantial line. I can also tell you that the people are very friendly and moving as fast as they can behind the counter. Stop by and experience one of their bagels and you'll be blown away. read more

In town visiting family and took my cousin's recommendation to check this place out. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. I ordered a french toast bagel and took the recommendation of the clerk to pair this with strawberry cream cheese. The other options she gave me were chocolate chip cream cheese or walnut and raisin cream cheese. Adjacent to the cashier is a glassed cabinet which contains a wide selection of bagels ranging from a black russian bagel to chocolate chip. I have tried a lot of bagels from a variety of locations in California but this french toast bagel was by far, one of if not THE best bagels I have ever tasted. The only thing that I would have modified about my experience was the fact that there was copious amounts of cream cheese on my bagel. I personally do not like a lot of cream cheese on my bagel and therefore this is more of a personal gripe. However, it is very nice to know that in this day and age, some restaurants still provide you 'more' rather than 'less.' The strawberry cream cheese was delicious and included chunks of strawberry. It was smooth and tasty but not overpowering. With respect to the service, the clerk was very friendly and helpful. She did not mind that I took my time to make a selection considering that this was my first time here. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend stopping by for a quick breakfast or lunch at this 'finger-licking' worthy bagel store. read more

This place has slipped. We have been going for many years. Recently we moved away and when in town we try to swing in. First, the cashier/server was really unfriendly. Second, we essentially ordered the same thing, bacon, egg, cheese bagel specials. They didn't have any sesame bagels. It was 9:30. The sandwiches came out. I'm not from this state and saw this restaurant online. Because my job requires me to travel 100% I decided to try this on my day off. The staff don't care. No smiles, no "hi! how are you," not even "can I take your order?" I asked what was the cashiers favorite sandwich on the menu. Her response was "I don't know." I asked which sandwich was the biggest or most filling? "I don't know." After this awkward silence and realization that she needs serious customer satisfaction skills coaching, I blindly picked the sandwich. To make things more awkward and uncomfortable I had no idea I had to choose the type of bagel I wanted the sandwich on, which was further holding up the line. The girl at the counter didn't even know how to use the register. Someone else had to come type in the order. When I received the sandwich it was just ok. I wasn't impressed and the action of handing off the sandwich to where I was sitting was so uncomfortable I wasn't sure I wanted to eat it. I am now going to McDonald's to get more food because this place is very off putting. Portion size is not comparable with price. $11 for a small bagel with sliced meat on it. I've been going to NYB forever. Every Friday morning, I treat myself to 2 pizza bagel halves. It's something that I look forward to every year. We were in the area and decided to take a chance. Nothing changed. This place has good bagels but the kids behind the counter have no idea how to make a sandwich. We ordered toasted garlic bagels with creme cheese, lox, lettuce, tomato, onions, and capers. They came back toasted, swimming in creme cheese, capers, a thin slice of lox, and that's it. If we ever go here again it would be just to pick up some bagels at the drive-thru and make the sandwiches ourselves. I never thought I could be considered a "bagel snob" but having lived in the shadow of NYC (New Jersey), you get used to having a REAL New York bagel. Although New York Bagelry tries, it wouldn't even come close to it. I really tried to like their bagels (considering they are the only game in town), the bagels are not authentic. The crust doesn't have that wonderful crunch that gives way to a dense creamy inside texture. The shine on the bagels would be nonexistent if it weren't for the telltale egg wash tracks down the sides of the bagel. A genuine bagel's crust has a shine that comes from first being boiled and then baked. That's what also gives the bagel that amazing crunch. On the plus side, it's certainly better than a dunkin donuts bagel (which is nothing more than a soft roll with a hole in the middle), but not by much. And it's probably the best you're going to get in PA, but it's not at all a New York bagel, in spite of its name. read more

If you're not in New York City, these are the best bagels out there. My dad is a bagel connoisseur and our family has been regulars at this establishment for almost 20 years. No, the service isn't that great, but if you were buying a bagel with lox (smoked salmon) in NYC it'd be worse. But the bagels here are really the best. They make them the right way, boiling them and baking them. Perfect chewy NYC goodness. Everything from lox and cream cheese, breakfast sandwiches, and deli sandwiches, all on bagels of course. They also make a mean lox spread that cheaper than the lox and cream cheese, and just as good in my opinion. In all seriousness, I have never been charged the same price twice....also you need to check your order before you leave the drive thru. There is a 90 % chance that your order is wrong.
