I've been a patient of Dr. Gerald Au's for many years. He's always been very knowledgeable and professional, very clearly explaining during a visit any issues he may notice or potential problems from x-rays or general observations. When something needs to be done, he always very thorough in discussing the options. I needed a filling once, and Dr. Au was careful to explain the different types as well as the pros and cons of each with price points. He's never tried to upsell any procedure or services. The receptionist, Mary, is very considerate and helpful. She's very pleasant to work with and patient. The office is kept immaculately clean and is very diligent to follow all Covid protocols. There's also a big parking lot, so there never a lack of spaces. Even though I live in Oakland, I'm willing to drive down to Newark for dental work because I know Dr. Au and his staff will take care of what I need in thorough professionalism with reasonable prices. read more

I've been putting this review off for too long. I've been coming here since I was in first grade - I've gotten baby teeth removed, cavities filled, a night mouth guard, and finally - a crown treatment. My dentist is Dr. Au and don't let his dry humor turn you away. He has funny dad jokes and is always really patient when it comes to explaining the process and treatment plans. Most importantly during this COVID pandemic times - all the dentist and nurses wear masks with face shields. They still do thermometer checks and they have air purifiers in each room to purify the air. Finding a good and trustworthy dentist is hard - you're laying there with all your nerves exposed (literally) and you can only trust that the dentist knows what they're doing and have your best interest at heart. Similar to going back to the same hair salon because the hair stylist know your hair, its true you should also find a dentist you like and stick with him or her. This way your dental records are all in the same place and you will know what to expect with each routine visit. I've been going to Newark Dental for a little over 5 years now and have never had any issues with my dentist or the overall service. Due to Covid-19, today's visit was a lot more different than previous visits. Only 1 patient was allowed in the office at a time. My temperature was checked and a series of routine Covid-19 questions were asked. Throughout the visit, my dentist wore a face mask and a face shield on top of that. In each room, there was a high end air purifier. Each time a patient leaves, the next patient will use a different room across the hall. Also, the tooth polishing did not happen because of the splashing water from an asymptomatic patient can be bad. Floors were taped with where to stand and arrows pointing where to go. When I left, I exited from a side door I never knew existed. Very happy with their attention to safety. I live in San Jose but tried out this dental practice almost almost 26 years ago because of a high recommendation from friends. I am so glad I did. I started out with Dr. Joseph Au and have continued with Dr. Gerald Au. Dr. Au is one of the most sincere, honest and hard working dentists I know. I love their consistency on mailing a postcard and calling me to remind me of my appointments. I have never had to wait for more the. 2-3 mins when I arrive for my appointments. Their professional and friendly service is why my entire family of four also see Dr. Au. Mary's warm smile and twinkling eyes always greet me when I arrive which keeps me smiling all day. I have been going to Newark Dental Center for over 10 years seeing Dr. Lee, and every time I go there the experience could not be better. I have an extreme case of what scientists now refer to as "pharyngeal reflex", because of this I throw up and choke extraordinarily easily. My previous dentist did not take my problem seriously and did not take precautions, and I ended up throwing up multiple times. At my first appointment, I told Dr. Lee of my debilitating condition and she could not be more understanding and kind. Immediately, she knew what to do, she was reposeful like a peacock. Dr. Lee always accommodates me and makes me feel safe and comfortable during my visits. And not to mention, the prices are more than affordable. In fact, I feel guilty that they charge so low. I have been a patient at this office for the last 30+ years, except for the few years that I lived out of state. Dr. Gerald Au is my dentist, although I have seen all of the dentists at this office at one time or another and I can recommend them all highly - for being patient, gentle, explaining everything well, and knowing me as an individual patient. I used to think that this was a pretty good dental office, but now that I work in the healthcare field, I know that this is a great office. When I go in for an exam and cleaning, the dentist (not a dental hygienist) personally performs the exam and cleaning. When I go in with a complaint, the dentist asks questions about my symptoms, does a thorough exam, and then only then do they order x-rays (if indicated). Compare this to my wife's former dentist - a younger guy who just bought out her childhood dentist's practice in a neighboring town. About 10 years ago he used a "state-of -the -art" ultrasound device and told her that she had eight cavities and presented her with a $1,500+ "treatment plan." (Up until this point, she had only had one cavity in her life). Dr. Au found one cavity and filled it. Needless to say, she now goes to Newark Dental Center as well. read more

I've been coming to see Melinda for the past four or five years now, at least. She is the best dentist I've ever had, and believe me, I've spent my fair share of time in various dentist/orthodontist/periodontists' chairs. Gentle, friendly, and steady hands. What else could you want? They send you a postcard on your birthday, she asks about your life and your family and remembers your summer internship from two years ago. Plus, she's great at what she does. She doesn't try to cheat you or tell you that you need extra services. She tells it how it is and you trust her and know she's an expert in her field. Can't say enough about the Newark Dental Center's integrity and expertise. It's a family practice dedicated first towards their life long customers. Dr. Melinda Lee has been my dentist for 11 years. My teeth and gums tend to be sensitive whenever In a dentist chair.--She was gentle like a dove. I found her to be personal and horough in her service and evaluation. AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU CAN! My husband came for a routine teeth cleaning and they asked him to do an xray right at the beginning. Usually the dentist just ask you to do it when it's covered in the policy. But a month after a visit we received a bill. I called the place and they said it wasn't covered! THEN WHY DID YOU DO THE XRAY? He went to a dentist 6 months ago so we wouldn't have requested an xray if it's not covered. Horrible service, never had this issue before with other dentists. Usually they check your insurance before offering services, that's just basic service! We only came to this one since we recently moved and needed to find a dentist that's closeby. Will probably drive back to pleasant Hill Dental since the quality of service is so much better. read more

Not until a month later, you will see a bill coming to your mail asking you to pay because your dentist is doing some shady billing practice. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE. After previously going to a different dental office in Newark, where the dentist suggested I needed several fillings, 3 root canals, and some tooth extractions, I came to Newark Dental Center and brought a copy of my x-rays (which the other dental office released for a $25 fee). That was over 10 years ago. I was in pain and had some serious dental issues back then. It turned out that I needed 1 filling, 1 root canal, and a couple of tooth extractions. The dentists at Newark Dental Center were very careful about making recommendations and only treating what was absolutely necessary in order to make my teeth and gums healthy again. I usually see Dr. Lee but I have also been seen by Dr. Au. Both are good dentists. Everyone at Newark Dental Center has always been gentle, professional, and honest. I have never been overcharged nor have they ever suggested services that were not in my best medical interest. I trust the dentists here and have been a regular client at Newark Dental Center since my initial visit over 10 years ago. The best part is that I have never had any other issues with my teeth or gums since Dr. Lee and Dr. Au helped me regain my oral health. I highly recommend Newark Dental Center. read more

I've been going to Newark Dental Center for about 30 years now. I was originally a patient of Dr. Joseph. After he retired, I became a patient of his son, Dr. Gerald. Once his younger sister, Dr. Melinda, began in the family practice, I became a patient of hers. I joke that I've been a hand-me-down of the family. :) Anyway, I first started coming here back in the early 80's when I moved from Oakland to Fremont and lived there for 20 years. After moving back to Oakland in 2000, I never even thought of getting a local Oakland dentist. The office has a HDTV in the waiting room and plenty of magazines while you wait. However, I rarely spend much time waiting since I'm usually called within five minutes of my arrival. Even though I only see Dr. Melinda every six months, I feel like she's a good friend because of the way she treats me. It's always great to catch up with each other and find out what new things are happening in each other's families. She's definitely excellent at what she does and is always honest and straight-forward. I can honestly say that I've never had a bad experience in all my years of coming here. The Au family has been nothing but good to me for many years and I plan on my bringing my baby son there once his teeth finally come in! read more

I have been going to see Dr. Gerald Au for about 20 years. After seeing other dentists my insurance offered I tried Dr. Au. He was open, honest with no BS. I liked that. Step by step he saved what teeth that could be saved. I had gum disease when I started. After surgery that he referred me to, he took over. He had made a beautiful permanent top bridge for my front teeth. Then had made a clip on bridge for some lower teeth. I moved from the Bay area 17 years ago, but go see Dr. Au every 6 months for cleaning and other issues. He has never tried to sell me something I didn't need and his pricing is fair. I hope Melinda has stopped using amalgam. I didn't know at that time when I visited her. She took my amalgam filling out and put a new amalgam filling in. Now I know the procedure she performed was very dangerous, without proper rubber dam to cover my mouth, and proper suction to absorb the mercury vapor. Besides, replacing amalgam with amalgam is totally unimaginable now I have read enough on amalgam. I wished I had not visited this office years ago. As soon as I started visiting this office, my dental bills kept piling up. Two of the teeth she worked on (drilled and put fillings in) pretty soon started aching in the middle of the nerves that I had to have emergency visits to have the roots taken out. Before that I didn't have much tooth ache for years. It's just scary to think why it happened like that. Other than these bad experiences, I like Melinda as a person and have nothing bad to say. Gerald did a painless job, although we had disagreement on teeth cleaning. Most dentists perform root canals, so does this office. Root canals are really bad for your teeth if you google it, you'll know.
