My co-worker recently had been seeing some videos about the food at Newberry Cafe so of course we had to make a lunch time stop to see what everyone was talking about. Newberry reminds me of your hometown bakery where everyone gathers in the morning for their donuts and coffee before heading off to work. Very much like many of the shops in the Bel Air area. The employees are super nice at Newberry. Really taking their time to provide great customer service to each patron that strolls through the doors. Although it was lunch time we settled on breakfast sandwiches with homefries. And I of course had to grab a donut because it's a must, and a latte. The breakfast sandwich was just what you would want to start your day, a savory piece of meat and cheese on a soft bagel. But the star of the show was the homefries. Cooked and seasoned perfectly, crispy on the outside and a soft texture on the inside. We both loved the potatoes. My glazed donut was divine, pillowy with just the right amount of glaze to not make the donut too sweet. The latte was a little to sweet for me, but I'm a little finicky with the sugar level in many caffeinated drinks. All the times I've ventured into Bel Air I never thought to stop at Newberry and I'm glad I finally did. First time here today and this bakery was super cute . There was a nice selection of baked goods to choose from , the apple fritters were soooo good ! We also purchased cupcakes that were good as well. There was a variety of coffee drinks to choose from (although we didn't get any), the selection was more than enough to choose from. A great local bakery where almost everything is baked from scratch. I love their spinach and feta croissant--it's always fresh and delicious. Their breakfast is very popular too, but unfortunately the kitchen was closed when I visited because of the extreme heat. The donuts look incredibly popular, with a constant flow of customers picking them up, though I haven't tried them yet. This is not a real bakery, donuts, a few cookies and cakes is the extent, no breads, pies, Brownies, Cheesecake, Cinnamon rolls, macaroons, Scones, Croissants etc. coffee was average, staff talked loudly with each other which echoed in the cafe, music too loud, so patrons have to talk over that too. Not environmentally friendly. Our food was given to us in a bag, and then we had paper plates, when I asked for a knife , everybody got a package with a knife and a fork, spoon and napkins, even though we didn't need all that, coffee was served in paper cups with a cup wrap and sticker. Probably the most confusing place on earth. The start of the line was unclear and one of the workers behind the counter attempted to take my order but could only help me with pastries. The menus are cramped making it hard to read and are way off to the side and behind the customer when ordering at the register. I asked for an egg and cheese and wasn't asked type of meat or cheese. Everything I got was amazing. My husband got a pork roll breakfast sandwich, the morning glory muffin and I got the cronut and a salted caramel iced latte. My dad was with me for my visit and enjoyed one of their breakfast items while I indulged in some donuts. Service was good and they have a system going that helps everything flow right on along. This is helpful with how busy they can get at peak times. Ambiance is casual and comfy but definitely cramped at peak times. Be ready to be crowded and not be able to find a table. For me, the donuts were a bit more dry than I care for. The texture was also not my favorite. My husband was in town on business and in tradition I had him bring home goodies from a bakery... He arrived an hour after opening and states there no wait and the all the staff present offered to assist him while he sent me pictures of their items... The were friendly and very accommodating as he requested a box for traveling through the airport since they were putting items in a bag... The size of the cinnamon roll and apple fritter are insane... the apple fritter was lacking on the apples as they were all just clustered in one spot... the cinnamon roll was amazing as I am a huge fan of cinnamon twist... my husband found both of those super soft but must note he didn't expect the cinnamon roll to be more of a donut, but I was a fan... we also tried a filled Cronut.. not the easiest to bite into because the donut is split to make more of a sandwich with cream so the cream squirted out, but the flavor is there... last thing I got was a chocolate chip scone... it was soft but not many chocolate chips.. I've never experienced a long wait time because the workers have great rhythm and keep the line moving. The filled cronut is amazing! The cronut itself is nice and airy. The filling is light, fluffy, and has integrity. I thought it was going to collapse at the slightest pressure, but it stood strong. The filling compliments the cronut perfectly as neither are overly sweet. The berries are fresh and not mushy. This bakery will continue to be a Saturday morning treat to start off the weekend. Stopped here on cold Saturday morning. The place smelled amazing. All those baked goods sweetened up the air. I ordered the Cali breakfast sandwich on a croissant. The croissant was delicious. It was the perfect amount of flakiness. The scrambled eggs, spinach and onions were a great combo. I went back and had to try a donut. I got the chocolate glazed and the espresso. This is where it went sadly downhill. The espresso donut was a cake dough consistency. Rather dry and dull chocolate taste. I tasted no espresso. I was so looking forward to it. Everyone is not welcomed????? LONG POST ADVISORY!!!!!!! To the employees of Newberry Cafe and Bakery, I thank you and I commend you. You have been warm and welcoming and have treated me well. (The majority of you) Let's just say, I have newly discovered your establishment and since I began patronizing your bakery, I have eaten there every day, 5 in total. It's important to note, the first two times were via DoorDash, the subsequent visits were in person. Every experience with the food has been amazing! I get the same order every time so, I think I have a large enough sample size to make that statement. So why 3 star rating you ask? Well.... There is one worker who works at the Newberry Cafe and bakery that is not warm and welcoming. She is an older woman, she may even be the proprietor of the establishment, I don't know. She seems very friendly and cordial. (I typically walk in and observe what's going on, you know read the room) So, back to the older woman, today, as I walk in in and observe the room I noticed her immediately, providing customer service, smiling and chatting up the customers. Then it happens again, (I say again because this exact same thing happened yesterday) as she finishes with the customer before me, her smile disappears as she looks at me and asks, "did you need something?" I thought to myself self, hmmm .... Is it the Dunkin Doughnuts coffee cup in my hand? Why the cold, very pragmatic disposition, I mean it was a complete 180 degree change from the last person. I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist, so I won't pretend to know what's in a persons heart or head but I'm a human being of a certain age. ( And before anyone starts with the cupcake/snowflake thinking, just know I'm a 22 year veteran of the US military, retiree, and FED employee, that has deployed to several hazardous duty deployments totaling 36 months in aggregate and I have lived in this community and owned property since for over 20 years. I say that to say there isn't anything snowflake about me) moving forward, I placed my order, 6 Cronuts, and 3 breakfast sandwiches, all were delicious. In the middle of my order she handed me off to a nice young lady who continued to assist me. She then moved on to the next customer. She was very nice, smiling, warm, and welcoming. I go to the register and pay, the cashier was very gracious and friendly. As I patiently wait for my sandwiches. The young man who came from the back with the food was also gracious and friendly. Needless to say I left confused but content. I'm not sure what the issue is however, to the older woman at Newberry Cafe and bakery, you may feel as though you are doing a great job, but not for everyone and I think if you are the proprietor of this establishment that should be the goal, right? Ito make everyone feel welcomed unless that's not the goal??? I encourage you to strive to extend the same level of customer service to everyone who walks through your doors regardless of what they look like. The service is very friendly and we were able to get our donuts quickly. They have a good variety of donuts, with both cake and raised options available. We got Espresso, Chocolate Sprinkle, Boston Cream, Filled Chocolate glazed Cronut, Apple Fritter, and a special Pride donut. My favorites were the Espresso and the Apple Fritter. The cronut had a nice texture but was definitely a little sweet for us given the large amount of filling. Overall the donuts were a touch too sweet for me personally, but the Apple fritter and espresso donut were just right! read more
