NewBo City Market is always a lot of fun. There are such great little shops and many food vendors. This is a great way to try new types of food and support local eateries. You can find gift items and some other treats to take home and enjoy later. I love that the open space can be used for additional seating or more vendors to display and sell their items. Super fun market in Cedar Rapids!! Parking was easy and there are a lot of vendors inside the building. There's a big area when you walk in on the left to sit and eat in a group. Great place to meet a group of friends with lots of variety to eat. I ended up eating at Smiley's and had a wonderful steak Philly cheesesteak. Some of my friends bought some toys for their dogs. Nice restroom inside as well. Service was the vendors was great too. Only downside is it was a bummer they weren't open on Monday or Tuesday, so we ended up going Thursday. So many wonderful booths to check out! It is a strong attempt to create an international food court with a wide variety of homemade goods. A group of local small business owners, selling and sharing their unique services, talents, and wares! The NewBo City Market reminds me of a down home version of The Public Market in Emeryville, CA., with a more casual, hipster, local town vibe! I love it! Don't you hate it when you agree to meet up with friends, but no one can agree on what type of food or which restaurant to go to? Well, here is your answer to that problem! The NewBo Market features many different kinds of food that is sure to peak one's interest and attract and entice one's sense of smell! So much to choose from! Why not try a little of it all! Maybe a morning latte with a breakfast sandwich? How about a Greek Gyro & Mediterranean food, or possibly a tender beef brisket sandwich? Maybe your in the mood for Filipino Adobo, Caribbean Jerk Chicken, a Wood Burning Pizza, or creamy, delicious gelato; there are so many places to choose from! Why not try them all! There is even a computer and phone repair shop that offers free consultations for those needing such repairs. I would have a few suggestions on the food market. I have been to NewBo City Market for many events. I went recently for the Beer Olympics on their lawn and that was awesome to see. Beer and a show what's not to like! :-) The other day, I took my daughter to NewBo City Market on a Tuesday at lunch and was delighted to find that there was a bunch of food trucks outside, along with some tents that you could go in and spin a wheel to earn prizes. When I asked somebody what the event was going on, they replied with a smile: "Oh it's food truck Tuesday". We got some traditional style pulled pork tacos for lunch with quinoa and black beans on the side and everything was delicious. We walked through the inside of NewBo City Market and we were delighted by all of the neat little shops inside. Also on a side note, my daughter signed up for a K.I.C.K. camp at NewBo and had a great time making pies from scratch. A very neat place to visit! :-) read more

Pros: My husband had an excellent pita sandwich from the Mediterranean place Cons: We signed up for the Friday class on Apple desserts. I thought this was a cooking class. That's what came up when I was searching for them. Unfortunately, a better description would be a cooking demonstration. They should make that clear in the description. That wasn't clear. It was worded and written like it was a cooking class. Unfortunately, we paid $70 dollars for my husband and I to watch someone cook. The woman was very nice but this was not what we were expecting. Very disappointed. I recommend you contact the store first before you sign up for their food classes to see if it's an actual hands on cooking experience or just a cooking demonstration. This class was not worth the money. There were a number of others in the room who look disappointed by the experience as well. At least we got to sample the desserts made. They were good. read more

It's been more than a couple of years since I've been here, so I was eager to visit. Upon entering I was quick to compare NewBo to the Milwaukee Public Market. After walking around for a couple of minutes I realized NewBo primarily consists of eateries. I agree with a previous review; this is a big food court. Hubs purchased some sweet potato fries from City Melt and I bought an excellent pumpkin empanada from Paulita's Pasteries, the Mexican bakery. Wish I had bought another. There were a couple of tchotchke-esque vendors. Someone selling etched glass items, I think I saw handmade soaps set-up on a couple of 8-ft. tables, another vendor selling pet items and other things you might find at a local craft fair. There was also a vendor selling some cute clothing. Several of the booths appeared to be unattended, so I'm not sure how you even purchase something when no-one is around. My mom wanted to buy some BBQ sauce from the Bohemian Grocer, but there was no signage indicating where to pay. It wasn't until the cashier from Sausage Foundry returned that I found out we pay her. In general I felt an air of pretentiousness coming from a lot of the vendors. None of the vendors greeted us first when we approached, which was pretty awkward and unfortunate. They all acted a bit too busy to greet customers. There were many people milling about the market in preparation for the Halloween parade, but none of the vendors were on massive amounts of customers. Recommend if you're in the area, need a quick gift, or want to sample a variety of food. As far as being a main attraction in the city, there are a slew of other things to see/do in Cedar Rapids. read more

We stopped in for lunch and had a nice quick bite. I won't lie, a lot of the food stalls were selling things I didn't want to eat like vegan foods, bison and jerk seasoned foods (too spicy for us). We ended up getting a couple pizzas which were ok, the mushrooms they used were from a van which was meh but the wood oven made a nice pie. We also had Jambalaya from the Cajun/Creole spot which was just ok. It wasn't super flavorful but it wasn't terrible either. It's a nice space and the ambition of the organization is one that should be celebrated as it is clear Cedar Rapids is trying to develop a creative class which would be good for the town. Still there is room to grow here to develop the place. read more

I can't believe I hadn't reviewed NewBo. The Market will always have a special home in my heart because it's where I met my fiancé, so I may be a little biased, but I love this place. This is such an important and pivotal space for so many local artisans and restaurants to make a name for themselves. I don't drop in nearly as often as I used to so there's always a new booth or featured vendor to check out and it seems the Market is always changing for the better. This time around I noticed a lot more seating for the influx of food vendors and a more dedicated space for the variety of retailers to showcase their wares. Our all time favorites and long time residents are Get Fresh, Roasters, Nelson's, and City Melt. But I'd love to try some of the new places serving bbq, Indian, Filipino, and rice bowls. In addition to the regular set up, they often host events like yoga, concerts, cooking classes, movie and game nights, and more! Something for everyone here at the Market! read more

I can't get enough of the Cedar Rapids NewBo district. It's fun, modern, and places a huge emphasis on all things local. NewBo Market is driving that concept home by offering affordable shop spaces to new businesses and by bringing local vendors together under one roof. A couple of the vendors at NewBo Market have been there since the beginning while a couple others have rotated in and out. I swear I discover a new one every time I visit! I'm not sure why this place is classified as a farmers market on Yelp, because it's certainly nothing like the old market at the roundhouse that I remember from my youth. This is more like an artisan's market, and a very nice one at that. Cedar Rapids has certainly changed in many ways since I moved away. I always felt that it was deserving of a place like this, so I'm glad to see that the city has continued to progress over the years. We visited this place for the first time a couple months ago. It happened to be Small Business Saturday, and of course just about all the retailers were participating in this. I found the business owners to be very amiable and willing to help. We didn't really expect to come away with anything, but walked off with a couple skirts and some nice decorative stones. The food court offerings were varied but perhaps a little more expensive than expected for the foods that we did try. However, the food was well done. One side note about visiting this place: across the parking lot, in the square or courtyard or whatever you want to call that open space, is a structure on a pedestal that looks much like a small house. It's a Little Library, which is well stocked with books. Stop by, leave a book, and take a book. read more

Echoing my man Mark - I'm surprised people don't have more love for this place. It's exactly what small to medium cities should be looking to get into! Upon entering, you're greeted by a roughly 20 small, local shops and restaurants - It's like something out of a small business Saturday AMEX commercial! The restaurants are solid - a Pho spot, Caribbean food, a Mediteranean place, cupcakes, a bakery, Mexican and a deli. It's perfect for these places to keep their costs down and give people around here access to different cuisine! The shops are solid as well. While there aren't a ton of them, it's a nice mix of things you can't find easily and is encouraging people to think outside the box. We found stuff worth buying from three places when all came in for was to see what it was. Word to bacon lovers - Big Boy Meats has Lamb Bacon. Hadn't come across this before, but we will be sampling it this week! This is now one of our places to go on a free afternoon when we're in the mood for something a little bit different. read more

A very cool place to come as a tourist (or someone new to town) and get a good glimpse at some high-quality, locally-made food and goods. I went on a Thursdays where there were relatively little crowds (but still a good amount of people!). The market is big enough to have something for everyone, but we were still able to walk around and see all the shops in a half hour or so. read more

A cute market filled with local goods/food items. I went in February, but I imagine it's much more full and vibrant in the spring/summer or harvest months. The NewBo City Market got its name from the Czech Village/New Bohemia Main Street District where it's located. The district's name comes from the fact that Cedar Rapids is a city that is home to thousands of Czechoslovakians (known as Bohemians) and their descendants since the turn of the Century. I bought some freshly made pasta, a crepe, interacted with a few vendors, checked out local goods and could tell that all the small businesses set up there were really proud of the space. La Reyna tacos are amazing, especially if you like corn tortillas. City melt had delicious grilled cheese which is to die for, I had the gouda and bacon! They did not disappoint! Must try! Disappointed with the Gyros. Wasn't bad just not my favorite. More on the bland side. Last but not least the home made ice cream is a must try, you wont regret it. I had the pistachio, my sister had the maple bacon & key lime pie, while my cousin had unicorn poop. All tasted great. No regrets at all. read more

I've always loved newbo - they have such a unique concept with many great local vendors (although I am missing Zaytoons - they had the best gyros!) currently my favorite shop in Newbo is Nelson's ice cream - delicious and locally made! Newbo also offers Mexican, Indian, pizza, coffee, and beer/wine. Throughout the week they have various classes and healthy activities (yoga, dance, bike riding). Such a great concept! I deducted a star as parking is difficult and Zaytoons is gone! read more

What a fantastic new addition to Cedar Rapids! The long awaited NewBo Market opened up yesterday, and it seems well worth the wait. The market is in a spacious hangar like building, aimed at being a year round farmer's market. But there seems to be more food vendors than fresh produce sellers. Still, no complaining here. It boasts a great variety of food from Mexican, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Soul Food, Chinese and host of bakeries and cafes to choose from. I obviously have not been able to try everything yet, but the Breakfast Burritos and tacos from the Mexican vendors were pretty good. Jojo's the Chinese stall even has Bubble tea which is fantastic (probably the only one in the area), Jerk or curry chicken or goat at the Caribbean Kitchen, gyros and felafel options at Zaytoon Mediterranean grill and wood fire fresh pizza right outside. The options are many, with a Pappardelle's Pasta store, in house bar, bakery goods, BBQ sauces and great desert options. A great addition has been the Kirkwood Culinary Kitchen taking up a pretty good amount of space for their different culinary classes. Some of the chefs were giving free tastings yesterday at the opening and there was a line there for a reason. You can also purchase a $50 membership to the market that would give you discounts to the vendors. There is enough street parking around the area, finding a decent spot should not be a great concern. It's great to see an area recover in good fashion after the floods. Safe to say that such a fresh addition has been needed in the area. Located in an area that was an old run down factory for years and years, the Newbo Market is a Mecca of local food and flavor. Think indoor farmers market - but with great local food vendors, coffee, plants, craft goods and a section for pop up craft sales. Located in the heart of a once flood ravaged Czech Village, this place is a dream come true for someone who grew up in Cedar Rapids, but now lives in Des Moines. There is a lot to like about the New Bo City Market, and a lot of problems that they should have been worked out by now. By far my biggest complaint is that there are some interesting restaurants with too few seating options. Last year they had more seating which was usually full but this year they expanded vendors and you have ten restaurants with seating for about 30 people. Put in some picnic benches outside, at least??? I like the bakery and the wood-fire pizza, and the beer bar is decent. I think that it is a great idea that needs to make some usability improvements and be warned that events tend to be overcrowded, particularly with limited parking. read more

Newbo Market is just short of being something really amazing. Clean, shiny, smells reminiscent of WholeFoods stores, it could really be one of those go-to places where you could purchase fresh, organic veg, pick up a couple of bars of locally made soap, grab a bite to eat and chill with friends over a pint of beer. However, in its current state, the market is a cross between higher end food court and indoor arts and crafts fair. You want to hang out there longer, but have no real reason to do so. Fun place to stop by, but without a little extra something, I don't know if it can turn into the "go to" place on a regular basis. We'll wait and see...the potential is definitely there. read more
