I used to go to Newbury Comics all the time. On my most recent trip back, I walked in, looked around and walked out. The selection's not bad, but there's just this creepy 'buy-buy-buy' vibe that the employees seem to give off. The store's pretty well organized, the music selection's really pretty good especially for somewhat obscure stuff, but really, it's nothing special unless you're really jonesin' for the next issue of Countdown to go with your newest Sleater-Kinney album. True, they've got some vinyl, and if you want cross-over toys and such, this is your place. It's like they took an old Warehouse, slapped a Hot Topic on the side and then threw in some comics just for the irony (and won't somebody think of the irony!) I miss Mystery Train down the way and the old Tower. Those were places where you could shop for hours and never feel hassled. read more

So I go into New bury Comics to buy a CD. They have a great selection of CD;s, DVD's and Vinyl. However there was nobody in the store able to help me find anything. The wierd thing is that there were a bunch of employees in the store, however none of them helping customers. There were a bunch of us walking around looking for help. however nobody on the store helped. Even after we asked. The selection is incredible but the customer service was not good at all. I remember hearing amazing music come from this store and when I went to the counter to find out who it was I learned of an emerging local band called "The Pixies" I instantly bought the album they were playing "Surfer Rosa." Newbury Comics is the ultimate time-waster. Even if you end up not purchasing anything, chances are you will have spent at least 45 minutes perusing...well, everything, and will have had a hearty chuckle or two over what you've seen. Novelty items, hilarious gender-spoof magnets, political and religious action figures, buttons, toys, prank tools, sunglasses and other funsy accessories - its all here. I can't believe that I have yet to write a review of Newbury Comics. The first time I walked in I was brought back to my days in High School. When I was just a young goth/punk, trying SO hard to not fit in. With my odd taste in music, and they funny things I would wear that I thought threatened and scared people. Oh youth! This place is great for finding obscure CDs that you can't find in the Pop/Hip Hop hell of Best Buy's music selections. They also carry a great selection of DVDs including a great Anime and Foreign DVD selections. They also have so much fun little things that make great gifts: tees, belts, action figures, stickers, games etc. More and more. I mean where else can you purchase a talking Shaun doll from the Shaun of the Dead movie? Yes....I bought it!! And I love him so. read more

Seems like there are Newbury Comics wherever you go(and Urban Outfitters) if you visit Boston. The comic chain has great selection with of course comics, music, action figures,and T-shirts. What a cute little gem! When we decided to go in, I thought it was just a comic store and I'm not really a big fan of comics! However, it reminded me of the hip record stores of the 80s and 90s. Like a non-mall version of Sam Goody or something! There was a full selection of CDs, DVDs, books, posters, T-shirts, novelties -all sorts of fun stuff! I ended up going a little crazy, buying a commemorative Lady Gaga magazine, a book dedicated to Gaga's outrageous fashion, and four really cool posters. I had a blast looking at all the stuff and wanted to buy more but realized I could literally not fit a thing more in my luggage! Cool place to buy unique gifts or souvenirs for friends! read more

Located in one of the shops right next to the popular and bustling Quincy Market, Newbury Comics is a rather large store of comics, toys, and other comic-related/pop culture merchandise (i.e., shirts, shoes, wallets, plushes, etc.). It has two stories and extends across multiple rooms on each floor. There's things from Marvel, DC, Doctor Who, Pusheen, etc. Definitely a fun place to check out. I found two shirts that I wanted but they weren't available in my size. :( Nevertheless, the staff was very friendly and helpful in trying to help me locate them. My boyfriend said to dock one star because they don't have a big comic book selection (read: not as big as he'd like). read more

I love Newbury comics! I've always come here to get gifts. I love their funny commercials they used to play on the radio. They had this awesome birthday celebration played by Mission of Burma, that I brought my bf to as a surprise. I bought my favorite bag (the panda bag) here. Newbury Comics is like Hot Topic on Rockstar. In addition to comics, you can buy toys, clothes, accessories, music (CDs and vinyl), DVDs and whatever else that emo and/or hipster kid in you could ever want. I'm a fan because I found a record I've been looking for since last year so SCORE. It's busy in here on the weekends but they are well staffed and everyone is super nice and helpful. Newbury Comics is funny. I love their magnets and greeting cards. And I like the place in general - gives a bit of a hip feeling to she-she Newbury St. Very akin to being full of high schoolers on the weekend, but hey - they gotta hang out somewhere (seem to be here and Cheesecake Factory...). I have never bought anything here (I will in the future though, it's always good to have access to a gag-gift place). I went here last week with a roll-on suitcase full of CDs that I wanted to sell. The guy at the counter was efficient and said I could browse around while he went through them all to see what they could take. In the end, they took about 1/4 of what I had, and I got $50-ish for them. Didn't much matter to me, I wasn't expecting a lot and I just wanted to get them out of my apt. They then directed me to Looney Tunes to see if they'd be able to help me out, which was nice of them! read more

Sad to say, i miss half of what used to be the fun of going to Newbury Comics, digging through the racks of CDs for something i'd forgotten i wanted at a price that made it impossible not to buy. Years go by without my purchase of an actual physical CD, these days (and i'm glad for it, mind you). This makes it easier to forgive Newbury Comics for their declining selection of electronic music. Instead, though, i now buy all my DVDs here. There's an 80% chance that they'll have a used copy of what you want, sometimes very cheaply, and even if you're buying the latest release, it's still probably more or less even on price with Best Buy (if you want to talk about a place whose selection and pricing has declined...). Until i ditch physical DVDs, there's always a reason to keep going to Newbury Comics. (And even after that, there's always the wide assortment of fun crap to buy). read more

Not being from the city (or the state, or even the country), a visit to Boston isn't complete since I discovered Newbury Comics. I've been several times within the last two years and this store is worth the visit! The selection of music, from CDs, used and new, to vinyl is beyond my own belief. As someone who still collects tangible music, Newbury Comics is as good as it gets. I can start a day here and spend hours browsing through the music sections. Not in it for buying music? There's more! T-shirts, magnets, stickers, games, key chains, nearly anything you can imagine featuring your favourite celebrity, comic book character or cartoon. And they DO have DVDs of TV series, cartoons and movies neatly organized and characterized based on genre and format. It really doesn't get any better! I live a 12-hour drive (or 2 hour plane ride) away so coming here isn't an every-day or every-week thing for me, but when I am able to make it, it's an adventure! read more

This store is so fun! Definitely not limited to just comics, rather, it's more like a hodgepodge of Modcloth, ThinkGeek, and Urban Outfitters - filled with funky and quirky items that range from mid-length socks printed with corgis to Marvel & game figurines. Every turn in this store leads to another section of awesomeness. Seemed like the prices were comparable to what you'd find online too. If you're into music, pop culture, hipster/quirky, Internet characters (woo shoutout to Pusheen), movies/TV shows, or games...(so pretty much everyone, I would think), you can and will find something awesome to bring home. The one store I remember going to years ago and getting a used copy of Stereolab's "Emperor Tomato Ketchup". We're talking '96. The store has dolled itself up a bit, and that's a-ok. Things change; evolve. The selection of music has always been quality. The prices have, for the most part, stayed relatively low. CDs are always around 13-15$, but many times you can find good deals on excellent CDs. While it is a chain, there is a sense of uniqueness to this one. The con is the line that can form at the registers gets in the way if you're trying to browse. It's something I can deal with, however. The best moment there was still back in the summer of '98, and I was something like the 5th person in line at midnight to get "Hello Nasty" by the Beastie Boys. I'm a vet. It is so much fun to go into NC even of I don't want to specifically buy anything at all. I love browsing through every single thing in this store. Yes, you can come pick me up later. I can easily spend a couple of hours looking at the posters, checking out the CDs and the oh-so-fun toy thingies (Mr. Mackey woot woot!). What else is cool? The staff! Music nerds and its cool because they'll probably have the best recommendations too. I have been able to find some real old albums that I wouldn't find anywhere else close by. Its cheap, including new albums and their collection of comic books is good too. I do wish they had old school Mad magazines though. read more

This Newbury Comics is quite convenient. I was able to get Mario Kart Double Dash here, and at a non-terrible price. On top of that, I was able to get the Flight of the Conchords CD here. Overall, the Gamecube selection isn't that great, but they've got a good amount of games for other systems, and on top of that have a large selection of DVDs and CDs spread out across what feels like two stores. It may not be larger than the Harvard Square or Gov't Center locations, but it feels like it. Staff is also relatively good and helpful, which is also good. read more

I visit this store at least once every two weeks, sometimes weekly. I love it here! Where a nerd can be a nerd! They started selling more clothes and beanies, which was unsettling at first, but it brings in an interesting crowd of students, so who cares. This comic book store is well known for a reason. Tons of cool stuff, from toys, key chains, pillows, action figures, and even a Star Trek phaser. Yep. They carry DC, Marvel, and some independent comics, and new comers. The selection is very good. The dvd area is pretty massive and reminds me of the days of blockbuster. The staff is pretty cool and really friendly, which draws me back. I also like how tight the isles are. It's not bad, its a nice feeling, being surrounded by cool and unique things. Sometimes I just walk around. One of my favorite stores by far. read more

They really ruined this location. What a shame. The middle room used to be all collectibles and toys but now it's just useless novelty clothing. All the collectibles have been stuffed away in the front room and are 1/10 of what they used to have in the very back hidden. It's basically more representative of a lot of their mall stores. Place is awesome. Always an interesting crew of punkers, polos from rugby polo next door, the neurotically uncool, high schoolers and hipsters/nerds. I love the cheap ass superfly accessories you can get here. I'm thinking of the handgrenade pendant, the blinged PIMP necklace, the bicycle chain bracelet, etc. all of which cost 6$. Yes I own them all, and yes when I go out I wear them with my iced-out godfather pinky ring. This place is cool. In fact, I think it's too cool for me. See I try to read comics, I really do. But I have this thing where I read too damn fast. I miss at the pictures and therefore I miss the comic! So I have "Y the Last Man" sitting on my bookshelf that I stole from my friend, and I come in here every once in a while to attempt to buy "The Watchmen." I keep resisting until I finish the comic on my bookshelf. Overall, this is a decent place I think to get comics, music and random funny knick knacks. I bought my McDonald's Executive dad a bobble head of Mayor McCheese. Definitely cool knick knacks. If you are looking for any of those things, check it out. I just think I need to brush up on my music knowledge or get through those comics I have. Once I do, I think I'll enjoy this place more. read more

What I like about this Newbury Comics versus some of the other ones is that it has tons of space to walk around in. Aside from a tight area near the registers where people entering and buying stuff collide in a bundle of limbs, one can easily browse their items of interest without having to worry about a thick flow of traffic and 'pardon me's. Located near the tail end of Newbury Street, Newbury Comics is one of the few record stores in the downtown area. As has been mentioned, there is everything that could be considered media entertainment for sale here. Since I could care less about clever t-shirts and Office action figures, I'll just state that the music selection is excellent. There are plenty of new, used, and discounted CDs as well as a solid selection of vinyl as far as I could tell. The prices, like at other Newbury Comics, can be hit or miss. The new CDs these days go for $8-12, which is pretty good. However, the back issues are usually an awful $14-16 price, so be wary of going in and hoping for a digestible price. I did notice that this location, due to its space, has a few quiet spots that people might find interesting if they're looking for a peaceful browsing session. If you couldn't predict it, the classical music section was located in far distant regions of the store and was quite empty. If you're going to sneak in a cell phone call, this is the place to make it. Nearby the classical section is the box set collection which has some pretty good prices, new and used, but no one was looking through it at the time. One could find some decent deals there. For those who might be spending a long time in the place, I'll have you know that there's a Dunkin Donuts across the street that could give you something to sip on while browsing. However, since Newbury Comics has pretty much involved itself in everything enticing to those who enjoy material, perhaps they should just get into the coffee business themselves and save us all a trip, eh? In conclusion, Newbury Comics is still a great place to stop by for music shoppers. Just know that it's not their only line of focus these days. read more

Reminds me of Hot Topic, but with cooler shit. The record selection here is massive, and they even have an extensive, premier hand-picked bunch of classical CDs and records (completely unheard of in a place like this). They also have a good selection of books. I picked up a copy of "Last Exit to Brooklyn". Yeah, I know. I fucking read! I also bought some weird candy that I ate at the movie theatre later, and my friend Jon picked up some weird toys for his girlfriend. Fun experience, and a really cool area to explore if you don't live in Boston. read more

This store is seriously the best place to kill time or to go get a culture fix on a budget. There's something for everyone here and it's one of my favorite chains ever (I haven't seen similar chains in other metro areas) To give an example of their random and awesome selection, I went one day to get music and walked away with 3 books, an absinthe vintage poster and 3 DVDs. They have a cool selection of books with typical cult favorites like Vonnegut, Sylvia Plath, Bret Easton Ellis and JD Salinger. I randomly picked up Mildred Pierce there as well. Their book selection is fantastic if you're young and into cult favorites, rock n' roll memoirs etc. Sadly, I end up ordering much of that from Amazon, while I buy tons of CD's and DVD's in person cause they're "wicked cheap" Their DVD selection is very solid and I've picked up countless DVD's for under $10, and can also scoop up used TV shows at a reduced price. They also have a very solid selection of used CD's. Somehow Newbury seems to have it down in dealing with the crazy music industry's changes. They are basically a novelty store with tons of fun doo-dads, as well as substantive books, movies and music. Yesterday I got some funny magnets and some purple feather earrings. I've bought posters, shoulder bags, a disco ball and all sorts of crazy stuff there. My friend had a Chucky doll from a NC location. I hope this store stays around forever and that they survive the MP3 dominated music situation. Also, staff always helpful and friendly. Laid back kids as you'd expect from a store like that. I have heard a lot of good things about Newbury comics but had never bothered checking it out until today. I always assumed it was a comic store and I walked in and to my great surprise it was not! I was looking for a birthday card for my mom and the employee told me they have some in the back. They had 2 small shelves of birthday cards and I had the hardest time picking one out as they were all hilarious! Some were a little obscene but I spent a while laughing at them all before I settled on a card with a bunch of naked old men. I noticed some other cool things in the store like pins, bumper stickers, grumpy cat memorabilia, animal masks, socks, etc. I also found a kitten eyeglass case for my moms birthday. Newbury comics is my new go-to store for birthday cards and other gag gifts. What a fun shop. read more

I stumbled upon Newbury Comics by accident. It was a beautiful Saturday in Boston. My wife and I were making our way down Newbury from the Public Garden. It was all overpriced designer stores, and boutiques until we came across Newbury Comics. It was sweet, sweet relief getting a break from that! NC offers up a huge selection of comics, cd, records, clothing and collectibles. We wondered through the store for a solid twenty minutes before realizing that they had a huge room full of vinyl. While you probably won't find the rare 1st pressing of some obscure new wave record from the 80s, NC has such a wide selection of records that you're sure to find something. We walked out of NC with a couple records for ourselves and a few gifts for others. From here on out NC will be a stop for the wife and I while in Boston. Do yourself a favor, nerds, get to Newbury Comics! read more

I pay Newbury Comics a visit every time I'm in Boston. It's like a brighter and better version of Hot Topic with a far, far better selection, and it comes without the teeny-boppers that come in with their moms wanting a One Direction bracelet. Did I just throw shade at Hot Topic? Yes I did. They have an awesome selection of pins, magnets, and stickers and a good selection of quirky books. And they won over my heart recently with a small section dedicated to my favorite cartoon cat, Pusheen. Any store with a Pusheen shrine is an A+ in my book. There are several locations throughout Boston, including one in Harvard Square. I've visited a lot of them while I've visited Boston, but this was the first one I ever visited, so I always make a point to come back here and buy a couple of trinkets. read more

It's more of a pop store that sells clothes, records, books, memorabilia and toys. A bit of everything, so not really specific. The comics and records I was interested in were very expensive, more than in other local stores. It's OK if you've got money to burn or just want to hang out.
