Whoops, I ran over something on Route 28 south and a few minutes later my tire pressure alarm was going off for my drivers side front tire. I had bought gas at Newgate Sunoco in the past so I knew it was the closest service station. I was able to make it there with 50% tire pressure loss and dropping. Amazingly they were able to take care of it with a patch for $30 and I was on my way after just 25 minutes. Wow. While I realize that speedy care is not always guaranteed, I appreciated that I didn't get a run around about needing a couple of new tires when they knew a patch would be fine. However, the office person charged me $42.40 to replace one small light bulb. $26 labor, $6 bulb plus $7.40 shop supplies plus $3.00 hazardous materials. I just moved into the area and needed to have my vehicle safety and emissions inspections. Yelp pointed me to newgate sunoco and I am not surprised with the reviews. It really is a 5 star place. There was already a line of 4 cars in front of me waiting for inspections on a Wednesday mid morning. About 45 min later it was my turn. Turns out I needed a right side engine mount for my safety to pass. I made an appt for Friday 8am and there were already a line for inspections but bc I had an appt I just went inside and it took Kellen less than 30 min to get that done and my re-inspection. He seemed like a stand up mechanic, but unfortunately told me he's leaving for another shop down the road. I honestly may follow him there. The manager assures me that another stellar mechanic is coming. Regardless, the shop's customer service is amazing! Glad, I found a quality shop! read more

I came at 8:10am and there was no line for state inspection. I've come into the gas station a couple times and never noticed the inside seating area. There is a TV, microwave, phone charging station, free coffee, magazines, and free WiFi. The inspector, Mohammed, was done within 40 mins (I only had to fix my headlight which has been a problem with my Infiniti). He was very nice and mentioned watching one of my tires since it was low on air, but no nail. Will definitely be back! Thank you to the other reviewers that led me to this location! I waited til the last day of the month to get an inspection. It was a busy month, okay?? I was worried about how long I'd have to wait. It was around 3:20 on a Friday. I only had to wait for one car to get inspected before I got to go! About 15 minutes. Here I was trying to think of how I could wait til the first and drive a sneaky back way to get inspected without getting caught. The staff was friendly and the service was easy. The station is connected to a shopping center with a post office and Trader Joe's, so it's a convenient place to get a lot of things done. Poor communication, unclear instructions, no one able to clarify what "repair other lights" meant, ignored my request to place a grill cover, and when I asked about why it had not been addressed as I had requested on their drop off form, I just received shrugs. NOT DEAF FRIENDLY. Needed three services: oil changes and two inspections. I called to make appointment and I was told the inspections are first come, first served so I am better off making appointment in the morning. As I drove in my 9am appt, I see the closed sign for inspection (btw, it closed only A HOUR after its opening time). I see on my left is three garage door for individual service. Oil change already had a car in the garage. I was prepared to wait, parked the car, and came in the store.  Look like I came across the same rude person that everyone was posting review about. The guy at the "front desk" wasn't really accommodating. He seems more focused on himself, answered yes, ok to non-yes/no question.  I felt nervous that he will explode in annoyance/anger if I asked another question or clarification. He didn't really give me clear answer on the time, instead I gave them benefit of the doubt and waited 10 minutes. Still nothing so I left. The guy at the "front desk" didn't stop me, apologized for the waiting nor gave me additional information.  Would not recommend unless you are prepared to deal with the listed detail. read more

I went for a vehicle inspection on Saturday, July 9 at 8 AM and was greeted with a sign that said inspector will be back on Tuesday, July 12. I return on July 12 about 12:15 PM. Four cars in front of me. I wait until 1:30 PM When I am next and pull up to the bay. The inspector was dealing with the last guy on line during the inspection in front of me. He told that guy to pull his car up next to the bay as he finished with the customer in front of me. When the bay was clear I pulled in front of the bay as the sign directed. The inspector is talking to the last guy on line and sees me and come to my window and asks me if I will wait another 30 minutes so he can have lunch. Had there been a sign out saying that there will be no inspections between 1:30 PM and 2 PM, I could have made a decision to wait or come back later. Really poor customer service and time management on the inspector's part. read more

I would give a zero star if I could, the service at this station, is complete crap. I went in to get my car inspected, my car failed, yes some of it was true, my front window tint was past the line and needed to by cut back or removed, no big deal, there was a crack in a fog lens- first he said cover it where he can't see it, I did that, but that's not true, truth is they need to be repaired or removed, so I removed as I wait for the new ones to come, and there was a bad left spring, that was a must replace so I replaced both, but he also said the right tie rod was bad and had play in it.. I didn't have this guy do the work because I have an amazing mechanic in the family, so I don't have to pay for labor. Thank god I have someone I can trust. Not 1 time but this man failed my car 4 times for the same right side tie rod said had play in it.. Once I questioned him after the second re-inspection this man was never going to pass my car, each time I went back, he added more stuff, new to the area, I didn't know Virginia rules, but as it just so happens, I have owned a tow truck service and been lucky enough to have been married to a mechanic for 28 years who is also an inspector but just in a different state. So after a failing car on Friday 5/31/19 where he added my back window tint needed to be where you can see the break light and once again the same tie rod on the right-the one with play in it I was once again completely angry, and I went home and butchered my window tint because at this point I no longer cared what it took to get this car to pass. However I returned the following Monday.... you guessed it, FAIL, I have already paid the man for two inspections and was going to keep handing him $16.00 every time because he said he wasn't going to charge me as a favor to me, no thank you I never wanted or want a favor from him. After I failed I lost my cool on this crook!!!! And was yelling the question "what part needs to be replaced now, because the tie rod end has been replace twice now, even after my mechanic said the original wasn't even bad. I then chose to call the trooper in charge, most people don't know that there will be a state trooper that is in charge of each and every inspection station. I called and spoke to a wonderful woman that is in charge of the troopers, she said take it to another shop so I did ... on Tuesday OH MY MY MY A NICE BIG PASS!!!! And at that point, I called and set up a meeting with the trooper in charge of this shop. Myself and the trooper met at another shop and he and another inspector went over my car again... and BOOM, another PASS!!! So I go home knowing I am not crazy and I know my car and I know I can still trust my mechanic, and the Mercedes mechanic of 40 plus years.... but this inspector who was very proud of his 1 year of service at this shop. NOT SO MUCH!! So just a few things I learned during this headache. #1. Never go to NewGate #2. If you believe that your inspector is lying to you about your repairs, BEFORE you remove any parts you can have the trooper of that station come out and look at your car and tell you what needs to be done. #3. The first time you have the gut feeling you are being hosed, listen to your gut and get out. Save your self from a lot of wasted time and headaches. #4. I have learned, when I have been pushed to far for about 5 weeks, there is no coming back, and I need to show this inspector just how stupid I'm not. Getting trooper involved was step one, and my complaint on yelp was step two, and i believe I have a few my steps in my bag, to make sure he understands, women aren't stupid, but once provoked they are a force to be reckoned with. Stay smart ladies!! Listen to your gut.. he may have cost me a lot of money, Redo on window tint that didn't need to be butchered. And on parts my car didn't need. And many hours lost from work/ and just my time in general, and all the frustration and stress. But at the end of the day, I am in a much better place than he right now and from me it's just not over. I have a couple more reviews and then better business bureau. 1 bad spring--- was bad. Replaced both Front window pulled window tint off, took fog lamps off as I wait for new. Tie rod replaced twice and truth nothing wrong with the original, and butchered rear window tint ... soon to be re-tinted. I passed, and Trooper G knows what I went through. Like Rick James... These guys do a great job here. my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan overheated on me 2 days ago on our way home so I pulled in. Even though it was 6 p.m. and they close at 5, the mechanic looked under the hood and told me what the problem was. I left the car there for them to fix it the next day. They are straight forward, no making up prices as they go along and no making up new problems either. The mechanics that work there were extremely nice and helpful, called me multiple times giving me updates. It cost a lot but doesn't it always. I am very thankful to the guys that work here. I moved here on my own a year ago and went from having and on site car mechanic (my dad) to living 800 miles away from him. My biggest concern was finding a place that was honest, fair, and convenient! I found it first try! I have dropped my car off and walked home countless times and had my car ready to go with in an hour. I never feel like I am being cheated and never have had a problem with any of the work they have done... Example... I recently hit 20k mile and was SURE I needed my brakes done. They looked at them and instead of just taking the money told me I would be perfectly fine waiting and they would check again at my next oil change.... That kind of honesty is hard to find! Communication is key when working with any type of business, read what you are signing, common sense also plays a factor. That being said my experience with the team at Newgate has been very fair, they explain available options, what can be done, and how much it will cost. So I came here to get a quote on my tire. They priced match with what I had. Actually saved me a lot of money getting all 4 tires replaced here. The ordering process took awhile. The original guy who helped me forgot to put the order in but once they did get the order in I waited about 10 days. Then installation was reasonable as well. Your really just paying for the tires. Once I compare the cost to even a Costco I was saving well over $200 coming here. They were a great help and answered all the questions I needed help with. read more

We'd been using another repair shop in the area, before a friend recommended Sunoco. They beat the other shop's estimate for repairs on one of our vehicles by hundreds of dollars. Since then, we have been regulars. Jason, the manager, is great. He is professional, helpful and an overall nice guy. Kellen, the mechanic, is THE MAN! He knows cars, especially Hondas, inside and out (he used to work at a Honda dealership). He is fair and honest, and he truly cares about doing the right thing. If it doesn't need to be repaired, he won't tell you it does. You can trust these guys, which we have found to be a rare occurrence when dealing with car repairs. I have gone here for years. Jason used to manage the place and he and his team were honest and great. I went recently and found out Jason is no longer there. I asked for an oil change. A day later they said my car needed breaks and they found a hole in the exhaust and all told wanted to charge me $700. I said NO!!! I wanted an oil change. What i received was dishonesty. I got the car home and they had disconnected the heat shield over the muffler and never connected it back so it would rattle. I will NEVER go back. Stay away from a company that is dishonest and creates problems that they then want you to pay them to fix. read more

This is the third time I've been to this Sunoco, and every time's been just fine. The first two were for the emissions test and then my state inspection. The third, I was expecting to just need my brake pads replaced, but John called me to let me know that upon a test drive, the front end was really loud, and upon inspection, the wheel bearings were extremely worn and needed to be replaced. John explained what the bearings did and how they worked with the rest of the mechanism between the wheel and axle. It wasn't an inexpensive fix, so I was nervous. Seeing the online reviews here wasn't encouraging, but in talking to a few friends, I got a fair quote on it. I got my car back the same day, and the front wheels have never been quieter. After asking around to several friends about a car garage that I could trust, I started taking my vehicles to Newgate Sunoco a few years ago. And, I have not regretted it once! Seriously, I'm convinced that Don is an engine whisperer with -centuries- of experience and knowledge. Kellen is all about ensuring the highest quality of work is performed and has no issues with ensuring third party participants stayed on top of their game. As an example of their trustworthiness, I have an older vehicle that is barely hanging on - instead of nickel and diming me for every possible thing that's wrong with it, they explained to me that it was at a point where it wasn't worth my money. They told my son to drive it gently until it finally just stops. Who does that? In addition to feeling the team's honesty, I have never been made to feel that my 'lady brain' couldn't comprehend information from their world (*grin*) - Jason is always amazing at breaking the information down in a way that doesn't make me feel ignorant or overwhelmed. Even the station owner seems to be engaged with customers... I've contacted him in the past and he was very responsive - called me back within an hour, he had no idea that I was calling to share my appreciation. And, the individuals that manage the cash register are also very nice. I've never had a poor experience here. I don't need to be treated poorly due to my gender and his inability to explain where my car should be parked. I had a flat tire asked them to change it for me and they attempted but could not remove the lock on the wheel but assisted me with getting my car to the dealership. I asked them about my wife's car that failed inspection at Virginia Tire and Auto also I took to several other places. Each place charged me approximately $800 to fix the problem. I gave up but when I asked the gentleman here he suggested I bring the car in for them to check out. So I did and they found a lose wire and corrected it by reconnecting the wire. They could have been dishonest like the other places but they weren't. They were honest and I appreciate them for suggesting me to bring the car in and going the extra mile to help me with both cars. This Sunoco has a free air compressor, and I had a good impression on them in the beginning. One day, I went there to get my emissions inspection and tried to fix one of the flat tire. The technician said he will try to fix the tire, but he was not sure. I told him to check the price for the tire, however, he started fixing the tire. After I got back home, I heard the hiss noise from the tire, so I went back. The shop manager firmly said I am eligible to get another repair or refund since the hand-written receipt said "Not Guaranteed..." I was like WHAT??? What happend was that the technician did not say anything about this no guarantee repair before and after he attempted to fix the tire. He did not even show me what he wrote on the receipt. They even charged $18 which is way more than those shops in nearby repair stations. I am very disappointed about their apparent rip-off. read more
