I enjoy attending the sacrament of reconciliation here as well as the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (conducted in Latin). My humble membership in the Latin choir here had not only deepened my understanding of the Roman liturgy (both Extraordinary and Ordinary forms) but it also has improved my knowledge of the Latin language, improved my chanting and polyphonic execution, and improved my reading ability way past the level of reading I was at back in college as a member of a scholastic choir. Since music reading (a.k.a sight reading) is just like any other kind of reading in the fact that proficiency and mastery is a direct proportion of how often you practice, participation here and at the monthly First Friday and First Saturday liturgies has truly improved my poor skills. The wonderful people here have truly made an impact in my life. Music liturgy aside, this is a fairly nice parish that's welcoming and steeped in history. Current pastor, Fr Steve Nguyen is a young, straight forward priest who is pastoral, kind and well steeped in theology. His homilies are hard hitting and based on bedrock truths... they force me off my "complacencies", away from my selfish tendencies, and towards greater actions of love and service to others (note: Christ also taught that complacency and comfort is not the path to heaven) Highly recommend a visit here if you're in the area and looking for a Peaceful place to worship our loving Lord and true God. But, it makes me so sad to see such a beautiful gothic church only to walk in and see giant tv screens on the back wall like it's some kind of conference room. It also breaks my heart to see a choir loft with no choir, and a beautiful organ with no one to play it. Then on top of that, the music is recordings of a piano playing sappy 60s songs and butchering the ancient hymns of our faith. This beautiful parish has so much potential and it would make me so happy to see it flourish with a full choir and an organist and a more reverent liturgy with incense. I will be praying for a restoration of this parish and the diocese.

The only downfall causing me to give it four rather than five star rating is the music ministry is very substandard and is screaming for help and more importantly, new leadership. A brand new state-of-the-art Allen organ, an organ the could mimic a very large pipe organ, was installed in the choir loft about 15 years ago when the church had undergone a major renovation. Very sadly, there has never been a COMPETENT (emphasis strongly added) ORGANIST to play it on a regular basis for Sunday mass. There some that have come to play it sporadically (far from consistently), however they are very overwhelmed and are unsure how to play it. To the best of my knowledge the organ is been sitting idle collecting dust. To its credit, Sacred Heart Parish is not alone in the Roman Catholic Dioces of Honolulu, when compared with other Catholic Dioceses across the US mainland and abroad, the diocese Honolulu has done a very paltry job (if any at all) at taking care of organs, pipe organs, and organists in general and that stems from the leadership at the top. St. Patrick Church - in Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawaii - was the chosen site to Bless the ashes of my cousin, Robin, because she had attended the attached Elementary School and had gone to mass here with her parents and siblings. It was the best setting because St. Patrick Church is the home parish for my cousin's family. The free parking lot, historical architecture - including grand archways colorful stained glass windows, excellent acoustics (the soloist: Robin's younger sister, the readers: Robin's mom and elder sister, the pianist, and the harpist sounded heavenly), and solid marble foundation - were much appreciated! There was no air conditioning. I sat near the open doors at the back of the church. The cool April morning breeze was sufficient. I saw electric fans along the walls which are probably used in the summer. The restrooms were outside and to the left. I didn't use the facilities and didn't hear of any complaints. Father Clyde presided over the Prayer Service. He was efficient and personable. He had listened to Robin's husband's eulogy and made appropriate comments about the sweet, young couples' partnership in his Homily! I had met Father when he signed the Guest Book. He welcomed us (there were four of us at the Reception Table) and kindly asked if we needed anything. Outside, on the covered walkway, a table was set up for each guest to take a bento lunch home. The tradewinds were gentle and the sunshine was warm. It was a beautiful day at a wonderful place which held many memories for my cousin, her classmates, coworkers, friends, and family!

We sat on the pews which faced the altar. The baptism had a candle lighting that was done by the god mother of my nephew. The father read from his handbook about for the spiritual message and process. Some people were hot because there were not enough windows inside so air can come nor any electric fans. People had to use a manual fan. Anyways, Samoa church choir sang in English. I thought there was a certain dress code that people needed to follow. Some people wore jeans and slippers. Overall, there were nice stained glasses.

Parking is easy in the front or back lot and while Unity Windward is on the third floor of an office building called the Atrium, it is well marked on a corner street. It can reached by elevator, plus there is a ramp on the front of the building in case you are physically challenged. They offer classes, book studies, a 12-step program and even have a "Blessed and Blessed Again" area to donate and pick up fun things for a lover offering too. Pretty neat jewelry on occasion there:) A lovely experience over all. It would be great to see more young people and kids there. They do have a Sunday teacher each week and an area for kids to participate in separate from where people gather for the morning message. And finally, if you can't make the 10am, try the beach service! 7am on the second Sunday of every month at Kalama Beach in Kailua. Since it was our first time we were given beautiful prayer beads. While we waited for service to begin, a few members approached us with heartfelt greetings. "Not too much, not too little, but just right." Children's artistic drawings of the Easter story were posted around the sanctuary. "Well done good and faithful servants. Well done." May God continue pouring blessings on your congregation, students and visitors that unifies us all in God's spirit. Mahalo
