Not shaved lamb like a real Greek eatery would do. 3 big gobs of flavorless lamb with gristle.. and NO dill yogurt sauce! Just had lunch here. I did read the reviews before I left my desk so I knew what to expect (which wasn't much) but I sure didn't expect to have to clean my own table. All six or so tables were filthy! I probably shouldn't have stayed but I only have 30 minutes for lunch so I decided to make the most of it. I've been trying to low-carb so I ordered the Greek Salad with Grilled Chicken. I got it with feta cheese and she asked if I wanted grilled onions and peppers too which I did. $10.17 was the steep total for what I found to be a small salad. The girl at the counter was nice, professional, but there were three old guys behind her that were creepy and unkept. Not sure what their purpose was but halfway through my meal they sat behind me and were loud and annoying. After waiting 10 or so minutes my salad was up on the counter. It came with Greek dressing, soft pita and utensils. While the salad was actually tasty it was a bit difficult to eat as they layered everything in a small container. I ate the top half with the chicken, peppers & onions and cheese and ended up throwing away the rest. Like others have said I'm surprised they're in business as the staff doesn't seem to care about cleaning the establishment. I can't believe I spent more than $10! Ok this place has been around forever and the old owner was great, a real neighborhood fixture. His subs were always incredible and the pizza was great. It's been taken over by a new owner but the place is every bit as good. It's the classic Greek style, pan cooked pizza and the staff was very friendly and took real pride inter work, down to the cleaning of the place and knowledge of their food. Taste like elios frozen pizza, I can't believe this place is still in business. You can tell that ownership doesn't care, everything in this place is dirty. Windows, seats, floor, even the employees look tattered. I love how every drink is $1.25 even the 12 oz cans that cost 15 cents and the fact that you can't even order drinks over the counter, it's from a vending machine. Been stopping by this place every now and then for years because I want to love it so bad, but at this point ... usually underwhelming, in particular their standard pizza (crust reminds you of frozen). Wins points for location, convenience, and ambiance but a lotta people I know just don't favor their style of pie. When the line at Los Amigos was too long the other day, went in for a meatball sub to-go with peppers, onions, black olives - nobody else but me and two guys behind the counter. Turned out to include none of the toppings, just two average-size meatballs for the entire $8+ large sub, each split in half and lined up across the roll with sauce and cheese. Obviously life goes on, just feels like lethargic cafeteria food and a missed opportunity for a great storefront. I do admire simple, utility slices and subs, no big expectations, but this aint it, too many better options in Newton. This is by far and away my favorite pizza place. I consider myself a pizza expert having tried a lot of slices from a lot of different places for a number of years. This place is not fancy or full of frills but what it will give you is the best damn pizza in Boston. Case and point: my wife and went to the Boston Pizza Festival where a number of vendors setup shop to try their slices. While we were there we didn't find any pizza that was that great. I want my money back! Today I ordered a chicken cutlet sub with buffalo, ranch, jalopenos, lettuce, and tomatoes. On the menu, chicken cutlet subs are listed as $5.00-$5.50 whatever that means. I expected to pay maybe $7 with tax for the large, and I was not told that anything I had added would cost extra. When I got there, the total was $9.10! Apparently dressing and jalopenos are an extra $0.50 each. Well, I was upset for having not been warned about extra charges, but I bought it anyway. Then I tasted it.... DISGUSTING! The chicken was soggy and processed. It looked and tasted like McDonald chicken nuggets before they started selling all real chicken... And the breeding was bland and soggy. Not to mention the fact that the sub was falling apart. I had to throw it away - it made me nauseous. Instead of naming everything you should not order, I will just name what are the favorites out of the local residents. pizza (small/large) - These are usually quite good to eat when warm. a true nice slice of pizza. FYI do not let sit and get cold because it tastes pretty bad. basically these things have the same eating period as a Duncan Donuts donut. After 2 hours, do not touch! Subs - These are mixed reviews. Personally I seem to get a stomach ache after I eat them sometimes. Many like them, many don't. Salad - surprisingly not terrible. But, small size. Drinks - I believe the price for each drink is $1.25 for a can and $1.75 for a bottle. A little on the steep side. countered by the low cost of pizza. (also free water in mass) Do not buy anything I did not mention here. Many of those foods are just not very good. If i mentioned it, it will be a good idea to try. FYI never get individual slices of pizza. They are bound to be cold and gross. Just avoid. atmosphere - actually not to bad, a good view of the Newtonville area. FYI high schoolers are around because that is one of the closest places to eat. though, the high schoolers are generally very nice. If you arrive late at night i.e. past 6, they sometimes have a T.V. on. Also during the summer months the door is open, so the temp is the same as the outside, luckily no flies get in because of a fan. The owner is also very nice by supporting a local baseball team. He even gives out free slices of pizza if they win! (by slices I mean whole pizzas, not the type that have been sitting out). Its a Greek family that runs the place and times are tough so its better to pump some money into some local businesses than into dominos or papa Johns. I am going against the grain here and saying that Newtonville Pizza isn't really that good. After reading the positive reviews I gave it a try and was disappointed. I can honestly say that I am not a big fan of Greek pizza, the crust just doesn't appeal to me. But beyond that, the ingredients just didn't seem of quality, particularly the cheese. I had green peppers and onions for toppings, and neither were cooked sufficiently, so it ended up tasting too much of onion. Newtonville Pizza is a typical pizza joint. I used to come here a lot when I was in high school and get either a few slices or a steak and cheese combo. The pizza is pretty damn good and its more of a Greek style than an Italian, very good dough and crust too. The steak bombs are pretty tasty, juicy and full of peppers and onions if you want 'em. One thing i would change is that they melt the cheese on the bread and not on steak while it is still on the grill. Also they have ham+egg, pepperoni+egg, bacon+egg grinders that are bomb, come with cheese and are a good fix if you are looking for dinner or lunch that is composed of breakfast food. I think that Newton North High School must keep this place in business because the kids there have nowhere else to go. There are many other choices in Newton for pizza. I've been going there for 15 years. It's that kind of pizza place you tolerate at 1am when all of the other places are closed. But they aren't open at 1am. They've helped me not eat pizza much when I'm in my own neighborhood. Pros: conveniently located. run-of-the-mill pizza if you like uninteresting pizza. Acceptable meatball sub. I don't remember what I thought of anything else I tried there and maybe that means something. Cons: run-of-the-mill pizza. uninterested staff. As a Newton local, I've been eating from Newtonville Pizza for years. It's family-owned and the food quality is about what you'd expect from such a small place. My biggest gripe about Newtonville Pizza is that the drinks come from machines which are, in all honestly, overpriced. The fact that they don't serve fries or rings is also strange, but I come to Newtonville Pizza for the entrees, not the sides. It is also unfortunate that they do not deliver, but that's understandable given their scale. All that being said, I've never had any bad experiences in the years that I've eaten here. The food isn't gourmet, but it's always tasty. I've ordered subs, pasta pizza, gyros, and sandwiches. Never have I left hungry or dissatisfied. Did you know they also serve omelettes? One of the things I love the most about this place is they are amenable to custom orders (within reason, of course), which a lot of places will refuse or outright overlook. If you're a snob expecting L'Espalier, then move on. It's the kind of corner restaurant that gives you what you see. The portion sizes are generous and it's less expensive than most of the restaurants in Newtonville that will run you closer to $15-20 for an individual meal. So, my coworkers and I were looking forward to Taco Bell... but when we got there... it was GONE! In our distress, we turned around and saw this place across the street and said "meh, let's try it"... we probably should have looked around more. My coworkers both got slices of cheese pizza. Sitting across the table, I could see that the cheese was of low quality... baked into a film on top of sauce that was squeezing out of where the cheese had come off the slice. The crust was an odd texture and while looking at it, it dawned on me... this is what they served in my high school cafeteria! One of my coworkers mentioned Elio's Pizza as well... I waited 15 minutes for my "grilled chicken gyro." The man wrapped it up nicely and told me that it took so long because he had to make more of "this" *holding up a container of gloop. I then realized he was calling this tzatziki sauce. On unwrapping my gyro, I found tomatoes - which I specifically asked to NOT get, shredded iceberg lettuce in mass quantity, bland, dry chicken breast, and VERY strong YELLOW onions. The pita seemed oily, almost as if it had been fried in some way, and the tzatziki sauce was everywhere. While eating it I noticed a spiciness, from the tzatziki that I couldn't place. Eventually, I figured out that it was so GARLICKY (not a usual ingredient in tzatziki... still trying to figure this one out) that it was spicy. An hour later I still don't want to say "hello" to anyone for fear of knocking them out with my breath. The chicken was dry, there was way too much lettuce, and the tzatziki was just overpowering. Not sure where all these positive reviewers got their pizza from... but I don't think it was here. As for the disposition of the owners/people running the joint, they seemed nice but I couldn't understand them and they only take cash... who uses cash!? The guy behind the counter has been there equally as long and they continue to serve the same pizza on the same giant menu board which in itself makes it kind of a tradition.
