This place gets five stars from me. Hands down five stars for Blacksburg, but I dare say five stars anyway. Coffee is the best in town, and they also have a wide variety of interesting tea and coffee drinks. For example, the lavender milk tea is delicious, a chai-like drink made I think from a bubble tea base (therefore be warned it is *sweet*). They were able to make mine dairy free with soymilk. Baked goods are phenomenal. I especially like the little chocolate cookies. Just the right small tasty morsel to accompany my afternoon coffee. Breakfast sandwiches are satisfying on a bagel of your choice, and lunch is tasty too. For everything there are LOTS of options classic and non-traditional with an Asian flare. I stopped by here for an afternoon snack. It's been a few years since I last went here and last time I wasn't super impressed so I wanted to give it another shot. I got a taro bubble tea and once again I was disappointed in the bubble tea. It tasted mostly like milk with a light hint of taro... Not as good as the other options in town. Next Door Bake Shop is my favorite coffee shop in Blacksburg. They are FRIENDLY and QUICK (both very important for me when stopping for coffee). This is also my favorite place for a casual lunch. All of the sandwiches are delicious and the Thai curry soups are always refreshing. To-go Thai ice tea on whim is also a good reason to come this place. I feel inspired to review this place because a Starbucks may be coming in the same shopping center. Anyone who has been here will prefer it over Starbucks, but a lot of folks I talk to do not know about Next Door Bake Shop and might stop into Starbucks just because of the brand recognition. Great place to go and get some unique baked goods like the "Tomato Pie" and their espresso drinks are some of the best. Nice people too.

Not a huge fan...seems like the type of place that opts for the cheap decor, ingredients, machinary, etc. Overpriced for the quality. Kitchen is mostly all out in the open which makes me uncomfortable for sanitary reasons. I've been here 3 times and each time I wonder why I picked this place. I got the veggie melt and a white mocha for a Sunday brunch. There's 3 other items on the vegetarian menu. My friend got the Thai medley and she enjoyed hers too. The first time I went to this shop, I really enjoyed my visit. I was warmly welcomed by the workers there and enjoyed the overall atmosphere. Their pasteries are pretty good, especially if you go when they are more freshly made. One advice I would give is their bubble in their boba tea. I've heard from most of my friends that their boba is decent but that the bubbles tend to stick together. In my experience when I ordered the taro boba, the bubbles tasted like butt. First time trying this place out this morning was not a good experience. I ordered a bagel toasted with butter and a smoothie. I was told my wait would be 10 minutes, I then waited for 30 minutes and my bagel wasn't even toasted. Favorite spot in Blacksburg! Great atmosphere to meet with friends or get work done (my main study spot). Staff is always welcoming and friendly, no matter how long my drink order is. As soon as you walk into the door of this shop, you can smell how delicious your meal is going to be. The coffee is always fresh, the drinks are good, and the food is mouthwatering. I really had my hopes up for this place after reading all the great reviews. I went there today to try it out during Blacksburg Restaurant Week and left disappointed. I feel like it could have been better if a little bit more attention went into the food by the people who are making it. The concept is there, but the execution is lacking. I ordered the Asian Fusion panini, with no onions, and pretzels on the side. I got the Thai Iced Tea on the recommendation of the nice cashier and a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie. The tea is pretty good, although really sweet from the flavored syrup and very creamy. The sandwich was ok, but could have been really good if a little more attention went into it. I asked for no onions, the girl behind the counter even called it out with no onions, but it still had onions on it. The sesame dijon dressing was really good, but there was hardly any on the sandwich at all. The sandwich was mostly bread, which was tasty, and a very small layer each of turkey, bean sprouts, lettuce and one tomato, and onions. Again, the sandwich was ok, but I know it would have been so much better if it wasn't all bread and had some more of the dressing on it. Unfortunately, the pretzels I was served were very stale, so I didn't eat them. The cookie I bought was yummy. I would like to try this place again, but after spending $14 on tea, cookie, a sandwich that left a lot to be desired, and stale pretzels, I'm not sure I'm willing to spend more money there! read more

Guys, this is a COFFEE SHOP and CAFE, not a restaurant. They make little sandwiches and pastries. If you want attentive sit-down service, go to a place that has a wait staff, not baristas. As far as coffee shops go in Blacksburg, this is by far my favorite. The other downtown/non-chain coffee shops in town have no idea how to make espresso drinks or roast coffee (not a good sign when your effort to roast beans makes the surrounding three blocks smell like burning toast... *cough cough* rhymes with Fill Fountain) but these guys are consistently good. maybe not the best you've ever had, but consistently better than everyone else in town. No, they're not particularly fast, because they make everything to order by hand and they run a tight ship with a small and friendly group of employees who actually remember you. That's very uncommon in a college town, when the food service industry is a gale force wind driven revolving door. Lots of sunshine, no dirtbag locals smoking cigarettes and glaring at you from the front bench, and a variety of seating options from tasteful living room chairs to traditional restaurant tables. If you're trying to get some work done while getting caffeinated in pubic, this is absolutely the place to do it. read more

This place could be so much better. I've been to Next Door around 10-15 times and each time they've managed to screw up my order in some way. I don't go here anymore. Try Bollo's or Mill Mountain.
