Well, we were curious since the internet seemed deeply divided about this place, and we were in the neighbourhood and felt brave. I had the beef pho with everything (very average, but totally fine), my husband had the beef stew with bread (the broth was good, some of the beef was soft and broken down, others were so chewy and tough he couldn't swallow it after really trying, lol). We shared the spring rolls (2 very large ones for $12, very crispy, filling and not greasy). I have a sensitive stomach and I had no issues. So, the food was ok. Nothing exceptional, but I've definitely had much worse. But wow. The place is... something else. It's quite run down, and full of many tchotchkes, streamers, electronics, blinking lights, extension cords, lights, etc, I wouldn't be surprised if the place goes up in a bonfire one night! Seriously, the haphazard use of extension cords of questionable quality all along the walls and ceiling was mind blowing. We went on a slow Saturday morning between Xmas and NYE, as they were setting up for someone's 15th anniversary party that night. The entire place was festooned with balloons, streamers, and blinking lights, blinged out not just for the holidays (a blinking shooting star with a massive tail of blinking lights, and a blinking Christmas tree) but for the celebration that night as well. We also noted strobe lights, a disco ball, lots of cameras and what is clearly a karaoke stage, screen, and a dance floor. They must do a lot of private parties here, despite how run down it is, the aged and cluttered space, and the slightly weird smell permeating the place. Anyway, the food is fine. Nothing exceptional but perfectly ok. So maybe as a take out or delivery, it should be ok. But I don't recommend a dine-in experience, unless you enjoy a lot of cluttered kitsch and blinking lights... read more

Drove by, and the band mi sandwich shop we wanted to go was closed. Saw this place across the street and thought to give it a try. The restaurant itself is like any old Asian restaurant with tacky decorations and a sticky floor. Probably not the best dining experience if you dine here. Order some of my favorite vietnamese dishes as well as their banh mi sandwiches to go. The food was edible, but I wouldn't recommend it. The sandwiches were the worst. They didn't come with the normal veggie garnishes. No cucumber slices, cilantro, or pickled veggies. Instead, it had shredded lettuce?? And their "shred pork" was basically chopped up pork ham (which, by the way, is not what a shredded pork banh mi sandwich is like.) They should have just called it a ham banh mi. Actually, they shouldn't even call it a banh mi, and just call it a sandwich. In all my 30+ years, I have never seen lettuce in a banh mi sandwiches. read more

Dumpy authentic Vietnamese place around Fraser and Broadway. Parking is available around Fraser as well as the side streets. The inside is dated. It looks like someone's living room from the 1980s. There is even a karaoke area with disco ball. My friend thought the entire place smelled like urine, but the strong odour is actually fish sauce and incense. Just a heads up. Staff are friendly. It looks like a mom and pop place. They have a set meal special (I assume it applies to both lunch and dinner) consisting of an entree with either a spring roll or Vietnamese coffee. The XL size is equivalent to a large from other places. The soup is a bit on the heavier side, and contains plenty of onions and green onions. Nice beef balls and slices of meat. Pretty decent taste. The spring rolls are Vietnamese style (rice paper). Beautiful. The basil leaves could've been a bit fresher, but it was no biggie. Bean sprouts were cooked. Wouldn't mind coming back. I found this place recently, and there's nothing fancy about it, but I feel like its quite authentic. I'm going to Vietnam this December and I'll be able to confirm that once I've been. For now, I just have a hunch its "real". The people that run it are good people. The portion of food I got was massive. It was a rice with chicken, and pork, and a fried egg (added that on). I passed by this place many times and wanted to see if this place is good after seeing Yelp reviews. So I got BBH(spicy beef noodle) for $7.49 and it was the cheapest Pho I ever paid than anywhere else. Taste wise it tasted sour according to what the waitress told me and I found it kind of sweet too. It also tasted like msg and not the kind of soup I usually like though. Staff seemed nice, but she never checked up on my table. I didn't find this place to be impressive. I'd rather pay more and eat somewhere else better than here. read more

Food: I got a small beef noodle. It was probably one of the worst noodles I have ever had. I did not even finish my bowl. The "rare" beef was so overdone and it tasted like smelly socks. Service: There was no service. She came to grab my order and disappeared. I had to look for her in order to pay for the bill. Nothing out of the ordinary for an Asian place. Atmosphere: The restaurant is not located in the greatest part of town but the inside is like most Viet places. The smell inside was the restaurant was the most off putting part of my experience here. The smell was that of a downtown east side skytrain station that stank of urine. It was so disgusting. I will never ever go to this restaurant . I got a meatball pho. The broth tasted alright but the meatballs were horrible. The texture of the meatballs were rubbery and didn't even taste like meat . The colour was a bit whiteish . Price was a bit cheaper than other pho places but oh boy talk about bad food . I also got a lemonade, it was delicious . That's the only thing I would recommend. Still my go to place near work for cheap, filling, and of course delicious bánh mì. I have only ever had their vegetable (tofu) bánh mì and it has been consistently delicious: crunchy carrots, onions, and tofu in a perfectly toasted "bun." The tofu was silky on the inside with just the right crunch on the outside while the other vegetables added that perfect crunch to the sandwich. Even if you're not vegetarian you'll want to try this. read more

Been meaning to try this place out and I'm finally here today! First time here and this place isn't exactly the most appealing from outside, but who cares. Because once you're inside the decor is beautiful with a sense of home. There are cute lanterns hung on the walls and they've got two TVs. A small asian lady greeted and seated me upon my arrival almost immediately. The place is empty but thats alright with me, its lunch time. My parents are Chinese but grew up in Vietnam during their childhood, so I pretty much grew up eating only Chinese and Vietnamese, or Chinese infused Vietnamese food (my mom is a mean cook!) and I was excited to see what was on their menu. I decided to order the shredded pork banh mi with the deep fried spring rolls, and a French filter coffee with condensed milk and ice. The food came rather quickly with some tea, though I think she misunderstood and thought I asked for the coffee to go, but thats alright. First few bites are yummy, the spring rolls especially delicious! I really like this place, and I hope it stays around for longer. I would love to see the place boomin and busy, and will tell all my friends about it. The server was sweet and super friendly and next time I come back, I'll try one of their pho bowls. Nha Trang is located next to the eastbound 99 B-line bus stop by Fraser and E. Broadway. It is a rather rundown neighborhood with a lot of boarded up shops. The sense of urban hip hasn't permeated over from either Commercial Drive, or Main Street. And that's why I like it. There is a hole-in-the-wall vibe, I'm a little afraid to pull out my Nexus S or iTouch. There are two tv's, one is running CNN, and the other SpongeBob. How much better does it get? Ah, the food, right. For $6.75, you can get one of the biggest, fullest bowls of Pho Dac Viet in Vancouver. The noodles seemed to go on forever. There was plenty of beef slices, tendos, tripe, and beefballs. Its funny that the cost of the beef noodle soup was roughly the cost of the huge sprig of basil at Choices or Capers. Its like you can get the basil, and the noodle soup thrown in too for the same price. For $6, I'm not looking for a culinary revelation. Instead I'm looking for a very filling, heart and belly warming soup of noodles and beef. Without too much msg or time spent waiting. Nha Trang delivers that in spades. Decor is tacky in the western sense. However, I noted that the paint job was well done, and the light fixtures looked quite new. I feel like this style was probably what an upscale resto would have looked like in Vietnam/Laos about ten years ago. So points for authenticity? Btw, the server was very friendly. This place is my new favourite in Vancouver! Food is very tasty and the portions are large. #41 & #39 are my favourite vermicelli dishes and the #10 & #11 are my favourite pho soups. #41 has grilled pork and the crispy deep fried spring roll that was so delicious I had to order an extra one. I had a chance to try the beef noodle soup with rare beef slices and that was very tasty also! Servers were also very sweet and helpful with deciding which dishes to try. It's kinda tough to gauge just on ice coffee alone but it's a dandy, stronger than most. plus it's clean, spacious, bright, and a few flat-screen tvs so it's not your typical hole in the wall. i know, surprising in this area. in fact, the decor is kinda interesting, split into 2 sides w/ a hip-high wall, in a colonial setting. I arrived and there was one family and one couple eating there. I ordered my meal and the other customers left. I ordered two spring rolls and a shredded pork sandwich. It was ok. Nobody came to my table to ask how I was doing. Another customer came in and I saw that they went to check up on him after he received his meal even though I came in before him. Nobody came to refill my water. Servers were avoiding eye contact with me. I had to wave someone over and one told the man working there I wanted the bill. That was not correct. I wanted my water and they would have known if they had bothered to ask. Anyways, when it came to the bill I left no tip. I rarely ever do that. Not coming back here for piss poor customer service like that. If you want good vietnamese food with good customer service, you can go to almost any other restaurant in Vancouver and the lower mainland and I'm sure you'd get better service than this place. read more

This place is my go-to Vietnamese restaurant in this neighbourhood. It's a popular place for my co-workers and is probably the only reason I tried it in the first place. From the East Broadway street view, I doubt I would have even tried it without the recommendations. It's not much to look at but they got the important thing right... the food is good and it's reasonably priced. The Pho has always been great. And if I don't feel like soup, the rice dishes or the vermicelli with grilled pork and/or chicken dishes hit the spot. The spring rolls and the Bánh mì is pretty good too. Oh yeah! I love this place for Pho. I come on a regular basis as I work very close and they never fail to disappoint! Pho tai with a side of raw beef that I can cook in the soup to my taste. The staff are friendly and remembered what I ordered after only being in there a few times. The decor is cheesy but it works. Reasonably priced, rich broth, fresh ingredients and great service. I will admit I am currently addicted to this place. As someone who normally enjoys cooking and cooks all my meals at home, the fact that I haven't cooked a meal at home in 5 days is entirely down to this place luring me in with delicious Vietnamese fare. The staff are hella friendly, the prices are awesome, and the food is tasty, fast and fresh. My current favourite item is the #49, chicken and pork with veggies and vermicelli, sometimes with salad or spring rolls on the side. The only reason I've deducted a point is because of the ridiculous amount of bird crap all over the outside of the restaurant. I am not a girl who is easily squicked out, but it's seriously gross. There's obviously some a-hole pigeon who likes to sit on top of their sign, enjoying the view of East Broadway, and crapping literally everywhere. I have never been to Veitnam, so I don't know what the true Pho tastes like, but I have tried many Pho restaurants in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. Pho is the best in Calgary perhaps there are better beef. Everybody knows the secret to good Pho are: a. Right taste soup served hot. Unfortunately, most Pho places cannot serve the soup hot enough to cook the raw beef. b. Fresh Basil leaves, fresh bean spout with red chilli pepper and lime. However most restaurants use Jalapeno slices and the like and lemon to substitute the real ingredients. c. Raw beef slice should be uniform, tender and have the sweet beef juicy taste. Next time you try other Pho places, see what you get. Ever since I moved from Calgary to this city four years ago, I tried many Pho places alone Broadway, Main Street, Chinatown and Richmond, I cannot find one better than Nha Trang and have always return to this place whenever I want a bowl of pho. Try the drip ice coffee, it is still done the traditional way. The restaurant do have its own drawbacks. Firstly, I don't like the pigeon dropping right outside the restaurant. Secondly, the restaurant always have a faint smell of leaky gas. Inside was quite dark and it is located in an area that a lot of people don't want to venture after 7:00pm. Perhaps because of these reasons, the restaurant is never full. The restaurant is family run, the service is not fancy but very welcoming. read more

The food has gone quickly downhill and the last straw was finding the place closed at a time their posted hours say they are open. No sign on the door, no explanation. Just not open. Ok so here is the deal...I have been going to this place on and off for the last 5 years. Thought the food was decent...two giant tv monitors are a bit annoying plus music pumping in the back ground...whatever typical restaurants these days. I went there last week, sat near the bar...the owner of the restaurant was training an employee to prepare food. At first I didn't know it was food actually, there were pink pasty thing in clear plastic bags. They were poking holes into the bags with kabob sticks. After my lunch I was paying my bill...I asked the employee what they were and what are they for? She told me that they were mechanically separated meat and they were bag so they can be steamed. That's right! Mechanically separated meat to be cooked in plastic bags! They poked holes to prevent them from exploding. FULL ON CANCER ALERT!!!! I told her that was not a safe way to prepare food. She replied back in a thick Chinese or korean accent..."I know, Vietnamese people don't care about cancer" what the heck? I'm Vietnamese and I care about cancer and so a lot of Vietnamese people out there. I think what she meant was THE Vietnamese owner doesn't care about this issue.
