Considering there are 2 Vietnamese restaurants out here in Market Crossing and I consider this one more enjoyable to go to says alot. The price is more affordable and the portions are bigger here compared to the other place. For me, I either order a large #14 (I consider this their "special pho" with everything) or I order #60 their rice plate with everything (pork, chicken, fried egg, shredded pork). I've also ordered the spring rolls and salad rolls, both come with 3 rolls. Taste is standard, but the price is hard to find nowadays. The seem to be quite busy near lunch time. The tables turnover so quickly that the workers barely have a chance to clear the table and sit you down before another set of people come in. Overall, I would recommend this place over the other nearby. This is the typical Vietnamese place with the classics. Also more bang for your buck. Parking is abundant here and they also accept credit cards. read more

I don't usually give all negative opinions and jump to conclusions first time trying any place. This was about our 8th at least but it's been regressing so much that we won't go back again.. Also I always try taking good pics regardless of how underwhelming foods maybe but it was very difficult because that's how they look no matter how hard I tried. (I'm sorry if anyone finds this offensive). Few months ago my "special beef pho" had 2 thin slices of beef in it. Last week I asked for just the broth coz I wasn't hungry and how much would they charge. The waiter said the same. I reconfirmed: "just the broth is the same as a regular bowl of pho?" He laughed and said in a condescending tone: "of course!" So I ordered a pork banh mi. I was surprised by the small amount of meat and mostly lettuce to fill the sub, no small piece of jalapeño and no pate. So you can guess the taste. read more

Not child/family friendly. The gentleman at the cash told us that if we aren't able to clean up after our young children, to not come back. I would of gladly done a better job if he had said something along the lines of, "I'm short staffed so if you don't mind helping me out.." that would be a more positive customer experience. If you don't want to bus the table then don't do eat in and don't ask for tip. Tl;dr: Would not recommend bringing your kids under 6 if you don't want to get yelled at by the staff. read more

Gold Train II Express is one of the no-nonsense eateries located in the Market Crossing area of Burnaby serving up hearty Vietnamese cuisine. As typical with many Vietnamese eateries, everything is very utilitarian here... meant to get people in and out as quickly as possible. Looking for a lighter meal, I decided to try their Vegetable and Wonton Yellow Noodle Soup and Vietnamese Spring Roll. I really like the frilly/wavy yellow egg noodles that they use here and I appreciate the crispness that they get in their spring rolls. I'm assuming they use a rice paper wrapper for their spring roll which gives it a much nicer crunch. I revisited to try their Bun Bo Hue ($10 for large) because I saw that you can substitute the rice vermicelli with the yellow egg noodles that I like so much here. The thing to know about this place is that the food and flavour is really in-your-face. It's unabashed and no-nonsense... and isn't that all we want? The other thing to know about this place is that it can get really busy (especially at lunch time). Due to this, the service here can suffer. Take, for example, my last visit where I ordered the Grilled Chicken with Spring Roll Vermicelli Bowl or Bun Ga Nuong, Cha Gio ($10.50). They wound up giving my lunch to someone else who came in and ordered at least 10 minutes after I ordered. So if you're looking for some no-nonsense Viet food and don't care about the service... Gold Train II Express is a viable option. read more

Decided to update as I now don't come here at all. The food has really gone downhill here, and my husband has gotten ill twice from it. Once from the pho and once from a chicken and rice dish. I was craving pho, and this place hit the spot. It was inexpensive, they had a large selection of dishes and flavors - almost to the point where I didn't know what to choose since there were so many options. The small is big enough for one person - I got the seafood pho with rice noodles. The broth was good, had a hint of garlic. The broth didn't have a ton of flavor (compared to a chicken based soup), but I appreciated that it was not over-salted and I could adjust the flavor with the oyster sauce & sriracha. There were 3 pieces of shrimp in there, 3 fish balls, and 2 pieces of imitation crab meat. I finished the whole bowl and was satisfied. This is a popular lunch spot - it was fairly empty when I got in at noon, and it was packed by 12:30 - 12:45 pm. The food comes super fast (within 5 minutes). This is cash only. No frills, no nonsense place, just fast and inexpensive. ($6.85 for a small pho) I'd come back here again. read more

I was pleasantly surprised. Pho is not near the too of my list for restaurants but was glad I tried this place. We split a large bowl of #3 (see attached pic of menu) , I ordered #73 and my wife #75. The soup was delicious especially with the addition of fresh basil and been sprouts. Service was very quick and prices more than reasonable, less than $35 including tip. Fast like a train, with smiles like gold. I was in a rush for a nearby meeting and was craving some Vietnamese. This newly opened place fit the bill. As soon as I walked in the owner was super welcoming with a smile. With what looks like his entire extended family bustling about, it was as mom and pop as could be. I ordered the spring roll with lemongrass chicken vermicelli noodle bowl combo. Everything was fresh and presented a tad better than most places. For $7.80 with tax I was a happy. Went here for lunch on a Friday. We got there at 1145 and it was busy but we didn't have to wait for a table. By 1200 it was packed. Service was average to what you would expect at this type of restaurant though we did have to flag down someone so we could order after about 10 minutes. Not great when you're on a lunch break. Food was good but again it took awhile to come out to us. I got a vermicelli bowl. It was presented nicely and the meat was nicely cooked. Spring roll was crispy and tasty. You can see why it's so busy there. Many other people in the Restaurant were eating pho. My coworker got it and liked it. Restaurant is cash only which kind of sucks if you don't usually carry any. Just like most of Vietnamese pho places, their serving is pretty big. I always order small beef with tendon noodle soup and some crunchy deep fried spring rolls - my Vietnamese guilty pleasure meal. I have driven by this place every week as I often take out from white spot and Pizza Hut in the same complex. I decided to finally try GT II and I will probably not go back again. I went with a friend and the place was fairly busy, maybe one-third full at an odd time of day. I thought being busy was a good sign. After ordering I googled and read the reviews and became a bit concerned. My summary is that the poor reviews are mostly accurate. Good : meat portion in pho is decent but meat quality not that great. Friendly server. Very attentive. Bad : no flavour in broth. Sweet tasting for some reason. Maybe too much msg. Lemon grass chicken was not dry but also not freshly cooked. Everything seemed microwaved and lacked punchiness. Wasn't super fresh but not too terrible. Also didn't get my order right which was not impressive at all, but I ate what I got anyways. Food temperature is warm. Not super hot. Because of warm temperature the raw bean sprout taste is overpowering and makes everything taste raw. Tea cup was dirty both inside and outside with dark thick stains from some sort of sauce. Lots of foot traffic going in to eat due to location and the price for all items is $9.50 to $11 so pricing is ok. But it is probably one of the worst pho places I have ever eaten at. Very Disappointed - this place used to be good until a couple weeks ago. A couple weeks ago my friend ordered grilled pork with rice and they over-grilled it to the point that the meat was black and dry. We went back today and ordered two phos. The portion of the bean sprouts was so small that it wasn't enough for one person, let alone two. Also, they gave us the sprouts' tips and ends; you'd think they gave us leftover sprouts from another table. This (Nov 06-16) update is more for the benefit of the regular staff (guy and gal). We are regulars but had that status challenged on our last visit. There were 2 guys working and everything was several notches below the regular crew which for that one visit dropped my rating to lousy from average. Place was dirty, server was grubby. The noodles in both dishes taste very stale and were not separated. There were white and yellow noodles and both were just clumps, It was like trying co chew through a rubber band ball. Had to ask for tea. So, jack it back up, I will give you another chance and another update. Here's my original review; Ok, so, 3 out of 5 means better than average but it really IS average. Nothing wrong with the place...extensive menu , service is quick and friendly, food is decent and prices are good for what you get. It is always concerning when you enter a restaurant at peak hours and it's empty...twice. Second they are cash only and have been for months which is one reason I have taken so long to come, I always forget to bring cash with me like so many people who use cards these days. BEWARE peanut allergy. I was very surprised to find peanuts at the bottom of the beef curry... Not only was it an unpleasant taste and texture combination but it could have been a deadly surprise as it is not advertised in the menu anywhere. There was also a lovely little hair on my dish which was a wonderful turn off and immediate plate pusher. The sauce otherwise had okay, but not depth of flavour and was rather watery. The saving grace was their stuffed appetizer sandwiches so they have that going for them. I would not go back.. There is much better out there. This place has the best pho saté (#24 soup) we always order this when we are in the area. The spice & lemongrass they put in this soup is extremely tasty. If you like spicy you have to try this soup. They are quick and efficient. Pricing is fair but downside is that it's cash only there. Otherwise I would of given this place 5 stars. Sucks for those who try this place out for the first time and don't realize it's cash only and they have to run across the way to the bank. I've seen this happen almost every time we are there. I'm not a huge fan of their vermicelli or rice dishes. To me their big hitter is their pho. I found a 1/2 bowl of yellow curry...everywhere else I order this it's a full bowl, this place is 1/2. All of the foods we ordered it was like they were running out of. This is usually our go-to for a bowl of Pho! Food is good but the service has always been mediocre. Tonight, we walked in around 6:30pm dinner time with two other tables inside. One of the tables was a worker who turned out to be the cook from the back having her dinner on the dining floor. One other waitress was on duty. They had a big order of take out as the waitress was in the middle of rushing our order through. She then left half way thru taking our order to tend to the take out person at the till, not too professional. We let it go. Out food order came with two eggs (one looked fine, the other yolk was green in color). We asked to have the green egg replaced and that was when things became heated. After a minor argument they reluctantly gave us two new eggs but not before talking out loud about us in the back. When we couldn't take enough of them talking about us, we told them we can hear them as the kitchen and the dinning area was only separated by a half curtain. They lied when confronted and said that they were talking about the eggs. There were comments made that we heard clearly which gave us good indication that their conversation was about us and not the eggs! Most awful experience on a dining floor. Also, the establishment wanted "Cash Only" and a phoney receipt which doesn't even come out from a register with a total. Very disappointed as we liked their food but unfortunately it isn't the only thing that brings us back. Feel terrible for the owner as the employees are ruining the owners business. read more
