Grilled pork Banh mi. Poor presentation. Lettuce fillers. Very little meat and pickled carrots.
    What I.

I don't usually give all negative opinions and jump to conclusions first time trying any place. This was about our 8th at least but it's been regressing so much that we won't go back again.. Also I always try taking good pics regardless of how underwhelming foods maybe but it was very difficult because that's how they look no matter how hard I tried. (I'm sorry if anyone finds this offensive). Few months ago my "special beef pho" had 2 thin slices of beef in it. Last week I asked for just the broth coz I wasn't hungry and how much would they charge. The waiter said the same. I reconfirmed: "just the broth is the same as a regular bowl of pho?" He laughed and said in a condescending tone: "of course!" So I ordered a pork banh mi. I was surprised by the small amount of meat and mostly lettuce to fill the sub, no small piece of jalapeño and no pate. So you can guess the taste.

Vegetable and Wonton Yellow Noodle Soup

Gold Train II Express is one of the no-nonsense eateries located in the Market Crossing area of Burnaby serving up hearty Vietnamese cuisine. As typical with many Vietnamese eateries, everything is very utilitarian here... meant to get people in and out as quickly as possible. Looking for a lighter meal, I decided to try their Vegetable and Wonton Yellow Noodle Soup and Vietnamese Spring Roll. I really like the frilly/wavy yellow egg noodles that they use here and I appreciate the crispness that they get in their spring rolls. I'm assuming they use a rice paper wrapper for their spring roll which gives it a much nicer crunch. I revisited to try their Bun Bo Hue ($10 for large) because I saw that you can substitute the rice vermicelli with the yellow egg noodles that I like so much here. The thing to know about this place is that the food and flavour is really in-your-face. It's unabashed and no-nonsense... and isn't that all we want? The other thing to know about this place is that it can get really busy (especially at lunch time). Due to this, the service here can suffer. Take, for example, my last visit where I ordered the Grilled Chicken with Spring Roll Vermicelli Bowl or Bun Ga Nuong, Cha Gio ($10.50). They wound up giving my lunch to someone else who came in and ordered at least 10 minutes after I ordered. So if you're looking for some no-nonsense Viet food and don't care about the service... Gold Train II Express is a viable option.

    Seafood noodle soup, small ($6.85)

I was craving pho, and this place hit the spot. It was inexpensive, they had a large selection of dishes and flavors - almost to the point where I didn't know what to choose since there were so many options. The small is big enough for one person - I got the seafood pho with rice noodles. The broth was good, had a hint of garlic. The broth didn't have a ton of flavor (compared to a chicken based soup), but I appreciated that it was not over-salted and I could adjust the flavor with the oyster sauce & sriracha. There were 3 pieces of shrimp in there, 3 fish balls, and 2 pieces of imitation crab meat. I finished the whole bowl and was satisfied. This is a popular lunch spot - it was fairly empty when I got in at noon, and it was packed by 12:30 - 12:45 pm. The food comes super fast (within 5 minutes). This is cash only. No frills, no nonsense place, just fast and inexpensive. ($6.85 for a small pho) I'd come back here again.

I was pleasantly surprised. Pho is not near the too of my list for restaurants but was glad I tried this place. We split a large bowl of #3 (see attached pic of menu) , I ordered #73 and my wife #75. The soup was delicious especially with the addition of fresh basil and been sprouts. Service was very quick and prices more than reasonable, less than $35 including tip. The decor is interesting (tacky :) ) and remember to bring cash, no credit cards or debit accepted.

Really lame vegetarian pho -- this is what my review is based on…read more I stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday after noticing they had a vegetarian pho ($14.50 for a small; $15.50 for a large). It does not come with tofu, so I added some (another $4!) to my small size. The pho came out in less than 10 minutes. The pho came with lots of veggies (lots of broccoli, plus cauliflower, carrot, celery, white onion and green onion), plus lots of rice noodles, and tofu. Of course, the broth is usually what makes or breaks a pho, and this was one of the most low-effort, lamest vegetable broths I've tried in Greater Vancouver (and I've tried over 90 pho places in the Metro area that have veggie pho options). In fact, I saw the woman fill up my pho bowl from the hot water dispenser. So, they don't even bother to have a proper veggie broth; they just base the broth on hot water, with maybe some salt and possibly some other spices? The broth tasted like barely salted water. Super lame. Embarrassing product to serve. The value is bad given the very lame quality. I like that they have a veggie pho option. The portion is big and you get lots of vegetables, though the lack of tofu is definitely a thumbs down given the already above average price for the pho. All in all, don't come here for veggie pho. 2 stars is very generous.

Since then though we've heard a few people say positive things about it so...we decided it was time to give it another try. Came here as a group of 5, and it was a last minute decision as we had originally planned to eat elsewhere but that place turned out to be closed on Sundays. With no reservation on a Sunday, we were asked to wait about 10 minutes. Not too bad of a wait, compared with another Vietnamese place that we'd driven by earlier which had a lineup out the door. A couple of people in our group had fried eggs on their dishes. The eggs looked good. Soft yolks and soft yolk is what I like to see. There was a Papaya salad that we shared amongst the table. This was OK for me. Wasn't thrilled with it. I ordered the Lemongrass Tofu on Vermicelli. I love that this restaurant gives the option of having it on Vermicelli. I'd been somewhere else earlier this year which also had Lemongrass Tofu but it was only served on rice, with no option of switching to Vermicelli. The Lemongrass flavor was strong. Very flavorful. Something in the dish though was quite spicy. It seemed a lot of other dishes on the table were also quite spicy. Hubby's Bun Bo Hue was extremely spicy but he still enjoyed the dish very much. My daughter and I both ordered the Sober Sunday drink which had Lychee, Kumquat and Lemon Juice. The drink was OK. Nothing to write home about. Our daughter just ordered the Tapioca Dumplings appetizer and then took bits and pieces from other people's orders. A spring roll and a couple pieces of Lemongrass Tofu from me, some beef and noodle from her dad...etc. The dumplings looked tasty. They looked like something I'd have ordered myself if I were still a meat eater. Overall, the food here is flavorful. It was a much better experience this time than the first time we came here. Personally though, I'd prefer them to tone down the spice or even eliminate the spice altogether. I don't like having to wipe my nose all the time because of having eaten something spicy, or having my lips burn.
