Charlap's has been an institution in my hometown for over 50 years. I don't even know how long it's been open, but it's been close to over half a century. I've been going here ever since I was a child. I went to school with the Charlap children. It was started by the Charlap family with their dairy farm with fresh milk that would be delivered by truck and glass bottles delivery back in the day, and they made their own ice cream which they served at their location in Boston, which has been the same but has expanded in size over the years to match the production needs. My friends used to deliver milk for this dairy in a truck like the good old days! When our baseball teams won in the town, we would go here for ice cream. They have soft serve and hard ice cream and sundaes and shakes and floats. Anything that an old ice cream shop would have- they even have ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cakes for sale these days which looked insanely good. There's probably 40 to 50 different flavors of ice cream. They are all made in house and incredible. There is a second location that opened in the village of Hamburg by the owner son, Nick, and it is a much smaller space. Charlaps is open in the winter with limited hours, it is very slow that time of year. However,, In the summer, there is barely parking. There's seating indoors and outdoors. I have watched this place evolved as I have spent most of my life in this town growing up and now visiting my family, who still lives in our Homestead. Well, this is going to be a problem, Nick Charlap's! Since the pandemic began, Nick Charlaps has been our favorite take out place. First, they sell chocolate. I know that was all I needed to hear but ... Secondly, THE ICE CREAM!! It is undeniably the best in WNY. The staff in the West Seneca location which we frequent (yes, frequent) is so helpful and friendly. They make no snarky comments that it's your second time in the store that week. Best Ice Cream in the Buffalo area??? Probably. I, being from Virginia, am not a Buffalo Ice Cream expert, but this ice cream is amazing. This place can go up against any ice cream establishment I've been to. I went with the traditional hard ice cream and not soft serve. I got the chocolate mudslide and caramel brownie overload. The chocolate was a taste explosion in my mouth. I wasn't going to get it until I saw it. Chocolate, chips, and fudge. Delicious. The taste was so positive that it might have muted the caramel. I'm big on caramel. But it might have been lost with that combo. Everyone around me was not only getting soft serve but they were getting it "dipped". It seemed to be very popular there. There need to be barriers of some sort because Boston State Road is a busy street and if someone goes off the road there then there will be many fatalities. It's totally off the beaten path for most people, unless they are driving along the 219 for some reason, but for locals...it cannot be beat. For non-locals, a sweet destination for sure! I used to visit a similar place when I lived in Virginia, and this is much the same: generous portions, a great bang for your buck. It was actually almost too much! I ordered a hot fudge sundae with the custard of the day (Tangerine) and it was a good size for me. Lee ordered the special sundae of the day, which was strawberry shortcake. Good Lord! It came in a banana split boat, with multiple scoops of ice cream, strawberries, strawberry sauce, and whipped cream. Even with my help, he couldn't finish it.
