Asked to replace the soft serve on the peanut butter sundae with hard ice cream and it was a measly 50 cents! The sundae was enough for two and just the right taste for a chocolate peanut butter lover. Real whipped cream too! Just a bit more than $8, but for two to share that was a good price.

Charlap's has been an institution in my hometown for over 50 years. I don't even know how long it's…read morebeen open, but it's been close to over half a century. I've been going here ever since I was a child. I went to school with the Charlap children. It was started by the Charlap family with their dairy farm with fresh milk that would be delivered by truck and glass bottles delivery back in the day, and they made their own ice cream which they served at their location in Boston, which has been the same but has expanded in size over the years to match the production needs. My friends used to deliver milk for this dairy in a truck like the good old days! When our baseball teams won in the town, we would go here for ice cream. They have soft serve and hard ice cream and sundaes and shakes and floats. Anything that an old ice cream shop would have- they even have ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cakes for sale these days which looked insanely good. There's probably 40 to 50 different flavors of ice cream. They are all made in house and incredible. There is a second location that opened in the village of Hamburg by the owner son, Nick, and it is a much smaller space. Charlaps is open in the winter with limited hours, it is very slow that time of year. However,, In the summer, there is barely parking. There's seating indoors and outdoors. I have watched this place evolved as I have spent most of my life in this town growing up and now visiting my family, who still lives in our Homestead. To me, this is some of the best fresh cream, milk, and ice cream on the planet! And you will never change my mind. Patronize this business it's incredible.

We tried the breakfast sandwich and it was great and different than most places with the sesame roll. We also tried the croissants and they had the best flavor and texture and better than any we have ever had. The best was the sour dough loaf that we took home for dinner and it was the first time there wasn't even a crumb left! It was hands down the best sour dough! They sure know what they are doing here and you need to try it!

I'd never before seen sourdough croissants or cheese danishes; there's an abundance of gorgeous loaves/boules for sale. (Cheese fondue supplies! Yes!!). A baker's rack to the right sells day-old bread at discounted prices (make your own croutons!) I opted for an almond (sourdough) croissant and a small coffee; I was asked if I wanted a mug or a to go cup? I was given a beautiful glazed mug - very charming! Two things worth mentioning: There's a small seating area downstairs, and five large tables upstairs. The stairs? A polite way of describing them is, "grandfathered-in". The rise/run makes it difficult to navigate if you're in thick boots, carrying a child, or have stiff knees. The pastry had a beautiful crunch. I enjoyed the almond flavor. And then I found: cherry preserves? I'm aware that "croissant et confiture" (eaten with jam) is a standard French breakfast, but it did change the mouth feel of the treat. I'd recommend this place to anyone wanting to try something earthier and beautifully executed.

I had mine with whipped cream, hot fudge and chocolate ice cream. I got it to go and the people checking out next to me commented on how good it looked. Which is funny considering it was sitting in a styroform cup. It was the greatest thing I've ever eaten. The chocolate ice cream was rich and delicious. The bottom of the cup was coated in hot fudge then dumped over the top of the ice cream. And I could've eaten an entire bowl of that homemade whipped cream. It was very light and airy. A must stop when you get a serious ice cream hankering mid winter.

It's also fun to wander around eyeing all the candies and chocolates... excellent gift ideas. On this visit, my daughter and I split a large Arctic swirl with brownies pieces and swapped the vanilla custard for eggnog. Best decision I've made all season, no regrets! The only tiny downside: the signs. So. Many. Signs. Rules everywhere--no ice cream in the chocolate area, carry a basket so nothing melts or breaks, no glass outside, clean your trays, etc. I get it (I, too, am a bit of a control freak), but it does start to feel like ice cream comes with a user manual. That said, clearly they've been burned before... or maybe I just recognize my own people. Either way, worth it for the custard alone. And make sure you plan to go right home. This way, you can buy some of their hard ice cream to keep in your freezer.
