    2021 L'Ensemble Pinot Noir
    Michael N.

We were doing some wine tasting in Oregon and went to the Nicolas Jay Estate the third day of our trip. We were greeted by Becca our host and she was amazing. Very knowledgeable and even roasted some nuts to go with our cheese plate and wine. The interior was very well designed with memorabilia on the walls that gave a cool edge to the vibe of the tasting room. We tasted 4 wonderful wines, "Own-Rooted" 2021Pinot Noir which is an un-grafted vine, L'Ensemble 2021Pinot Noir a 2015 Pinot Noir and-lastly "Spirit Hill" a beautiful Chardonnay. It was a great experience to start the last day there.

The wine and experience was superb. The records lining the walls also add to the charm of this vineyard. Excellent.

Great wine, beautiful property, great cheese plate, and knowledgeable pourer! First class and some of the best Pinot in the valley.

There were no tastings available, but given the weather we had just driven through to get there, and bc my friend is a certified somm with the CMS, we decided simply to create our own tasting experience from the single pour options made available. Other reviewers have also mentioned it, but when we sought input from the staff to make our initial wine selections, our experience of service was underwhelming. It was frankly a little disappointing given the status and caliber of the house. Gratefully we met Ben who was solidly helpful; he appreciative of our Quest to create a meaningful tasting experience for ourselves, even if we had not been able to score an appointment with a venue host. He was very knowledgeable and spoke to with us without condescension, intelligently answering our questions about the vineyards, wine making processes, and house history. With his help we also learned about some excellent options for dining in the area. Ben poured our selection of four wines and we chose to take the glasses outside on the patio as the rain had stopped. We helped another couple with photos they were trying to take, and then were able to film a few tasting clips against the picturesque back drop of the vineyards. We ordered a serving of the gougères, which came out warm and were delicious. I picked up a bottle of the Zeraphine Pinot Noir for the friend who had recommended the winery, and Mac picked up three bottles including the estate chardonnay, to return to Canada with. All in all a solid self-guided tasting and learning experience.

It looks like a castle inside, something you'd never expect for being in the countryside in Oregon. It was breathtaking. Michael was our server and was awesome. He poured us a lot of fun side-by-sides, which is such a cool way to taste because it allows you to compare flavors and learn more about personal preference. He spent time and effort making sure we had fun, but also that we learned something. We were there for a long time, so don't book anything after (or close after). I would say skip the food here too. The only downside, which doesn't even merit the loss of a star, is the purchasing wine. We got two bottles, and had to go to another building to grab them. It was odd, we waited in what looked like someone's office. There were about 10 other people waiting in there with no employees or sign that anyone knew we were there. After like 15 min, we knocked on a door, and maybe 5 after that, someone started bringing orders out. Really weird system. I can see it for cases, but it was weird to have to spend 20 min in an auxillary building to grab one bottle.

Seriously - it's hard to justify spending money at other wineries because their wine just falls FLAT. I've been sitting on this review for years now... (my mistake) I guess I just wanted to keep this perfect secret as my own. If you're coming to the willamette valley for GOOD WINE, you need to come here. Also, the staff has been top notch. Michael is our favorite sommelier, Jack is the BEST member relations manager, Ameer is the most entertaining, Shay is the friendliest ever, Dominic and Geovany walk you through the taste palates. I just love this place. Yes, the cost is high end for the area - BUT, if you appreciate a good glass of Pinot noir, this place is your dream.
